  1. ⚔️ Samurai Champloo – Swords, Beats, and the Rhythm of Freedom@zeruxanime185d

Samurai Champloo is a bold fusion of eras—samurai action colliding with hip-hop culture in a way that feels effortless and timeless. Directed by Shinichirō Watanabe and released in 2004, this anime blends sharp swordplay, road-trip storytelling, and modern music into a journey that’s as cool as it is heartfelt.

When I first watched it, I was struck by its energy. It moves to its own rhythm—sometimes chaotic, sometimes quiet—but always authentic.

    🗡️ Three Paths, One Journey

The story follows three unlikely companions: Mugen, wild and unpredictable; Jin, calm and disciplined; and Fuu, a determined girl searching for someone tied to her past. After crossing paths under tense circumstances, they set off together on a journey across Edo-era Japan.

Their personalities clash constantly, but that friction becomes the fuel that drives the story forward.

    🎵 Hip-Hop Soul in a Samurai World

What truly sets Samurai Champloo apart is its soundtrack. Hip-hop beats, scratches, and lo-fi vibes—curated by the late Nujabes—blend seamlessly with traditional settings, creating a soundscape that feels fresh and emotionally rich.

The music isn’t just background; it shapes the mood, the pacing, and the identity of the series.

🌄 Episodes Like Stories on the Road

Each episode feels like a stop along a road trip—sometimes playful, sometimes intense, sometimes reflective. The anime explores themes of freedom, identity, and the weight of the past without ever feeling heavy-handed.

Action scenes are stylish and fluid, but the quiet moments—shared meals, late-night talks, silent walks—are just as powerful.

💫 A Timeless Blend of Style and Heart

Samurai Champloo is about movement—across land, across emotions, across different ways of living. It celebrates individuality, choice, and the courage to walk your own path, even when it doesn’t fit the rules of the world around you.

If you’re looking for an anime that feels unique, soulful, and endlessly rewatchable, Samurai Champloo is essential.

It's been a long time since I watched an anime with swordfights, so when I stumbled upon this one last week I immediately tried watching its first episode. However just when I thought I could finish it before Friday, our finals became unforgiving so it took a longer time for me to finish it. I know you're probably familiar with this one because I already read some reviews about it here, and so today I'm finally motivated to share my take on it. Set in Edo Japan, an unusual friendship will be formed by a series of unfortunate events. So now join me as we take a brief plunge on the quirky yet perilous journey of the odd trio in Samurai Champloo.

    About the Anime

    IMG_20250602_200059.jpg

Samurai Champloo is an original anime that premiered in the spring of 2004. It aired from May 20, 2004 to March 19, 2005. This is an action-comedy anime that features the adventures of an unlikely trio—two swordsmen and a woman and it was set in Edo Japan. Since it's set in that era, it's obvious that its main themes are historical and samurai. This 26-episode-long series was animated by Manglobe and was directed by Shinichiro Watanabe.

    IMG_20250602_200118.jpg

Everything was peaceful not until one unfortunate event changed Fuu's life. Accidentally spilling the drinks she's carrying on the son of the local magistrate, Fuu was harassed by his men. Left with no choice she made a deal with Mugen, a rogue samurai who happened to stop by at their shop. With his wild and eccentric fighting style, he easily overwhelmed the men but unfortunately just when the luck was on their side, Mugen decided to pick a fight with the newcomer samurai. Since he had no intention to fight, Jin just parried and evaded his attack. However, Mugen shows no signs of wielding and so with his calm and refined sword-fighting, he fought with Mugen until they destroyed the whole shop and killed the local magistrate's son in the process.

    IMG_20250602_200132.jpg

Now about to be executed for the crimes that they've done, the two shared their names. But the night before their execution, Fuu came to their prison cell and offered them something. She asked them to be her bodyguards in exchange for helping them break out. Unfortunately, their plan to break out didn't happen that night, instead, it happened on the day of their execution. Despite their seemingly successful escape, the two were reluctant to join her, but a coin toss changed that.

    IMG_20250602_200202.jpg

An unlikely bond was formed and on their journey, they met a lot of people—both new and old acquaintances and foes. Along their way, hunger, uncertainty and distrust will plague them. Will they find the samurai—the one who smells like a sunflower—whom Fuu has been looking for? Or will their group crumble in the face of those problems?

    untitled.gif

I was quite confused when Fuu said that they were going to find the samurai who smelled like sunflower because sunflower doesn't have much smell. I once tried smelling sunflower before so I knew it didn't have any strong or distinctive smell, so how can they find him? Anyway, I knew I shouldn't overthink about that one, but I couldn't help but to do that. Its plot was a slow burn, like it doesn't focus always on their pursuit of the sunflower samurai—or is it just them getting lost along their way haha. I love that despite the serious mood of their settings, they can occasionally throw jokes—weird jokes that really cracked me up.

    IMG_20250602_200217.jpg

Like for example, that hot spring firefly scene, was something really unexpected. Amazingly, they're able to deliver comedy without making much silly faces and gestures—just witty dialogues and on-point facial expressions. Also, as for the characters it was nice how diverse they are—especially the main trio. I like that they aren't just potrayed as flat ones, rather they utilized the whole series to show the depth of their characters. I once thought that Jin would be just the usual cool guy, but as it progressed, I realized that there's more to him. I thought he'd be the one with less chance in romance, but rather he became the opposite of it. I don't want to spoil how come, but if you want to know—just watch it!

    untitled.gif

As for its visuals, it reminds me of Sara-iya Goyou and that's not surprising because they're both animated by the same studio, Manglobe. The color palettes that were used were nostalgia-inducing. It definitely gave off Edo Japan vibes and it just went well with the mix of modern hip-hop feels of its visuals. The way they animated the fight scenes was cool and I like how hooking and entertaining those scenes are. Mugen's erratic fights which kinda looks like a mix of swordplay and breakdance were really fun to watch because it matches his unorthodox samurai character. Also, Jin's precise and calm swordplay was enthralling and the way he fought just reminds me of the traditional samurai.

    IMG_20250602_200358.jpg

And now for the soundtrack, this one for me, is the most distinguishing aspect of this anime. It sounds refreshing because it's so laid back. The jazz and hip-hop vibes in it really made the anime cool, and although at first, I found the scratches on every transition quite unsettling, I soon became used to it and even became one of the details I know I won't forget from this anime. Their soundtrack definitely deviated from the usual samurai anime soundtracks because instead of using traditional instruments for background sounds or music, they mostly used modern jazz or hip-hop music and amazingly it just matched well with it. I especially like ending song on the last episode because it felt like a nice goodbye to the whole series.

    untitled.gif

Further, the VA did well in portraying their character and of 'course it's impossible to not notice that Mugen's voice is same as Zorro of One Piece. However, even though they sound the same, the VA still was able to portray Mugen's quirky behavior and the same for Jin! His voice really fits well with Jin's calm demeanor, and I certainly find it attractive hehe. By and by, the soundtrack may not be the usual ones you'll get to hear in this kind of anime, but certainly, it became one of the most memorable aspects of it.

    IMG_20250602_212928.jpg

So overall this anime is an 8.9/10 for me. Although the visuals and soundtrack impressed me, still there are some parts I find idle. I don't have anything against filler episodes, however, I find them unappealing especially if they are not that relevant to the plot. But the good thing is that they ended it on a hopeful note. It wasn't a definite end, rather it's more like an open-ended one. So if you're interested in a historical anime with both comedy and action, then clear your second thoughts and try Samurai Champloo.

Before I end this review, I'll share with you its trailer, so—

  3. Samurai Champloo@seki1513d

I have seen this anime be mentioned in multiple reviews, lists and conversations of Samurai animes. It's name never far from the likes of Ruruoni Kenshin and Afro Samurai. Now I haven't watched Afro Samurai, but I have watched and I'm a major fan of Ruruoni Kenshin. So last week, just by a whim, and because I had a little more Internet left in my night plan bundle, I decided to check it out.

    Samurai Champloo

*** ### Plot > In Edo Japan, the era of Samurai's is at its peak and there's hardly a region without one or more of its own Samurai dojo training hard warriors for their Shogun. These Samurai's are used to quell trouble, but of course they can also be the cause of trouble. Fun, a waitress at a tea house is being harassed by rowdy customers. She makes a deal with Mugen, a broke Samurai customer who wandered in looking for food. Mugen deals with these customers and faces Jin, another Samurai who just happens to walk into the tea house. As Mugen and Jin face off, the tea house gets set on fire and they're captured. Fuu rescues them, in return making Jin and Mugen promise to follow her on her journey to look for the Samurai who smells like sunflowers. *** This anime is so many kinds of fun and is totally not what I expected. The randomness of it is just insane and we see it start from the first episode. ![untitled.gif](https://media.tenor.com/6gsisoh0uVEAAAAC/samuraichamploo.gif) I'll admit, I had an entirely open mind when starting this show, yet this 2004 anime series totally jad me surprised in all aspects; humor, animation, fight scenes and plot. ![untitled.gif](https://media.tenor.com/Ciwca4OY1b4AAAAC/samurai-champloo-mugen.gif) Mixing hip-hop and the normal Samurai style is a true breath of fresh life into the traditional Samurai genre, and I'll admit, if you just hear it for the first time, it's hard to imagine it working. But it works so well!!! ![untitled.gif](https://media.tenor.com/mBULSOSYUOAAAAAC/mugen-jin.gif) There are loads of things I love in this show, yet I'm just going to list three...
    - The Unpredictability...

This is one show that you really can't say you know what's going to happen next. We're left as blind as the protagonists, Fuu, Mugen and Jin. We know that the end point is finding the Samurai who smells like sunflowers, yet how we'd get there is to be determined. untitled.gif So every episode we see the trio in a new problem or trouble completely unrelated to the previous one. This unpredictability leaves the audience always enthralled and curious. Always guessing at what would happen next. untitled.gif

    - Characters..

The characters chosen are quite a study. I think I know for a fact now that Mugen isn't a character I'd soon forget. The characters chosen aren't one who's grip on your hearts are so sudden and loud that you'll be forced to notice them. They just somehow linger on even when you try to forget. With Mugen, one can always remember his wild way of fighting. Tradition swordsmanship mixed with breakdancing and erratic movements. untitled.gif Then there's Jin with his calm and efficient way with the sword. Skill and speed of solving that is way too impressive to forget.

    untitled.gif

Their fighting each other in the most random of places makes them memorable too. ![untitled.gif](https://media.tenor.com/2nurjo5AnP4AAAAC/mugen-samurai-champloo.gif) *** #### - Animation & Cinematography. *** This is one show that'll make you relook at the date of production and be in awe with how good it was in it's time. From the colours and change of lights and tones to the incredible fight scenes. The animation is one that'll help you truly appreciate the techniques of the old. ![untitled.gif](https://media.tenor.com/IbJn802GGXoAAAAC/samurai-champloo-mugen.gif) *** All in all this was a lovely anime to watch. The perfect mix of humor, action and solemnity about life (because the anime isn't a laugh fest throughout). I totally recommend it to all anime watchers and for all those who like the Samurai Genre. It's said that the director of this anime went on to create Cowboy Bebop and is still the one in charge of Lazarus that is coming out this year. I haven't and don't think I'd check Cowboy Bebop, but I will without a doubt watch Lazarus to see more of Shinichiro Watanabe works.

  4. A Harmonious Blend of Action, Comedy, and Drama - Samurai Champloo Review@fashtioluwa759d

Happy new week, everyone! It's another week for us to discuss some discoveries in the anime world that many of us must have forgotten about. Last night, I was going through my anime list, and I came across an anime I watched a long time ago. It was a popular and interesting anime that I am sure many people do not know about. This anime title is Samurai Champloo.

"Samurai Champloo" is a unique and exhilarating anime that combines historical drama with contemporary elements, creating a distinct and unforgettable viewing experience. Directed by Shinichirō Watanabe, the series stands out for its innovative blend of Edo-period samurai culture with modern hip-hop aesthetics. This anime was released in 2004–2005. It has just one season with 24 interesting episodes. I was privileged to watch this anime in the year 2019. One thing I love about this anime is that it has a way of storytelling that the viewers can easily understand. It also tells some history about the Edo-period stories that increase the knowledge one has about Japan.

The Story Ok, I will try not to spoil the anime, so I will just give a brief explanation of what happened in the anime. The narrative follows three main characters: Mugen, Jin, and Fuu. Mugen is a brash and unpredictable warrior with a fighting style inspired by breakdancing. Mugen is more like a polished street fighter who uses the sword. Most swordsmen always have difficulty fighting him because they do not understand his style of fighting. The only opponent who has been able to withstand all of the Mugen sword fights is Jin.

Jin is a calm and disciplined ronin, adhering to the traditional samurai code. Jin is more of an introvert in the group of three friends. Always wanting to do things in the right way. Jin always keeps to himself and likes to think things through before making plans, unlike Mugen, who does things and then thinks later.

Fuu is a spirited young girl who brings the trio together on a quest to find the "samurai who smells of sunflowers."

The fact that they all met at Fuu's Tavern, where she works, committed some serious crimes, and almost got themselves killed but escaped after Fuu created an escape route for them, made their bond strong. Their journey together to find the sunflower was Fuu's idea because they owe her. The deal was to part ways after they found the samurai that smelled like sunflowers. I am sure you would be wondering how they would find a man who smells like a sunflower. The dynamic between these characters is compelling, with each of their backstories gradually unfolding to add depth to their personalities and motivations.

    The animation, art, and visual.

The animation quality of "Samurai Champloo" is top-notch, featuring fluid fight sequences that are both stylish and brutal. The sword fight and blood were animated well enough. The character designs are distinctive and memorable, each reflecting their unique personalities and backgrounds. The animation is vibrant and expressive, with a blend of traditional styles creating a distinctive look. The action sequences are flawless and dynamic, showcasing the characters' unique fighting styles. Some fight scene of Mugen feel like a dance, while that of Jin feel like a scene that tranquilizes the soul.

Sound Track. The soundtrack, crafted by Tsutchie, Nujabes, and Fat Jon, is a genre-defying masterpiece that impeccably enhances the series' tone and atmosphere. The hip-hop and jazz influences add a fresh and innovative touch to the traditional samurai genre. The soundtrack is one of the most sought-after sounds in the anime verse. I am surprised no one picked it on the Anime Track Thursday.

In Conclusion The anime is very interesting because it talks more about Japanese history and things that used to be in Japan in a broader way than any other anime. It has nothing to do with extraordinary power, and it all focuses on manpower and skills. If I were to rate this anime, I would rate it 9/10. The story, the sound, the art Here is the trailer

  5. Samurai Champloo - Lost, but not forgotten [Eng / Esp]@musicandreview1023d

There are few times that I have seen the same anime twice, I think that only happened with the Rurouni Kenshin Ovas (exceptional) and Saint Seiya, but there is another one that I recently saw again and that is Samurai Champloo. Why? Well, I remember when I watched it it was revolutionary from my point of view and I've been looking for some of that for a long time. I know there must be many anime with very good stories, in fact, there are and I constantly see interesting things, but this is different.

I remember that at that time I did nothing but watch samurai anime set in ancient times, I think feudal Japan is amazing and has exciting stories, the art of war, honor in battles and also betrayal, are some of the things we can find there, but there is also much more than that and those anime show it to us. I remember that by that time I watched Sengoku Basara, Samurai 7, Sword of the Stranger, Afro samurai, Ninja Scroll, among others that I don't remember right now.

Now, what stands out in Samurai Champloo is the constant mix between ancient times (Edo period) and modern times, we see this with musical references, graffiti, visual references and the attitude of some characters, all linked to the Hip Hop and Rap culture, but without interfering in the background with the arguments that are being presented at the time. I think what I mention above was what I felt was revolutionary at the time, not because they are a fan of Hip Hop or Rap, but because they knew how to add those references without damaging the good stories.

This anime tells us the story of two samurai, Mugen and Jin, who being on the verge of death for getting into trouble with dangerous politicians, are saved in extremis by Fuu, a girl who worked in a tea house that was destroyed in the riot in which Mugen and Jin were captured, she in return asks them to help her find the samurai who smells like sunflowers.

    image.png

So they venture in search of that particular samurai, but the road is full of scenarios and dangers that these three characters must face in order to advance in their mission. Something particular that stands out in this anime is the comedy, the two samurai mentioned above do not get along well and do not miss the opportunity to find an excuse to try to kill each other, this is perhaps because of the different personalities they have, one is very educated and cultured while the other is messy and likes to look for trouble.

I leave below a trailer where you can see more or less what this anime is about, you can also see the animation and the musical theme:

As I already said, the music plays an interesting role here, it is noticeable that they try to make it an indispensable element to set some situations and make references to this modern era, which they manage to do perfectly without it feeling too invasive for the story, I particularly liked it. The opening, which is called "Battlecry", is a sample of the good music implemented.

Samurai Champloo - Opening | Battlecry

The fact that the director is Shinichirō Watanabe himself, who also directed Cowboy Bebop and The Animatrix, gives us an idea of the quality of the story and animation, always prevailing the seriousness and adult tones, but without leaving aside the comic reliefs that help to refresh the plots. I want to make it clear that the references to modern cultural elements, do not tarnish or do not generate significant variations in the good stories and adventures in which these two samurai and this girl are living day by day.

I think Samurai Champloo is not one of the most striking or famous anime, I feel that at a certain point it is a lost and underrated anime, but never forgotten for those of us who watched it and enjoyed this revolutionary proposal. So if you want to see an anime that takes you away from what you are used to see, this one is totally recommended.

  6. Retro Review - Samurai Pizza Cats@freddbrito1759d

I have some memories about the anime on which the video game that I will talk about today was based, I was a very small child and I remember that it was shown on TV so maybe this was the first or at least one of the first anime I saw in my life and although there are very few memories I have about this series, I was quite curious to know that this series of my childhood had a video game, so I set out to play it and it turned out to be a very entertaining game. By the way, I tried to look for the chapters of this anime but I found very few (at least in my native language) and with the little I could find on the internet, despite having spent many years and being an anime logically focused on children, I found it quite entertaining and funny.

Today's Retro Review is about: Samurai Pizza Cats.

I don't remember exactly the story of this game, but the little I remember is about samurai cats with unique abilities that act as a kind of superheroes helping and fighting villains. This game is completely in Japanese, and although there is an English translation, the translation is not quite good, however being such a basic and intuitive game the story is something that passes to the background, as we will focus only on its gameplay.

    https://64.media.tumblr.com/36a8bc330180179f0665d9f37ee8a140/tumblr_nen4yeFP8V1r7sijxo1_1280.gifv

Samurai Pizza Cats is a game that originally came out for the mythical NES, so we are not going to find an extremely detailed game and with an outstanding pixerlart work, however, I must say that its graphical appearance is more than decent, the characters look pretty good, with their respective details and character designs very consistent with their animated counterparts. Despite the fact that its graphic and pixelated aspect evokes a very old time, I don't consider it a game that has aged badly at all, in fact, I think that even today it is a game that looks pretty good and that could overcome the passage of time, this being a rather difficult aspect to achieve being such an old game.

    https://64.media.tumblr.com/eebc3675f0fd1f7e4aea56973259bace/tumblr_mnq0e1j2Y51roqda3o1_500.gifv

The characters have large sprites, with good design and details, each playable character has a unique and characteristic design that makes them very well differentiated from each other, in addition, the design of several final bosses are very large, occupy a large space on the screen and look pretty good. Most of the scenarios present basic designs, without many details, but we can also find some much better made, with several decorative elements focused on ancient Japan, with its classic and typical elements characteristic of that time.

I think the worst aspect of the game, that is, it is not all bad and it is not a nonsense, but it is too basic and many of the melodies, although they are different, have similar tones, which at certain times have to be a bit monotonous and boring. But not all of them are like that and some are very decent and fit very well with the theme of the game and its environment. The music in this game is very retro, which is quite logical since it is a NES game.

    Samurai Pizza Cats OST Playlist

Samurai Pizza Cats is another of those games of the platform genre quite conventional, classic and quite entertaining, and although its gameplay is quite basic and easy to learn has an element that makes it different from other games of the same genre and is that we will have different playable characters which we can change when we want because each of them have unique skills that will be very useful depending on the obstacle we have in front of us.

We will be able to choose between one of the three main characters and independently of the main character we choose we will always have at our disposal another group of characters that, as I said before, each one of them has a unique and useful ability depending on the situation, among the characters' abilities we have: flying, destroying rocks, swimming and even digging and going deep into the earth, and many other useful abilities that we will use throughout our adventure.

As a good game of the platform genre we must advance through the scenarios, defeating enemies and using our jumping skills and being very agile. We defeat the final enemy of each stage, which has different mechanics and ways to defeat them, but in general terms it is a game with a fairly low difficulty.

Samurai Pizza Cats is an excellent NES game, quite varied due to all the characters with unique abilities to use, which makes it a highly recommended game.

Hello everyone in the community, today I bring you a review of one of the first seinen I saw, directed by the great Shinichiro Watanabe.

    Review - Samurai Champloo

    image.png Fuente editada con Photoshop

    Historia / Plot

The story is set in Edo-period Japan. Fuu was a young girl working in a teahouse until it was destroyed after a violent three-way fight between Mugen the wanderer, Jin the wandering samurai, and the bodyguards of the son of the town's Daikan. At the end of the fight, Mugen and Jin are arrested for execution the next day. Fuu helps them escape in exchange for their help in finding the "samurai who smells like sunflowers". Despite agreeing to the deal, Mugen and Jin are always trying to finish each other off.

The story narrates their travels, and how they fix the trouble they get into with both criminals and the law because of the conflictive nature of the time when problems were solved with swords, these messes span from 1 to 3 chapters as this series has an episodic format, so there will be very good arcs and others that are not bad but that do not contribute to the development of the plot or explore interesting topics with the characters, but are usually the most focused on comedy. There are times when their adventures are somehow related to important events in the history of Japan, and it could be considered an alternative Japan because in this there is a presence of Hip Hop culture such as rap, paintings that look like graffiti, breakdancing as a fighting style, all this in the middle of the Edo period, this kind of weird combinations typical of director Shinichiro Watanabe as that combination of futuristic theme with jazz in Cowboy Bebop. This might take many out of the immersion but the truth is that you get used to it.

He is the one who initiates many of the conflicts since he likes to look for unnecessary fights because he never loses the opportunity to demonstrate that he is the best warrior with his unique style of combat inspired by a mixture of break-dance and capoeira

Jin is the opposite of Mugen, a reserved and disciplined samurai who considers swordplay an art on which he bases his studies. During his journey he is pursued by former students of his dojo who accuse him of having murdered his master. He has a more traditional combat style but with amazing skill. Jin Before meeting Fuu and Mugen he fights for no one but himself but appreciates kindness and honor"

Fuu is the one who keeps these two rivals from killing each other, forcing them to ally to fulfill their promise. On several occasions she is the "damsel in distress" whose rescue is part of several conflicts in an episode. She does not possess any outstanding physical ability, however she is the most empathetic in solving problems that require only dialogue. With a great sense of duty and with witticisms that can help, and without her the whole group dissolves.

The characters stand out more for their charisma and interactions than for their depth or development, you only see a facet of their personality and what is really interesting about them is in their past and how it is revealed throughout the plot.

The art is very iconic that goes from detailed to something more elastic to facilitate the dynamism in the animation which is great when watching these guys slice up anyone who gets in their way. It's interesting how many of the villains have a design that combines Yakuza with modern gangster and japan criminals like american gang members. Elements of the opening and in external media have Nihonga-based art that matches the fusion of the past with the present.

Obviously there had to be Hip Hop, but the genre that predominates in the SoundTrack is a very particular one and it is also a fusion, Jazz rap. Having four albums including the opening and ending, the composers who worked on the ambient music are Nujabes, Force of Nature, Tsuchie and Fat Jon; I know all these details because I use these albums to write or draw, they help to concentrate (this was written with the album Impressions). Its only mistake is that it doesn't usually fit with the setting because of what I had already said about the old Japanese atmosphere, if in the character design is already weird, in the music is even weirder.

    En conclusión / In conclusion

Samurai Champloo is a unique anime in the samurai genre. It brought us one of the most memorable trios of travelers, excellent action scenes, a soundtrack that may depend a lot on subjectivity but that fascinated me, making Nujabes (may he rest in peace) one of my favorite composers in a genre that little or nothing called my attention. I give it a 7.4 of 10

  13. Samurai Champloo || Mugen Fanart@bek-seii2717d

Hello AA! Here with another drawing, I felt like reverting back to traditional and decided to draw Mugen from Samurai Champloo. I love that series and I love this character. Let's get to it.

For anyone who just wants to see the result:

    20190129_191623.png

    And now for the process...

    Sketch:

I started by drawing a rough circular shape for the head, adding lines as a guide for the facial features as well as for what direction he will be looking in.

    Screenshot_20190129-184532.png

I then began to move down, sketching in his torso, drawing his clothes over the top as I went along, adding small details such as creases to the clothing as well as his collarbone.

    Screenshot_20190129-184534.png

Afterwards I began to draw his arms, his left arm hanging down by his side whilst his right arm held up as he holds his sword. I drew the outline of the sword and then began to fill in the details, saving me having to do so later on.

    [ Screenshot_20190129-184536.png

[C]I started to finish up the clothing, adding all the final details such as the strap and shirt underneath along with more creases and such.

    [C][IMG=BOL]

Moving on, I began to shape the head somewhat, making his chin more sharper and his jaw more prominent. I then sketched his facial features, lining his eyebrows with his ears and then underneath, sketching his eyes narrow, looking onwards. I then added his nose and mouth along with his stubble and earring.

    Screenshot_20190129-184538.png

Using short, curved lines I sketched his hair, starting from the back of his neck and working my way to his fringe that I dragged up. I then added bits of hair hanging down the side of his face.

    Screenshot_20190129-184540.png

Lastly, I began sketching the background, starting with the trees that I sort of just scribbled in and the the mountains in the distance. I finished of with adding a stream of water below along with a sun descending.

    Screenshot_20190129-184545.png

    Screenshot_20190129-184547.png

    Inking:

I then went over the entire sketch in ink, using a dip pen to clean up lines and add extra details to the background and such. When I erased the pencil I only lightly erased the trees as if be going over them in marker later.

    Screenshot_20190129-184550.png

    Colouring:

    Skin:

For the skin I used: -Almond -Blush -Dusky Pink -Praline

I used Blush as the base for the skin and began to layer over it using the darker tones listed, mostly around areas such as the neck, arms and the side of the face. I then used Dusky pink to colour over as the new visual colour.

    Screenshot_20190129-184552.png

    Hair:

For the hair I just used a paintbrush and ink to fill it in along with the eyebrows.

    Screenshot_20190129-184556.png

    Clothing:

For the shirt and the eyes I used Berry Red only to fill them in, as I didn't feel shading was too necessary as I would be going over it in white ink later. I used Turquoise for the strap and earring

    Screenshot_20190129-184558.png

I then used a warm grey to colour the shirt underneath and finished off by going over him with white ink, adding creases and strand lines to his hair amongst highlighting his skin and clothes.

    Screenshot_20190129-184601.png

    Scenery:

    Mountains:

For the mountains I used: -Dusky Pink -Praline -Saddle Brown -Burnt Sienna

I used Dusky pink as the base for the mountains, layering Praline in the cracks and amongst the lines that make up the texture of the rocks.

I then applied that sweet Saddle Brown and Burnt Sienna to create some extra tone and blended in using the Dusky Pink once again. I went over that in white ink like I did for Mugen.

    Screenshot_20190129-184559.png

    Trees:

For the trees I used: -Lush Green -Pear Green -Bright Green -Lime Green

For leaves of the trees I used a dabbing effect with the markers, saving dots with the darkest tone which was Lush Green and gradually get lighter all the way to the Lime Green to which I proceeded to blend the colours in with. For the branches I used Praline and Burnt Sienna.

    Screenshot_20190129-184603.png

    Sky

Dor the sky and the sun I used: -Mandarin -Amber -Sunflower -Yellow

I started with applying Mandarin at the bottom of the sun as well as the bottom of the sky and began to blend out gradually using the lighter tones, sunflower being used as the main visual colour.

    Screenshot_20190129-184605.png

    Screenshot_20190129-184606.png

    River:

For the river I used: -Denim Blue -Azure

I coloured the entire river in Denim blue, not leaving any white lines as I would add that in a bit with the white ink. I then applied Azure along the rocks and wave lines, blending out with the Denim blue. Lastly I used the same colours as I did for the cliffs to colour the ground with.

    Screenshot_20190129-184608.png

I then added details to the rest of the drawing with the white ink on areas such as the trees and river as well as the sun.

    And here it is finished:
