Red Rocket is a 2021 American black comedy drama film directed by Sean Baker, and written by Baker and Chris Bergoch. It stars Simon Rex, Bree Elrod, and Suzanna Son in her feature film debut. The film stars Rex as a middle-aged, newly retired porn star who leaves Los Angeles for his small Texas hometown, plotting his way back to the life he once had. Along the way, he begins dating a 17-year-old girl.
We continue with the review of Sean Baker's filmography. It is the turn of the funny Red Rocket, which was well received at the Cannes Film Festival the year of its premiere, and also won some awards for the leading actor. Despite these achievements, it is not a film that the general public has seen. I hope that with the success of Anora, new moviegoers will be interested in seeking it out and enjoying it.
Red Rocket is another x-ray of characters from a real America that we rarely have the opportunity to observe in such an enjoyable way. Drama and human conflicts, wrapped in very funny situations. It is part of the filmmaker's hallmark, which uses the naturalness of his actors to chronicle his society.
There is one scene in particular that made me laugh a lot. Simple and shocking. As we watch and listen to Trump's first election campaign rally on a TV, the camera shows the protagonist putting together some marijuana joints to sell and behind him are his wife and mother-in-law, lying on the couch, watching TV, and we hear when Trump says they are going to Make America Great Again.
The story revolves around Mickey Saber, a broke porn actor who returns to his hometown, where his wife, whom he hasn't seen for years, is a former porn actress and now a prostitute. Mickey is a character we identify as the rogue. He passes up no opportunity to survive in the concrete jungle of our modernity. A man who only seeks to live from day to day in the hope of achieving the coveted American dream. Doing whatever it takes and taking advantage of whomever it takes.
Adapting again to this environment, either by social prejudice and the economic crisis that affects them. But without letting themselves be defeated, always devising some way to take advantage. That's why his encounter with Strawnerry, the 17-year-old girl from the Donut store, becomes an opportunity to return to Los Angeles as a porn producer and discover a new star.
The poor and forgotten America. Characters in the midst of frustration looking for a way to make a living. Some wanting to escape the sad reality of their lives living in a shitty city. I love how Baker tells us this story, because with all that desolation, he does it by creating very funny situations.
All the characters are played in a very natural way. Of course Simon Rex, the actor who plays Mikey, stands out. Bree Alrod is very believable as Lexi, who has similarities to characters in other Baker films. I was fascinated by Suzanna Son's beauty in this film and her character is charming.
Check it out, watch it and let me know what you think in the comments.

ENGLISH
A man will return to his hometown to once again seek the American dream.... "Red Rocket"
I believe that in cinema there are no stories as real as those that relate the lives of different characters who dream of obtaining a large amount of money in a magical way; the so called "American Dream" is something that many people believe and when a good story is told using that as a basis I think you can enjoy a good film because it is inevitable not to feel that what we are seeing can be real because at any time in our lives we can dream of obtaining a certain amount of money without the slightest effort, the problem is to believe so much in dreams that can turn us into victims or victimizers to be obsessive to achieve just those dreams.
In "Red Rocket" we will see the story of "Mikey Saber" who is a former porn star and is going through a serious economic moment, that makes him return to his rural hometown after 17 years reuniting with people from his past as his wife and mother-in-law; Mike is someone not at all reliable who uses the power of words to deceive and use anyone creating a false emotional stability and thanks to that "talent" is that he will connect with several people activating in him the possibility of reaching again a great dream that will make him return to his old life although like any dream he will have to fight so that it can become real and not become a great illusion.
This is the first time I see a project of the director and screenwriter Sean Baker; from the first moment I liked the shots at the beginning of the film because they are different and that is because of the unusual, it seems to me that it gives a different perspective to those who see the film and I can imagine is so that we can hook in the first moment with this film; Another thing I like is that he takes the time to show the different places where the story takes place because it is important to change colors and lighting and that helps to have the perception of the protagonist of each situation he must live in the quest to achieve his dream.
The script written by Baker and Chris Bergoch is what I liked the most about this film; even though the quest to achieve the American Dream is the basis of this story, I think the methods to reach that achievement (so to speak) is what fascinated me the most because what the main character of this film represents, what he longs for, is what makes it possible to accept and at the same time abhor, I talk about fascination because unfortunately in real life you can meet people who act this way; I think this story tells in a perfect way the desire of any person to get money quickly and constantly, one where you can end up being used and even later learn to use others. I like that it tells the story of a man who lived or had fame using lies and continues to lie to recover that past life and just thinking about those lies gives him the power to make others fall and then create a real problem.
I remember seeing Simon Rex in TV productions in the late 90's and in comedy films in 2000, at times I read that his career as an actor could not have been better because he had a past involved in porn productions and that prevented him from getting different roles in many other film and TV projects, I think that's why I had the feeling that his work in this film would be special because I thought he could do a great role using his own experience, but that was by having a wrong notion of what this film really was and what his character was. The performance of "Mikey Saber" by Rex is superb because this actor has the presence and the use of the plant to bring this character to life that at first you can create a connection, but then as you get to know him better it is inevitable not to feel a complete rejection and that is where Rex's performance is outstanding.
I had a great time watching "Red Rocket", it is an excellent story of people who are less benefited economically and emotionally and that it is precisely this emptiness that makes them fall into dangerous deceptions that can affect their lives in the future; the demand that every poor person has to get money in an easy way can cause a life full of problems where the main one is that they become victims and the worst thing is that they are used by people who are the same or who are in a worse situation, that is what this film is partly about, which can be perceived as a reflection of how the situation is in the poor society, but I think that more than anything shows the vulnerability of people who have very little and long to have everything no matter which way to achieve that dream. There is another theme that I liked and it is how porn is perceived, as people who are sunk in that world and relate it to everything that surrounds it and that is something very well done by this director and screenwriter, I think that's a great reason that originates part of the first half of this story as its end and I bring this remark at the end of this publication because I think that despite being important for the story of the protagonist, I think that everything that happens can be used in other situations to try to get money in an easy way; now there is another thing about pornography in this story and that is as a kind of denunciation of how this film company is managed, how it uses people for the benefit of some regardless of the consequences in the future, that's why again I refer to the importance of the script and the performance of Rex because they know how to interpret everything that happens when selling a quick idea of finding money by entering the world of porn; for all this I recommend watching this movie starring a great and horrible character and I regret that this actor was not on the list of nominees for the major film awards.

›'Red Rocket' by Sean Baker Review: Vulgar, unique, and visually beautiful@namiks1566d
I have mentioned here in the past that I am not that fond of the films released by production company A24 so much in recent times. While the independent company appeared out of nowhere with some interesting hits that made the film industry feel a bit more fresh than it did as the plague of superhero franchise films started to hit the screens, I found their films started to become rather stale and formulaic. These films were good, interesting, and crafted quite well; though they felt rather forgetable, and predictable. They lost their appeal with me rather quickly, and as a result I stopped paying so much attention to the films released under the A24 brand. That said, I can recognise when something is worthy of the praise it receives. Strangely, for a film released under A24's independent wing, I actually have not really heard anything about Red Rocket. The film appears to have entered the world without much of a pop or sizzle as it comes and goes in the similar A24 fashion.
Understandably that might be due to the gritty nature of Red Rocket, where vulgarity and its attempt to shock and sicken and make you feel uncomfortable are forever at the forefront of what it has to offer. It's a film that very much deserves to be named just that: a film. One that is unique, strange, with characters you can neither love nor hate, and a story that makes you question just how this managed to get greenlit. It feels much like a feel that would've been released in the decades prior, being a small release that gains a cult following -- though I suspect that might even be the case as time passes and more discover the film. And I hope that is the case, because even with its vulgarity and strangeness it is a film that is fresh, with incredible performances and some truly beautiful cinematography. It's an idea among an industry seemingly void of ideas.
Red Rocket
Actor Simon Rex -- some of you may recognise from the days of Scary Movie, in this instance, the film Scary Movie 3 as the hardened clown that portrays a caricature of 8 Mile's early Eminem -- appears out of nowhere to deliver an incredible performance as a washed-up former male pornstar that has hit a new low, returning from Los Angeles with nothing to his name to his former-but-still-current wife and her mother in a decayed town in Texas. With no money to his name, no job, and not even a method of transportation, he attempts to rebuild his life and return to his glory days through acts of continuous desperation and schemes.
Rex's performance as Mikey Saber was one that completely surprised me. Pulling off a character that is slimy and constantly trying to bend people to his will in order to get something he needs, but somehow being quite enjoyable to watch. There's something about the character's writing and the performance which portrays him as someone that is simply disgusting, but somehow he grows on you, being someone that has a particular aura that can still make you laugh despite annoying everyone else. And this is particularly how the film portrays him: annoying. Everyone in this small town in Texas utterly despises Mikey, refusing to have him around even for a few minutes. It sets up this structure of slowly giving the audience pieces of character development as context that allows us to see more of who he was before he left, and why everyone hates him to this day.
A protagonist that is highly unlikeable and downright creepy is precisely what pushes the film's narrative forward. It's difficult to not entirely hate the character, but you find a guilty pleasure in watching the endless awkward moments he gets himself into and seeing how he manages to squeeze his way out of rising tensions and scenarios; he's constantly lying to people and trying to get people on his side, and for the most part it works due to his near refusal to accept rejection. Every attempt at getting something is met with begging, stating that things are only temporary, and that he's just hitting a low moment in life and needs a little help to bounce back -- that there's always this upcoming return to success in the adult film industry just waiting to happen for him.
As you can expect, things don't quite turn out as he states they will, and it is evident why people despise him and we see the many desperate attempts he takes to fix things and come out on top, even going as far as manipulating those younger than him in attempt to go from performer to agent with the intentions of running out of Texas and back to Los Angeles with this newfound 'talent' he's discovered.
Visually beautiful and captivating
While the decayed urban sprawl of Texas shows its lack of beauty, even so in the many people featured in the film, Red Rocket is visually beautiful. The film appears to have been shot on anamorphic lenses which produces a very oval bokeh when it comes to background separation through depth-of-field. This is something I always love to see, as a massive fan of anamorphic, very stretched-out perspectives through wide angle lenses. Though this is amplified by the use of an Arriflex 16 SR3 camera! I've worked with these cameras before, and they're an incredible 16mm film format camera that produces utterly beautiful images with the right film stock.
Red Rocket uses a particular film stock that is incredibly vibrant, the film is full of beautiful colours that counters the gritty nature of a decayed Texas, and promotes more gentle tones and highlights alongside the lighter colour use from the art department. I really enjoyed this, actually. The colours of the film next to the use of 16mm film go together perfectly, and the use of 16mm film stock in a feature film is a rarity as it is! I found myself paying so much attention to the interiors in particular, the ways the lighting rolls off into shadows as well as the colour palette somewhat reminded me of the new wave Hong Kong films I adore: shades of blue and purple, yellow and green.
There's an interesting point to be made regarding the colours and how they represent the prior glamour and success Mikey had, and while he still believes he's part of such success and glamour still, he's in fact surrounded by the dirty, the run-down and decayed, the messy castaways of society of which he now belongs to as much as he'd like to believe otherwise. These uses of colour display his delusions that he can bounce back no matter how bad things get for him; ultimately we see the colourful optimism of his mind and his perception of the life he now lives.
Even if this is my own perception of the film, I find it works very well. It's a film that pulls you in and gives you reasons to dislike and like the protagonist, utilising character development in a way that ultimately isn't trying to tell you anything more than what it needs to about these characters, even when the rest of them barely even look like actors. Though Sean Baker is known for casting people in his films that aren't even professional actors.
This made me appreciate the film much more, knowing I had very little knowledge of who these actors were or whether I had seen them before allowed me to see their performances as more authentic and unique to this individual film. In turn, this even supported the film's comedic elements, adding to the strangeness of the film's characters and story.

REVIEW
[ ENGLISH ] This movie is super quirky! I give it extra points for the originality of the story and the way it is told. Love the colors of the settings and the personalities involved in this story! I would say that it is super fresh: it is like a breath of fresh air. For that alone I recommend you give it a try! But that's not the only thing that makes it special! The situations here are insane. You never know what is going to happen and problems are just around the corner waiting, lurking silently and that only generates anxiety. I think the director did a very good job of playing with our emotions in this installment.
This film tells us the story of a 'nopor' actor who returns to his wife's house after years of not talking to her. After she accepts that he stays, things begin to happen and everything turns into a snowball that goes from bad to worse in an unstoppable way. The main character takes his time to present us the true face of him but when it happens everything makes sense. He arrives all beaten homeless, with no place to stay and once we get to know him this makes all the sense in the world. But I'll let the movie show you why all this is because I don't want to get into spoiler territory. This story is intelligently told and I appreciate this!
The entire cast in this movie does an excellent job. There are great personalities throughout this installment, we have white trash, drug dealers, stripers, there are characters who don't even speak -hahahaha- and even a dog that is there as a kind of impartial judge who is not influenced by the most seductive of personalities. But I think Simon Rex and Suzanna do an outstanding job. Rex is charming as the protagonist and plays into the impression you have of him from the start. He is an unpredictable guy, nice but he hides something. And this movie does a good job of showing us what that something is. One of the best things about the movie is seeing this man act in such an interesting role as this. You don't know if you love him or you hate him, you don't know if you like him or if you hate him or maybe it's all at the same time. In particular, I think he has sociopathic tendencies and I think he is a good example of this type of person. Although in reality this man never hurts the people around him, he is like a magnet for problems and uncomfortable situations and does not seem to care. in the least and I think she will never learn from her mistakes. Now, Suzanna is... mesmerizing. Her character is something you don't want to stop watching! He is a combination of innocence and malice delightful to watch and I think he does an excellent job! His role is definitely one of the most interesting things about this movie. I want to keep hearing from this actress to see what else she has done and what she is yet to do! In addition, the incredible performances of this super cast are accompanied by an interesting direction. I was struck by how careless she is, but behind that there is a lot of technique and a striking personality that will keep you glued to the screen. The camera slides around the events almost clumsily but makes for some beautiful cinematography at times that I thought was great. This direction is strangely professional, maybe when they see it they will understand me -hahaha-. And the scenarios full of vivid colors match in an almost paradoxical way with the darkness of the situations in this movie. That seemed to me something very interesting within this movie. The pastel colors and the sunny settings contrast with the problems that are generated under the good weather of Texas. I think it's something remarkable and the director does a very good job of telling the story in this way.
I don't know how this movie went under the table. The truth was that I had no idea about her until I came across her by chance on the internet. But what luck that happened! The A24 studio continues to stay on top choosing good projects and I hope it doesn't stop. Of the last movies I saw from this studio there is one called "The Green Knight" which is very good! If you haven't seen it, stop by and tell me what's up! Finally, this roller coaster of strong emotions, memorable characters and settings full of vivid colors will leave you wanting more! I definitely want to see more of this director. After his last movie "The Florida Project" I was delighted but now after this new installment that corduroy has a new fan! I won't miss anything he does in the future and I hope you won't either! Without further ado, I say goodbye and I hope that this review has helped you to choose the next movie you will see! greetings to all, I hope you are well! See you in the next review!

I will play all the genres that come my way (or eyes) be it action, comedy, Sci-fi, etc! So if you don't have to watch this afternoon stop by this channel and I'm sure you will find something to your liking!
Here below you will find the trailer for the movie of the day!
