Power Rangers is one of those franchises that - Like others like the Simpsons - suffer considerably over time, this has not so much to do with quality (at least not only) but rather with the ways in which perception that their viewers have of her varies with the passing of the years.

Mighty Morphing Power Rangers has a couple of decades on, started in 1993 as a kind of adaptation to Super Sentai (Getting to take fragments of it for its action scenes) and continues to this day ...

This means that for those of older age talking about Power Rangers is talking about 90s nostalgia, with all the camp and the kitsch that goes with it… while for the younger ones it is a silly but effective action franchise that is still relevant.

This dichotomy of perceptions is not only substantial but also aesthetic and is one of the most conflictive aspects of the 2017 reboot simply called: Power Rangers, which does not know who to turn to.

Starring a young and quite appropriate cast: Naomi Scott, RJ Cyler, Becky G, Ludi Lin and Dacre Montgomery (Well known from Stranger Things), as well as a couple of “grown up” actors: Bryan Cranston, Bill Hader and Elizabeth Banks. Power Rangers is a film that seeks to add depth that is sometimes unnecessary to a franchise that should accept its own ridiculous nature.

Although the film is titled "Power Rangers" take that with a grai of salt, since it is structured more like a prequel where we see the formation of the group and the obtaining of their "armor" and not the group in action for a long time.

This, although it has good intentions and a couple of worthy moments (The group is well assembled and most of their personalities are at least interesting) ends up feeling extremely boring and the satisfactory parts arrive very late, when the victory of the good team is imminent. .

The nods to the original series are great, and some are so subtle that they will only be recognized by those who lived through it at the time, but sometimes it seems that the film itself feels ashamed of its origins and tries to become edgy to satisfy other markets "More demanding".

From the technical point of view it is quite good, the effects comply and although I do not love the Rangers' design (when they deign to appear) they are quite good, the soundtrack delivers and everything is generally heard and heard well.

It's nothing to write home about and although that's fine I feel like it could have been so much more. A shame.

    REVIEW

This is not the first time Power Rangers has appeared on a bigger screen of television, attempting to make a movie version twice, first of all Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie and Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie released about two decades ago. But for the size of the big screen movie, both can be said to look like one of the commotion of the TV series with a longer duration. So of course when the latest Power Rangers project was announced in 2014 with a more serious tone and a bigger budget, it certainly became good news for the fans who had been waiting for Power Rangers to get the more feasible treatment to appear on the big screen of their efforts. The previous disappointing attempt.

Carried out by Dean Israelite, the director who once invited us on an exciting journey adventure in 2015 and in Project Almanac, his Power Rangers version attempted a more refreshing and more contemporary approach. Starting everything from scratch means both veteran and new audiences will be introduced to the new Power Rangers world. Starting with a flash back that gives the basics of everything, we are then introduced to five selected Angel Grove youths, the red ranger; Jason Scott (Dacre Montgomery), pink ranger; Kimberly Hart (Naomi Scott), Billy Cranston (RJ Cyler) the blue ranger, black ranger; Zack (Ludi Lin) and yellow ranger; Trini (Becky G). All five gain alien power from Zordon (Bryan Cranston) to prevent the evil Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks) destroy the world.

New worlds, new characters, new costumes, a new Megazord and a new Rita Repulsa,Dean Power Rangers truly fulfill their promise of massive renewal to suit the digital generation and of course grab the attention of its new audience. But whatever the Power Rangers upgrade, it still feels as cheap and superficial, just like its predecessors, no matter how expensive the expensive visual effects are, there's really nothing "wow" that can make you remember this version, Except perhaps the costume of Rita Repulsa which is like making Elizabeth Banks hard to move.

If Dean's goal is to make his Power Rangers version to keep his campy and cheesy tone deliberately, yes, he did well, but he forgot that his veteran audience is no longer a child who still prance jingle when hearing the jingle "Go Go Power Rangers "reverberate, they are now adults, including looking at the world that is no longer black and white. Indeed, I see Dean's efforts to bring nostalgia with several approaches, including one of the best moments involving the legendary jingle (which is dear only a flick), bringing back Zordon and his loyal servant Alpha 5 (who was voiced by Bill Hader) or the cameo of the cast But you do not make this new Power Rangers just to remember the past, there is a new audience that must be impressed, there must be a solid foundation to be able to shape the future of this franchise in the future and it is arguably failed to be maximized Dean.

Yes, trying to wrap it up with darker tones with more mature details covering LGBT themes, race and autism, yet ultimately it is nothing more than a sweetener for a half-baked narrative, whereas honestly screenplay John Gatins has The potential to be able to grow further and deeper, let's say the introduction of each character. Dean is seen trying to describe the problematic of each character, unfortunately in the end only Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott and RJ Cyler who only get a decent portion while Becky G and Ludi Lin no more just a complementary member whose character feels flat, unattractive and boring, as boring as The first 3/4 of the movie is staggering before closing with a spectacular ending. Especially for Rj Cyler, his charismatic Billy character must be recognized to be the center of greatest attention here. Diplot as an autism and anti-social racial minority, happy to see his character develop throughout the film complete with all the humor and action.

The plot is messy, unbalanced characterization, weak narrative and unified Megazord's melding moments are less of a distraction than the performance of Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa. Being one of the most demanding parts, Rita Repulsa's character will probably look more frightening than her television version only if she's silent, but it's hard not to frown and even laugh when she's in action. Strict green costumes that make Banks like constipation behind its over-the-top appearance make Rita Repulsa the Banks version a disaster, the biggest stupidity you find in newer versions of Power Rangers.

    RATING (5/10)

  3. Insomniac Film Festival #27: Power Rangers (2017)@rvgenaille3247d

    image -via IMDb.com

When I decided yesterday to watch The Monster Squad instead of my planned viewing of Power Rangers, I delegated that task to my brother, @andrewgenaille, who gamely decided to take on the challenge. When I checked in with him later, he was finishing an episode of Key and Peele and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend was starting. He gave me a quote for the movie review but it contained a spoiler so I didn't include it here. Essentially he couldn't finish the movie. He turned it off.

I, of course, took that as a challenge. I had sat through Battlefield Earth and Independence Day: Resurgence and revelled in their awfulness. So I would take on the Power Rangers and I would endure with good-natured enjoyment and interest to the world being created here.

I've never seen any of the previous incarnations of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers beyond clips on Youtube's Cinema Sins and some scenes at friends' houses when I was just passing through. It looked cheesy and sounded cheesy. I didn't have a desire for cheese. This reboot was a long time in the making I am told and, truthfully, I had no desire to see it but I make these sacrifices for you, dear fellow Steemians.

Elizabeth Banks is in this. So is Bryan Cranston. There were also a bunch of young people playing teenagers who would become the Power Rangers in question. They are all outcasts and they gain super powers and must save the world from Elizabeth Banks, who's great in the Pitch Perfect movies. They are helped by the disembodied head of Bryan Cranston, whom I'm told was great in the Breaking Bad series. The guy that plays the dad of the main character is someone I've seen before too but I couldn't place him. He played jerks in whatever else I saw him in, much like he does here but I really didn't care enough to look him up.

The movie is an origin story for the Power Rangers as they are tasked with defeating Rita Repulsa and stopping her from destroying the earth. The effects are pretty good and Banks as Rita seems like she is having a lot of fun but the movie just doesn't really work. It is a straight forward story and plot but it feels tired, believe it or not. Plus, when the main characters morphed, it just seemed really cheesy.

I got through it though, that's got to count for something.
