The Sheridan Universe
El Universo Sheridan.
While I wait for the last season of Yellowstone to finish filming and premiere, I'm taking the opportunity to catch up with the Sheridan universe. Special Ops: Lioness is another series I have yet to see. This time the successful Sheridan brings us a story of espionage, terrorism, conspiracies and military action.
Sheridan works hard for a living, I can't imagine how his mind manages to keep up with so many simultaneous productions. Besides, he must be having headaches because of Kevin Costner, who I read a few weeks ago in a report that they had not reached an agreement for the end of Yellowstone.
Special Ops: Lioness I didn't see it at the time and it wasn't until a couple of days ago that I was able to watch its eight episodes. It is striking that it is the only Sheridan series where the main weight falls on the female characters.
Mientras espero a que termine de rodarse y estrenarse la última temporada de Yellowstone, aprovecho para ponerme al día con el universo Sheridan. Special Ops: Lioness es otra serie que tenía pendiente de ver. Esta vez el exitoso Sheridan nos trae una historia de espionaje, terrorismo, conspiraciones y acción militar.
Sheridan se gana el pan trabajando duro, no me quiero imaginar cómo se las arregla su mente para tener tantas producciones simultáneas. Además, debe tener dolores de cabeza por culpa de Kevin Costner, del que leí hace unas semanas una noticia en la que no habían llegado a un acuerdo para el final de Yellowstone.
Special Ops: Lioness no la vi en su momento y no ha sido hasta hace un par de días que he podido ver sus ocho episodios. Llama la atención que es la única serie de Sheridan donde el peso principal recae en los personajes femeninos.
Lioness is a series that handles all the clichés of spies, secret military operations and the fight against terrorism. There is nothing new, like other series by the same creator, but as an entertainment product I think it delivers. There is no doubt that Sheridan knows how to keep the viewer gripped with stories that have been seen many times before.
Joe is a woman who leads the Lioness team, in charge of operations against terrorist enemies. Specialising in infiltrating agents to neutralise targets, these agents are on a suicide mission, for if they are discovered, they will die a horrible death at the hands of Islamic terrorists. This is the backdrop for Cruz Manuelos, a woman who, after being abused, joins the army and becomes a marine. She is selected by Joe for a dangerous mission.
Joe's superior in the CIA is Kaitlyn, another woman. This is the novelty of Shridan, that the protagonists of this story are women. Something that many have complained about is that his series is too masculine, perhaps this is his response to these criticisms. I don't care about the gender of the protagonists, just that they are consistent with the narrative.
Lioness es una serie que maneja todos los tópicos de espías, operaciones militares secretas y lucha contra el terrorismo. No hay nada nuevo, como otras series del mismo creador, pero como producto de entretenimiento creo que cumple. No hay duda de que Sheridan sabe cómo mantener al espectador atrapado con historias que ya se han visto muchas veces.
Joe es una mujer que lidera el equipo Lioness, encargado de las operaciones contra enemigos terroristas. Especializada en infiltrar agentes para neutralizar objetivos, estos agentes realizan una misión suicida, ya que si son descubiertos, tendrán una muerte horrible a manos de terroristas islámicos. En este contexto aparece Cruz Manuelos, una mujer que, tras ser víctima de malos tratos, ingresa en el ejército y se convierte en marine. Es seleccionada por Joe para una peligrosa misión.
La superior de Joe en la CIA es Kaitlyn, otra mujer. Esta es la novedad de Shridan, que las protagonistas de esta historia son mujeres. Algo de lo que muchos se han quejado es que sus series son demasiado masculina, quizás esta sea su respuesta a estas críticas. No me importa el género de los protagonistas, sólo que sean coherentes con la narración.
The work of Zoe Saldana as Joe and Laysla de Olivera as Cruz stands out. The former is already well known, not only for her participation in Guardians of the Galaxy and the Avatar saga, she has an extensive career in film and television and has worked in many important productions of different genres.
Laysla de Olivera on the other hand is little known, I remember her fleetingly from a film that was an adaptation of Stephen King, but I hadn't seen any of her other work. A good discovery. She convinced me as a Marine determined to change her life and prove to herself how strong she is. What she didn't count on was that this powerful force of love would be an obstacle to her goal.
Nicole Kidman plays Kaitlyn, although she is a great star and fulfils her role as a character, I found it shocking to see her face, she has had so many injections to tighten her skin that her face looks like that of a plastic doll, especially the mouth and it takes away from her expressiveness. She was a very beautiful actress and putting so many substances in her face hurts them, but that's Hollywood.
There are several supporting actors I recognise from other series, but Morgan Freeman stands out in a small role. The story has a closed ending, that's good, but they have still confirmed a second season with the same cast. I hope it will be just as entertaining.

Destaca el trabajo de Zoe Saldana como Joe y Laysla de Olivera como Cruz. La primera ya es muy conocida, no sólo por su participación en Guardianes de la Galaxia y la saga Avatar, tiene una extensa carrera en cine y televisión y ha trabajado en muchas producciones importantes de diferentes géneros.
Laysla de Olivera en cambio es poco conocida, la recuerdo fugazmente de una película que era una adaptación de Stephen King, pero no había visto otros de sus trabajos. Un buen descubrimiento. Me convenció como una marine decidida a cambiar su vida y demostrarse a sí misma lo fuerte que es. Con lo que no contaba es que esa poderosa fuerza del amor sería un obstáculo para su objetivo.
Nicole Kidman interpreta a Kaitlyn, aunque es una gran estrella y cumple con su papel como personaje, me resultó chocante verle la cara, se ha puesto tantas inyecciones para tensar la piel que su rostro parece el de una muñeca de plástico, sobre todo la boca y le resta expresividad. Era una actriz muy guapa y ponerle tantas sustancias en la cara les hace daño, pero así es Hollywood.
Hay varios actores secundarios que reconozco de otras series, pero destaca Morgan Freeman en un pequeño papel. La historia tiene un final cerrado, eso está bien, pero aún así han confirmado una segunda temporada con el mismo reparto. Espero que sea igual de entretenida.
