Hola, querido hiver.
Pedro Almodóvar es uno de los directores de cine españoles más conocidos fuera de nuestro país y, también, uno de los más controvertidos. O le odias o le amas. De lo que no hay duda es de que no te deja indiferente. Sus películas suelen girar en torno a aspectos de su propia biografía, al menos así es como se venden, acompañados de una estética peculiar y original. La exploración de la propia sexualidad y las relaciones materno-filiales sobrevuelan en la mayoría de ellas.
Dolor y gloria se presenta como la historia de un director de cine que está en el declive de su carrera y que padece graves dolores físicos. Los problemas de salud de Salvador Mallo (Antonio Banderas) provocan inevitablemente que repase su vida y trate de cerrar algunas de las heridas que todavía mantiene abiertas.
Alternando el pasado y el presente conoceremos su infancia, cuando sus padres se mudaron en los años 60 al pueblo valenciano de Paterna en busca de una mejor vida y cómo allí experimentó su primer deseo. Le acompañaremos en su doloroso amor vivido en Madrid en los años 80 y seremos testigos de su refugio en el cine y la escritura como remedio para tratar de olvidar el dolor.
Lo que más le duele a Salvador es no poder volver a hacer su arte, sin él se siente vacío y la única forma de llenarlo es volviendo a escribir. Algo a lo que le ayudan algunos reencuentros.
Siendo sincera, lo que me atrajo para ver la película fue el reparto principal. Antonio Banderas es uno de mis actores preferidos, y cuantos más años pasan más me gusta. Hace mucho que abandonó ese aura de galán pícaro con pinta de inocente para demostrar que es capaz de interpretar lo que le pongan por delante. Además, como persona ha sabido hacerse respetar por los medios de comunicación, algo nada fácil en esta tierra donde nos encanta un cotilleo.
Por su parte, Asier Etxeandía está perfecto como Alberto Crespo, el actor obsesionado con Salvador. El monólogo que se marca es una obra de arte. Este es otro actor que me encanta, en especial su forma de hablar y su voz. Como curiosidad, dejó una exitosa serie para participar en este rodaje.
En la vertiente femenina encontramos a dos actrices interpretando a Jacinta, la madre de Salvador, en la infancia y en el presente. Penélope Cruz hace un papel ya conocido en su registro. No sé por qué, pero esta actriz no es capaz de transmitirme bien los personajes, me parece que siempre hace lo mismo.
En cambio Julieta Serrano es una reina de los papeles secundarios a los que hace brillar con luz propia. De hecho su trabajo en esta película le valió el Premio Goya a la mejor actriz de reparto.
Hablando de Premios Goya, esta cinta fue la triunfadora de la edición de 2020, cosechando los más importantes: mejor película, dirección, actor, guion original, actriz de reparto, montaje y música original.
No se conformó con eso, pues se paseó por todos los premios cinematográficos a nivel mundial. Estuvo nominada como mejor película internacional o de habla no inglesa en los premios Óscar, Globos de Oro, BAFTA, César, Premios Cine Europeo y Premios Ariel, ganando en estos últimos a la Mejor Película Iberoamericana.
Añadido a lo anterior, la interpretación de Antonio Banderas fue premiada en el Festival de Cinema de Cannes y nominada en los Óscar y en los Globos de Oro como mejor actor.
Estamos ante una película con tintes autobiográficos sin llegar a ser un biopic, pero que nos permite conocer el trasfondo de Almodóvar y nos abre la puerta para comprender mejor sus obras.
En algunas críticas que he consultado al preparar esta reseña hablan de lentitud o de aburrimiento aunque en mi caso no experimenté nada de eso, pues esta película se trata de leer miradas y entender gestos, sumergiéndote en unos diálogos maravillosos que rezuman amor por el arte y su creación.

Pedro Almodóvar is one of the best-known Spanish film directors outside Spain, and also one of the most controversial. You either hate him or love him. What there is no doubt about is that he never leaves you indifferent. His films usually revolve around aspects of his own biography, at least that's how they are sold, accompanied by a peculiar and original aesthetic. The exploration of one's own sexuality and maternal-filial relationships hover over most of them.
Pain and Glory is presented as the story of a film director who is in the decline of his career and suffering from severe physical pain. Salvador Mallo's (Antonio Banderas) health problems inevitably cause him to review his life and try to close some of the wounds he still has open.
Alternating between the past and the present, we learn about his childhood, when his parents moved to the Valencian town of Paterna in the 1960s in search of a better life, and how he experienced his first desire there. We will accompany him in his painful love lived in Madrid in the 80s and we will witness his refuge in cinema and writing as a remedy to try to forget the pain.
What hurts Salvador the most is not being able to do his art again, without it he feels empty and the only way to fill it is by returning to writing. Something that is helped by some reencounters.
To be honest, what attracted me to see the film was the main cast. Antonio Banderas is one of my favourite actors, and the more years go by the more I like him. He has long since abandoned that aura of the roguish, innocent-looking heartthrob to show that he is capable of playing whatever is put in front of him. Moreover, as a person he has managed to make himself respected by the media, which is not easy in this land where we love a bit of gossip.
Asier Etxeandía is perfect as Alberto Crespo, the actor obsessed with Salvador. His monologue is a work of art. This is another actor I love, especially his way of speaking and his voice. As a curiosity, he left a successful series to participate in this filming.
On the female side we find two actresses playing Jacinta, Salvador's mother, in childhood and in the present. Penélope Cruz plays a role already familiar to her. I don't know why, but this actress is not capable of transmitting the characters well, it seems to me that she always does the same thing.

Speaking of Goya Awards, this film was the winner of the 2020 edition, winning the most important awards: Best Film, Direction, Actor, Original Screenplay, Supporting Actress, Editing and Original Music.
It was not satisfied with that, as it went on to win all the film awards worldwide. It was nominated for Best International or Foreign Language Film at the Oscars, Golden Globes, BAFTA, César, European Film Awards and Ariel Awards, winning the latter for Best Ibero-American Film.
In addition to the above, Antonio Banderas' performance was awarded at the Cannes Film Festival and nominated at the Oscars and Golden Globes for Best Actor.
This is a film with autobiographical overtones without being a biopic, but it gives us an insight into Almodóvar's background and opens the door to a better understanding of his work.
In some reviews that I have consulted when preparing this review they speak of slowness or boredom, although in my case I experienced nothing of the sort, as this film is all about reading looks and understanding gestures, immersing you in marvellous dialogues that ooze love for art and its creation.
