One Hundred Years of Solitude is a novel written by Gabriel García Márquez, Colombian winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1982. This novel is very famous and well known in the Spanish-speaking world as an educational reference in both diversified and university education; however, I have not yet had the disposition to read it, because I am motivated by another type of literature, I always said that once a hundred years of solitude came to the cinema I would not miss the opportunity to see it on the screen.
Some time ago I heard that Gabriel García Márquez received many proposals to take his work to the cinema and he rejected it countless times, but after his death his relatives, his widow and his descendant decided to sell the rights to Netflix creating a series of two seasons each with eight chapters and although you have only released the first season leaving the intrigue for a second there is no certainty that they will produce it.
I was totally unaware of the context of the novel or the story of this series, but I do know many people who have read the novel and like the story leaving them satisfied, and one of the people who read the novel and watched the series was dissatisfied with the visual production and it seems she is not the only one, as it has a very low review score of 5/10, which makes it seem that it has not been as well received by moviegoers or their expectations have been too high.
Regularly, successful books fail on screen, although there are their exceptions. I'll have to read One Hundred Years of Solitude to have a comparison, but for now I'll just give my review as a non-documentary based moviegoer.

Cien años de soledad es una novela escrita por Gabriel García Márquez, Colombiano ganador del Premio Nobel de Literatura en 1982. Esta novela es muy famosa y conocida en el habla hispana tomada como referencia educativa tanto en la educación diversificada como universitaria; sin embargo, yo todavía no he tenido la disposición de leerla, pues me motiva otro tipo de literatura, siempre decía que una vez que llegara al cine cien años de soledad no perdería la oportunidad de verla en la pantalla.
Hace tiempo atrás escuché que Gabriel García Márquez recibió muchas propuestas para llevar su obra el cine y él la rechazó innumerables veces, pero después de su muerte sus familiares, su viuda y su descendiente decidieron vender los derechos a Netflix creando una serie de dos temporadas cada una con ocho capítulos y aunque solamente hayas salido la primera temporada dejando la intriga para una segunda no existe la seguridad de que la vayan a producir.
Yo desconocía totalmente el contexto de la novela o la historia de esta serie, pero sí conozco a muchas personas que han leído la novela y les gusta la historia dejándolos satisfechos, y una de las personas que leyó la novela y vio la serie quedó insatisfecha con la producción visual y parece no ser la única, ya que tiene una puntuación muy baja en las críticas de 5/10, lo que hace parecer que no ha sido tan bien acogida por los cinéfilos o sus expectativas han sido muy altas.
Regularmente, los libros exitosos fracasan en la pantalla, aunque existen sus excepciones. Tendré que leer Cien Años de Soledad para tener una comparación, pero por el momento solo daré mi reseña como una cinéfila sin base documental.
One Hundred Years of Solitude begins with the story of a couple and their community, living in the countryside where there was no electricity and their houses were made of bahareque, this couple had blood ties because they were cousins, a union that was not well seen by the mother of the young woman named Úrsula the protagonist or one of the main characters. Ursula let her mother suggest that she would have children with malformations, because she fell in love and married her cousin, and this belief made her avoid consummating her marriage for almost a year. During this time we can see the struggle and resistance between the spouses.
José Arcadio Buendía is the protagonist and husband of Úrsula, name and surname that is repeated for several generations, I imagined that each character in the book has to be well developed to avoid confusion, but as far as the series is concerned the protagonist is the most prominent of the Buendía. Jose Arcadio was dedicated to the sport of cockfighting, and I say it is a sport because the roosters are prepared with good food and special care to make it a winner, the owners of these animals strive to have the best fighting rooster and it is or was in the past a recreational and commercial activity where bets generated a lot of money, and also fights and deaths that were a common denominator.
In one of the cock fights, José Arcadio's opponent lost and offended his honor, which caused them to face each other in a duel to the death and José Arcadio, with a spear that he stuck in his neck, killed him. This scene was one of the best of the whole series and is in the first chapter, because you can feel all the anger that moved that confrontation in addition to the visual elements, such as smoke, dust, fire, and other subjective elements expressed by the characters as the cruelty, strength and character of the people in the field.
José Arcadio was acquitted of murder before the law, because it was a fight for his honor; however, he could never recover from the remorse of conscience for taking the life of a man and the soul or what represents a ghost of that man haunts him forever, appearing in different periods of his life and to escape from that death they leave the town in search of a better future and friends and family follow him. They get lost for years looking for the sea, pass mountains, hills and swamps until Macondo is born, an imaginary town, which later Jose Arcadio and Ursula decide to make real by creating mud houses with the whole group that followed them. Until this moment, Jose Arcadio is a leader and Ursula his support, but she is pregnant and that is why settling in a place is necessary. As the dead man did not leave José Arcadio and Úrsula alone because they both saw them, it seems that they will be happy in Macondo and the construction of their new life begins, people organize themselves, and little by little the exchange of resources for services covering their needs arises.

Cien años de soledad comienza con la historia de una pareja y su comunidad, que viven en el campo donde no había electricidad y sus casas eran de bahareque, esta pareja tenían lazos sanguíneos porque eran primos, unión que no era bien vista por la madre de la joven que se llama Úrsula la protagonista o uno de los personajes principales. Úrsula se dejó sugestionar por su mamá y creía que tendría hijos con malformaciones, por enamorarse y casarse con su primo, y esta creencia hizo que evitara consumar su matrimonio por casi un año. Durante este tiempo podemos ver la lucha y resistencia que existen entre los esposos.
José Arcadio Buendía es el protagonista y esposo de Úrsula, nombre y apellido que se repite por varias generaciones, me imaginó que cada personaje en el libro tiene que estar bien desarrollado para evitar confusiones, pero en lo que respecta a la serie el protagonista es el más destacado de los Buendía. José Arcadio se dedicaba al deporte de las peleas de gallo, y digo que es un deporte porque los gallos son preparados con una buena alimentación y cuidados especiales para convertirlo en un ganador, los dueños de estos animales se esfuerzan para tener el mejor gallo de pelea y es o era en el pasado una actividad recreativa y comercial donde las apuestas generaban mucho dinero, y también peleas y muertes que eran un común denominador.
En una de las peleas de gallo, el contrincante de José Arcadio perdió y le ofendió su honor, lo que hizo que se enfrentaran en un duelo a muerte y José Arcadio, con una lanza que clavó en su cuello, lo asesinó. Esta escena fue una de las mejores de toda la serie y está en el primer capítulo, porque se puede sentir toda la ira que movió ese enfrentamiento además de los elementos visuales, como el humo, el polvo, el fuego, y otros elementos subjetivos expresados por los personajes como la crueldad, la fuerza y el carácter de las personas del campo.
José Arcadio quedó absuelto de homicidio ante la ley, porque fue una pelea por su honor; sin embargo, nunca pudo recuperarse del remordimiento de conciencia por quitarle la vida a un hombre y el alma o lo que representa un fantasma de aquel hombre lo persigue para siempre, apareciendo en diversos periodos de su vida y por huir de esa muerte se van del pueblo en busca de un futuro mejor y lo siguen amigos y familiares. Se pierden por años buscando el mar, pasan montañas, sierras y pantanos hasta que nace Macondo, un pueblo imaginario, que luego Jose Arcadio y Úrsula deciden hacer realidad creando con todo el grupo que los siguió casas de barro. Hasta este momento, José Arcadio es un líder y Úrsula su apoyo, pero ella está embarazada y por eso establecerse en un lugar es necesario. Como el muerto no dejó en paz a José Arcadio y a la misma Úrsula porque ambos los veían, parece que serán felices en Macondo y comienza la construcción de su nueva vida, las personas se organizan, y poco a poco surgen el intercambio de recursos por servicios cubriendo sus necesidades.

During the passing of time I enjoyed as a viewer the transformation of the town, the whole environment where the series was developed, sometimes I wondered if they generated that town for the production or if it already existed, this same question is asked by people who read the novel, it seems to be a real place that inspired its creator, as a curious fact this novel has been translated into 19 languages so I think that its visual production can not be so bad.
There is a saying that goes small town small hell big, but hell broke loose within the Buendia family, when the children grew up and began to fall in love, shielding and evading their responsibilities, also as a peasant family is accustomed to give roof to distant relatives and thus arose blood brothers and adoption. As the years passed, the brothers had children with the same woman, a nephew was attracted to his aunt who was not only his aunt but the maternal figure who raised him and so the passions were dismembering the family from its foundations, and the most curious thing is that in each generation the names are repeated in honor of an uncle, father or grandfather.
The first season of One Hundred Years of Solitude shows how time passes and life is lost among unfulfilled dreams, unrequited love, unhealthy feelings, envy among family members, and evil desires, but also love and suffering. The civil war is also part of this story and it shows how the Buendía family continues to lead through their descendants.
There is a lot of fantasy and magic that is palpable when the people are victims of a plague or a kind of virus that erases their memory, this virus took away their sleep and turned them into a kind of zombies, being deprived of rest the memory begins to fade and the most astute begin to write down the names of things everywhere. This part reflects the genre of the original novel inspired by magical realism, where the unreal or strange can be something common and that in some way can exist. If we see from the real point of view that insomnia affects the memory and that it could be a momentary solution to write down the names of things, it does not escape being a personal and public health problem, and I think it is a main trigger of madness.
Madness from which the patriarch José Arcadio Buendía suffers, and which I suspected was going to end up like this, because obsessions are not good and if the natural form of sleep is lost, it is a bad combination. José Arcadio spent years immersed in his office that ended up being his laboratory until he lost control and in an explosion of anger became violent and his family had to tie him to a tree, there he was groomed, fed and was also the center of the house because the acacia tree was in the central garden, From there he listened and watched his children and grandchildren grow until the end of his days, this seen today may seem inhumane, but I do not doubt that in the past some families did it and even today instead of being tied to a tree they do it in a bed, more in the past when there was no medicine to help in these cases or knowledge. To see this broke my soul, I can't imagine having a family member in those conditions, but I don't judge whoever had to do it. It hurt me very much to see the suffering of this character and also that of his wife, who had to deal with José Arcadio's illness and continue working for her family.
These are some of the thoughts and memories that the first season of One Hundred Years of Solitude left me with. It has been several weeks since I watched it, there are many things that I did not tell or specify about some important characters. Each one is well developed and if I wrote about them I would make another novel of One Hundred Years of Solitude. I liked it 90% because I have no point of comparison. I have not read the novel, but I must tell you that I recommend it, especially if you have not read the novel as general culture.

Mientras todo esto pasaba, las familias crecían, y Jose Arcadio comenzó a tener obsesiones primero en descubrir oro enterrado, luego en volverse un alquimista y crearlo él mismo, su ambición lo llevó a obtener conocimientos en las ciencias y a perderse en su misma obsesión olvidándose de la familia que tenía, por eso le tocó a Úrsula salir adelante con sus hijos y trabajar para mantenerlos, ahora era ella la cabeza de familia, madre y emprendedora, creó dulces en paletas y esta idea le dio la estabilidad económica y reconocimiento en el pueblo de Macondo.
Durante el pasar del tiempo disfruté como espectadora la transformación del pueblo, todo el ambiente donde se desarrolló la serie, a veces me preguntaba si generaron ese pueblo para la producción o si ya existía, esta misma pregunta se la hacen las personas que leyeron la novela, parece ser un lugar real que inspiró a su creador, como dato curioso esta novela ha sido traducida en 19 idiomas por lo que creo que su producción visual no puede ser tan mala.
Hay un refrán que reza pueblo chiquito infierno grande, pero el infierno se desató dentro de la familia Buendía, cuando los niños crecieron y comenzaron a enamorarse, escudándose y evadiendo sus responsabilidades, también como familia campesina se acostumbra a dar techo a familiares lejanos y así surgieron hermanos de sangre y de adopción. Al pasar los años, los hermanos tuvieron hijos con una misma mujer, un sobrino se sintió atraído por su tía que no solo fue su tía sino la figura materna quien lo crio y así las pasiones fueron desmembrando a la familia de sus cimientos, y lo más curioso es que en cada generación se repiten los nombres por honor a un tío, padre o abuelo.
Cien años de soledad en su primera temporada muestran cómo el tiempo pasa y la vida se pierde entre sueños no alcanzados, amores no correspondidos, sentimientos malsanos, envidias entre familiares, y malos deseos, pero también amor y sufrimiento. La guerra civil también hace parte de esta historia y se muestran cómo los Buendía siguen liderando a través de sus descendientes.
Hay mucha fantasía y magia que es palpable cuando el pueblo es víctima de una peste o una especie de virus que les borra la memoria, este virus les quito el sueño y los volvió una especie de zombis, al verse privados del descanso la memoria comienza a desvanecerse y los más astutos comienzan a anotar los nombres de las cosas en todas partes. Este parte refleja el género de la novela original inspirada en el realismo mágico, donde lo irreal o extraño puede ser algo común y que en cierta forma puede existir. Si vemos desde el punto real que el insomnio afecta la memoria y que pudiera ser una solución momentánea a anotar los nombres de las cosas, no escapa ser un problema de salud personal y pública, y creo que es un detonante principal de la locura.
Locura de la que padece el patriarca José Arcadio Buendía, y que yo sospechaba iba a terminar así, pues las obsesiones no son buenas y si se pierde la forma natural del sueño, es una mala combinación. José Arcadio pasó años inmerso en su oficina que terminó siendo su laboratorio hasta que perdió el control y en una explosión de ira se volvió violento teniendo su familia que amarrarlo de un árbol, allí sentado era aseado, alimentado y también era el centro de la casa porque el árbol de acacia estaba en el jardín central, desde allí escucho y vio crecer a sus hijos, nietos hasta el final de sus días, esto visto en la actualidad puede parecer inhumano, pero no dudo que en el pasado algunas familias lo hicieran e incluso en la actualidad que en vez de estar atado a un árbol lo hagan en una cama, más en el pasado cuando no había medicina para ayudar en estos casos ni conocimientos. A ver esto me partió el alma, no me imagino tener un familiar en esas condiciones, pero tampoco juzgo a quien haya tenido que hacerlo. Me dolió mucho ver el sufrimiento de este personaje y también el de su esposa, que tuvo que lidiar con la enfermedad de José Arcadio y seguir adelante trabajando para su familia.
Estas son algunas de las ideas y recuerdos que me dejó la primera temporada de Cien Años de Soledad. Ya pasaron varias semanas desde que la vi, hay muchas cosas que no conté ni tampoco especifique sobre algunos personajes importantes. Cada uno está bien desarrollado y si escribiera sobre ellos haría otra novela de cien años de soledad. A mí me gustó un 90 % porque no tengo punto de comparación. No he leído la novela, pero debo decirles que se las recomiendo, sobre todo si no han leído la novela como cultura general.
