What I thought when I finished the title, is that I have seen a good movie, a plot that keeping small twists and turns somewhat unexpected, manages to put together an interesting story, which in my case kept me totally entertained.

The main character is full of peculiarities that call your attention and you can even identify with certain attitudes of his, the work of actor Denzel Washington is excellent.

What I praise about this film, is the moral case it manages to create, where it manages to put the challenge we are seeing also to the viewer, and makes us think about what we would do.

If you like lawyer movies where values and principles are put to the test, I recommend it.

Hello my beautiful people of Movies & TV Shows this review today I think it will be the hardest to write, because honestly I am not any pro or intellectual about the world of law, the truth is that I do not understand much or almost nothing of how this area is handled, I think if they put me as a lawyer I would die of hunger, because I am a bad defender, the truth is that at home I was never taught to defend myself, or to defend my rights or ideals, the little I have learned I have had to learn it the hard way, but I will do my best to give a decent explanation.

The reason why Roman was always behind the scenes, apparently was because it was hard for him to maintain a fluid communication without ending up falling into a dispute with other people, his character seems almost always devoid of emotions, he is a very wise and intelligent man but it is hard for him to maintain eye contact and avoid defending the rights that he considers fair, because he does not move only for convenience, but for what is best for his clients, regardless of the profits he could get out of it all. He ends up doing or saying what others would not do.

Roman was always a moralistic lawyer, full of principles and a lot of ethics, a very simple and humble man, who for the quality of work he was doing did not earn enough as a prestigious lawyer, his house could be said to be a kind of hovel, but everything changes and his world collapses when his friend and partner dies.

Roman is an advocate for a big movement that he has years working on and wanting to finish to present to the Court, but this was the part I didn't understand much, because I know nothing about judicial issues, he describes himself as a man who stands up for what is truly just, he didn't go beyond doing what was right, so you couldn't say he was a corrupt lawyer, but only took it upon himself to do good and help people.

But as I said, everything changes when he finds himself unemployed, since his friend's law firm was bankrupt and he was charging a pittance for his work, this is where George enters, who has an important and prestigious law firm, whom William left in charge of settling all the debts that his firm had after his death, something that Roman does not take very well, and George, seeing Roman worried about his future, offers him a job.

It is there when we will see a Roman who falls into the dilemma of accepting or not, since he considers George to be one of those lawyers who are only concerned about getting money from clients, but even George is able to recognize his great potential as a lawyer, the only thing is that he does not know his problem in communicating with others.

If I am honest, there is a moment where the film becomes somewhat tedious and even boring, because I personally thought that the story would focus on the defense of a prisoner, but rather everything is based on the ideals of Roman and what he defends as a lawyer, until practically at the end we will understand the whole outcome and the lawsuit that appears at the beginning that he makes himself.

A lawyer who ends up walking a tightrope, maybe out of necessity, maybe out of greed, maybe because he thought he could get away with it, the truth is that this story was not very clear to me, I would have to read a little more to understand the final message, because it was not very clear to me.

A lawyer who ends up walking a tightrope, maybe out of necessity, maybe out of greed, maybe because he thought he could get away with it, the truth is that this story was not very clear to me, I would have to read a little more to understand the final message, because it was not very clear to me.

  3. Roman J. Israel Esq. (film) : Thought it was great until...@gooddream2432d

I somehow got the impression when I started watching this that it was based on a true story and because of that, I initially gave the production a lot more credibility than it actually ended up deserving. As it turns out, it is complete fiction. It is a decent film and Denzel Washinton films tend to be, but upon realizing that there isn't an ounce of real life in the movie, it kind of changed my overall opinion.

Don't get the wrong idea. This film isn't bad at all. Denzel's portrayal of Roman Israel is very compelling as he plays a lawyer with a conscious who is extremely dedicated to his morals over making money just perfectly (I'm not convinced such a person actually exists though.)

    ezgif3a6ebcf2d4972.jpg source

As the film begins we see Roman Israel as a highly intelligent but socially awkward lawyer who prepares legal documents as good as anyone but is extremely uncomfortable in public speaking, a characteristic that isn't terribly conducive to the profession.

He has a photograpic memory and unlike other people in the same profession he believes in strict adherence to the law rather than finding loopholes to circumvent it. He lives on a very poor salary and doesn't seem to aspire to great wealth even though he is very aware of the fact that as a lawyer in L.A., he certainly could achieve that.

Some things happen (not gonna spoil) and he finds himself being forced to work at exactly the type of firm that he despises - one of zero ethics and a strong focus on profitability rather than justice. His employer is a suave, smooth talking top-tier lawyer named George Pierce (Colin Farrell) whom he has nothing in common with ethically.

They keep him around at the firm simply because he excels at certain parts of the legal profession, none of which are getting along with other people in a normal fashion or even wearing clothes that fit him. He discovers that by being unethical, he can acquire great wealth also and slowly sees himself devolving into exactly the type of monster he spent his entire life despising.

One of my favorite parts of the film comes about when Roman is invited to speak to a group of modern-day social justice advocates and they quickly turn on him despite the fact that he is there to help them. This happens because he is old school and uses the wrong pronouns and doesn't understand modern, sensitive terminology. I think this is fairly representative of the world we live in today.

There is a lot more than happens than just what i described above but I fear that I could end up providing some spoilers accidentally if I go into it.

I believe that if Denzel is involved in a project, the film is going to be good on at least a certain level because he is just such a fantastic actor. This film is no exception. While a majority of the film is just a bunch of talking, the underlying personal ethical struggle that Roman Israel undergoes is pretty compelling, and unfortunately, probably not something that a great many lawyers ever experience.

This film failed to turn a profit but resulted in an Academy Award nomination for Denzel which isn't at all surprising since the Academy loves to nominate films that nobody actually went to see at the theaters.

I normally have my mind wander during courtroom oriented dramas but somehow I walked into this film believing it was true and perhaps if I sent you that same direction and lied to you by saying that it is a true story, you would enjoy it a bunch also. However, now that I know that Roman J. Israel Esq. is a completely made up person and story, I can't really say that this one is worth watching. Basically, there are a lot better things to see out there.

    My overall rating!

  4. Roman J. Israel Esq. - Movie Review@coldsteem3134d

    roman.jpg

Roman J. Israel Esq. is the latest film from writer/director Dan Gilroy. Gilroy's dual role debut was his film Nightcrawler which was one of the best films I saw in 2014. The low IMDb scores (6.3) had me a little bit worried about this film, but it was a bit better than those scores would lead you to believe. It was no Nightcrawler, however.

    roman2.jpg

Roman (Denzel Washington) is a Los Angeles lawyer with an activist heart. His savant-like memory and poor people skills have relegated him to filing briefs and doing research while his law partner handles all the court appearances. After three decades of this setup, Roman is released from his law firm as his partner and friend spends the last days of his life in a hospital bed. Attorney George Pierce (Colin Farrell) is brought in to liquidate the last of the firm's case load. Roman attempts to find work for a civil liberties organization, but finds they only employ volunteers. However, he develops a relationship with the office manager, Maya (Carmen Ejogo), who appreciates his sense of justice. Pierce offers Roman a job and the two develop an interesting relationship as they subtly influence each other. When Roman compromises his own code of ethics, it appears he may have sold out and lost his moral compass. His greatest battle, though, appears to be the one raging in his head, as he works through his mistakes in an attempt to find inner peace.

    roman3.jpg

Dan Gilroy has a way of flirting with dark stories and flawed characters that engage an audience. He did it spectacularly with Nightcrawler and has followed up with a solid film in Roman J. Israel Esq. He has a third film in the works that I will definitely have on my theater list. I enjoyed this film. The story is dark, but it has a strong heartbeat. The characters are good and bad in the purest sense. They are flawed in their own ways. The character interactions seem credible. And the influences the characters have on each other give the story its essence. Actions have reactions. This film sets a lot of things in motion and then remedies them with thoughtful outcomes. The darkness that lingers as an undercurrent in this film gives it a bit of electricity that keeps you on your toes. The film doesn't take the easy way out, delivering a strong story with outcomes that are firmly rooted in reality.

    roman4.jpg

The performances in this film held up the solid writing. I was bothered by the gap in Denzel's teeth, which did not look like CGI. Nor did it look like a prosthetic. So I googled it. Sure enough, I learned that Denzel had a gap between his teeth growing up, which he repaired with a cap. He decided to remove the cap to give his character a frumpy appearance. The look was superb. His character comes across like any of the many public defenders I have met in my life. Farrell, as the high powered attorney George Pierce also looks the part. Of course, his was just tailored suits and slicked back hair. But Farrell definitely looked the part. The pair had good chemistry on screen. They start out in an almost adversarial relationship which develops into a more sincere friendship. They were the anchors that made this film work for me. The rest of the roles were throw away roles to me. Anyone could have been cast and been alright.

    roman5.jpg

Roman J. Israel Esq. has a two hour and nine minute run time. It didn't feel that long. The film had steady pacing for a film that did not have any action sequences. The intense attention paid to the character development kept the film moving at a steady pace without a lot of wasted screen time. The film was given a PG-13 rating by the MPAA for language and violence. There is also talk about a homicide, which is a central theme in the film. This film did not have anything outwardly graphic that would cause me concern with young viewers.

    roman6.jpg

Roman J. Israel Esq. isn't perfect. The pacing may seem slow to some, since the film doesn't offer a lot in terms of action. For engaged viewers, I don't think the pacing will be an issue. It did not feel long or slow to me because I was interested in the characters. The film has a dark streak, but never loses itself to that darkness. The characters were particularly good and the performances solid. I am not sure why this film is not getting better ratings. It is a pretty solid film. 7.5/10.
