Hello, cinema fans. Today I want to talk to you about one of the best action, suspense, and dystopian science fiction films I've ever seen. A story of love, hate, betrayal, and revenge that goes beyond entertainment to give us a clear and profound message that is not suitable for all audiences. Based on the graphic novel of the limited series of the same name by Alan Moore, David Lloyd, and Tomy Weare for DC Vertigo Comics, this film adaptation is directed by James McTeigue with a screenplay by the Wachowski brothers (the same creators of The Matrix franchise). Discover one of the best DC movies ever made.

The film begins by showing us the ancient Gunpowder Plot, with Guy Fawkes being caught and subsequently hanged in the 1600s. It then transports us to the near future, with England being subjugated by a totalitarian and fascist government led by Chancellor Adam Sutler. In sequence, we see two characters getting dressed and preparing to go out while listening to a daily broadcast of "the face of England" talking about "undesirables" such as the US government, immigrants, and homosexuals. Going out in the middle of the night during a curfew, a girl named Evey Hammond is stopped by British police officers on a street with other intentions.
When she calls for help, a man dressed in black, wearing a cape and a Guy Fawkes mask, appears. He takes down the abusive police officers and saves the girl, introducing himself dramatically with a more formal and polite manner of speaking than usual. The masked man invites Evey to see his "symphony orchestra" perform that night. She agrees, and that same night he takes her to a high place to listen to a recital being played throughout the street via speakers at every intersection and avenue. Finally, we see the Old Bailey destroyed by a huge explosion that ends with fireworks forming the letter V in the sky. This is how our masked activist, hero, and number one enemy of this government makes himself known.

Watching this film many years later fills me with both nostalgia and fascination, as I have discovered many of the reasons why it is so well known today, 20 years after its release. When I was just a child or even a teenager, I saw this film as just another action-drama that was shown from time to time on television. Now, I realize that it is much more than just a film adaptation of a DC adult comic book. You could even say that it is a symbol, a huge reference, and a message—all at once—to today's society, once you give it a chance. However, I'm not very good at talking about political and social messages, so I'll just give my opinion.
We can say that this is one of the most famous and influential masked character films in the world of cinema and popular culture today. This can be seen in the simple fact that the use of the Guy Fawkes mask has become quite popular since then. And it's no wonder when you watch the first 10 minutes of the film, which I described above. It is definitely one of the best introductions you can find for a character as enigmatic as V. An anarchist seeking revenge, leaving a clear message of freedom and hope to society while facing a powerful and extremist enemy. In short, that's what this film is about, but there's more, as you could even get a love story out of it. It all depends on how you look at this film.

I admit that I am a fan of superheroes, especially their movies. DC is a bit of a special case for me, and it's no lie that it has some priceless gems. In this case, it's not the story of a hero, but rather a character who represents a hopeful idea in a dystopian world that is very, very similar to what we see in the real world. Speaking of dystopian worlds, we already know that this subgenre of science fiction is very popular because it has a huge variety of stories with chaotic futures of all kinds. So far, we have talked about many of these films, but none resemble a racist, conservative, and extremist dystopia like the one we see in V for Vendetta. And I said that it is very similar to the real world since it is a fact that governments with these characteristics existed (and continue to exist) today. But of course, we are not here to talk about politics.
We are here to talk about how excellently crafted the story told in this film is. From beginning to end, we can see how each character relates to everything that is happening, revealing a variety of versions of the same story that ends with an explosive message of freedom, hope, and security. It all sounds very political, and to a large extent it is, which personally detracts from it a little. And it's not surprising, since it has so many elements, so many references and so many messages and hints about governments and dictatorships of the past and present that it is difficult to avoid or ignore completely. The way in which each terrorist act is carried out by our masked activist, the decisions and actions of the high-ranking members of this regime, and the different ways of thinking of the characters in this film remind us again and again that what we are seeing is a war of ideals.

At first, what caught my attention most about this film was none other than its main character, V. This masked antagonist and vigilante who seeks to liberate an England plunged into dictatorship was, for me, a kind of superhero with a very good vocabulary and excellent taste in literature and classical music. Not to mention his style and his skills in fighting and slaying his enemies. His story, or at least the story we are shown in the film, is one of the best I've ever seen, to be honest. It's one of those character developments that are worth getting to know. From then on, I only saw him as a superhuman, something like Steve Rogers (Captain America) or Wade Wilson (Deadpool). Even before I knew these two Marvel characters, I found it incredible how they show us V's origin as an experimental case of a super soldier.
One of the things I would like to mention about this movie is the striking resemblance between this totalitarian and fascist government and that of Nazi Germany during World War II. Both Chancellor Adam Sutler and the issue of human experimentation and the way this country is governed are clear examples of this. I suppose it's no coincidence, as it wouldn't be the first time that a film of this kind has been inspired by one of the darkest periods in human history to create a dystopian future as realistic as the one we see here. And if we look more closely, we can see many other signs and references to today's society, some forms of government, and even religion itself, with the scene of the pope with Evey, for example. There is even a mention of a pandemic, something that now resonates quite strongly for obvious reasons.

Apart from its political, social, and religious criticism, this film also conveys many messages related to freedom and hope. Starting with the character of V, an enigmatic masked man who loves literature, music, cinema, and art. These are practically everything that a totalitarian government seeks to eliminate from its people: forms of expression and freedom. On the other hand, V is also a passionate anarchist who is quite patient with his elaborate acts of terrorism, leaving no trace behind. The same goes for the murders he commits, using violence only when he is in trouble or seeks to "take justice" into his own hands. This would be the other side of the coin of a subjugated society that, in trying to stay afloat, opts for chaos and violence to try to get ahead.
V is the perfect representation of the consequences of all the evil that this government has done at the hands of the cruel Chancellor Adam Sutler. For his part, this fascist and extremist ruler is the face of a traumatic past, an evil that no one in this life or any other would wish to suffer. His manner, actions, and speech reveal how ruthless, cruel, powerful, and yet fragile he is. His weakness is believing that none of those who work for him would betray him, someone who has done the unimaginable with his mandates and ideals while creating a world without freedom, dreams, or hope. Those who see him on the huge screen on which he always appears wear a false face that hides all the resentment, hatred, and contempt they feel for him. That is why the ending of this film is one of the best I have ever seen, as it closes everything in such an ironic, surreal, and yet credible way that the action scenes and final explosions only embellish what has already been done.

Another main character worth mentioning is Evey Hammond, who we initially see as just another person, a victim of this oppressive and extremist regime. She represents the fear, doubt, and mistrust that anyone might feel when living in a world like this. However, throughout the film, we see how she changes, going from being a simple, fearful woman to becoming someone so confident that she is unrecognizable. Of course, here I must mention a detail of the film that I did not like very much and that is related to this character. Those who have seen and remember this film will know what part I am referring to and that I consider it to be quite extreme and exaggerated, personally. However, be that as it may, what happened after that is simply one of the most emotional and impressive turning points I have ever seen in a film in my entire life.
This is something that this film also has, apart from the many references and social and political messages. And that is the way it masterfully and unprecedentedly blends drama with suspense. Just mentioning the rain scene (for those who know it) will make you recognize that this is undoubtedly the case. Of course, beyond being something audiovisual, it is the way it builds this story and adds elements in a way that does not seem forced or unnecessary. Take humor, for example, which is only seen in one scene as a direct mockery of Chancellor Adam Sutler's government. Another example would be the issue of homosexuals with the case of the girl who was imprisoned in one of those government "reform centers". The latter is even a story within a story that serves as the driving force behind everything that happens in this film.

This is how you build a story, this is how you adapt a comic book, a graphic novel, or whatever. It's because of movies like this that I consider the 2000s to be the best years of cinema, especially for giants like DC. The success this movie had at the time, the fact that it is considered a cult classic and a major reference point in today's popular culture, is proof of that. Personally, it's a surprise for me to recognize all this I've just written about a movie that, several years ago, I thought was just another action flick. As I said before, this movie can also be considered a love story. Especially with the way Evey's relationship with V evolves throughout the two-hour feature film into something beyond pure revenge and hatred.
Last but not least, let's talk about the audiovisual aspects of this film. It is worth mentioning that the production was handled by the same people who made The Matrix at the time. However, beyond seeing an exaggerated use of CGI and other visual effects, we notice that it has an excellent amount of practical effects and a cinematic quality that was quite excellent for its time. The style of photography, the shots, the use of light and shadow, the makeup, and the palette of cool, gray colors are particularly striking. The action sequences are also excellent, especially when they use the classic slow-motion style. The sound effects are well done too, but what stands out most about this film is undoubtedly its soundtrack. The music used throughout most of the film is fascinating, especially if you are a fan of classical music. In short, this is a film that I recommend watching only if you like revolutionary messages dressed up in action and suspense.
Personally, I give it a rating of 9/10 in terms of the science fiction, suspense, and action genres.

At the start of the 21st century, there was a variety of opinion on Hollywood's ability to effectively transfer high-quality comic books to the big screen. There was, however, much less dispute when it came to the comic books based on the works of esteemed British author Alan Moore. To say that most adaptations of his celebrated graphic novels have been rejected by both film critics and comic book enthusiasts would be an understatement. Then, everything changed after the premiere of the 2005 film V for Vendetta, a science fiction action film which garnered much more approval and, in many cases, great enthusiasm not only among film critics, but also from social and political commentators who often regard it as not only the best adaptation of Moore's work, but also one of the most influential and iconic films of our time.
The plot of the film is set in the near future, years after the terrorist attacks using biological weapons led to all civil liberties in the United Kingdom being gradually abolished, and a new totalitarian regime under Chancellor Sutler (played by John Hurt) established. The protagonist is Evey Hammond (played by Natalie Portman), an employee of the state-run British Television Network, whose parents, left-wing dissidents, were imprisoned and executed by the regime. Evey has a personal motive to assist the mysterious masked avenger known as "V" (played by Hugo Weaving), who announces a year-long terrorist campaign aimed at overthrowing the regime with a brazen assault on the TV station. The task of finding V and Evey is entrusted to the melancholic police inspector Finch (played by Stephen Rea), who will uncover many unpleasant details about the regime he serves during the investigation.
Much of the film's success among the bien pensants came from the way the filmmakers made parallels between George W. Bush's Global War and Sutler's fascist regime so obvious. Many details in the film show a dark totalitarian world as a natural continuation of everything that began on 11th September 2001, and some plot details draw inspiration from some of the 9/11 Truther conspiracy theories.
The success of the film was also aided by the involvement of the Wachowskis – creators of The Matrix, a film that demonstrated how pseudo-intellectual snobbery can be sold to the masses in a "cool" action package. Director James McTeigue, taking their approach as inspiration, made the film palatable and visually attractive, and the set of high-quality British actors, aided by Natalie Portman who, in one of the more successful roles of her career, made decent work with a British accent. Many who watch the film would probably agree with the critics who praised this film.
But that won't happen if they happened to have read Moore's graphic novel beforehand. In that case, it becomes quite clear why Moore, like with so many previous instances, renounced the film adaptation of his work and seized every opportunity to criticise it as another exploitation of comic books by Hollywood hypocrites. Comparisons between Moore's work and the film clearly indicate that the "mature" and "uncompromising" filmmakers approached the original material in a manner identical to Sutler's censors.
Moore's graphic novel dealt mainly with the conflict between two extremes – totalitarianism, which offers people security at the expense of freedom, and anarchy, which offers freedom at the expense of security – and presented readers with a series of complex and morally ambiguous characters to draw their own conclusions. The Wachowskis and McTeigue, on the other hand, played it safe, opting for the "golden mean" not much different from the Third Way, a radically centrist option championed by Bill Clinton and Tony Blair. In this film, the emergence of future totalitarianism is not interpreted as a direct consequence of the structural weaknesses of modern liberal democracy, but rather as the result of a series of unfortunate events and the work of a handful of rogue elements who can, at the end of the day, be removed from power quickly, easily, and painlessly, allowing the world to again fall in love with globalisation and unchecked US and Western hegemony.
V for Vendetta, therefore, shouldn't be interpreted as a parable about the mid-2000s or a warning of a dark future, but rather as an expression of nostalgia longing for a better past, or a vision of a world that has become difficult to imagine since George W. Bush replaced Clinton in the White House. One could say that this film was made at least a decade too late, belonging instead to the 1990s, when Hollywood and the White House played the same tune, and England – embodied in grey-haired, conservative snobs – was the perennial villain and source of all evil in the world. Such a vision was much harder to reconcile with multicultural and "politically correct" Blair's "cool Britannia", just as it was difficult to accept the similarities between the world of V for Vendetta and Orwell's dystopia from the novel and film version of 1984.
The futility of envisioning the future based on the past can also be seen in Moore's novel, which emerged in the early 1980s as an expression of frustration over Margaret Thatcher's rise to power and fear of what her right-wing regime would do to traditional British freedoms. In the end, as in many previous cases, it turned out that the real danger didn't come from where everyone expected it. What happened in the 2000s with laws attacking freedom of expression, widespread video surveillance, wars, and the manipulation of citizens' fears, hadn't been brought by the dour conservative Iron Lady, but by her smiling and "cool" Labour successor.
And the lessons haven't been learned by those who actually watched the film. Many of the young people who had enthusiastically embraced the film's alleged anti-establishment message and started wearing V's Guy Fawkes masks as symbols of protest appeared to miss or forget the film's point as adults, finding all kinds of excuses to support lockdowns, forever wars, social media censorship and everything V for Vendetta had been against.

Hello friends, today I bring for you a wonderful film that makes us reflect on many things that have happened, are still happening today and unfortunately will continue to happen in humanity, if it does not open its eyes and react to the injustices and attempted manipulation of information. Sometimes we focus too much on ourselves and do not care about others, that is where the evil ones take advantage to carry out their plans of coercion, but now without further ado let's start with the review 😉.
The film tells the story of a mysterious, masked vigilante who apparently comes out of nowhere to fight against the excesses of a far-right authoritarian government, which was established in the UK as a result of a pandemic that they themselves created to cause terror in the population, and later offered the cure to make themselves look like heroes to society. This man, known as V, begins with a series of terrorist attacks in specific points in London, and the government (scared) takes advantage of this to use it as a campaign in its favour, pretending to make V look like a common criminal, but in reality V only wants to return to normality to a country that has lived in fear since this fascist government took power, They act just as the Nazis did, silencing people who opposed their regime by murdering them or torturing them in concentration camps, but worst of all were the medical experiments they carried out on prisoners to create the virus that unleashed the pandemic that eventually brought them to power.

After rescuing a girl named Evey from criminals, V wants her to help him in his plan to destabilise the government, but she is terrified, having lost her parents who were activists who opposed the government, both of whom were imprisoned and later killed when she was just a child, but V, in an unorthodox way, made her discover her own inner strength, and moreover, with her actions she managed to sow the seed of revolution throughout the country, unmasking fascism, making her idea multiply and people stop being afraid of it.
This film automatically took me back to the times of the so-called Third Rich when Hitler ruled Germany, while Mussolini and Franco were in power in Italy and Spain respectively, but in reality authoritarianism has always existed, since before Christ even, and there have always been vigilantes who in one way or another, An example of this is Simón Bolívar who is the liberator of no more and no less than 5 nations, and all this stems from the most important reflection that the film offers us: "The people should not fear their governments, it is the governments that should fear the people".
The government presented in the film acts like all fascists, spreading fear, deceiving the people into believing that they are not in control, that they are weak and insignificant, but in reality they do this because they are afraid that they will wake up and discover their true strength, when a people discover what they are made of there is nothing that can stop them and V knows this very well, for that reason he begins to act to expose the government, his attacks are accurate and very well planned, he does not act lightly, in fact the message he gave through television was decisive to begin to reach the hearts of the citizens: "Last night I destroyed the courthouse to remind this country of what it has forgotten and also to remind them that courage, justice and freedom are not just words, they are perspectives".

I like many aspects of this film, first of all, the story of course, but I love the way they built the characters and their evolution, for example, although V wears a mask and this prevents us from seeing his facial expressions, we can perfectly perceive his emotions, despite being a hero, he makes it very clear that he is a human being who also feels fear, anger, pain and resentment, in fact he is motivated by revenge, but he is also motivated by the fact that he wants this society to discover its own strength. I think Hugo Weaving gave a lot of feeling to his character, I like the panache with which he moves, and the elegance of his dialogue.

Evey for her part I think was the one who evolved the most, after being tortured she discovered that her will became stronger, she refused to talk about V, little by little she lost her fear and therefore she took control of herself, ceasing to be a human being to become an idea.

I also like the symbolism of the film, V uses this name as that was his cell number when he was a prisoner in a concentration camp, V for 5 in Roman numerals, another symbolism is his own mask, he wears it as a representation of an idea, because ideas have the ability to survive long after people die, and can even multiply, so it is no coincidence that the mask he wears is an illustration of the face of Guy Fawkes, an English conspirator and activist who tried to blow up the House of Lords in 1605 on 5 November in the so-called Gunpowder Plot, so Fawkes' face went down in history as a symbol of anti-system struggles and even today it has been adopted by the activist group Anonymous.

And how can we forget the scene where hundreds of people approach the English parliament dressed as V, wearing Guy Fawkes' masks, it is the confirmation that ideas do not die, they multiply and grow stronger.

Anyway, it's a film worthy of being analysed in depth, unfortunately I haven't had the pleasure of reading the comic in which the film is inspired, but surely someday I will, seriously I would love to as there is usually more content. Thank you very much for your attention and support, I hope you liked this review 😉 see you next time.

Remember, remember the 5th of November...* Probably the most famous phrase that has featured heavily in pop culture
V for Vendetta is a comic book by the excellent Alan Moor and David Loyd.Voluminous at over 260 pages, it focuses on telling a story that is not at all as unreal as it seems. 1997 Britain is ruled by a party where many things are forbidden. What is not forbidden is to be obedient to the authorities.Wiretaps and cameras on every corner so that the power can watch people and know when they are committing negligence.
A country where freedom does not exist and any sexual dissent is automatically condemned to prison. A place where news is filtered so that the public can praise the leader. In this oppressive world, we meet Evey, a young girl who, having no means of earning a living, decides to become a prostitute and ends up at the police station. Then along comes a mysterious man with a mask on his face who speaks a poem and saves her, he doesn't realize that this will be his vital factor to make the world a better place

V hides his identity under a mask, he doesn't want to give away his name or his face, V not only wants to make a revolution, but he also wants to get rid of every person who ruled the prison where he was staying, V was subjected to medical experiments and was the only one to survive them, although the effects are mental illness.Mental illness plays quite a strong role here, V wants to save Britain on the one hand, but on the other hand he shows Evey what it is like to be a prisoner in her own country by subjecting her to a series of tortures
Over the course of a year the revolution takes place, and each planned action causes society to slowly emerge from its shackles. The comic doesn't want to sugarcoat it, it goes a step further to show how the government can be cruel just to cover up inconvenient truths like pedophilia. The closer we get to the finale, the more we understand the actions of a madman who wants to be the only one to be the voice of the people, the only one to betray himself in his twisted crusade to show the country in a different light.
Evey undergoes quite a transformation of emotions over the course of a year, from sad and confused, to eager for revenge, to seeing veritable chaos all around her.V for Vendetta is a comic that takes the reader into the Chamber of Shadows and shows there, the only sane world left
1 The movie is different in many ways. The movie was created by the Wachowski duo, although they didn't direct it, they had quite an influence on the whole thing and unfortunately the biggest flaw is also the fact of giving V super powers (in the comics he only had mental illness, in the movie he has super dexterity) and not speaking in verse.
2 The ending is theoretically similar, but one important thing about Evey has been changed and the movie lacks a strong impact. There are generally fewer scenes with Evey in the movie, and they are directed differently. Evey's lover, who made her want revenge, is not in the movie.
The torture scene of Evey is much less emotional than in the comic and unfortunately the iconic V scene was also handled differently.I cling to the movie, but despite so many flaws and different scenes, it's still a great movie. If you've never read V for Vendetta, it's worth it because it's a story of the best revenge that has spread across the country. If you know the movie, it is worth getting to know the model and you will not be disappointed, even though the comic is from the 80s and you can feel the style, it is drawn in such a way that it does not throw you off.
The comic is 10/10, although towards the end it is more subdued and focuses on the emotions of the characters rather than the action, but it is the best comic on such a subject, where a mentally ill person wanting revenge for his worst days becomes a revolution for the country.
Movie 8/10 and here the ending is handled completely differently, more like a scene in a theater, although the underground scene is similar and so is everything else.
Pamietaj, pamietaj o 5 Listopadzie…
1
people should not fear their governments, governments should fear their people
Guy Fawkes, who according to some is a supporter of thought and freedom, according to others a traitor, and who is remembered with the date 5 November 1605, is related to what I am about to tell.
But I will not talk about biographies or research on his life! It is useful to leave historical facts in history, but there are those who do not do this.
[source](https://www.themoviedb.org/t/p/w220_and_h330_face/2ySXWBckQboalTZjhaLWRqc3gCN.jpg)The 2006 film V for Vendetta, directed by James McTeigue, was inspired by Guy Fawkes' attempt to blow up the British parliament building on 5 November 1605 under the name of "social freedom".
I do not want to enter into discussions about heroes, traitors, religion or the ideas that an event that has remained in the dusty pages of history can create, I just want to reflect what happened as a film and my thoughts about the film I watched.
[source](https://www.themoviedb.org/t/p/w500_and_h282_face/fv4XvbQW2NDEXV8Zdxhmv0wHuu3.jpg)Violence can be used for good to achieve justice!
This quote from the film is so assertive and creative that many who oppose all forms of violence would object to it. Although I do not agree with the quote, it is important to remember that the people are the only real power. In the film V for Vendetta you see a lot of this kind of rhetoric and actions, ideas and personal freedoms are still a defended value and are valid as long as they are not abused.
Inspired by a comic book series written by Alan Moore, the film is based on the action of Guy Fawkes in history and the ideas of the character V, played by Hugo Weaving. He tries to complete the job he could not do on 5 November.
[source](https://www.themoviedb.org/t/p/w500_and_h282_face/uF0yNBvxYeoNM85rfvLrPvIhGrp.jpg)Although the film is long, it has a gripping effect and allows you to focus on the story. Of course, I have to say that I was not on a side for some reasons during the film. Most of the time I take a side in such films and I want the side I take to be superior throughout the film.
I can say that I justify the defence of freedom of thought, life and preferences, but I am also distant from those who support anarchy and chaos, or even go further and create it. Is it really freedom that is sought? Or are there other activities under the name of freedom? The film made me question these. Nurturing the feeling of hatred is as dangerous as spreading hatred.
[source](https://www.themoviedb.org/t/p/w500_and_h282_face/qbvjkd2WlCwnVB44O7bdGAYmegI.jpg)Creating a programme under the name of national security and creating a virus by rounding up dissenters and conducting medical trials on them is the first way to instil fear. To be the only one who cures the virus is to be the sole owner of power. Fear is the most well-known form of easy management. All these are events that can create a domino effect.
What I find difficult to understand is that in a film defending ideas and personal freedoms, the people who are taken and experimented on are those who have sexual preferences in favour of both sexes. It's like a gathering of gay and lesbian people! I think this is the only negative in the film. Sexual preferences can be considered as a freedom, but I could not figure out what this has to do with freedom of opinion.
[source](https://www.themoviedb.org/t/p/w500_and_h282_face/zu6aqGoLsS7XlfUvfDWWkK88EDj.jpg)I have to say that I like the film, but I choose to remain neutral towards some scenes. If the film was not inspired by a historical reality, I could only consider it as fiction and watch it as a film, but when it is inspired by a historical reality and focuses on completing unfinished business, you measure the film with real life. When I do this, some of the scenes I mentioned above stand out in the film.

In a recent discussion about this topic, ‘Your most favourite fictional character’ – I decided to throw in a different perspective. I offered, what is character doesn’t exist? Then are they not simply constructs or vehicles for the representation of ideas.

@stickupboys @papacrusher - In this blog post, I hope to build this idea - and perhaps thank the discord room for kicking off this discussion. I feel like it's a topic worth considering, although, perhaps it corrupts the 'favourite fictional character' prompt by arguing against the premise of the prompt. Who knows? Let's find out.
From this perspective, it’s about taking a step back and recognising that films are constructed for a purpose; the various cinematic techniques become part of a manipulation to persuade you to an idea.
Take, for instance, ‘The Truman Show’ – the world of the narrative is calm, peaceful, and the eponymous Truman seems to have the perfect existence – but pull back the layers, and the film’s message is about surveillance, perhaps peppered with ideas around homogeneity in the human experience. Truman, as a character, isn’t ‘real’ in the sense that we could bump into him on the street, so in the absence of existing – he is simply a construct; an idea. Perhaps he symbolises mundanity, or naivety – perhaps something darker, our innate willingness to be controlled?
To continue in this thread, pick any Disney princess. Belle, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty – take your pick. Being cartoons, they are easier to be removed from, in the sense, while you might see Jim Carey on the street and mistake him for Truman, if you were to see a cartoon woman walking towards you – you have bigger problems than this post has time to deal with. But, like Truman, they also shine a light on the idea of control by fabricating a narrative that women should be valued on their innocence, beauty and that they can only be truly happy with a man. That man, as it turns out, chooses the woman – with the assumption that he cannot be rejected. Imagine if you were sleeping in the woods, and a strange man came up and gave you a big wet kiss? What would you do? Common sense tells us we would throw a string of expletives his way; but why do we have a niggling feeling that there is something very romantic and the daring of the act is enchanting?
Definition of ARCHETYPE: a recurring character or idea that is seen over and over again in a text. This patterned representation make them easy to identify and draw associations with or against. In a nutshell, unique characters don’t exist – they all fall under the umbrella of a particular archetype, of which, there are only 12 (depending on who you source - Jungian Psychology would say 12, other literary theorists could say 8. They're given different names or categories, but they're interchangeable).
Our mate Truman fits the ‘Hero’ archetype, while our Disney Princesses all fit the ‘Damsel in Distress’ archetype.

Yet – in each Disney princess representing the same idea, perhaps we’d notice that each story is the same too. Girl in distress, girl needs saving, man rescues girl and they live happily ever after. Kurt Vonnegut, one of my favourite literary theorists has analysed 10000s of narratives from Western cultural backgrounds, and he theorised (back in the 1970s would you believe?) that there are ONLY 8 stories that can be told. Have a look, it’s really fascinating. He calls them the ‘shape of stories’ – and the maps below should the rising and falling fortunes of characters. On Youtube, you’d find a number of clips of him speaking about this if you wanted to dive deeper:
And, for all of that, I think I’m ready to offer, not my favourite character, but my favourite idea. For the record, I’ll be drawing on the anti-hero archetype for this one!
To introduce my choice, I will let the construct speak for himself, and what an introduction:
"The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta, held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous. Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose, so let me simply add that it is my very good honor to meet you and you may call me V."
You can watch the introduction here. It's delightful from the get-go:
Already then, we can see that the character introduces himself as an idea.
Let’s go back to the theory:
Now, through the film, V's identity is shrouded in secrecy; he is nothing more than a man in a mask and a cape. This helps elucidate the premise that he is simply an idea.
The film itself was actually based on a comic, and it's purpose was to act as a protest against conservative politics. The film seeking to criticise Thatcherism in the UK, building on the Comic's criticisms of Reaganism. The film speaks about power and governance, and offers that politicians will always be corrupt, if we sit back and do nothing. The film's deliberate allusions to the Guy Fawkes Gunpowder Revolution of 1605 is central. The plot attempting to blow up Parliament and reset the political sphere.
What an observation, then, from V - who in talking with Evie, declares: People should not be afraid of their governments, governments should be afraid of their people.
This is a four second video, if you want to hear it in his own voice:
This is cemented in the film's fight scene, which would rival any Tarantino film. Having been shot multiple times, in response to asking why he cannot die, V responds: 'Ideas are bulletproof'. He transcends character and becomes a walking metaphor. A figurative concept, whose mask and cape serve not to create character, but give a physical embodiment to an abstract concept.
Have a look at the bulletproof scene here:
And, if you didn't watch those four minutes of cinematic brilliance, here's the cheat sheet:
With that in mind, let's back up - let me take you back to the opening scene where V has set significant landmarks around London to blow up. Honestly, it is one of the most powerful scenes in cinema, if not for the special effects, then it's pairing with the music:
In starting off, V quotes these powerful words: 'Remember, remember, the fifth of November. The gunpowder treason and plot. I know of no reason why the gunpowder treason should ever be forgot.'

It is then, perhaps significant that V suggests, 'We are told to remember the idea, not the man, because a man can fail. He can be caught, he can be killed and forgotten, but 400 years later, an idea can change the world.

Again, this goes to reinforcing the point of this post, that characters simply do not exist. V could be Guy Fawkes, he could be someone else - it doesn't matter, but it's the idea that we associate with him that is important. As an 'Anti-Hero' archetype, he is going to achieve an outcome, doing so through questionable actions. He blows buildings up and murders people in power - that's what we call 'questionable ethics' - however, the end justifies the mean, as he hopes to bring about revolution.
This takes me to the final scene, as 1000s of protestors, wearing dark capes, dark hats and uniform masks take to the streets. They march, not as themselves, but as a single idea and a single voice - their individuality lost, no character discernible. Can you see yourself in their shoes?
Thanks for your time, if you'd like to check out the CineTV compestition post, you can find the link here. Good luck to all in the contest; it's been awesome seeing such a wide variety of characters popping up in my feeds.

O tal vez no).

oday I want to share with you a movie that I like a lot and that I never get bored of watching, an American production of 2005 with several features that make it a great movie from my point of view, some of you surely remember it or at least it is familiar to you because of the famous mask of the protagonist. Today I want to comment on V for Vendetta.
I must say that I like movies about social and political criticism, even with a conspiratorial environment that surrounds the plot, they are movies that may perhaps shock some political fanatics, however, I think it is one of those productions that remain engraved in the retina of the viewer for many years. For me, it is a film whose mix of genres makes it attractive considering that it is an adaptation of a comic book (one of the best adaptations according to critics).
Britain has become a country with short freedoms, a totalitarianism in a dystopian future in which a masked man will try to change the political landscape methodically and outside the law, all with the aim of leading to a revolution to the British people and thus regain true freedom.
I think this is one of those must-see productions for viewers who like to be introduced to political issues, is that this production tells a phenomenal and very well executed story about how dark and sinister the path of politics can be, despite obviously being introduced in a dystopian future and science fiction it shows us acts that can be quite real in our present.
The film shows us political leaders who desire power at all costs, no matter what happens in that climb to the top, with the flag of totalitarianism to have absolute control over the people granting high economic benefits along the way (any resemblance to political reality is mere coincidence ... Or maybe not).
The film shows us that nefarious path that the leader of this futuristic Britain traveled until he sat in the chair of power, evidently avoiding all kinds of political demonstrations against him, using excessive force against those political activists and eliminating the people with the information about those mysterious and dark events hidden by the government.
The film shows us V, the protagonist is a hero or anti-hero, depending on the viewer's perspective, a man who has survived the hidden atrocities of the government and now wishes to confront it in order to free the British people from a corrupt system, even if he has to hide in the shadows and perform acts outside the law that can even be classified as terrorism.
We observe very marked characteristics of this protagonist, one of them is a great handling of cutting weapons such as swords and knives, in addition, he has a superhuman resistance that allows him in a scene to receive numerous bullet impacts and continue fighting despite the wounds, however, these are not the characteristics that most attract the attention of this great character.
What really makes this character stand out is his eloquence and his use of words to express and at the same time convince others, every time the film introduces us to V's conversations we can be both amazed and bewildered by his way of communicating, perhaps we have to repeat the scenes several times to understand everything that is being said. Apart from being a completely unintelligible script, the way in which it develops and the mysteries are discovered through images and above all speeches makes it a film that stands out from the rest.
For me, he is one of those unforgettable characters, formidable battle qualities like that of a superhero, however, it was not his true superpower, intelligence and the power of the word are his true strengths. A mysterious hero who fights for what he thinks is right even though he may be labeled a terrorist or a criminal, the true consequence of fighting against a corrupt system.
I love the character of Evey played by Natalie Portman, a character with a magnificent evolution that truly complements the film perfectly, showing the transition between fear and the real fight for her ideals. This character is very important for the production. We observe a quite differentiated before and after of the character, however, what is entertaining is to observe all that transition and what this girl must go through to overcome her inner demons and insecurity that limited her.
From my perspective this dark photography is magnificent to introduce us to the film, the mystery is so heavy that we can feel it on our shoulders, in addition, it amplifies the feeling that anything can happen from the shadows. A dark tonality about politics and conspiracy that visually envelopes the viewer, our senses are kept attentive to what is happening throughout the film's footage.
Although the film does not focus on action we can witness good fight scenes and shooting, especially explosions, however, I must say that the film is not action, although this feature is not limiting to excite the viewer.
Many will know that this film somehow inspires the image of Anonymous, the first thing that can be observed is that they use the same Guy Fawkes mask, the same symbol that V uses to show nonconformity about an unfair system and that in the film is accepted and used by the British who come out en masse to protest with this mask.
In addition to the comparison with the mask we also see in the film a video where the British people are expressed, Anonymous in their famous videos also tries to capture the essence of V in their messages. This is a film that can raise political activists or at least create awareness about the political move.
This is one of the highest rated movies I have ever written here on Hive, it is one of the movies that I like and always remember, perhaps one of the best comic book adaptations, but at the same time one of the most underrated productions of those years in my point of view.
This is one of those movies that you need to see more than once to understand it, but each new viewing represents a new discovery in its plot, so watching it several times is very entertaining. Many people don't like this kind of plot with a certain complexity, but in particular I am fascinated by them.
I do not want to extend too much on this production, perhaps someone has not seen it and the least I want is to ruin the experience with spoilers, however, this production is one of those that is necessary debate, explanation and theories. Maybe later I can make an explanatory video with spoilers for those who have already seen this fabulous movie.
Yes, absolutely, of course, of course I do. It is an excellent movie, but it is necessary to take into account the complexity and that it may be necessary to go back scenes to understand it, this may annoy some viewers, but in my case I enjoy it. If for some reason you haven't seen it and you found it interesting, see it. I will wait for your comments.

Che Guevara was perhaps the last great hero the world has seen.
A non-peaceful, armed hero.
Not Gandhi, then, but the exact opposite.
If the tyrant goes further, kills, controls, enslaves, then perhaps we must oust him using his own weapons, using violence.
In this V for Revenge breaks the patterns, breaks the Hollywood epic of the good hero, without stain and without fear.
The figure of the man, or woman, willing to all but not to be like the enemies they fight.
V is a man, a figure, a legend who wants to get his hands dirty, does not want to come to terms with ethics, with the purity of the "good" John Wayne style.
He's not a Marvel superhero, he's not a DC superhero. He is a man in the flesh, without superpowers, without masters, with a prevailing moral code that has as its ultimate goal to fight for freedom.
It's gonna take bombs, death, blood to get there. Then blood it is. Let violence flood the streets of this corrupt world.
And it is as beautiful as seeing that the most famous face of the 2000s is actually the symbol of a faceless struggle, of a faceless man who takes refuge behind a mask.
His is an epic, timeless battle that starts as a revenge and ends up being a desperate and passionate cry for revolt.
A revolt that starts from within and manifests itself with an indelible visual power, indelible as bloodstains on a white apron.
One must be willing to do anything to achieve what one believes in.

Tutti i vostri occhi inizierebbero a brillare.

This is a cross post of @dedicatedguy: V for Vendetta - "Beneath this mask there is more than flesh. Beneath this mask is an idea" by @dedicatedguy.
Post in tune with the interests of the community.

Another day another movie recommendation my friends which is today V for Vendetta (2005) directed by James McTeigue with the help of the sisters Wachowski who were the writers have managed to do something beautiful and also is one of the best anarchist films which I have seen. I've already seen 2 or 3 times this movie and every time he gave me a sense of rebellion and is among the few movies that have managed to do that. I know it's a very famous movie, but I'm still gonna talk about it because probably not everyone has seen it yet and I may be able to make them curious to see it. Let's get started and see why I liked this movie so much and I'll explain a few things about it.
I really liked the idea of the movie which portrays a tyranny-led england where you have an extinguishing program like in jail, there is a lot of corruption, people are afraid to fight until someone starts to remember their situation, all who rise up against this system are called terrorists, the television is lying the people saying that it was something else, the system censors a lot of things,so in conclusion we have to deal with a dictatorial system.
In this crazy system an anarchist appears by name "V" who is trying to remind people that this system is not as good as they thought and he wants to start a revolution against this system who wants to kill him at any price.
I liked the screenplay of this movie very much also the acting of the actors especially Hugo Weaving and Natalie Portman who proved their professionalism with scenes that will remain in my mind. Is a movie I recommend especially for those who love this genre and I'm curious about your opinions , also don't forget to request the movie genre which you like to be recommended for tomorrow.
My rating 9/10
You can request a genre ( without anime, documentary )for the next day and if you want to participate you nead to write down in a comment the genre of the movie you want to be recommended for the next day,but if there are more genres required for that day, the winner will be that one who will have the most votes from the others who want the same genre like you.
