  1. Review Film: PADDINGTON 2 (2017)@film-trail3014d

It's Hard encounters live-action / animated sorts of Paddington 2 in Hollywood production. A funny family spectacle without the exploitation of slapstick humor, touching behind a simple, light but tall-based aesthetic story. Like its predecessor, the film puts forward the adventures of the titular character (voiced by Ben Whishaw), the bear with a red hat and blue coat, now living a harmonious life with the Brown family at Windsor Gardens, London. The adventures of Paddington are so pure, for it is not a matter of seeking treasure or defeating criminals, but of giving the best gift to their beloved family, There is still an antagonist, Phoenix Buchanan (Hugh Grant) a former top actor whose career is dimming. The threat that he presents to the protagonist is also driven ambition to collect hidden treasures in various corners of London. But the playwright duo Paul King (also directed) and Simon Farnaby, can emphasize that Paddington's motivation is to give pop-ups to his aunt Lucy (voiced Imelda Staunton), as his 100th birthday present. No more and no less. While the process of chasing a total criminal is charged to the Brown family.

The book containing the various landmarks of London was so meaningful because Paddington hoped to show the whole town to Lucy, who had always failed to make the dream of setting foot in London. The point is enough to be the foundation, as well as the core of emotional embroidery groove. As an assertion of that role, King prepares imaginative sequences when the world of books is manifested into reality, with the audience going to be in Lucy's position, mesmerized by the visuals, touched his heart when he invited Paddington around the cartons version of London, Visual is an element really maximized by King and team. The setting, whether indoor or outdoor, is wrapped in soft colors while occasionally switching to the classic impression sparkle in the memorabilia shop. The fashion is not left to entertain the eyes, especially the pink prisoner uniforms that like to state how the world where Paddington lived is a place where it is always good. Plus some unique and quirky styling styles (prison break scenes to be the best example), it would not be an exaggeration to think that Paddington 2 involved Wes Anderson's intervention.

Related to comedy, Paddington 2 is reluctant to get caught up in the familiar pattern of live-action / animation dish (read: like many made in Hollywood). Although slapstick still accompanies, but used sufficiently, not to too often throw his character to and fro. The rest is a picture of an anomaly situation, like a dance full of the joys of effective prisoners producing laughter, or at least giving the audience a bliss. Not a row of comedies that will stay long in the memory, but simply facilitate a fun-watching experience, In the ranks of players, Hugh Grant created villains that fit the feel of the movie. Evil, but the role also raises the cuteness, let alone about the character who flicked the actor as a "dangerous profession" because of the duty "serve lies". Brendan Gleeson as Knuckles, a prisoner as well as a dreaded chef of other prisoners, is able to master the screen at every appearance. While the sound of Ben Whishaw keeps Paddington always a center that is easy to be liked, while also supported the stupid behavior plus the adorable looks. As a family spectacle, Paddington 2 is definitely a complete package.

  2. Paddington 2 Movie Review--Movies released in January are supposed to bad. Paddington 2 did not get that memo.@mctiller3061d

Most movies released in January are supposed to be terrible.

Studios release the movies they don’t expect much from during this time.  Which is why is boggles my mind that Paddington 2 was released in January.  This is a thoroughly enjoyable movie.

We introduced to Paddington to when he is adopt by his aunt and uncle in a harrowing opening scene.  Then we are shifted back to where Paddington is living with his human family the Browns.  This is a great aspect of this universe Paddington lives in, he is a bear that talks, yet, it’s no big deal.  Hey, talking bear, not an issue.  I love that.

Paddington is early awaiting the birthday of his aunt, who is really his adoptive mom, and wants very much to give her a great birthday present in honor of everything that she has done for him.  The movie is based on this focus on thankfulness.

Paddington is one day visiting his friend Samual Gruber who owns an antique shop.  He discoers a pop-up book of London, and he realizes that his aunt would love it.  She has always wanted to come to London but has never been able to make it.  Unfortunately the Pop-up is a one-of-a-kind creation that is very valuable.  So Paddington decides to get a job.

The story is very comical as Paddington moves from job to job, until he discovers that he is really good at cleaning windows.  Children will love Paddington attempt as a barber.

One day, the Browns and Paddington go to the opening of year Steam festival, a festival of old-timey rides that are steam-powered.  Where the master of ceremonies is a past his prime actor Phoenix Buchanan, played to perfection by Hugh Grant.  Buchanan sees Paddington and calls on him to help him open the festival.

This is one of the details that I love, Paddington is called upon, “The bear!” and no one makes a peep.  Paddington fits right in.  Just wonderful.

During their interaction Buchanan questions Paddington about what he is working for, and he shares about the pop-up book.  Buchanan in need of money, hatches a plan to get the pop-up book.  And from here we are off and running.

Buchanan steals the book, and Paddington is incorrectly identified as the thief and sent to prison.  Where he meets Nuckles, a grumpy mean cook played by Brendon Gleason.  When Nuckles, spelled with a capital N, threatens Paddington for criticizing his prison food, I was surprised at the level of humor for a kids movie.  Look for the guard, who asks for a medic first, and then a priest second.

As Paddington is put into prison, his natural tendency for being polite and positive earns him friends and special protection from Nuckles.  Paddington is a ray of sunshine in a dark place.

The movie moves as the Brown try to proves Paddington’s innocence, and Paddington’s life in prison.

The movie works because it has jokes for adults, and silliness for kids.  The movie is touching, warm, and not over the top.

Paddington is voiced by Ben Whisaw, who is famous for playing Q in the Daniel Craig Bond films.  Paddington’s kindness and tenderness are portrayed experting though Whisaw’s voice.

Brendon Gleason brings the hard on the outside, but teddy bear on the inside, Nuckles to life.

Hugh Bonneville, plays Henry Brown, Paddington’s human dad, who feels stuck and frustrated in a mid-life crisis.

Hugh Grant plays Phoenix Buchanan to perfection.

    It’s All in the Details

This movie was described by the director as a labor of love.  And it shows, in all the details.  For example, as Paddington describes how his aunt would love the pop-up book of London, London is immediately transformed into a pop-up book and Paddington takes his aunt through the magical detail filled pop-up book.

When Paddington is in the kitchen with Nuckles, look at the newspaper headlines that Brendon Gleason is reading.  They are joyful, well written puns.  If you see this on Blu-Ray or digital pause it and see what I am referring to.

It is these details that bring extra life and fun to the movie.  And that extreme attention to details shows through out the movie.

Paddington 2 recently broke Toy Story 2’s Rotten Tomatoes record of 163 straight Fresh reviews.  Paddington 2 deserves it.  Currently as of this writing it has 184 Fresh reviews.

    Final Thoughts

If you enjoyed the original Paddington books—see this movie.

If you have kids who like movies—see this movie.

If you enjoy well made movie—see this movie.

Paddington 2 is full of joy and happiness and everything a trip to movies should be.

  3. Paddington 2 - Movie Review@coldsteem3089d

    image.png

Today's free movie, courtesy of Moviepass, is Paddington 2. I enjoyed the first feature length Paddington movie, which premiered in 2014. It was a solid movie, but had room for improvement. I am always concerned about sequels, which often only capitalize off the success of a previous film. In this case, the sequel found that room for improvement from the first film and delivered. The sequel is a better film all the way around.

    image.png

Paddington 2 picks up with some additional backstory. In the first film, we learn a bit about how Paddington ended up traveling halfway around the world to land in London. The sequels starts a bit earlier, showing us how Paddington (Ben Whishaw) came into the care of "Aunt Lucy" (Imelda Staunton) to begin with. Aunt Lucy, its seems, is about to celebrate her 100th birthday. Paddington wants to send her a gift that will make up for her never having been able to visit London. He finds that gift in Mr. Gruber's (Jim Broadbent) antique store. A pop-up book of London that has pop ups of a dozen famous London landmarks.

Paddington takes up some odd jobs to pay for the book. When the book is stolen from the shop, Paddington is framed for the theft. His family, Mary (Sally Hawkins), Henry (Hugh Bonneville), Judy (Madeleine Harris) and Jonathan (Samuel Joslin) set out to clear his name by piecing together clues. Meanwhile, Paddington is sent to the big house, where he teams up with a ragtag group of convicts that includes the time-hardened Nuckels (Brendan Gleeson). Will Paddington serve his ten-year sentence? Will his aunt get her 100th birthday gift? And why is the pop up book so important? To answer these questions, you have to watch the film!

    image.png

Director Paul King is back at director for the sequel. He co-wrote the screenplay with Simon Farnaby, who also worked on the first film. The plot in the sequel had substance. It was an interesting tale (tail?) augmented by an amazing use of media. The film utilizes fantasy sequences that incorporates several different types of media. The effect is seamless, creating an exceptional, engaging illusion. The characters are interesting, although many are there as role-players. The film is predictable in many ways, as well. But the great pacing, intriguing action sequences and zany antics gave this film enough umph to exceed it's predecessor.

    image.png

Paddington 2 starts out with an award winning cast. What might ordinarily be average characters becomes enhanced when you cast guys like Jim Broadbent in the minor role of Mr. Gruber. Or Hugh Grant as Phoenix Buchanan. Or Brendan Gleeson as Nuckels. Throw in Sally Hawkins and you have a handful of Oscars and Oscar nominations. The film is bursting with talent. The roles were well cast, intentionally leaning toward comical characters to support this fun trip. It is two hours of getting carried away with good old fashioned fun. The people actors did an exceptional job of interacting with the animation, as well.

    image.png

The MPAA gave Paddington 2 a kid-friendly PG rating. The film runs 1 hour and 43 minutes, which seemed just about right. I was never bored. The pacing was steady, with nice action sequences scattered throughout. The film has the typical kid-oriented laugh lines and visual humor. Things like a bear washing a window with his behind. Overall, about as tame as you are going to find at the theater. More tame than the average evening television program. Good fun for the entire family.

    image.png

Paddington 2 gets a recommendation. The question is: "Should I see it at the theater?" Why not? If you are planning to visit the theater anyway, this is one of the best films on screen right now. It is an excellent film. If you have kids, they are bound to be delighted by this film. My wife and I, long removed from childhood, although young-at-heart, loved this movie. While a bit predictable and a few flat characters, the film is crazy fun. It has an interesting plot, great pacing, awesome animation, great use of multi-media styles and a lovable cast. Definitely recommended. 8/10.
