(ENGLISH VERSION)
Ratatouille (2007): Not Everyone Can Cook
Hello, everyone! Today I want to share this movie with you. Even though it’s a kids’ movie, I think it can teach us some great lessons.
Let’s get started!
PLOT
The story centers on a rat named Remy who loves to cook. Ever since he discovered his talents, he’s been sneaking into an elderly woman’s house to steal ingredients—and, above all, to watch one of the greatest culinary icons on TV: Chef Gusteau.
Remy is part of a colony of rats living in the countryside. One day, while watching the news, he learns that his idol, Chef Gusteau, has passed away. At that moment, he doesn’t realize that the elderly woman has seen him and begins chasing him all over the house with a shotgun.
As he tries to escape, the old woman accidentally shoots at the ceiling, causing part of the house to collapse and exposing the entire colony. All the rats scatter, but Remy loses sight of his family and ends up separated from them.
Not knowing how to find the others, Remy begins to talk to an image that appears in his mind in the form of Chef Gusteau. This figure advises him to calm down and find a way out. Remy continues moving through the sewers until he discovers he has arrived in Paris. To his surprise, he wasn’t that far from his favorite chef’s restaurant, so he decides to visit it.
There he meets Alfredo Linguini, a somewhat clumsy young man who works in the kitchen. When he sees Linguini preparing a soup incorrectly, Remy decides to step in and begins to improve it by adding some ingredients without anyone noticing. However, Linguini discovers that a rat is cooking and manages to catch it.
After several mishaps, Linguini realizes that Remy seems to understand him, and an idea occurs to him: they should work together. Remy would cook, and Linguini would assist him. Thus begins an unusual partnership in which the rat becomes the true talent behind the dishes prepared by the young man.
Thanks to Remy, Linguini manages to recreate a soup that had received rave reviews and begins to earn everyone’s respect. Since he needs to learn more about cooking, Colette takes it upon herself to teach him. Little by little, Linguini begins to make a name for himself and eventually becomes the restaurant’s new head chef.
But Skinner, the former chef, suspects that something strange is going on, as he can’t understand how someone with no experience could cook so well. After investigating, he discovers that Linguini is the son of the late Chef Gusteau and that, in reality, it is Remy who is preparing the delicious dishes.
Meanwhile, the famous food critic Anton Ego decides to visit the restaurant to try the food. However, things get complicated when the other chefs discover the truth and walk out, leaving only Colette behind.
Remy, Linguini, and Colette then decide to prepare one last dinner for Ego. To everyone’s surprise, Remy prepares a dish that reminds the critic of his childhood and completely changes his perspective on food and the restaurant.
In the end, the original restaurant closes, but Remy, Linguini, and Colette manage to start a new chapter together and open a small restaurant. There, Remy finally proves that, despite being a rat, he has immense talent and can fulfill his dream of becoming a chef.

MOVIE REVIEW
This is a movie that really makes you think about how, if you set your mind to it, you can make your dreams come true, no matter where you come from.
Something very beautiful that Chef Auguste Gusteau said was: “Anyone can cook, but only the bold can be great.”
Remy thought he was wrong because not everyone can cook: it takes training, experience, patience, passion, and, well, many things to become a good chef. But as events unfolded, he realized that Gusteau wasn’t referring to exactly that.
We all have dreams and goals we want to achieve, but it’s up to us to reach them. Of course, preparation and experience are necessary, but so are motivation, passion, and the drive to keep going.
Along the way, things won’t be easy. You’ll have to face many obstacles and challenges; that’s when we’ll see who really wants to keep going and who would rather give up.
Remy proved to his family—especially his father—that he could become a great chef. His dad didn’t believe that was possible, mainly because that was the world of humans, and it seemed impossible that a rat could ever be accepted as a chef.
From a very young age, Remy realized he had great skills, which he honed over time. He did so partly because it was something he truly loved: learning from recipes, from television, and, above all, from his main mentor, Chef Gusteau.
I also think this is very important. We should always have a role model—not to copy them or do everything they say, but so they can give us direction or insight that helps us find a better path.
They always say it’s good to seek out people who are excelling in their fields, so we can learn how to improve ourselves. They can also provide us with advice, tools, and insights that we can put into practice.
Now, speaking of the critic, we can see that he is a lonely, grumpy man whom nothing seems to cheer up. But everything changes when he tries that special dish that reminds him of his childhood. This scene is beautiful.
Sometimes I think we get so caught up in seeing the bad in people and attacking them that we forget to look at what’s truly important around us. Ego was like that: he wanted the restaurant to close and be forgotten because, according to him, it had already passed its heyday.
But reliving the memory of his mother through food was something that shed a kind of light on him, helping him wake up after everything he’d been going through. Furthermore, upon learning what was happening between Remy and Linguini—even though it took him a while to process it—he didn’t see it as a bad thing. Quite the opposite: he acknowledged it in his final review.
He also didn’t agree with Gusteau’s quote until he went through this experience and finally understood it: “Anyone can cook, though not everyone can be an artist; a great artist can come from anywhere.”
He also thanked Remy and congratulated him, as he considered him a great chef.
He also realized that, to become good at what you do, there has to be a lot of hard work behind it. But that doesn’t mean that only those who have money, better opportunities, or come from good families can achieve it.
A person can come from anywhere in the world. The key is that they must want it and desire it deeply, as well as work hard to become the best version of themselves.
On the other hand, we also see Skinner’s envy and perhaps his stagnation; he wanted to stay in that position forever and make easy money selling frozen food—something that went against all the restaurant’s ideals. But he was only interested in his financial stability.
And then there’s Colette, a young woman who had to work very hard to get to where she is because, as she herself explains, the kitchen was a male-dominated world. However, she proved that women can also make their way and excel in this field.
It’s really lovely how, at first, she tried to protect her position, but she ends up helping and supporting Linguini because perhaps she saw herself reflected in him.
Without giving it much thought, she helped him and wanted him to grow as a professional. She tried to give him all the advice she could so he could become someone great, and she trusted him, even when his entire team quit.
This also shows how important it is to surround yourself with people who support you, encourage you, and share your values and ideals. These are the kinds of people who will help you grow—but not just you: you’ll grow together.
I think these were some of the best parts of the movie. I hope you enjoyed it, and if you have any other lessons to share, I’d love to hear them here.
Perfect for watching with the family.
Genre: Animation, comedy, and family drama.
