  1. Rouge One: A Star Wars Story - The movie that saves the franchise [ENG/ESP]@fabian981826d

    Hello everyone...

There is no doubt that the star wars franchise is the most legendary and unsurpassed in history, since it began with George Lucas in 1977 it has brought us many movies, series, and games that have kept us entertained for a long time.

But just as things have their good moments there are also bad moments, and since the mouse company bought George Lucas' production company and produced the new star wars trilogy things have not gone well at all, in fact, movies like Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi, Star Wars: Episode IX - Rise of Skywalker and Han Solo, made many fans dislike the saga (mainly because they had to make movies with family friendly content, stupid Disney).

    image.png SOURCE

Luckily, we have someone like Dave Filoni who has done incredible work that makes us forget the bad tastes left by those cinematic failures. And although Rogue One is not directed by Dave Filoni or even involved in the production, it follows the same course as the golden age of Star Wars movies and shares the same thinking as Dave Filoni's productions, as it focuses on exploring other characters from the Star Wars expanded universe and not just the problems of a dysfunctional family.

Therefore, I would like to review one of the movies that have saved the franchise from falling into oblivion: "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story".

Years after the Republic fell, the Empire is working on a new secret weapon capable of destroying entire cities and wiping them off the map (there is a demonstration when they destroy Saw Gerrera's lair) but to complete this weapon requires the participation of the Empire's most important and brilliant scientist, Galen Erso.

One day while Galen is living on a remote planet with his wife and daughter Jyn, he is brought back to the force to work for the Empire on this secret weapon, his wife is killed and his abandoned daughter sets out on a new path being raised by Saw Gerrera as a Rebel fighter.

13 years later a defector pilot of the empire issues a message where Galen warns of a destructive weapon that the empire is creating and is about to be completed, Jyn along with a group of renegades have the mission to stop the plans of the empire and steal the plans of this new superweapon and pass them to the republic to destroy it, but on the way they face many dangers and against the personalities of his companions who will make the mission difficult.

    General aspects

Rogue One, is a spin-off of the canon of films in the Star Wars franchise, as it is located between episode 3 and episode 4 (In fact at the end of rouge one you can see the scene where episode 4 begins).

This spin-off is directed by Gareth Edwards, known for movies like Godzilla (2014) and Monsters. This movie features important stars such as Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Riz Ahmed, among others.

It was released in late 2016 and had a very big success at the box office, I remember when I had the opportunity to see it in the theater and the most impressive thing was how much Darth Vader appeared at the end annihilating the soldiers of the resistance.

    My Opinion

Rouge One is a movie focused directly on what it was made for, as I mentioned at the beginning there is no drama about the Skywalker family none of them appear only Leia and Darth Vader but as secondary characters, rouge ones a movie focused on the decisions that are made in the heat of battle, decisions that affect in real life to many people. It is also a movie that shows that to achieve the success of the war missions it is necessary to take dark paths, for example, Cassian (Diego Luna) has the mission to kill Jyn's father to stop the progress of the creation of the death star, something that did not agree with the team.

For me, this movie meets all my expectations and more, as it takes the original path that had the classic star wars and although in this spin off no Jedi use the force, I can categorize it at the same height as episodes 1 to 7.

Although the only disappointing thing is that they did not leave any character alive to continue exploring the history of the expanded universe of star wars, and although it may not be necessary, it would have been exciting to see Jyn or Cassian continue the struggle of the resistance on other fronts, which is itself the empire encompassed the entire universe so there is plenty of stories to tell.

That's why I want to give Rogue One a score of 9.2 and I would love to recommend it to you if you haven't seen it yet, you can do it in Disney+ which is available along with all the movies and series of this magnificent franchise.

And if you have already seen it, I invite you to do this mini memory game that I found on the internet, the goal is to remember the exact order in which the characters died, I got a disappointing score of 5, so I need to refresh my memory watching this movie again if you want you can write me in the comments what was your score:

  2. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) - Love Lost As Midpoint@lionsuit2937d

    IMG_20180613_183356.jpg

In the early stages of this film we have a girl broken, torn, lost as a result of everything the Rebellion was and is. She doesn't care. This is not her war. She's "out."

    IMG_20180613_201446.jpg

    IMG_20180613_201245.jpg

The only thing she has been motivated by so far is survival and hope of reconnection with her father.

    RogueOne5849bdca4b008_2040.0.jpeg

    The midpoint brings much change.

    IMG_20180613_201455.jpg

Jyn connects with her father, and immediately they are separated. He is left for dead. You can see the pain in her eyes. She is threaded into the war with fresh wounds, fresh motivation.

    IMG_20180613_201715.jpg

From here we run, the truth comes out amongst the team, a division that leads to union.

We have a lead character who is for the first time fully engaged. This is her fight again. She is in.

    IMG_20180613_183334.jpg

New goal. New character. New hope. No return.

    IMG_20180613_201730.jpg

Her and Cassian walking to and boarding their ship shortly after is a moment for the audience to breathe all this in, to recalibrate and celebrate for a moment before our next danger. We also see a new glimmer of love in these moments. Between our two lead characters.

  4. Rogue One Review--Treading Water Til Episode 8@mctiller3442d

Star Wars is in many ways unreviewable.

People will go to see it, no matter what is written about it. People will see it just to be a part of the cultural aspect of it.

    But, still here I write.

Rogue One is a prequel. Not the infamous Prequels that Lucas made, but a prequel none the less, and that leaves it with problems from the get go. You already know how the movie is going to end.  We know that the Rebels at the start of A New Hope had gotten stolen plans on how the Death Star worked. It was in the opening the crawl. This entire movie is an introduction to another movie.

Because this isn’t an episode, there is no opening crawl. Which makes sense, considering that this movie is the opening crawl for the next movie.

We do get the iconic “A long time ago in a Galaxy Far Far Away…”

The opening scene we are introduced to Galen Erso, Lyra Erso, and the main character Jyn Erso played by Felicity Jones. It during this scene that I believe we get the first Star Wars Meta reference. A Death Trooper picks a Stormtrooper doll. I enjoyed that touch.

Soon after Jyn’s father is capture and mother is killed we skipped ahead apparently 12 years or so, and we find Jyn is in prison. Now, why she is in prison, like a lot of plot points, in this movie is never mentioned. And this prison cell is dirty, unlike Leia’s prison room in the Death Star in the original Star Wars. We also hear prisoners being tortured from a far.

This is Star Wars with the emphasis on the War part.

Soon after, for whatever reason as we are never told why, Jyn is being transferred to a labor camp planet, and here we find the most honest detail in a Star Wars movie—an exhausted Stormtrooper. He sits there looking at the floor, his elbows on his knees.  The Stormtrooper is clearly a dude who is exhausted and just doing his job. And in a few seconds he is going to be killed, as Jyn is rescued by Cassian Andor and his droid K-2SO. That is part of the job description of a Stormtrooper—getting killed.

    The forced humor

The Humor isn’t Jar-Jar Binks level, not even close, but it is still forced.  And it comes only through droid K-2S0. You have to ask, why is a droid the only one around with a sense of humor? While everyone else is walking around with depressed and angry. Who was the clever person that programmed K-2? Was he or she killed? Why isn’t he or she around?

The problem with a prequel is that you already know where the story is going.  You may not know exactly what is going to happen on the way, but you do know where the story is going, and takes some the of the interest away.

    Yes, Vader is in it.

But he didn't need to be.  Why does Crinnic need to travel to Mustofar to visit with Vader one on one?  Doesn't this universe have long distance holographic communication?  Wouldn't that be safer for Krinnic, because he wouldn't be inconveincing Vader?  And yes, there is a very intense scene at the end where Vader kills several rebel soldiers.  This where the story changes differ from the original Star Wars.  In the original movie, Leia says that she is a part of a diplomatic mission.  Kinda hard to make that lie now, when Vader actually watches you rip your ship away from his ship.

A better movie would have used Vader in the background, not put him out front.

Star Wars brings back cutting edge technology.

Bringing Peter Cushing back with the combination of an actor and CGI was landmark work. Being a Star Wars nerd I clearly knew that this was CGI. I knew that Cushing has passed away  in 1994, so anytime his character Grand Moff Tarkin. It really was great, and the reason I know that is that other people, i.e. non-Star Wars fanatics didn’t realized that the character was CGI, they didn’t know any better. That’s the goal. The only reason we know that Tarkin is CGI, is because we know the actor is dead

Even the young Carrie Fisher scene was beyond belief. Why do I think this? As I walked out the movie I heard one parton explain to who seemed to be his mother, that it wasn’t a look alike actress. It fooled regular movie goers. That is mind-blowing.

Overall, Rogue One is clearly an exercise in treading water while we wait to see Episode 8 where the story will continue to a place where we don’t know what is going to happen and that is much more interesting.

  5. 📽 ROGUE ONE : A STAR WARS STORY [Gareth Edwards, 2016] - Movie review by Mandibil@mandibil3470d

What!... A Star Wars movie out of order? Should I be displeased with Disney's lack of obedience to the "trilogy" format of the previous seven installments? Hell no to be honest. It is a bit of badly needed fresh air to a franchise, that could be just about to choke itself to death on the restrictions of its own predictable structure (which the plot of Awakens clearly reminded us). Loosening the chains of the lore more than a tiny bit, opens up possibilities, that has not been available since the first Star Wars premiered almost 40 years ago, which might seem odd for an idea that potentially has a whole galaxy to play in.

Usually I review older movies that are not currently showing in theaters, but now and then I will make an exception. There are tons of reviews about the latest movies and trying to compete on that field is not my intention and most of what is shown in theaters are not movies I wanna go see anyway. But in the case of milestones, in a series like Star Wars, it is different. I went with a notion that I was going to be entertained and that was exactly what i was. All my reviews have spoilers so in this case, be particularly warned if you intend to "watch before reading".

We know how this thing is going to end or at least, I had an expectation to see the threads converge on the happenings in episode IV. That did not disappoint at all, lets just put it that way. There are really many things to like about this movie, but also a few things to complain about. On the overall scale of Star Wars movies, i would put this on a narrow third place... and that is because I hate the Ewoks in Return with such a vengeance. The story side is the weakest part and usually this makes me pull out the butcher knife. But in this case it is excusable because it is an action movie that has to fit hand in glove with the start of, probably the most cultish classic scifi movie of all time. The characters need to be eliminated in the end and so they are, one by one. Therefore we need not focus so much on establishing them but instead just get sufficiently attached to them to like them and sympathize.

So do they evoke sympathy? I think so and what I actually liked was the "fellowship" thing they had going with a gang of highly different types of characters, coming together and working together in a time of great distress and using each others different skills to create a bigger whole. Star Wars have been a long line of quite egocentric leading roles in my opinion, and to see these guys work together and slowly forming a friendship and a team spirit is a nice change. I wished they had focused just a bit more on this aspect, since it is the thread that holds it all together. A nuisance is though, that it has to be race and sex - politically correct. A white (woman), a hispanic, a latino, an asian and an arab (and a droid). We only needed a black person to complete it.

There are still a bit of the deliberately unrealistic heroism of a female lead and men made weaker and more morally questionable than the heroine as we saw in Awakens. But it is much less and the story about her childhood history with her father, how that ties in with the plot and the inevitability of the journey she needs to take, makes it easier to swallow, than the secluded, skinny upperclass type Rey in Awakens discovering that she has powers, that took the most of a trilogy for Skywalker and Vader to perfect.

The CGI is simply in state of the art class. We have reached the point where real life and CG melts together seemlessly and the feeling of being there on a beach fighting a walker seems so close to reality. There are many impressive scenes but the prize has to go to the final data recovery scene on the beach planet combined with a contemporary space battle. Generally the action here is superior to Awakens and I wish that they will use these guys instead of whoever did Awakens in the next episode. The sound effects were fresh and to the point. The score was adequate, but a bit distracting a few times. I have heard that the composer was exchanged a few weeks before finish and in that case I cannot blame him whoever he is.

There are also the mandatory easter eggs of references to th old movies, like in the way it opens with something resembling the opening scene of ep IV. Then there is the nose guy who turns up later in the Mos Eisley cantina and so on. Its fanservice nothing more. But the most important aspect hit home - it was damn entertaining and good fun. A bit of humor by the new droid a few slower scenes with a bit of bacstory. And then a surprise bad ass scene with the villain over all villains showing whos the daddy of the galaxy in the final connection scenes in the end. Loved it. A very recommendable movie

  6. A Geeky Dad's Movie Guide to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story@hanshotfirst3481d

My handle is Han Shot First, my avatar is a cartoon of Han Solo wasting Greedo... and I have an 11 year old son. Of course I went to see Rogue One: A Star Wars Story on opening night. I even kept my kids up past their bedtimes to do it. Did I let them stay up for them or for me? I'm honestly not sure. But I'm very glad I did!

My 11 year old son loved this movie. He would see it again right now. I really liked it (but I can't possibly love it as much as an 11 year old). I would take him to see it again right now. My wife liked it and would rent it again. My 9 year old daughter was too tired to make it through the entire movie so her grade is an "incomplete".

This movie is made for twelve year olds. That is not necessarily a bad thing. There are a ton of very entertaining movies aimed at twelve year olds. I believe this was also the case for the original Star Wars trilogy... and I will love those movies until the day I die.

In my opinion, a movie aimed at twelve year olds has a few essential elements. These include:

    • A fairly simple plot
    • Fun
    • Action
    • Great visuals
    • Someone to root for
    • A distinct beginning , middle, and end (This may sound odd but I mean a story that a twelve year old could explain to another twelve year old. "First this happens. Then this. Finally this..."

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story systematically checks off all of these boxes.

If you are looking for a complicated plot with no holes and a lot of twists and turns, then this is not the movie for you. The plot is very simple... the good guys must stop the bad guys by stealing their plans. (There is a bit more to it than that. However, if that is the only part you concentrated on, you would still have fun). There are a few plot holes... but who cares? The story does its job: it provides the vehicle to get the audience to the awesome final battle scene.

If you were looking for some deep character development, you might be a bit disappointed. You aren't going to fall in love with any of these characters. But that is OK. It is a stand alone movie. You are already in love with the important characters from the franchise. This movie is a side story for the side characters. I bet you will like the characters quite a bit. Unfortunately, there are so many likable ones, that there is no time to truly fall in love with any. But boy oh boy, several of them are a ton of fun!

That is the point of this movie. It's fun. It's a great appetizer to tide you over until Episode VIII is released next year. Rogue One is a delicious appetizer!

There are ground battles with blaster rifles, melee battles with staffs, air battles to support the ground troops, space battles... and a heist. What more could you want out of a "popcorn" movie? No wonder my son loved it. That sounds simply awesome to 12 year old me!

Of course the special effects were dazzling. I don't recall anything new (like the reverse time fight scenes in Dr. Strange) but they pulled off the old standards flawlessly. The space battles are amazing. In addition, the creatures and droids are perfect. The new planets are also incredible.

It takes a little while for the movie to get going, but once it picks up speed, there is a ton of fun. There are just enough jokes (especially from the droid K-2SO) to remind you that you are supposed to be having fun. More importantly, they throw in several "Easter eggs" for the older Star Wars fans in the audience.

As an adult, you really will have to rely heavily on your ability to suspend your disbelief. You will also have to accept that in this technologically advanced civilization, levers are still extremely important. There are a few times where it's essential for a character to throw a lever. After a couple of these situations, this reliance on levers caused me to raise my eyebrow... while my son cheered "Throw that lever!" On the ride home, I brought up the silly use of levers. My son quickly shut me up by reminding me that Obi Wan Kenobi had to throw several levers in order to shut down the tractor beam in Star Wars. Yep. He shut me up real good.

If you are a Star Wars fan, you must see the movie ASAP. If you are the parent of a Star Wars fan, you must take them ASAP... and if you go in with the right attitude, you will have a lot of fun.

As far as the appropriate age for this movie... as always, that depends on each individual child. The movie has WARS in the title so there are going to be quite a few deaths. None of them are graphic. The following line will be the only spoiler. If you aren't worried about kids, there is no need to read the following sentence. The movie opens with Jyn Erso, the main character, as a young child. Her mother is shot and killed by a blaster bolt in front of her. Then her father is taken away. My daughter was sad but not devastated. She was FAR more traumatized by The Good Dinosaur (which happens to be one of the worst children's movies I have ever seen).

*This is typical of the battle scenes in the movie. If your child would be scared by this, you better wait.*

This movie is not suited for very young children. It relies more heavily on action than even The Force Awakens. There is no "cute" droid to distract the little ones.

One final note from the part of me that is a serious Star Wars fan. The writers didn't screw anything up... unlike the prequels. Episode III Revenge of the Sith had one job: show us how Darth Vader became Darth Vader. In my opinion, George Lucas failed miserably. I do not have the same feeling about this movie. The writers had one job (I know it's obvious but in order to avoid any spoilers, I'm not going to write what that one job was )and they did a fine job.

    Geeky Dad's Movie Guide

Number of times I fell asleep: 0 Number of eye rolls: 1 ( I had to put at least one for all of the levers plus one bad joke) Number of face palms: 0 Number of times my kids asked to go to the bathroom or get food out of sheer boredom: 0 Number of times I checked steemit: 0 Number of times I said "That's ridiculous": 0 (I was willing to totally suspend disbelief) Did my kids like it: My 11 year old son: YES!!!!!!!! My 9 year old daughter: yes? Would I see it without my kids: Absolutely. I am a Star Wars geek and I was not disappointed at all. Full price/Matinee/Rental/Free/Not worth the time: Full Price (Full Price three times for my son and I)

Have you seen it yet? What did you think?
