  1. My Brilliant Friend: First season@serialfiller2144d

The news of the arrival of the serial transposition of the tetralogy of Elena Ferrante's brilliant friend had immediately made the world tour.

Many people had guessed that this joint operation between RAI and HBO could become a major piece of contemporary seriality.

There would be, on the one hand, the creative freedom and the means of HBO, on the other hand, the wisdom and the regionality (in a positive sense) that RAI and the technical and authorial Italian entourage could ensure.

All this starting from a series of novels that for many people represents one of the cornerstones of the literature of the new millennium.

Perhaps it was precisely in Italy that it was not possible to give the right weight and relevance to this news, making it pass as something not exceptional and not different from other productions.

A few weeks after the airing and the conclusion of the first eight episodes of the series, the most enthusiastic will be able to rejoice, the most skeptical will lock themselves in a dark closet for the rest of their critical days, the most indifferent will recover the series and squint their eyes.

The brilliant friend is a masterpiece.

An abused word, often used to attract readers or spectators but which is the only one capable of encapsulating the range that this series has been able to offer to a worldwide audience.

The story of Lenù and Lila has been told in the most realistic, detailed, emancipated, original and faithful way possible.

Whether you have read the books or not, this series will tear your heart out as well as many smiles.

A novel of formation of the real ones, never shouted and never really narrated with explanations and easy to find.

A fabulous overall cast made up of many little known actors from the theater or the street but who have been able to give each three-dimensionality and truth to their character.

The streets of the district have become our streets.

The broken dreams of young Lila have become our upsets.

The adult life in the features of a monster with gentle manners broke the adolescence of the young Lila and horrified each one of us.

The backwardness of so many carpenter fathers, torturers, shopkeepers or Checchesians have been the mirror of our small or large difficulties in emancipating ourselves.

The narrow and picturesque society of the district reflected our limitations and peculiarities.

The impetus towards the future of the young protagonists has swollen our chests at every close-up on their faces.

The mischief of young Lila has thrilled us.

The tenderness and innocence of the young Lenù made us appreciate the elegance of the naive beauty of a real woman in a child's body.

The customs and habits of an old Naples made us laugh and dream but also cry and disgust.

The dust of the district ended up in our mouths leaving us a bitterness that we will never wash away again.

The sand of the blue sea of Ischia seduced us and abandoned us in that nocturnal violence between friendly walls.

The vintage cars flaunted as a symbol of power made us long for humility.

The fireworks, always higher and higher and crackling on a New Year's Eve night, made us long for silence.

A Neapolitan marriage between timeless songs, food consumed without stopping, chattering smiles and jumping around made us understand what the plebs are like. image.png

The teachings of a teacher by vocation and not by profession made us appreciate the small and big figures of our life.

The slaps of fear and ignorance of mothers and fathers born without education have made us rise up with our heads held high towards our goals.

The dialogues about nothing turned into poetry.

Priceless poems belittled in waste paper.

    Warm colours experienced with coldness.

Cold looks melted in the wind.

    2 girls turned into girls

    2 girls born women

2 brilliant friends supporting each other to make room for themselves in a grammatical life, written and marked by the place and time in which they lived the first groan.

They leave us with an atrocious look, marked by the umpteenth disappointment, an accomplice and bitter but unison and harbinger of new adventures, new paths to travel together until time and death will not separate them.

  2. My Brilliant Friend: a real masterpiece from Italy (ENG - ITA)@serialfiller2260d

    Clamorous
We could stay here for hours celebrating through superlatives of all kinds the second season of The Genius Friend. Better than season one? Maybe not. Or maybe it is. This uncertainty is consolatory because it makes us understand how much for now all 16 episodes have been absolute masterpieces that have moved on the edge of perfection, each with obvious strengths but always different. The story of Lenù and Lila has evolved quickly but without haste. Saverio Costanza took the time to build it.
In 8 episodes we have seen Lila starting from the status of a married, accomplished, rich and respected woman to end up being a single, penniless, runaway, betrayed and marginalized mother. From the jewels promised and bought by Stefano to the stripper. From a luxury car envied by the whole district to public transport. In between there was the illusion of a true love, the tangible veil of freedom brushing against her face, the dream of a train of desires that could start again. Dreams and illusions flew away inexorably and ended up being less than a memory.
For Lenù the journey was reverse and different. For her the point of arrival is a ring and the promise of a marriage but above all the publication of a book that so much of Lila has in its pages. The departure was bland, the engine flooded and the landscape full of clouds and fog. And yet Lenù has managed to draw strength and teaching from the failures of her brilliant friend. Elena Greco has shown, in silence, that she has the strength to self-determine herself, to move away from the ward, to separate herself from Lila's toxicity, to finish her studies, to go to Pisa, to really emancipate herself without ever feeling superior, to fall in love, to protest in the streets of Pisa, to run free, to feel anger and love, to conclude a methodical but perfect path, despite her accent, despite the boulder that places and affections of a life were for her.
The brilliant friend ends with that bitter finding of 2 souls who together have been able to elevate each other in the depths while succeeding or failing mieseramente in their attempt to be different women. They are 2 women with the opposite destiny but united by a common feeling, by a common fire. The brilliant friend is the story, the novel of formation of both of them that passes from the evolution of Lenù and the involution of Lila. A Heisenberg's principle applied to 2 human variables, as if to the increase of the successes of one corresponds an increase of the failures of the other so that everything remains constant. Constant as the excellent quality of each frame of this TV series destined to make the history of television, Italian and not only.

    Bello!
    Straordinario
    Magnifico
    Immortale
    Clamoroso
Forse no. O forse si.

  4. My Brilliant Friend: episode 3&4@serialfiller2321d

    Tunnel Wave.png

It has to be said right away. The genius friend is a masterpiece. We can stay here and talk about how the TV series could improve, about this and that detail but nothing will change the fact that on the whole the TV series taken from Elena Ferrante's books is now a rare, very rare pearl. Episodes 3 and 4 of the new season are just the confirmation. Another 2 pieces of inestimable value that are embedded in a mosaic that, like Lila's photography, is anything but linear but that in its chaos, in its disorder is able to delineate very well the time, the narrated era and the figures that move in that era. The brilliant friend manages not only to be a fine novel of formation but also the fresco of an entire era, an entire nation, an entire generation. Through Lila and Lenù are painted the real dynamics of a patriarchal system where woman was an instrument, something that man possessed for his personal, professional and existential affirmation. Through the 2 girls we live the story of a world far from ours today but at the same time close in the reincarnation of stereotypes and incredible doubts that today as then we all live on our skin. From the difficulty in understanding regional, national and global phenomena, to the fear of tomorrow, to populism as opposed to intelligence, from those who believe that paying taxes is a duty and those who never knew how to speak about taxes. At every moment of each episode we can glimpse a message for us, whether personal or political, social or nihilistic. Lenù's love for Nino contrasted with bitter disappointment in discovering who he really is deep down. The wonderful friendship between the two girls contrasted with Lila's wickedness in looking her friend in the face and destroying all her dreams of emancipation. Continuous contrasts that never pretend to balance the story or life itself, but on the contrary to lay it bare in all its difficulties and contradictions. The brilliant friend is for this and many other reasons one of the great masterpieces of the contemporary world.

Bisogna dirlo subito.
