Hello, fresh review from me ;). Have a good night / good day.

Recently, my girlfriend and I have watched quite a lot of series and films about women and for women. Some of them will receive their own text (e.g. Hazbin Hotel, Lioness), and I have already published an opinion about Woman and the Sea. Today I will share with you my opinion about Poor Things. A film by a controversial, characteristic, characterful, solid and talented Greek creator. Yorgos Lantimos is one of the most interesting directors I have ever encountered. Although I'm not a fan of it, because I've only seen Lobster (which I don't like by the way), but once in a while it wouldn't hurt to watch something more ambitious and artistic. One that forces you to think, raises difficult topics that concern each (most) of us, asks difficult questions (or rather, provokes us to give painful answers?), and is characterized by (or inspiring, or both at the same time, if you prefer) artistry. Sometimes vulgarly, usually directly or brusquely, but always in an elegant form. It can be repulsive, but it's not at the level of vulgar street comedians who focus on simple entertainment. Coming back to artistic cinema, I wouldn't be able to sustain it in the case of a series (or any other, longer form), or at least I can't do it for now. It's different for a single movie. Here it is easier to grit your teeth and force yourself to pay attention for even 2.5 hours.

The review is spoiler-free, but I must reveal one thing. This will be the only spoiler you will encounter in this text. Anyway, the movie tells us this pretty quickly, so I don't think it's a big problem. One of the first scenes is a woman's suicide. As it turns out, she is the protagonist of the film (if you haven't seen the trailers, he he), who was brought back to life thanks to Dr. Godwin Baxter. We found out that the woman was pregnant, so Willem Dafoe came up with the idea of swapping their brains. An unborn baby (I assume he was 6 or 7 months old at most) and an adult woman, probably about 30 years old. This may seem like a simple task to some, thinking that babies and children respond in a relatively self-controlled way like adults. I don't want to come off as someone saying obvious things as if they were secret knowledge. The point is that we often don't think about it on a daily basis. We have simply forgotten, more or less, how we behaved ourselves long ago. Children are more direct in words, actions and reactions, something like disturbed people. But as small, sweet creatures, they don't have the strength to harm anyone. They also cannot speak, and children sometimes repeat certain rude words after their elders when they do something they don't like or meet someone they don't like. I don't know how often or if in every case, but an active parent will also notice by his facial expression that something is wrong with his child, before he signals it with a loud roar (translating into human language in a slightly vulgar, joking way: "Mother, where the fuck is dinner?!" , "Dad, read me bedtime stories, because your tone of voice calms me down.") This is where the stairs begin, and for such a role to be good and convincing, it must be performed by a good actor or actress and director.

And in this case that is exactly the case. I won't lie, I liked Lily Gladstone more in Killers of the Flower Moon, but that's only because I prefer "normal" cinema that doesn't involve me in that way. I'm avoiding judgment here because both films are great, as are the directors. Ok, Yorgos is worse, if I have to compare (something like an old, very experienced and talented fighter vs. a young and talented fighter, looking through the prism of skills), but Martin Scorsese is unfortunately closer to the end of his career, and he has already done his job. The Greek, however, has the potential to be the next great director who will add his contribution to world cinematography and culture.) Coming back to the actresses, because this is their paragraph, they both played amazingly well. Probably more than one film lover noticed that at the last Oscars (and other film competitions), there was fierce competition between them. It's hard for me to say which one was better. It's as if I had to choose between a meal from the Master Chef of the best restaurant in a big city and a signature dish from my Grandma, who has many years of experience in hosting large weddings and events where food is an important part. A matter of preference.

Emma Stone could be annoying, but that was the director's goal and vision for both of them. I say both because the actress had a lot of input into the shape and development of her character. If the information I've heard isn't false, Emma Stone had full authority when it came to the bed scenes. She decided what to show viewers and for how long. By the way, both of them are very pleased with the cooperation (like the rest of the crew, Dafoe and Mark Ruffalo praised their cooperation with the Greek). Yes, the scenes are strong, but if you want to see something more "tightening up" the atmosphere and lighter (but also not easy!), I recommend Blue Is The Warmest Color. The scenes in Poor Things can be treated this way, but they serve a different purpose. Contrary to appearances (I heard different opinions on the Internet, my girlfriend had the same opinion), these are not pornographic scenes. Erotica can sometimes be harsh, and porn can be presented in a more delicate form, such as films by X-Art studios, Bellesa, Hegre. Or those directed by women. Generally speaking, "intimate porn" is quite a large part of the market. The scenes in Poor Things are a bit more erotic. We mainly see the heroine's breasts, we see the male or female crotch a maximum of 5 times in total (maybe 7 or 8 if I looked away for a moment at the wrong moment). As far as I know, she played all the scenes herself, without a stunt double. If that was the case, I respect your courage.

Returning to more spiritual experiences, Emma Stone brilliantly showed the transformation scene. The director additionally emphasized this by changing the colors, atmosphere, and fewer and fewer abstract elements. She showed a wide range of skills in facial expressions and voice acting. You can also see it in the way it moves, depending on the stage it is in. A very consistent and well-thought-out production and role. Emma Stone does all the things I don't even dare spoil to you with genuine conviction. As if they were completely natural to her. Just like they might behave as adults if we didn't reject these behaviors at a certain stage of development. It doesn't matter whether she is sad, happy, experiences orgasm, embarrassment, wants someone else's sadness (Germans call it Schadenfreude), is afraid, is curious, allows herself to be taken advantage of - she does all this with great sincerity and conviction. If someone says it's easy, I'll say this - kicking a rag ball is also easy, so let's go to the fields and each of us will be like Lewandowski, ok?
Will Dafoe, Mark Ruffalo and Ramy Youseef also showed good acting. I don't like actors 2 and 3, my attitude towards them is similar to how I judge the director, but as you probably know (if you know my previous reviews), I like to put my emotions aside when judging. The actor playing the Hulk introduced us to a character that differs significantly from the image he created in the Marvel universe. In Poor Things, he played the role of a pickup artist who wants to have fun with young women all the time, changing them when they start to get bored. He is not a bad boy, and if he is, he is presented in a somewhat bizarre and comedic way. He's closer to a joker, like Jaskier from The Witcher. Such a soft dumpling who can't contain her sexual desire. Dafoe played the role of the creator of the protagonist, and his character serves as a figure of God and father at the same time. The role is not too complicated and extensive. Just an ordinary mad scientist. who wants to have a child, but above all suffers from a God complex. I don't know if I've seen this specific creation somewhere, but there are some that I recognize from other works of culture (a crazy/wronged/misunderstood and rejected scientist with divine ambitions) and they fit it like a glove. I've seen them too many times. However, this is not a problem because the director does not pay much attention to it. I don't know Mr. Youssef, but from what I see it's a matter of my ignorance, not low recognition. He played the role of a sensitive and calm man really well. It's hard for me to say anything more about it without going into spoilers. His role gains depth and significance by the end of the story. The message behind it is important, just like several others that the director (and the author of the book, because it is an adaptation of a 1992 book by a Scotsman named Alasdair Gray) put in this film.

To the visual sphere, Yorgos' artistry, references to old cinematography (?), etc. I won't comment. I don't like this aspect and I don't like (although I appreciate and respect the quality! I'll happily watch it once every few years.) the director's style, so I'll just move on to the summary. I won't rate it because I don't know how to rate it. It's simply worth seeing. This is an extraordinary production from a director who escapes numerous patterns and ways of thinking. There are few creators (and if you take away comedies like South Park, Hazbin Hotel, the first three seasons of Rick and Morty, there are even fewer of them) who can show that right-wing and left-wing values make sense and can be combined, at least in some version that is convenient for us. As I wrote in the introduction, Yorgos loves to ask difficult questions that require difficult, sometimes even painful answers. So far, I haven't seen any director who showed something that I heard as a child and have been repeating for several years - our perception transmits reality through several layers. E.g. what we want/what we must do, what are our duties towards society/what are our duties towards ourselves, what kind of person do we want to be/what kind of person do we have to be, e.g. due to our character defects or how to combine the desire to escape from society with some interactions so as not to lose contact with reality. I have oversimplified it, but expanding this thread could involve expanding the entire text, and it was just an example. Ultimately, it is not Lobster, which was like a hurricane in my brain and turned it into a brothel to match. It's a little lighter, which only worked better for him. This will make us ask ourselves more questions about ourselves.

Ostatnio wraz z moją dziewczyną, zobaczyliśmy dość dużo seriali i filmów o kobietach i dla kobiet. Część z nich dostanie swój osobny tekst (jak np. Hazbin Hotel, Lioness), a opinię o Woman and the Sea już opublikowałem.

Wracając do bardziej duchowych doznań, Emma Stone świetnie pokazała scenę przemiany.
Will Dafoe, Mark Ruffalo i Ramy Youseef również zaprezentowali dobre aktorstwo.

Po prostu warto go zobaczyć.

Among dark moments, it is indispensable to find some spaces where we can feel free to laugh, enjoy and think in things that are not dark. This is how last few days have felt in my country (Venezuela) and even I wasn't and I'm not in the mood. I've found myself looking for moments where I can free my mind of all the darkness, we're going through. So, that was how I finally ended up giving an oportunity to a really polemic movie, Let's talk a little about:

Poor Things is a movie released in 2023. It has a duration of 141 minutes and it is a science fiction comedy with its drama moments here and there. It was starred by Emma Stoned, Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe and Ramy Youssef. And it was positioned as one of the best movies of last year.
Disclaimer: This movie has an amount of sex and explicits nudity scenes. ⚠️

What is this movie about? It is complicated to explain without giving some spoilers but basically it follows the life of Bella Baxter (Emma Stone) a woman, who was came back to life by Scientific doctor Godwin Baxter (Dafoe) with a very particular method and become an important experiment about humans social qualities development and learning.

What do I think about it? Well tell you I like it could be perfectly a contradiction. I can only say it disturbed me but I enjoyed the development and construction of every character and the structure, photo and set up of the whole movie, and how everything was connected to Bella's character development. What I like the most of this story was the unexpected experience you live a long the whole movie, It wasn't a predictible movie estructure. I cannot tell you I got in love with any character or that it is a magic story, But I can tell you it is the kind of movie that when you watch it and analyze it you can see how brilliant it is presented.

Do I recommend this movie? If you're into oscars movies, then you have to watch this one. Poor things is an intelligent story, it is the kind of movie that is not made to have a good time but to think and analyze so you can enjoyed it. I cannot lie to you, I cannot say I loved it but I liked it that I watched it because it is interesting in a semiotic manner.
Thanks for reading 'till this point, If you decide to give it a try or if you have watched it before, I hope you're review in the comments.

The plot follows Bella's curious discovery of the world... exploring deep themes of freedom, morality, and empowerment. As this surreal story progresses, we get caught up in a vortex of absurd situations, but at the same time they serve to reflect all those complexities of the human condition in general... I feel that one of the great things about this movie is its incredible cast. Emma Stone gives us a really outstanding performance, capturing all the innocence and evolution of Bella with a lot of authenticity and feeling, I'm not surprised at all that she won the Oscar for this role, super deserved.
This actress shows an incredible gradual transformation, from a primitive creature, to a strong and brave woman, who starts to question so many things... I really liked this, how they carried all this development. Also Willem Dafoe shines incredibly in his performance of the strange scientist, putting an imposing presence to his character, it's great the way he transmits us those layers of mystery and complexity within the same story, leaving the viewers constantly intrigued by his motivations... he makes them think and intuit many things, I really appreciate this, if a character makes you think and try to anticipate what is happening, it means they have you hooked, I really enjoyed this.

Also, one cannot omit the great performances of Rami Youssef and Mark Ruffalo, the latter being nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars, I feel he did excellent. They bring those comic moments and emotional depth to the story, the interplay between these curious characters create a fascinating contrast, challenging some preconceived notions about morals and societal behavior. As for the direction as such, I feel Lanthimos did it in a masterful way, why lie, watching this film.. it felt like every frame was art, with careful attention to detail and avant-garde aesthetics, that defies all things typical or conventional cinematic shots.. the use of vibrant colors and distorted angles in certain aspects, immerses us in a world out of a dream, something that seems to make little sense, where reality and fantasy simply blend in a captivating way...
Now, let's talk a little bit about the “controversy” that has been revolving around this film... it is worth mentioning that this movie is rated R, that is to say for adults... and even so it has been criticized for taking a little too far the somewhat explicit scenes of sexual relations, even calling it “Porn Things” I really didn't feel this kind of unnecessary scenes, or that they only wanted to feed the morbid.. the main character is supposed to begin to explore her desires, even Emma Stone herself has defended the intimate scenes of the film, saying that they are essential to convey the journey of Bella, who experiences the world in a whole new way and enjoys her sexual awakening. I guess this may come is that they feel rejection as it is a relatively “innocent” character, but they forget that the evolution of the character even if it is something fast is there, Bella is not a newborn, nor thinks like a child, at least not always, neither is she a disabled character, she grew up, obviously not in a typical way, because a fantastic female character is being portrayed and I think many people didn't get to connect with that. And as a female character, like anyone else in general, she can choose how to live her sexual life...

The script of this movie, I thought it was good.. with the occasional flaw, but it accomplishes its goal.. it invites us to reflect on individual freedom, social oppression and questioning established norms, this director is not afraid to address controversial issues, this is good, so people who see it, can examine their own prejudices. I think this film is not for everyone, it depends a lot on the type of sensitivity you have, that means that just because I don't find some sequences uncomfortable, doesn't mean they are not for other people, but to label this film as “super extravagant” or “offensive” I think is too much.

Generally speaking... Poor Things is a unique experience, whether it is for good or bad, I repeat, it depends a lot on your own perceptions and sensitivity. I personally liked it, I feel it is a very artistic work, that challenges the different realities and perceptions, although it is not for all tastes, those who want to see something different and surreal, this film is ideal to finish it, have a drink and say: “indeed, it is cinema” haha, if you are a person who is very uncomfortable with sexual scenes, and do not feel like a story with many nuances and deep messages... This is not your movie, it's a given that you won't enjoy it, and if this type of movie is not your thing, that's perfectly fine too.
My rating for this movie is a.. 9/10. Poor Things when you finish watching it can leave you impressed, captivated, and thoughtful... with an immense desire to go and talk about it with someone else, this director has proven once again to be very good at what he does, unafraid to tell challenging and unique stories, without a doubt a gem, when I saw it I understood perfectly why it was being so popular, and how it swept so many awards. A pity I couldn't see it on the big screen, but well... I hope you enjoyed this review, I share with you the trailer of this film so you can take a look at it, and appreciate its unique aesthetics, see you in the next review, take care!!!

Poor Things, is for the moment the last cinematographic work of director Yorgos Lanthimos, a film that since its release was announced, captured everyone's attention for its theme, aesthetics and stellar performances of its actors. This surreal and creative film captivated many people (including me), from the first moment to the last, how could it not?, if among its particularity the performances are organic and touches deep issues in a curious way that left more than one person thinking.
Bella Baxter is a sort of female Frankenstein who, as her brain develops, inevitably begins to become more aware of herself and her surroundings, yearning as a consequence to know the outside world, since her creator, a rather peculiar scientist, holds her "captive" because he wants to protect her. Bella, being like a child in the body of an adult, is very clumsy and unconscious in her actions, but little by little she becomes more intelligent and manages to leave her home in the company of a man with dubious intentions, but who will accompany her in her adventure of self-discovery that shows different realities in a surreal and even a little bizarre way, but without losing the artistic or deviating from the messages that want to be represented.

Emma Stone as Bella Baxter undoubtedly performed one of the most challenging roles of her career, shining with a charismatic performance and facial expressions that, let's be honest, are rarely seen in movies. Her portrayal of Bella Baxter is simply mesmerizing, perfectly capturing the complexity and vulnerability of this character that to many might seem disastrous and misunderstood, but what do you people expect?, she is a brain in mid-development in an adult body (to say the least). All the actors in the film stand out, Mark Ruffalo as Duncan is a walking meme, "poor" man hahahaha.
The visual aesthetics of the film is another aspect that deserves to be highlighted, I mean, it shows scenarios that look like paintings, I was fascinated by them. From the dazzling Scottish landscapes to the meticulous Victorian era details, the vibrant color palette and beautifully designed sets immerse the viewer into the quirky and surreal world of Poor Things (how many times have I written surreal already?).

Now, I come with a curious fact 👀 or well, maybe it's not curious, but at least I haven't seen this being talked about in the popular generality. It turns out that Poor Things is based on a novel by the writer Alasdair Gray published in 1992, that is, this story that was visually represented to us is not new, it has been around for years and it just happens that they decided to adapt it in these times. This fact is important to me because I think many believe that Yorgos created the story, to which obviously he must have given his personal touch and changed some things, but it's not a story created purely by him nor is it a progre creation of "the new era" (as I read that some people commented out there in social networks), the story of Bella Baxter has been told for years, we just didn't know it.
Poor Things is one of those strange movies that not everyone will like, but because of its production quality and powerful messages, it stands out, even being recognized with great awards (no wonder, whether you like the movie or not, the work in it is spectacular). I personally found Poor things to be a story of self-discovery, identity exploration, freedom, defiance of social conventions, gender differences and power disparity, simply told in an "exotic" way, without fear of showing how ugly our world can be.
I recommend this movie, but please watch it without children, as it has high sexual content, otherwise, enjoy it or... maybe not! 😆

This movie has almost two and a half hours of filming and has wonderful performances among them are: Emma Stone (Bella Baxter), Mark Ruffalo (Ducan Wedderburn), Willem Dafoe (Godwin Baxter), Ramy Youssef (Max Candless) among other actors directed by Yorgos Lanthimos. The story is about a girl who tried to commit suicide, but a scientist who thinks he is "God" changes her brain to that of a newborn baby (which is his own son).
Well actually I wasn't very excited to see it a long time ago despite the boom because I was scared of its weirdness, the simple sometimes in terms of entertaining is more comfortable to watch so it was not among my plans, starting the film actually I found interesting the theme of the colors used and most of all the dialogues, the one who performed the operation calls himself God but in reality does not get to be the God of Bella? Creating a helpless creature defying nature because in one part of the film you see a pig with the body of a chicken, WTF? But that's what makes this movie interesting it's wonderfully uncomfortable.
We have a girl as a blank canvas, she as God said "Her mental age and her body are not in sync" so Bella is someone who is about to discover herself and the world, so in my opinion the fragments are very well divided not only by location but by her stage of growth, at the beginning we have someone who is like a little girl who is just starting to talk, but she is also discovering the morbid pleasures of sexual self-discovery, because even though her brain is growing her body is that of a mature woman, which at no time does the film demonizes it or makes it look bad, in a certain way it exalts it.
Bella as a character seems to me quite complex, Emma Stone is a great actress and certainly played very well the role of a person who does not know what she is doing besides going through complex circumstances and feelings, as the film goes by the character construction is completed having at the end a woman who made mistakes but is a person who is integrated into society in her own way without taboos and with her own criteria.
Talking about the other two characters that he considered relevant in the story we have God, Bella's creator, he really scared me at the beginning of the movie but in the end he is a character with personality that doesn't pull God for the convenience of the script, His father never showed him any kind of affection instead he hurt him many times physically for the "good of science" that's why he doesn't know how to handle Bella's feelings letting her leave and have free will in her decisions even though he also misses her, on the other hand we have Ducan Wedderburn this man was her door to color, since he began to show her the world without a doubt I hate him hahahaha he is a pretty misogynist character and even though he has relevance he is not to my liking.
Despite everything, it is not rosy. Undoubtedly something that makes this film is that it is slow and sometimes heavy and repetitive an example in the sex scenes of Bella, I understand that it is an important part in the discovery of an individual and does not take it as taboo but that they show me about ten scenes of her, in the same position with the same face because I got bored and tired but not to the level of wanting to remove the film.
Undoubtedly, Poor Creatures is a film without taboo that has complex messages as a fairly novel protagonist, at the artistic level I loved it and certainly if it would be a film that I would recommend to someone who wants to see a wonderful movie but not to people with closed minds because if it would be a tato uncomfortable, then 9/10.

English
Of the films nominated for the Oscar this year 2024, this is the first film that I see, although the winner was making positive comments for several months, it is not the kind of film that calls my attention, unlike this one that has a totally different plot and of which I had read and heard many interesting things that I might like.
This movie met my expectations in every way, without having seen the other movies I would have given it the top award, for its originality and for all the awards it got, very well deserved, including best actress for Emma Stone. But it doesn’t work that way, I still like this movie, including the scenes not suitable for minors.

Bella Baxter (Emma Stone) is an adult woman who is the product of a scientific experiment in which the mother’s body and the child’s brain were fused. At least it was not the brain of a goat in the body of a woman, and eye I thought so when I saw that at the beginning the different animals were shown mixed and seeing the behavior of play and jumps that had the character of Bella, at that moment many things went through my head.
Then we meet Max (Ramy Youssef) who is a medical student and a big fan of Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe), the scientist who created all this crazy experiments and who is considered Bella’s father. Max will be in charge of recording Bella’s evolution and will be the one with whom she will socialize in the early stages of her life, until she meets Duncan (Mark Ruffalo) who will take her to meet the world, new experiences and new people.

The award for best actress is well deserved for Emma Stone, her character is a baby who is growing up (only in mind), learning new things every day, she has moments in which she lets herself be spoiled, as any child would do and so she grows up to discover her sexuality and the satisfaction that this gives her. When the time comes for her to leave and get to know life, her father supports her in the only way he can and lets her live her freedom.
The black and white that the film offers in the first scenes and the transition to color is impressive and more so at the moment it happens, I don’t know if the meaning is that at that moment she really started to live and started to see her life in color or was it just me who saw it that way. As for the image after the film changes to color it is spectacular, the colors are vivid and the orange and blue tones are beautiful, you can better detail the costumes and the staging.

The characters are only there to help Bella live, whether they are good or bad experiences.
Max, is the understandable man, who supports and accepts Bella’s personality and loves her for her different way of being. Duncan, although he is a character who just wanted to have fun, is overbearing, macho and very heavy, he ended up becoming obsessed with her because of Bella’s resistance to being conventional, instead she always seeks to experiment and be free, a situation that ended up involving Duncan in this circle.
Dr. Godwin has given everything to science since he was a child, literally everything. A father who offers his daughter the opportunity to choose, knowing that she suffers for those choices. But who also welcomes her with open arms.
In the same way the rest of the secondary characters that cross Bella’s life throughout the film, show her how the world is, the good and the bad, achieving a growth in the character’s conscience.

Although knowing from the beginning where Bella comes from and all the abominations we see on screen make you think that everything is crazy, for me the movie about Bella Baxter’s life is about discovery, freedom, evolution, learning about life through experiences and finding the true path at the end knowing who you really are and not what they say you should be or who you were.
It is a film that I recommend to those over 18 years old, as it has sexual scenes according to the context of what is told. It is a film with an original story and with a development that takes you through each of the scenes without giving you time to get bored, with a satisfactory and fair conclusion for all the characters. In conclusion, I really liked this movie.

Weekends are ideal to have some free time and maybe enjoy the cinema, or watch a movie at home, the idea is to have new perspectives and hang out. Therefore, today I will tell you about a very popular movie in recent months, this due to the performance of "Emma Stone" in her role as Bella.
I am struck by the initial setting of this film in an era without color, the photography is really impressive, all in black and white and with a different look to see what the character perceives, and then take us to the color in a series of transitions of the time in which the events unfold.
Certainly the film's central plot, based on a kind of forbidden experiment on humans, a monstrous idea in the style of Frankenstein, is still murky. Do you remember that famous character?
One thing I liked was the paradox of Bella's life, using the mother's body as a recipient to develop in it the brain of her human creature (her baby). A single being that is reborn or hooked to life, but in an already adult body.
Among the characters, the scientists are great on stage, driven by the interest of learning and pretending to be gods. Obviously that among all the scientific entanglement is a bit sinister what is posed by playing with life and making the decision for others and even above God.
Basically Bella is a unique creature, studied by science, a strange creature that in the end surprises by exploiting a young mind to the fullest. Perhaps living thousands of experiences together leads her to grow and learn in an accelerated way?

I must clarify that it is not a film for all tastes, sometimes I came to feel a little disgust, surprise and even tenderness for the exaggerated example of human emotions when faced with the misfortune of social differences. In a sarcastic way they approach the social system.
Bella's speech after learning and absorbing knowledge through reading is great, I loved that indefensible power of curiosity and the need to understand, even stronger than the carnal desires that obviously the girl had already explored, because she even falls into complicated worlds.
It's a strange movie, I couldn't describe it differently, just strange and captivates you only to understand the ending. But there is good scenery overall, excellent costuming to complement the period, amazing makeup and some comic amidst the absurdity of the play.
It is not a film I would recommend for children, besides having strong scenes of a sexual nature, it is perhaps more for the film lover, the aficionado who can get to extract elements that will please him. To my mind, overall in terms of stars ★ the acting is a 10. But the film could easily be, for me, much less than that rating.

I can only say: tastes are different, and don't judge me, but, personally I didn't like the movie... I LOVED it, for me the best movie I've seen in a long, long time (even though I loved Oppenheimer). This story tells us a new world from the hand of Bella Baxter, as her first words and reflections. Here we see an incredible transformation about irrationality and later intelligence.
The plot of Poor Things questions the character, and questions us as human beings, there is constantly questioning about morality and freedom of being in a world full of taboos and rules. The most interesting thing about this film is that it does not seek to give speeches or reflections on some topics, with different narratives it manages to touch on issues that harm our society such as poverty, sexism and judgments on the behavior of others.
Why does the plot of this film question us? Because precisely with its unique aesthetics and diverse scenes it creates discomfort, and that discomfort only denotes our judgments about what is morally correct, and how we expect cinema to be perfect, neat and correct? And I don't agree, because art should question us, and take us out of our comfort zone.

Even being in love with this production, I can admit that it is not a movie for everyone, for example, I recommended this movie to a friend of mine and she: HATES IT.... That's the best example I can give you. This movie has a lot of sex scenes, and people invalidate it a lot because of that, I feel that, they are completely justified, because just as morality is a pillar of this plot, so is sexuality.
I don't want to do spoilers, but, there is one scene that everyone criticizes, but, to me it is a reflection of our bizarre society, a regrettable act that everyone does that. Having said that, we can talk about the production and the photography that for me, is MAGIC MAGIC MAGIC MAGIC, at the beginning it is black and white and the change to color is perfect.... I'm writing this, and having already passed the Oscars, I have to say that I was definitely hoping they would take that award.

Now, the characters... Bella Baxter was a perfectly built character, with an incredible development, during the movie I think we can see like 5 different Bellas... And thank life and fate for giving that Oscar to Emma Stone, never so happy. A character that also had a great arc was Dr. Godwin, a really particular scientist who has a process of adaptation or discovery of pain.
Goodness is represented in this movie by Dr. Max, who falls in love with Bella and lets her be free in all aspects.... Now yes, the character that surprised me the most, especially for the actor and was Duncan played by Mark Ruffalo, a completely different view of what he had given us as an actor and his character although I hate him, achieved its purpose for the story.

I feel everyone should see Poor Things, it is a UNIQUE movie experience, whether you like it or not, you get to experience seeing something unconventional. I think what I loved most about the movie is that with a completely bizarre world it scrambles the moralities of a rather strange society. I would watch this movie a thousand times again.
I hope you liked this post a lot. See you soon.

Poor Things is a film that has generated controversy since its release due to several aspects, including the performances, some shocking scenes, and the portrayal of the main characters.
First of all, it is worth mentioning the performances of the main actors. Emma Stone masterfully plays the doctor's creation, convincingly conveying the character's anguish and confusion. Her performance manages to generate empathy in the viewer and keep him interested in the development of the story.
On the other hand, Mark Ruffalo surprises in his role as a vivid lawyer, showing a dark and ambiguous facet that contrasts with the public image he usually has on screen. Ruffalo manages to convey the moral ambiguity of his character in a subtle and convincing way, which adds depth to the plot.
Willen Dafoe, meanwhile, plays a Frankenstein-esque doctor with a mixture of scientific obsession and overweening ambition. His performance is intense and disturbing, managing to create a character that generates chills in the viewer.
A scientist named Godwin Baxter played by Willem Dafoe finds the body of a pregnant woman who had jumped off a bridge, manages to revive her but inserts the baby's brain into the woman.
In the movie you are told how Bella Baxter, the role played by Emma Stone, is developing, we can see from a renewed perspective the growth of the woman, so much so that later they find themselves in a love triangle with Max McCandles, played by Remy Youssef, and Duncan Wedderburn by Mark Ruffalo, navigating between love, the manipulation of men, desire and the pleasures of the world.
It is a film that focuses on controversial issues for the public such as women's sexual liberation, certainly a film that has been celebrated for its originality and courage.
As for shocking scenes, there are several that stand out in the film. One of them is the one in which the doctor's creation discovers her origin and suffering, showing a heartbreaking vulnerability and desperation. This sequence manages to convey the tragedy of the situation in a moving and disturbing way.
Another scene that makes an impact is the one in which the vivid lawyer reveals his true nature, showing a dark and dangerous side that endangers the other characters. This sequence generates tension and surprise, keeping the viewer on edge and attentive to every movement.
Poor Things is a controversial film that stands out for the performances of its protagonists, the shocking scenes and the representation of complex and disturbing characters. Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo and Willen Dafoe masterfully convey the emotions and dilemmas of their characters, keeping the viewer interested and moved throughout the plot. Undoubtedly, this is a film that leaves no one indifferent and invites us to reflect on human nature and the limits of science.
The film is based on the novel of the same name by Alasdair Gray and is directed by Yorgos Lanthimos. For some people the film is very unpleasant from the face of that deformed Willem Dafoe to a somewhat disturbing ending but it manages to culminate the work in style.
The film is excellent, with a Victorian and very cyberpunk atmosphere, it is funny, controversial, convoluted, extravagant and provocative, exciting, sexy, different, I've never seen anything like it.
Poor Things has 11 Academy Award nominations, including Best Director, Best Lead Actress for Emma Stone and Best Supporting Actor for Mark Ruffalo.
A very good recommendation to watch before the Oscars.

Today I bring you a movie recommendation that I really liked, at first I thought it was very twisted but then with an open mind I think I understood the point of the movie, beyond what is seen at first glance.
Poor things, it does seem a little twisted, and at the beginning it gave me those Frankenstein vibes because of how everything starts, we could even say that if it is its modern version, you already realize it when they show us a surgeon who seemed to be quite ahead of his time and likes to experiment with absolutely any part of the body and making his scientific research and experiments advance quite a bit.
But it is not the story of this surgeon but of a beautiful woman reborn as Bella Baxter and when I say reborn I mean revived, since this woman actually committed suicide and was found by Dr. Baxter when the body was still warm. The interesting thing about how things turn out is that that was not her true self and there was no need to know, Dr. Baxter revived her but with a brain transplant, so she was no longer herself, so there was no point in knowing her past. If she wasn't going to remember any of that, plus there was the dilemma that people who tried to commit suicide are taken to prison for thinking about such a sin.
When Bella wakes up, she starts her life from 0, she knows nothing and has to learn everything again, like a baby in the body of an adult (👀) although her development is happening quite quickly, so much so that Bella herself understands at one point that she needs to go out into the outside world but is not allowed to. Firstly because if anyone sees her that way they will think she has a serious problem and secondly in case someone recognizes her and it is revealed that she tried to commit suicide and would go to prison, although basically these are the fears that Dr. Baxter had because he became attached to her.as if it were his own daughter.
Likewise, Bella ends up escaping and living life like never before, like no other person had done, one would even say free from everything, and in fact, this is one of the messages of the film. Although if we go into a little more context, which I don't want to do, you're going to think at first that this is sick and disgusting, because there was a fine line between things that shouldn't be crossed. However, what must be understood is how we should explore the world without prejudice and this does not mean that we will do as we please without caring about the suffering of others, but rather live life according to our tastes, without fear of our truths. opinions, without fear of being hurt, without fear of being judged in this society that tries to impose more rules on us every day that end up denigrating the person.
I recommend watching this movie with an open mind and I understand that some scenes may seem sick but when the movie really develops, that's when we understand the true message and I would like to know if anyone has already seen it and what did you think? I would genuinely like to know someone else's opinion because I liked it and I feel that it was a very well done job, plus it must be admitted that in recent years there have not been so many successes with the films, they all seemed more of the same.
RECOMENDADA...
I've been waiting for this one to finally become available on my Plex server for a while. It finally came down yesterday and even though it was quite late I decided to start it up anyway despite the looming witching hour. I figured I would fall asleep or turn it off halfway through and that was almost exactly what I did because the way that it starts out feels like one of those artsy films that is designed to win Academy Awards while having no real appeal to massive audiences. At times the director decisions seemed like the work of a film school student who has no budget but is instead focusing on trying to do things in a different and odd way in order to get attention.
Now I am going to say this right out of the gate: This film is WEIRD and it's that exact strangeness that is going to chase people with a low attention span away from it in the first 30 minutes. It moves very slowly at first but if you can manage to make it through those slow 30 minutes you will be rewarded with one of the better movies that I have seen in a long time.
Be warned as well though that this is not something you should watch with younger kids because there is a ton of sex in it. I was unaware of this going into it but others may have known beforehand and the fact that many people likely already knew that Emma Watson spends a great deal of time in this with her clothes off, may have been a motivation for many to watch it.
I don't want to spoil things too much because it is more interesting to discover it as you go along but basically Emma plays the starring role of "Bella" and "Bella" is a fully grown woman who has diminished mental capabilities to the point where she behaves like a toddler and is frequently a danger to others and herself because of this. One other character says something along the lines of "she is quite beautiful for a retard" and I am surprised that they put that line is seeing as how the world is so triggered by that word these days. The film takes place in what at first appears to be the 1800's or something and believe it or not "retard" is actually a medical term to this day, despite what PC rules appeared in the past 10 years or so.
Willem Dafoe plays the role of Dr. Godwin who is frequently referred by Bella and others simply as "God." He is an unconventional scientist who is considered one of the most brilliant minds of his time by his unseen peers but he also has a penchant for "science at all costs" including mutilating various animals and putting their bodies together such as a bulldog with a duck's head and a bulldog head with a duck body. This is how they introduce us to the fact that somehow, Bella is in fact a creation of his - but I am not going to reveal how that came to be.
"God" acts as a father figure of sorts for Bella and is extremely protective of her since she has the mind of a toddler including not having full capability of speech. She has a playful manner and seeks to destroy things constantly, much like a toddler actually would if they were large enough to reach the plates on the table.
Eventually, Bella's curiosity gets the best of her and she gains enough intellect over an amount of time that we, the audience, are not made aware of, and she is permitted to go out into the world for the first time in her life.
She approaches everything as a child would in that she has no fear of what others think of her and is routinely the life of the party because of this. The way that she dresses is also the way that a child would dress in that every time she leaves her room she is dressed like a fairy princess or something else equally ridiculous. Yet her beauty and fearlessness of what others think is precisely why others are drawn to her even if she ends up being quite crude at times. There is something else that draws others to her, but I am not going to tell you what that is... you'll have to watch the film to figure that out but let's just say that there is a reason why someone as attractive as Emma Stone was chosen for this role. I'm seriously impressed that Emma pulled off this role as it couldn't have been easy for her to film. You'll see why if you wisely decide to watch this movie.
While the direction and cinematography of the film can sometimes seem a bit strange switching back and forth between black and white and then to almost overly colorful, there is likely some sort of film-school fishing-for-awards something or other that is going on there.
I am not artsy or refined enough to figure out why, but many of the scenes are suddenly shown through a "peep hole" lens of sorts. Some of this I found annoying and others I just kind of went with it and accepted that they were going to for something different here and well, I can appreciate that since almost all films that make money these days seem to be carbon copies of one another and that is just boring.
This story is definitely something different and many are stating that it is one of the 10 best films of 2023. I think I agree with this idea but since I watch films from across all times and dont focus on any particular year, I don't think I could name 9 other films from 2023 even though I am quite certain I have seen that many.
I genuinely think that you should but please go into this understanding that the first 20 minutes or so are going to be quite boring. I don't know why they did this but the pace picks up dramatically from that point forward. I suppose it was necessary for character development. What do i know? I didn't go to film school I just like watching movies. Unlike the cookie-cutter superhero films of late this is definitely something different and more thought provoking. The idea of a woman entering the world with no inhibitions is pretty exhilarating and refreshing and Stone absolutely nails this role, as does almost everyone else in the cast. There is only one actor that seemed a bit out of place in the entire thing.
Unlike other good films seeking an audience, this one actually did find the audience and made $70 million over their budget with very little in the way of promotion. Fantastic! Now I hope other film-makers can carry on so that theaters don't have to be dominated with stupid Marvel and D.C. remakings of essentially the same movie over and over. This film has already been nominated for and won many awards and it will likely be highly regarded at the Oscars as well.
At the moment the only legal way to watch this film is to purchase it on Amazon Prime or AppleTV+. It is $10... this will likely change as time goes by. Searchlight is owned by Disney, so I would imagine Hulu or Disney+ will be the first places it can be streamed

Hola amigos, buenas vibras para todos.
**Hello friends, good vibes to all.
As you know we are on the eve of the Oscars awards so it is almost mandatory to catch up with the films that are giving more to talk about and look at Poor Things is doing it. Honestly, what I have read about this film is very varied, that is to say, a percentage was fascinated by it but others not so much and after having seen it, it must be said that it is not a film for everyone, it is an uncomfortable, irreverent, obscene film but in the end it brings an important message, one that seems that people find it hard to see and assimilate; that's where I think the lack of understanding of the film comes from.
Poor Things is an ode to freedom and Bella Baxter (Emma Stone) proves it. Bella is a girl who lives in the house of a renowned and particular scientist named Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). She is the product of something, of an idea of Godwin and it is thanks to him that she gradually begins to grow, to have some awareness and certain knowledge of life but at the end of the day she feels incomplete, her curiosity to know and learn about the world leads her to make a decision that will mark her for the rest of her life. I say this because it is not that she lived in captivity but it is true that she did not have the freedom to do and go where she wanted.
Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a prestigious lawyer, arrives to her life in a surprising way, but he also has his own peculiar details that make him quite peculiar. The thing is that Bella decides to embark on a trip around the world with this lawyer with the intention of expanding her knowledge and satisfy her curiosity about everything she has yet to know. In the end and unintentionally it will be an introspective journey because without realizing it, she will begin to experience things that she had never felt in her life, such as freedom and doing what she wants without being tied to anything or anyone.
As I said, this is a film that waves the flag of freedom but not from the feminist side, I don't want to see it that way, but from an angle of people and individuals as we are in the end. Bella is a person who almost all her life lived renegade of the things that make life enjoyable and meaningful so that absence of those feelings and sensations made that part of personality were off, so to speak. It is in this journey where she leaves behind some prejudices that were very notorious for the time and dedicates herself to live without looking to the sides, with all the freedom in the world but also with an astonishing naivety.
Living life without filters is complicated because we fall into the judgment of people, in the famous "what people will say" and that is something that Bella gradually learns to live with. It is a story that I found spectacular because it delves into that overcoming and evolution as individuals that many of us should have, Bella before the world was nobody and ended up being a capable, confident person with very strong convictions and all this thanks to life experiences. The world is a dark place, full of evil and many evils, something that Bella did not know; so in the face of such a shock she responds with an attitude that calls for equality and a little justice. It is true that this is a bit romantic and even cliché, but in the end it is what the film leaves us with.
The cinematography is spectacular, the costumes, the way it was filmed, the photography, the colors, the soundtrack, the setting; everything is made to fit very well in what it really is: an extremely eccentric story. It must be said that the comedy is very present with an anthological Mark Ruffalo, one of the best characters I've seen this actor play. There is nudity, there are sexual scenes and there are things that are complicated to watch, things that some will find not very digestible. Personally I found it very attractive, it is a cinema that is less and less seen and that is something to be applauded to Yorgos Lanthimos, its director, and of course to Emma Stone.
What Emma Stone did in this film is from another planet. It is a complicated character and very difficult to interpret without mentioning all the nudity and sexual scenes that she has that I already told you there are a few. Each and every one of them have a reason to be and are for the construction of the character, many people find it hard to understand this but that is the reality. They were a means to an end. Do I see her winning an Oscar? - Yes, perfectly, be careful if it is not the best role she has done in her career. Mention for Defoe who also did a great job being a kind of "modern" Frankenstein.
A film that I liked a lot, very polarized that if, but in the end being this an art is understandable that there are opinions of all kinds. I give it an 8/10. I recommend everyone to see it because I feel it is very worthwhile, the story of overcoming and evolution is very top despite the endless eccentricities that you will see. A little long, almost 2 hours 20 minutes, that was the negative but still quite enjoyable. I leave the trailer here.

***Well my people that's all for today, I hope you liked it. ¡A hug to everyone, see you next time!
After I completed a startling read of a book which I cannot wait to review, I decided to pause for a bit to see a light movie of sorts. At least that’s what I was going for till I saw the movie, Poor Things and proceeded to download it. I wasn’t too taken by the summary of the film and I’m not usually keen on watching trailers before seeing the actual movie. But because I saw Emma Stone, who is one of my top five best Hollywood actresses, I knew I had to see it.

The movie, released in September 2023 is directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and written by Tony McNamara. It stars popular actors like Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe, etc. It is based on the 1992 novel by the Scottish writer, Alasdair Gray, and follows the story of a young woman in Victorian London, who is rebirth through a brain transplant and proceeds to embark on a journey of self-discovery. It’s a two-hour-long film.

The story begins with a coloured visual of the back of a lady. She seems to be on the edge and looking down at something. It is almost clear what she tries to do and soon enough she takes the leap and falls off the bridge and into the water. The scene then shifts into monochrome video quality and this continues for about a quarter of the movie.

We see a lady who plays discordant, somewhat aggressive tunes on the piano. Her name is Bella Baxter. And then a man walks towards her, observing her as she plays with an almost proud look on his disjointed, heavily scarred face. His name is Godwin Baxter, or is fondly referred to by Bella as “God.”

The story is off to a start when Doctor Godwin brings Max, a student of his, to observe and keep company with the almost brain-dead Bella. Bella is aggressive and erratic, but Godwin is convinced that his creation is developing at an astonishing rate. He notices that Max has grown fond of Bella and takes advantage of the situation to suggest that they marry.
He gets Duncan Wedderburn to draw up a legally binding document to finalize the wedding plans with Max and Bella, but a curious Duncan wanders off to find Bella and almost instantly takes a fancy to her. He proposes that they run off at midnight to Lisbon and Bella, enraptured by thoughts of exploration agrees and gets Godwin Baxter to do same, promising to marry Max once she’s done with her explorations, much to a disgruntled Max.

It is a thrilling and sensual journey between her and Duncan once they arrive at Lisbon. Bella discovers things about her body and in turn, the cruel world around her. From Lisbon to Alexandria and then Paris where she works at a whorehouse, she meets new people and gains grounds of who she is as a person. Her formerly underdeveloped brain transformed soon enough to one befitting of her age.
She has by this time discarded Duncan and when she gets news that Godwin Baxter is dying, she comes back to London a refined and reformed woman. The story may have ended uneventfully but when her past and the people characterising it resurface, Bella must put all she’s learnt into question and make a decision. To go or to stay.
I was confused in the beginning, but I liked the progression of the story. It has an interesting start and has this eerie background sound in most of the scenes, giving it this thrillingly pregnant sensation. A feeling of foreboding.
The scenes would go from slow to incredibly fast and back again and while that is generally what makes a movie exciting, it began to go downhill in that regard for me. Apart from Emma Stone and Ruffalo who I could always trust to interpret their roles impeccably, the rest of the characters didn’t just do it as well as they should for me. However, the storyline was unique and the succession of events carried out nicely.
I like the way it explored the themes of self-discovery and awareness. I like that it brought to light without prejudice that every human is their own free man and as such shouldn’t be judged by the experiences that have shaped them into becoming who they are.
Poor Things is the kind of movie in my opinion that you’re sure to forget about almost immediately afterwards and also would not be keen to watch again, but you at least, don’t regret watching it. And that’s how I feel. It is a nicely done movie and though it didn’t hold any particular thrill for me, I do not regret watching it in the least. And on that note, I give it a 3.9/5. Highly recommended for anyone in search of something relaxed but thrilling at the same time.

The Best Picture nominees for the Oscar Awards are out, and with it my quest to see all the nominees. Among the nominees is this title and it was finally released in my country Peru, so I went to see it recently at the cinema. Its director is Giórgos Lanthimos.
Synopsis: In a London of an ancient time, Godwin Baxter is a scientist who has created a female Frankenstein, Bella Baxter. Bella Baxter, a human with the body of an adult but with the brain of a child, will begin to ask questions about herself and the outside, to answer this, she will take an adventure that will make her know different places, while she gets to know herself and the world around her.
Although it is a story with a good diversity of characters, the plot focuses on Bella, who after some first scenes, where she explores what is close, will accept an adventure that will make her develop, knowing more about herself, about humans and what she wants to do in this world.
Each place she visits will add layers of personality and knowledge to the character, while showing us how a peculiar character like her can generate intense feelings in other people, such as love, hate and desire.
While it has a tone of comedy and drama, I can not fail to mention the various sexual scenes that the film has, which somehow show a marked side of the protagonist, who explores various aspects of his being, as if it were a game.
In photography, there is a good job, mixed with imagined scenarios, makes it to some extent a magical tale. What I didn't like is the black and white beginning, which I feel doesn't generate the best result. The performances are good, highlighting Emma Watson, for the diversity of scenes she had to perform, while showing a Bella that is maturing over time.
In music and sound, although there is a work in generating sounds that repeat, show changes in tone, etc; it is not the most memorable aspect. One point to close, is the ending that although it closes the story in an excellent way, the final sequence feels a bit hollow.
Recomendable.
In the end, I think it is an excellent film, remembering that it is a film for adults, we will see the journey of development of a peculiar character such as Bella Baxter. Recommended.

This movie has given us too much to talk about, many love it, many hate it and others were not even able to see it in its entirety, this seems strange to you since no matter how bad a movie is, I never leave it halfway and even less if it is in the cinema haha
This story can be said to be a new version of Frankenstein's Monster. The premise shows us how a doctor who loved to experiment with corpses in his desire to innovate with medicine, obtains the corpse of a young woman who was not completely dead, that is, she had some life inside her, it was impossible to revive her, she was pregnant and her baby barely survived, the doctor decides to revive her with her baby's brain, creating a completely different being, there is no longer a trace of what that young woman used to be.

A young woman commits suicide by jumping into the sea, Godwin Baxter but his diminutive is “God”, this is a rather peculiar doctor, he gets her and realizes that it is not like all the corpses he usually practices with, he realizes She was pregnant and her baby was still alive, so she decided to save him, but the only way to do it was to change her brain, put it in her mother's body, that's how it came to life Bella Baxter, we They show how with the surgery her growth and evolution changed, at first she was a baby and little by little she was growing and embracing, well little by little no, the truth is at a fairly rapid level, that is when God decides to seek help from another doctor to to help you with your “experiment” to record your evolution.

God ends up adopting her so to speak, he sees her in a paternal way and although he denies it at first he does see her more as a daughter than as a simple experiment. Max Mccandles is the new doctor in charge of Bella, but upon seeing her he ends up falling in love with her, because yes, she was a beautiful young woman, he didn't really know what it was about and because she had these strange attitudes, at first he thought that It was something “retarded” but she begins to realize that she is just a girl locked up in the body of a woman.
Bella is very interested in knowing the world, exploring, being free, so she does everything possible to let her know it, God didn't want to let her out, he knew that for a creature like her it could be very dangerous, so yes, it was a very overprotective father. Max begins to doubt everything and reviews all the doctor's notes and there he discovers the truth about Bella.

At this point in the film we could say that Bella would already be in her “adolescent” stage and discovers a little about her sexuality, which she calls “the discovery of happiness.” Max realizes this and explains to her that this is not done. in public and that she has to be more modest in that regard. Godwin, seeing that Bella has grown up, tells Max to ask her to marry him, that he sees that he likes her and that he is fascinated with her, but with one enormous condition, they can only live together in his house, so if Bella accepts, They have to write a contract. Here one more character joins us in the story, the lawyer Duncan Wedderburn.

Duncan finds this contract curious and decides to see who is the most valuable lady who needs a contract. He finds her in his room and is struck by her beauty. He does intend to abuse her, since it is the first thing he does. seeing her, touching her, unlike Max, who always set limits in that sense. Duncan offers to see her and help her get to know the world, to which Bella with an adventurous spirit accepts and tells her father that she is going to leave, whether she wants to or not, and that she will later marry Max, but that she first wanted to meet him. the world.

Bella knows new places, she has many experiences and yes, many intimate relationships with Duncan, here he makes it clear to her that it is nothing serious that it is better not to get excited about him but Bella agrees with that, Bella is a person without a filter, so that when he met the friends of this prestigious lawyer he ended up leaving him ashamed. Bella no longer feels so comfortable with Duncan since he begins to be quite possessive and Bella is a free soul. In addition, he clarified that what they had was just that, but Duncan ends up falling in love with her, practically being her Karma.

Meanwhile, God and Max, in their sadness for Bella, decide to continue with the experiment and choose another young woman to do the same to her, only this one did not progress like Bella. On the other hand, Bella began to know a little more about the world, the good, the bad, the differences in social classes and she also decides to leave Duncan, which drives him crazy and he begins to connect the dots of who she really was or at least her body, she finds her previous husband and that is when we realize why her “Mother” committed suicide and decides to continue with God's office and experiments, since she became interested in medicine.

It is a quite long and strange film, that is why the summary did not feel so much like a summary, because there is a lot to tell, there is a lot to give an opinion and above all to understand, this film was harshly criticized for the sexual scenes that at one point became “repetitive” but sexuality is no longer a taboo, besides, it is a clear reference to Bella's growth, her self-discovery, at first it is the only thing she likes, then she learns more, she becomes passionate about many more things than him. The world offers her and that's life, it doesn't seem morbid to me, because many times we have praised very bad attitudes, here it is the opposite, Bella is a free person, who does not allow herself to be manipulated, she expresses what she feels, What you want, if it is a different movie, it is not for everyone and above all it is not for children, the performances are incredible apart from the fact that they have three super actors, the colors, the way they showed this very movie era was incredible, if I admit that For me it is not a movie to watch more than once.
PS: I hope I don't make this Review annoying to read ✨❤️

A woman who charts her own course towards freedom, this could very well be the logline of Poor things.
A cross between Frankenstein and Ulysses, Lanthimos' Bella Baxter is an explorer with a thirst for knowledge. A knowledge that has scientific research as a trigger, as a triggering factor and philosophical and psychological investigation as a checkpoint of the experimentation. The theory that requires empirical data to be demonstrated, tested and proven. Bella Baxter is a new Eve shaped from nothing by a god-scientist, Godwin, in fact. A new prima donna, experiment daughter of an experiment in her turn. She is her own daughter and mother.

Bella's journey is a navigation between dreamlike Dalinian and metaphysically De Chirico landscapes. The alleys of a pictorial and ideal Lisbon trace the meanders of a curious mind that simultaneously investigates itself and the world outside. Each stage of the journey is a question which in the answer generates another question. Knowledge is erotic, an unsatisfied desire that creates addiction. Ethical doubts are an inevitable side effect that appear at the crossroads, at the bifurcations of every road which from a certain point onwards can take two opposite directions: love and pleasure, respect and freedom, happiness and violence , enthusiasm and dejection. By discovering, Bella Baxter grows, learns to walk, to express herself, to be in the world. Moving from empathy to anger, from darkness to reach the light of awareness. Because we must experience not only good but also horror, so we can know the world and when we know the world the world is ours.
Bella Baxter is the representation of life as a process in perpetual movement and change, impossible to trap and define absolutely. It is the demonstration that a method works and is valid until another is found and then things done in a certain way start to be done in another. Bella Baxter is the image of an intelligence capable of surfing the wave of change, finding a dangerous and adrenaline-filled balance balanced on the crest of her, without ever being overwhelmed by it. Bella Baxter is the simple question that no one has yet had the courage to ask because the answer requires a change of perspective.
Bella Baxter is 'a woman who charts her own course towards freedom' and does not do so with the awareness of being a woman but of a human being, far surpassing, with highly refined intelligence and a notable breadth of vision, the abused and now sterile. Bella Baxter is elusive and untaggable. Bella Baxter is the logic of reason that marries the panache of imagination, she is the knowledge of the rules that is needed to break them, she is the colorful drawing outside the lines. Bella Baxter is a superlative Emma Stone and Lanthimos' 'poor creatures' are anything but poor.

Continuing with the titanic task of seeing all the works nominated for the Oscar for best film, "Poor things" by Yorgos Lanthimos was the most recent film that I gave a chance.

And despite the fact that it is much less easy to digest than its competition (Especially if we compare it with something like The Holdovers or Oppenheimer herself) it is undeniable that we are facing a brilliant film, which takes an intrinsically irreverent premise and uses it as a engine to quickly develop very complex topics such as sexuality, power, self-discovery and female empowerment.
In this way, Poor Things focuses on the character of Bella Baxter (Played by Emma Stone), a girl who was resurrected after a tragic accident and who does not seem to remember anything about her "past life."
Although Bella starts out having the mental age of a newborn, it is evident that she is maturing at an excessive speed, which is why her desire to know the real world grows every time.
Although selling Poor Things as a deconstruction of the old story of the Frankenstein monster may sound too simplistic, it is impossible not to find a large number of substantial connections between both stories, something that also seems to be enhanced by the aesthetics of several very specific moments in the film. .
However, the true value of the story lies in Bella's exploration process, which, through Emma Stone's brilliant performance, perfectly portrays the evolution of a character who is having her first contact with everything that makes her our life be our life: Food, music, sex, violence, etc...
It should be noted that Poor Things is a story that exists in a world that simultaneously mimics ours, but at the same time is tainted by multiple surrealist elements, not only in its scientific rules, but in the retrofuturist aesthetics that make it difficult to place the events at some specific time.
All of this starts out quite disconcerting, but little by little it immerses us in its universe.
Does this mean that Poor Things is a perfect movie? Of course not, I personally found her passing a bit uneven and there were very specific aspects of Bella's mindset that I would have preferred to be addressed slightly differently.
Apart from this, it is a solid and brave film that deserves all the praise it has received, both in its brilliant performances, its script, cinematography, etc.
Score taken from my letterboxd account.

Hi, today I come to talk about a movie that has made quite a noise these last few days, so I decided to go to the cinema to see it and draw my own conclusions, highlighting the strong and not so strong points of it, so for this reason is that today I want to talk about Poor Things.
Poor Things is a dark comedy, science fiction and fantasy film released in 2023, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and starring Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe, Ramy Youssef, Jerrod Carmichael and Christopher Abbott. This film shows us Bella Baxter, a young woman who has a child brain due to a strange experiment, however we will see how her way of thinking is growing rapidly and how this discrepancy between her body and her mind leads her to have different problems, from which only she can get out. poor things is based on a novel of the same name written by Alasdair Gray which was published in 1992. Having given a bit of context, let's get started!

First I always like to start talking about what I love most about the film and without a doubt is the aesthetics and the direction itself, I think it manages to represent a fantasy world quite original, besides this film has beautiful shots and camera movements that add a lot in certain scenes, from the first minutes you can see how differentiating the direction is and that for me is an automatic plus.
Another remarkable aspect is the performance of the great Emma stone, and is that in itself the cast of the film is very good and all do an excellent job, but the one that stands out is Emma stone, not only for how well she does, but also for the complexity and layers that has the character of Bella Baxter, as this character goes through childhood, adolescence and adulthood in the same film, plus the small details should be emphasized for us as viewers to locate in what stage of development of the protagonist we are. So there is no doubt that bringing this complex character to life has its merit.

As for the story itself I find it hard to see it as a linear story that goes from point A and point B, because if we see it that way it is super simple, in fact what makes this film remarkable is to accompany the character of Bella and see how she changes her way of thinking as her experiences and experiences, that is the real magic of the film.
The soundtrack of the film is quite disturbing and I love it, it adds a lot to that experience of "discomfort" that sometimes the film manages to convey and fascinates me, I sincerely feel that they manage to take advantage of the auditory aspect to give more textures to the scenes, no doubt the experience would be totally different without that soundtrack so characteristic, so for me it is another positive point.

I'm not going to lie, I am very clear that it is not a very digestible movie, at times it can be slow and has a duration of 2 hours 20 minutes, so I understand why some people can get bored, and I feel it is understandable, because also at times the magic of many scenes is how subjective they can be and how you interpret them, However, when you pay attention to details such as direction and dialogues, we find the true value of this film, besides the message seems to me quite valuable because everyone can give their own interpretation and adapt it for themselves.
Honestly I went to the movies with very high expectations and I was not disappointed, I was also very clear about the movie I was going to see, so I was somewhat prepared, but I feel that poor things is a movie worth seeing, it has many remarkable things and if you like this kind of movies a little more "experimental" sure you will enjoy it.

In conclusion an excellent film but certainly not for all audiences, because as I said it is a film that at times can be slow and dense, but all this is offset by many other good aspects that make the overall experience is quite good, so for my part ... totally recommended!

I would like to know if you have seen this movie and if so, what is your opinion about it?

It has 11 nominations for the next Oscars Tiene 11 nominaciones a los próximos premios Oscar
The film that has the most nominations for the next Academy Awards is the already iconic Oppenheimer, which will compete in 13 categories, closely followed by another film that has the not inconsiderable number of 11 nominations: Poor Things by Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos, which is currently in theaters and I finally got to see it last night.
The first thing I have to say is that Poor Things was not what I expected. In the first instance, I must clarify that I never saw a promotional trailer for the film, other than some clips of a few seconds and that I got an idea through the comments of a couple of people who I now think had not seen the film. You may have heard that this story that mixes fantasy, drama, comedy and science fiction is a retelling of Frankenstein, but stopping there is making a poor judgment because, although there are evident (and few) similarities, Poor Things in reality is much more. The script, written by Tony McNamara, is based on the 1992 novel of the same name by writer Alasdair Gray, which in addition to what has been said above also incorporates elements of magical realism and eroticism. A lot of eroticism. And this is the part I didn't expect to see. I don't usually create many expectations before watching a movie, but in this case some references conditioned my mind about what I would see and I didn't expect to see so many graphic sex scenes. It's not a criticism. In fact, in the context of the plot, I understand the high sexual content, but I warn those who have not seen it. Poor Things is the adventure of a wonderful protagonist who discovers the world, with its pleasures and horrors, amidst landscapes and characters that seem to come out of a psychedelic dream.

I don't want to give much away about the story itself, because a good part of the charm of the script is due to the revelations that are presented and certain twists in the plot, but to begin with I can say that the protagonist of this entire adventure is Bella Baxter (Emma Stone), a woman who was brought to life by Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe) and here would be that similarity with Mary Shelley's mythical creature and her Dr. Frankenstein, but the story is more complex than that.
Dr. Godwin is the son of another doctor who, like him, always put science and progress above everything else, including the well-being of his experimental subjects. The scars that accompany his face, his hands and some of his other ailments were the result of the experiments that his own father did on him, but Godwin does not seem to resent him for that, because he understands that he did it in the name of science. That's where the reason for Baxter's also twisted mind comes from, whose mansion is surrounded by the most unusual animals one could see: a chog (part chicken, part dog), a chicken with a pig's head, a dog with a duck's neck and head... and Bella, whom he treats with a paternal feeling. But is Bella his daughter? No, and did he build it from the pieces of human corpses like in Shelley's novel? Not quite. The truth is that at the beginning of the film Bella presents the appearance of a woman, but the mentality of a little girl and as the film progresses she discovers not only the world but also her own body and what is even more important: her identity. I am not referring to her name or her origin, but to who she herself is. There is a part, especially in the second half of the film, in which Bella's philosophical questions did remind me of Dr. Frankenstein's creature which, by the way, is far from being the green and terrifying monster that the cinema sold us for many years.
No exactamente.

The production design is spectacular, a mix of colorful dream, futuristic antiquity and Victorian England, as is the costumes and makeup. The editing is very good, the photography exquisite and recursive (color, black and white, fisheye), the soundtrack is perfect for the story that also has a great script full of comedy, excellently directed by Lanthimos and incredible performances, especially that of Emma Stone, who here demonstrates her acting ability, taking herself physically and emotionally to territories that were unsuspected for me when I saw her in Easy A, La La Land or in The Favorite itself, her first collaboration with the Greek director. She was already one of my favorite actresses and one of the best of her generation, but what she does in Poor Things deserves a standing ovation. The feeling I have is that this film may shock many and may even be controversial and uncomfortable in some aspects. There will be no shortage of people who talk about topics that have been included in a forced way; If you criticized the feminist overtones in a film like Barbie, imagine finding female sexuality, patriarchy, sexual identity, hedonism, prostitution, in a film in which most of the male characters are somewhat ridiculed (in the good sense). Yes, there will be those who complain, there will be those who will be scandalized and there will be those who will not enjoy this film. What's more, there will be more than one who will say that it is a bad movie, just because it challenges convention and explores territories that are outside the margins of the normal.

But Yorgos Lanthimos is not normal. If in The Lobster and The Killing of a Sacred Deer we were given the impression that there were normal characters who were pushed by the environment or circumstances in a strange direction, what can we expect from a Victorian drama that begins with the laboratory of a disfigured doctor who mixes animals and performs brain transplants? More than the two mentioned, Poor Things (winner in Venice) is related to Dogooth, which earned Lanthimos an award at the Cannes Festival, for that bubble in which the father kept the children, which is kind of what Dr. Baxter tries with Bella at the beginning, only our heroine manages to get out, see the world and observe humanity. Bella's innocence, an unprejudiced soul who at first confuses many things - not because of her inability but because the world sometimes doesn't make sense - makes her want to improve the world, but is it possible? Are human beings, by nature, cruel or kind? Can people own other people? How are the uncontrollable desires of the body and mind reconciled with the norms dictated by society? What link is there between love, possession and pleasure? Should we defend our freedom of expression at all costs and at all times or should we save appearances in some cases? A film that makes you reflect on these issues - and many more - cannot be taken lightly and is destined to be visited more than once, but always with a wide open mind, who of you has seen it? I read you in the comments.

Unable to afford the rest of the trip, the two are kicked off the ship at Marseille, after which they make their way to pairs.
Having run out of funds, Bella begins working at a brothel, further enraging Duncan and resulting in his mental breakdown, finally leading her to abandon him.
At the brothel, she comes under the tutelage of Madame Swiney and befriends fellow prostitute Toinette, with whom she begins a relationship and who introduces her to socialism.
A terminally ill Godwin asks Max to bring Bella to him.
Max locates her after tracking down Duncan, who has been institutionalized after his breakdown.
Returning to London, Bella reconciles with Godwin and renews her plans to marry Max.
The two are interrupted by Duncan and General Alfie Blessing ton on their wedding day.
Alfie, addressing Bella as Victoria, reveals that they were married before her disappearance and that he has come to reclaim her.
She abandons Max to learn of her past life but quickly discovers Alfie's violent and sadistic nature, and realizes that she had committed suicide to escape their abusive relationship.
Find out what happened next as she realizes that she had committed suicide to escape their abusive relationship as the movie gets interesting.
Thanks for reading my post.
Just wanted to share my thoughts on "Poor Things," the captivating film that secured a well-deserved Golden Globe yesterday. Directed by the talented Yorgos Lanthimos, it's a cinematic journey that took me by surprise, especially as someone who wasn't always a fan of his work.
First things first – major kudos to the incredible cast, led by the ever-charming Emma Stone. Her performance as Bella was an absolute breath of fresh air, stealing the spotlight in every scene. And can we talk about that unforgettable soundtrack featuring cellos and strings?
Now, let's tackle the big question: Is "Poor Things" a feminist film? While directed by a straight man, Lanthimos, the movie boldly engages with feminist themes. It dives headfirst into deconstructing societal norms, tackling issues like female sexual liberation, the decriminalization of the female body, and challenging gender roles.
But, of course, there's a critical eye on the male gaze. It's evident in the sex scenes and the construction of Bella's world, crafted by the male characters – God, Duncan, and Harry. Bella's journey toward freedom from these influences is there, but the traces of a world shaped by men linger.
Ultimately, does it matter if "Poor Things" is officially labeled a feminist film? Not really. The film achieves its goals splendidly, sparking conversations about societal norms and the intricacies of gender dynamics.
And let's not forget the real showstopper – Emma Stone! Is there any creature more captivating than her? The answer is a resounding NO.
In conclusion, "Poor Things" isn't just a Golden Globe winner.it's a thought-provoking, visually stunning experience that deserves a spot on your must-watch list. Yorgos Lanthimos is also Greek so that also plays it's role. hahaha
