  1. Sherlock (2010); The G.O.A T??@osarueseosato1507d

Hello and Welcome. To those of you who know me and see my post regularly you know what kind of content I put here and for those of you who are new, I welcome you to what we can say is arguably one of the best movie review blog on the hive network.... That last bit of course has no actual proof but I'm all about speaking things into existence now so bear with me. (God!! I miss my sense of humour in these posts, where did that all go??)

Where was I? Oh yeah. On today's episode of movie reviews with an "overachieving" twenty something year old Nigerian boy I would be taking you through the one film that passes to me as the greatest film show of all time. It is important to note that this post was original scheduled as my entry for the latest movie community contest but alas i wasn't able to meet up but here it is none the less. I guess that's all of took for me to find back my sense of humour. I don't really have anyone to blame other than myself though. So instead of bitching around and complaining here's the post none the less. Let's talk about the greatest TV show ever produced in Cinema history and the next best thing out there.

    The Introduction

Throughout the new millennium there have TV shows that have stood out head above the rest when it comes to delivery compelling stories and quality dramatic performances in the form of television shows. Most of them in my opinion really shifted the power dynamics of TV shows from sitcom shows which ruled the market in the 90's (I'm talking about you, FRIENDS, Family Ties and Fresh Prince of Bel Air) to much more dramatic and even action based performances. Some of these new shows include the hit television show Lost (which quite honestly had me feeling quite lost after sometime), 24 the show that made Kiffer Sutherland popular (yeah I bet some of you didn't even know that was his actual name), Breaking Bad (or as I like to call it a meth head's favourite TV show) and Prison Break (aka how to play chess in real life). These are just examples of shows which really took of in the early 2000s and made people realize the potential in television shows and not just television shows but drama/action/crime television shows. This is also the time Keeping up with the Kardashian's became popular and with it's success reality TV shows really found a market, a mulit million dollar market to be precise. Then came the 2010s and we were about see a new kind of television shows. Shows that would intrigue us with clever writing and intriguing characters as well as an engrossing story line. At the turn of the decade no show in my opinion encapsulated these three things better than 2010's Sherlock. So let's take a look at all the reasons why this is the best mystery thriller show out there.

    Sherlock (2012)

    ** #### Synopsis

e8a749db99772379e5ecf9fa4b139784.jpg source The show is basically a modern day adaptation of the stories of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, a set of stories in which we see hyper intelligent detective consultant Sherlock Holmes team up with war veteran Dr John Watson as they solve mystery murder cases all around London. In the case of this series we see them unravel these curious cases all the while being toyed with by a shadowy man or organisation simply known as Moriarty. As those of you who are familiar with the story know Moriarty serves as the primary villian to Sherlock in the story however the way this series handles him is quite unique. Anyways back to the story. Throughout the first and second season this rivalry continues to build up and it does so in such a way where each individual case Sherlock and Watson solve is one way or the other linked to the manipulations of Moriarty. As Sherlock says in the finale of season 2, " Moriarty isn't a man, he is a spider at the center of a criminal web, a criminal web with a thousand threads and he knows precisely how each and every single one of them dances".

1b884bffabfe27f2271752c8c9da3f08.jpg source Along with the underlying plot of the intellectual conflict between Holmes and Moriarty there are also cases which Holmes solves regularly and these cases usually are the most mysterious or the most interesting ones as he puts it. Each cases lasts for about an episode and there are roughly twelve episodes in total is you discount the zero episodes that start each season because they mostly serve as side stories and are not really central to the plot. The first season ends with the reveal of Moriarty as the main antagonist while season 2 ends surprisingly with the supposed death of Sherlock Holmes and Moriarty. In fact Moriaty is confirmed dead in the third season and it is revealed that Sherlock actually survived after we see a montage of all the weird theories on how he possibly survived the "reichenbach back" which is a metaphor for his apparent suicide. There's a lot more I would love to say about the general story but I won't be able to do it here cause that would just take up more time. So with that said let's get into the juicy bits of this cinematic perfection.

    What makes Sherlock work?

    2f92874c289abc388672b512141c7cf8.jpg

Without a doubt I will say unequivocally that Sherlock is the best TV show I have ever seen till date. In order to write this particular article I had to go back to see it again so I could get enough information on the film and it occurred to me how long it has been since I saw a TV show I completely loved it. In the past few years I've seen a couple of TV shows, some good and memorable ones and some really forgetable ones but none and I saw none has captivated my interest like this show and that's considering I've seen powerhouses like The Blacklist, Game of Thrones and Warriors. I thought that maybe in seeing it again after first seeing it in 2013 I would lose interest in it believing that my initial memory of it was one tainted by immaturity hence the reason why I might have been initially captivated by it but boy was I wrong. What this experience came to teach me is cinematic perfection is a learnable art and you can successfully craft a cinematic masterpiece by following some simple rules. Rules which the show runners of this stellar Benedict Cumberbatch performance understand how to manipulate in order to work. So let's look at the reasons why this show works and how other TV shows can craft the perfect mystery crime thriller TV show

    YpihifdXP4WNbGMdjw7e3DuhJWBvCw4SfuLZsrnJYHEpsqZFkiGGNCQDhH79fn9Ce9Shia9SKwrMU4eEuwAdNLnSxiHHrskq3AW9LwXr6NmyJgiCfr31AdTgnYHn76aRxFUzQujo8m1MdFSomPnHShdY8XsvPvvW6qPzbVaCFWfx.png

A fascinating lead character and a host of other interesting supporting characters.

714d13a6320cffc201d8bdd5d0d7b920.jpg source What's the one thing that Sherlock, Dexter, The Blacklist and The Mentalist have in common, a complicated, super intelligent, high efficient lead characters with grey morals and not so great personalities and also there all eloquent and have a way they make regular conversations sound like poetry. These shows all have protagonists who seem sort of or are outright devious but are on the side of good. They are all highly confident and they usually seem very much in control of situations so much so to the point that even when they face situations that genuinely beyond them, they find ways around it either through clever trickery and skill or through plot convenience even though these show writer cleverly find ways to mask these plot conveniences to make them look organic and not forced which by the way is a tell tale sign of a brilliant show. So the lead characters of these shows show these traits and it makes them very interesting. They have quirks, skills, knowledge and talents that make them stand out and give them a competitive edge over the challenges that the plot throws toward them. Accompanying this the writers of these shows craft the story in such a way that the challenges that these main characters will face are of equal proportions to their strengths.

faad411ac2d30a9f0d6332e8b1268bad.jpg source Many times these challenges are designed in such a way that they test the highlighted strengths and weakness of these main characters thereby making the confrontations interesting. I mean let's look at the cases that Sherlock has to solve in the show as well as the final problem he has to solve with Moriaty. The crimes are intellectual problems that ordinary people can't figure out. It takes a mind like that of Sherlock to be able to figure it out therefore it's easy to see how the problems are made for him and he is made for the problems. That alone makes the story already interesting because we view each new investigation as a puzzle and we work with Holmes as he solves these puzzles in quite some fantastic ways and at the end of puzzle we see that all these crimes are linked by a single person; Moriarty. Inside serious anticipation builds up and we cannot wait for the eventual showdown between these two characters because the story does an excellent job of building each character up to the point where they become interesting, Holmes with him solving all the mysterious crimes and Moriaty with him creating these convoluted schemes. Added to this is how the supporting characters add a humanistic element to the stories and they keep the stories grounded and dramatic so that we don't get lost in the metaphysical and epistemological elements that usually come with great mystery stories.

    YpihifdXP4WNbGMdjw7e3DuhJWBvCw4SfuLZsrnJYHEpsqZFkiGGNCQDhH79fn9Ce9Shia9SKwrMU4eEuwAdNLnSxiHHrskq3AW9LwXr6NmyJgiCfr31AdTgnYHn76aRxFUzQujo8m1MdFSomPnHShdY8XsvPvvW6qPzbVaCFWfx.png

Highly competent but deeply flawed lead characters with challenges and situations that highlight their flaws.

94c12f45d9434349db3ebc929f70b433.jpg source In this modern day and age of female empowering films one thing that many writers have begun to do is creating practically invincible characters that are inherently flawless and practically undefeated simple because of the belief that they are women and women can do anything. I lost my mind when I heard Kristen Stewart’s character mention how they were women and that meant they could do anything. It’s proven time and time again that nigh invincible lead characters are virtual impossible to root for simple because they don’t make relatable convincing characters. All characters should especially main characters should have flaws because in that way they are able to go through character arcs where we can see them for who they are, and the plot progression changes their perspective and conveys the central theme of the story. It’s this approach that this series takes and it does it absolutely well. Like I pointed out in the previous subheading Holmes is a seriously obnoxious, condescending, arrogant, prick who is super-intelligent and who possess an ungodly level of deduction skills which he uses to get ahead in life.

74968afcaba1e946521dbcfa667b2d43.jpg source However instead of having him written as some superior characters who is gifted, arrogant, loved and idolized, he is written as a man who is simply gifted and arrogant. Asides these two things many other aspects of his life struggle because of his poor socialization and his rude behavior. The story in itself is focused on the cases he is presented and the underling plot behind it all however it does well not to idolized his character while simply ignoring his character flaws. Instead it opts for creating challenges that make him realize the error of his own ways even to the points where he has to doubt his own competence and even begin to feel other human emotions such as fear, grief and regret. It’s as though as the story progresses he becomes comes to terms with his own hubris and he begins to value the people around him more and this change and growth is characterized by John Watson’s presence in his life. This is how characters should be written and it’s what many female lead action films fail at. Instead of focusing on writing relatable characters they instead opt for writing kick ass characters with very little well… character and so even though they might try hard to force heroic themes into them they still feel unoriginal and forced.

    YpihifdXP4WNbGMdjw7e3DuhJWBvCw4SfuLZsrnJYHEpsqZFkiGGNCQDhH79fn9Ce9Shia9SKwrMU4eEuwAdNLnSxiHHrskq3AW9LwXr6NmyJgiCfr31AdTgnYHn76aRxFUzQujo8m1MdFSomPnHShdY8XsvPvvW6qPzbVaCFWfx.png

Philosophical and Psychological themes and not shallow simple themes shown in the form of well thought out stories.

dd9939e0e03502ca5cdf64b8925cb874.jpg source In my opinion, the best stories are the ones with surreal elements and surreal elements are what elevate the status of any murder mystery. It’s not that it is necessary for all murder mysteries to look psychedelic as there are some that work none the less but surreal element s add more.. what’s then word flavor for lack of better words to the story. It also is the best way to portray metaphysical themes making us question our reality and what we perceive as truth. This series does exactly that. Several times throughout the show we get access into the mind and thoughts of Holmes as he makes sense of the information around him. We get an insight into the mind games that he and Moriaty play and we see him it play put not just through their dialogue but also visually. The perfect example of this is when we see him enter into his mind palace during John Watson’s wedding as he solves the case of the Mayfly man. We see an acted out version of his text conversations with six different women whom he is talking to at same time. Then there’s his confrontation with one of his most difficult opponents Appledoor in which we see this visualization element used again quite brilliantly. It used in tandem with suspense and anticipation and when it is eventually revealed to be something mental rather than physical we are left with suspense and despair in anticipation for the next season. Throughout the entire series highly philosophical themes are touched on and a lot of questions bordering on morality are asked from whether or not intellect and knowledge far supersedes emotional experiences and social connection with people. Themes such loneliness and betrayal are portrayed in such a way that they make us question the morality of people whom you build connections with even after accepting and justifying the loneliness you now live with.

    Conclusion

7e2d3020a1f94858c6269ae126291c6e.jpg source All in all this film is a classic and it very much deserves the spot for being the best mystery thriller, heck the best series out there and I know that many people might not agree with it and many might debate it and they do have their own opinions. However there are a number of strong evidences that prove this film is the best to ever do it. Its patterns and techniques have been replicated by many other shows and these shows have relatively been successful from Reacher to Hannibal. This shows that there are many things in gets right and that human psychology and storytelling are deeply related with the right stories creating the right response from viewers. That’s all I’ve got to say for today and until I see you again Ciao.

  2. Sherlock - The appeal of the science of deduction | A BBC series@therealflaws1874d

    English version below

    image.png planterclaire.tv

image.png ‘Sherlock’ a big winner for BBC’s finances

image.png Cuando Sherlock encontró a Watson

image.png What Sherlock Holmes Can Teach You About Business

image.png 5 reasons there's no way Moriarty is dead on "Sherlock"

    English Version

    image.png planterclaire.tv

Despite being a fairly well known name, I don't know why bringing it to the screen has been a bit confusing. A movie and a series that are completely unrelated in anything, at the moment I saw it I thought they were connected, but then I ended up learning that the movie starring Downey Robert Jr has nothing to do with the appearance of the amazing Benedict Cumberbatch in the series produced by BBC. I remember perfectly when I was cruising Netflix and this series came into my eyes, it was one of those days where I was completely bored, who knew it would be a series that I ended up watching more than 3 times because of how amazing it was?

I'm talking about a few years ago when I watched this series, but to this day I can remember most of the relevant aspects this series had to offer at the time, so, in this post I will give a mini review of Sherlock, all the potential it had as a series and the capacity I believe it had to achieve so much more.

image.png ‘Sherlock’ a big winner for BBC’s finances

    My opinion about the protagonist

I honestly feel that Benedict Cumberbatch did an amazing job playing the role of Sherlock, all the facial expressions, the charisma and the whole way he acted as such were completely incredible aspects that made Cumberbatch demonstrate incredible on-camera work.

From my perspective, I consider Cumberbatch to be an actor who can easily play the role of someone intellectual, or at least someone who can represent a group or be the leader of one. Just look at his role in Doctor Strange and tell me that there really could be an actor who could have played a better role. I don't think there is anyone better suited for either Doctor Strange or Sherlock.

Throughout the series we are given an indifferent and insensitive Sherlock, I have never read the books so I really don't know much about the "original" or classic personality of the detective, but I quite liked the fact that he was presented as someone who simply does his job in an extraordinary way, although with a kind of strange personality, it didn't bother me at any time, something that usually happens to me with "strange" characters in series/movies.

image.png Cuando Sherlock encontró a Watson

    The cast

Well, the first character we meet is Watson, but obviously this is not the main character, I mean, the series is called "Sherlock" and not "Watson", right?

I'm 100% sure Watson appears in the books, I've seen many, many references to this character before watching the series, and his addition in this series despite having been somewhat classic and true to his principles. Seeing Martin Freeman here was a bit weird at first, his face was a bit familiar to me from his small appearance in Black Panther, I didn't think he could be a lead actor in a series, and he still did an excellent job.

I consider secondary characters to the rest of them, but the most outstanding of these was Mycroft Holmes played by Mark Gatiss, another character quite outstanding in my opinion since he is Sherlock's brother and he is also super intelligent, every intelligent character in this series is quite interesting.

image.png What Sherlock Holmes Can Teach You About Business

There are many characters that will bring this series to life, I was quite attracted to the interesting language used in the series and the scenes where Sherlock or any "intelligent" character would make comments that would add really interesting information to the plot or simply demonstrate their intellectual supremacy. The most "normal" of all these characters is Watson and yet he still manages to not fall behind when it comes to getting attention in the series and also incredibly contributes quite a bit to the plot.

What I don't understand is how they left the post-war traumas that Watson suffered, at the beginning they show him as a person attending the psychologist due to all the traumas he had after the war, something that was completely forgotten throughout the series. If I remember correctly, the series tries to justify this by saying that because he stays in frequent action thanks to Sherlock's "hyperactivity" he manages to keep his psychological problems behind him. But I'm absolutely certain that this is nowhere near anything realistic.

I emphasize realism since this series makes use of logic, or at least that is its intention. So I don't understand why they would let such an obvious detail pass, it wasn't necessary to add a detail that in the end would end up being forgotten and giving a small hole in the story. But nothing important anyway.

image.png 5 reasons there's no way Moriarty is dead on "Sherlock"

    The antagonist

Without a doubt, one of the best actors I've ever fucking seen in my life. Andrew Scott.

This actor is for me one of the best contributions that this series could have had, it is not simply because of the script that was given to him, basically all his acting and the way he gets into the character is simply incredible, there is no one better than this actor and I am completely sure of this.

Jim Moriarty is the main antagonist of most of the Sherlock series, I would like to describe in depth why he has so much relevance in the story, but I'm worried about giving a spoiler unintentionally. Anyway, Jim Moriarty is basically the opposite mind to Sherlock, someone who is competing against him and who has a far, far more wicked and equally (if not more) intelligent mind than his opposite.

I don't have many words to describe this actor and the role he had, truly the work done by him was AMAZING and there is nothing better than the scenes and the twists he gives to the plot every appearance he makes, he not only completely transforms the plot by being the villain, but also makes us appreciate this character despite going against the main character. Had it not been for this character, the series would not have been half as good.

I recommend watching this video with discretion, as it may contain spoilers, but it is a very good way to see the work done by this actor.

    Conclusion

Sherlock is one of the best series I've been able to watch in my entire life, it was a direct brainwashing that made me doubt everything, not knowing who to believe and above all, enjoying every moment of the series. There is so much more I could have told, but I don't want to give spoilers or something similar, so hey, this is as far as this Sherlock review goes.

    Thanks so much for reading!

    ✨ Benedict Cumberbatch ✨Martin Freeman ✨Amanda Abbington ✨Una stubbs ✨Andrew Scott ✨Louise Brealey ✨Rupert Graves ✨Zoe Telford ✨Vinette Robinson ✨Mark Gatiss

    Argumento 🕵️

    Sherlock Holmes - English 🕵️

    ✍️ About the creator ✍️

The writer Arthur Conan Doyle, born on May 22, 1859 in Edinburgh, left us with one of the most famous and brilliant characters in history. This is, of course, the beloved detective Sherlock Holmes.

To create this curious character, the writer was based on a professor he met during his university years, this is because the man had a great ability for deductive reasoning. Also memorable are the characters who live alongside him, such as his friend, the war veteran John Watson, and his eternal enemy, Professor Jim Moriarty.

Thanks to these stories Conan Doyle not only achieved worldwide fame and sustenance to devote himself fully to writing, but revolutionized and raised the genre of the detective novel. It is not surprising, then, that the famous detective has been taken several times and over the years to the big screen of film and television.

It was in one of these TV series when I met Sherlock Holmes, played by an actor who made me get fond of him and the character, pushing me to walk through a work that then had my face hooked to the screen, wanting to know more and more of the events that happened in the story. It was thanks to this series that I directed my steps to Conan Doyle's books and it is precisely about it that I want to talk to you.

    ✨About the series✨

Sherlock Holmes is a British television series produced by the BBC that began in 2010. A total of 4 seasons were recorded, each of them filmed in the years 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2017 and a Christmas special in 2016. Although in an interview it was revealed that the fourth season was not intended to be the last, to this day there is no news of a possible fifth season. It is something that was left up in the air and that, if it were to be realized, it would be something complex to carry out since coordinating the cast's schedules to work together again is something almost impossible.

The series was written by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss and co-produced by Hartswood Films and WGBH. Filming took place between several locations including London and Cardiff and featured the following cast:

    ✨Benedict Cumberbatch ✨Martin Freeman ✨Amanda Abbington ✨Una stubbs ✨Andrew Scott ✨Louise Brealey ✨Rupert Graves ✨Zoe Telford ✨Vinette Robinson ✨Mark Gatiss

    Argument 🕵️

The story is set in the 21st century and begins not with the character that gives it its name but with the war veteran John Watson, who is also a doctor. This man meets an eccentric and strange character, who is none other than Sherlock Holmes. They eventually end up living together at 221B Baker Street and it is here that they begin their adventures and of course, their friendship.

Sherlock has excellent deduction skills that make him an efficient detective who uses his own methods and skips some rules, he is intelligent, cocky, inconsiderate and with an emotional detachment that makes him better at his job, although just as we are shown a person almost without feelings, as the chapters go by we can see that he goes through many moods and that he even becomes someone vulnerable with a past that he has to discover.

The story of these two consists of investigating and solving crimes, at first products of different authors. However, Sherlock later encounters a rival who is on his trail and is out to get him. It is incredible to see the outcome of two masterminds confronting each other.

    😍My appreciation😍

This is a series that I am quite fond of, as I said before, I really like this Sherlock Holmes, both the character and the actor who brought him to life. Although it is somewhat strange, intelligent, seems to be selfish and unfeeling, with a range of flaws and defects, that's what in my opinion makes it special and striking. He is one of those characters that if you scratch a little further, you can discover that they have heart and reasons for being the way they are, a complex and tangled future in which the past has a lot to do with.

The plot is interesting, filled with a lot of intrigue, with chapters that are addictive and involving. The characters are well elaborated as well as the dialogues and not to mention the actors who gave life to them, they did a great job of interpretation. One manages to be entertained by the cases, amazed by Holmes' methods and deductions and to connect with the characters and their emotions.

For me it is a series that has a little bit of everything, it makes us have fun, worry, be entertained and sometimes even cry, either because of the roller coaster of emotions or because you just don't want it to end. It's a story of mystery, intrigue, love, friendship, everything. They are the kind that stay in your heart.

So, yes, I recommend it a lot. ❤️

  4. 🎬 Sherlock and Elementary. What's your favorite screen adaptation? Review@weeklystats3278d

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson characters have been an inspiration for filmmakers and screenwriters for many decades . Yeah, inspiration...muses ... The thing is..if you want earn lots of money, use the popular characters). Gif source

Let's talk about three screen adaptations of books written by Conan Doyle.

    1. Elementary

American series of CBS channel was released in 2012. Elementary extended for season 6.

Starring actors Johnny Lee Miller and Lucy Lew.

Distinctive feature - Watson is a woman. Dr. Joan Watson was hired for Sherlock as a nurse and curator of sobriety.

    Ratings:

    IMDb 7.9 / 10

    Resume

I did not like the show at all. Sherlock Holmes is a hysterical addict. He is hysterical not because he is a genius, but simply because he is an as*hole. Yes, Sherlock should be like that, but everything is too hyperbolized in this show.

Elementary fits for watching between long interruptions of the show "Sherlock", if you are craving for this character. But can it be better to entertain yourself with other detectives?

A big plus of the plot in the absence of a love line. There is only a friendship between Watson and Sherlock. Such a promise was given by writers, but who knows where they will go for the sake of rating?

If you digress from the original story, then "Elementary" is a good detective series with a fairly strong story line. Just watching this show for 40 minutes and then forget about what we've just seen. The show can be viewed from any episode and you absolutely do not miss anything in the story.

The creators of the American version of Sherlock Holmes adventures took only the names, the main story lines of "Sherlock-Moriarty", "Sherlock-Irene Adler" and some character traits. At times, the logic of the chains which are built from murder to murderer is incomprehensible. Sherlock can determine by the smell of ashes the brand of cigarettes, the color of lipstick, and that the killer ate breakfast 3 years ago.

And Elementary is a glamorous version of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson - Joan Watson changes outfits almost every minute.

    2. Sherlock

Sherlock - a BBC TV series that started in 2010. This is one of the most popular TV series of our time.

Lucky am I. I didn't wait for years for new episodes, because I watched Sherlock for the first time last year).

But fans have to wait for 2-3 years for new season. It's all about the main actors busyness - Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. Although analyzing their work, it would be better if they were shot in Sherlock). While it is not known whether the TV series will be extended, but officially it is not closed.

Our days, London. The characters are completely in line with the book, but modern realities leave an imprint on the investigation - in addition to using deduction and analysis, Sherlock also uses Internet technologies.

In each season only for 3 episodes, but each of them is a masterpiece!

    Ratings:

    IMDb 9,2/10

    Resume:

How many words of praise written on the Internet! And how many fan sites discuss every minute of the episode, looking for clues and building incredible hypotheses.

Excellent acting, plot twists, incredible intrigue. I like how screenwriters up book game . Sherlock Holmes story really got new life. We still feel a connection with the classical, old story despite the action takes place in modern London.

"Sherlock" is a perfectly made and high-quality product of modernity. Does it have a "soul"? It's up to each viewer.

The fourth season isn't good, in my opinion. The motivation of the characters raised questions. Sometimes I would like to ask: "Guys, what's going on?", Where is that excellent logic and sense of common sense that guided you the previous 3 seasons?

Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman made an excellent tandem, so maybe it was hard for me to look "Elementary"?

Thanks for watching my review and staying with me till the end).

  5. Netflixing: Sherlock, Series 4@talanhorne3317d

You should have seen this one coming.

In case you can't deduce the subject of this review, today we are tackling series 4 of Sherlock, the BBC adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's detective stories that has taken the world by storm.

Has this latest installment lived up to the legacy of the show, or does it disrespect all that has come before it? You decide!

Ha ha, just kidding: I'll decide. I am the one writing this review, after all.

    Sherlock on Netflix

One thing I consistently have done, as part of my Netflixing miniseries, is sing the praises of Netflix as a platform and evangelize it to whoever will lend an ear. I am sick and tired of Broadcast Television. And the more I examine the subject, the more I see the cracks, the obsolescences of the medium. Why did we ever put up with it for so long? It is a mystery Sherlock Holmes himself probably could not solve.

That said, I cannot ignore the biggest flaw that Netflix, as a platform, exhibits in its current incarnation. And that is the delayed release of new episodes.

Because a ton of shows want to get a piece of that Netflix money. It's such a seductive fruit. Fewer and fewer TV series find themselves able to stay away.

But they still want to have it both ways. Change is terrifying---as terrifying as it is lucrative, and most shows are still under the delusion that Broadcast Television is the place to find legitimacy, even as the dying behemoth demands more and more of them. So they keep one foot on land while the other is at sea. The end is inevitable, but there are still those who put all their energy into delaying it.

As such, there is almost always a delay between the initial release of seasons on television and the time when they land on Netflix.

Which is unnerving if these are shows that you look forward to watching.

And it's doubly bad in the case of Sherlock, which always premieres first in the UK, then, after one delay, on public television here in the states, then, after another delay, on US Netflix. It's obscene.

But good things are worth waiting for, and what we have here, with series 4 of Sherlock, is a good thing.

    The Stories

As usual, series 4 consists of three feature-length episodes, following the adventures of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson as they attempt to unravel cases too perplexing for the police to solve, in a modern setting where terrorists, hackers, and rogue masterminds each challenge the famous detective in new and baffling ways.

I was unsure whether to include "The Abominable Bride" in my review of this series, since it is placed after the end of series 3. But the more I think about it, the more I am inclined to put that special episode into its own category, since it would be a distraction from series 4's close-knit continuity.

The end of series 3 saw Sherlock permanently banned from the British Isles on the order of his brother, Mycroft, only to be immediately summoned back as a new mystery threatens the safety of the entire country. This leads to yet another three-adventure cycle, giving us

    1. An introductory episode that raises the stakes and builds tension, stoking us for what is to come.
    2. A middle episode that poses more questions than answers, and is understandably a little less thrilling than the first or last episode in the run.
    3. An explosive conclusion that leaves us stunned and exasperated, as we ask ourselves over and over, "Well, how did they pull that off?"
So yeah, it's a typical season of Sherlock. Go figure. But it still has a lot to offer, as the plot thickens to the point where you can probably let people start playing 3-on-3 basketball on top of it.

    The Twists

As you have no doubt deduced, there are quite a few surprises in store for these three episodes. And it just isn't possible to review this series without addressing them.

Still, I have a very strict policy against spoilers. So instead of ruining anything for you, I'm going to focus on conclusions, not actual events. Think of this as a list of hints, if you will.

    • Something that happens in series 4 is going to be very sad.
    • Mycroft Holmes is a bigger monster than you ever suspected.
    • Andrew Scott is still in the cast as Moriarty, for some reason.
    • There will be a serial killer.
    • Someone's having a baby!
    • One of the murder victims is a child.
    • Mind games. Mind Games. MIND GAMES!
    • Sherlock and Watson are fighting again...
    • Somebody's in therapy.
    • An Aston-Martin makes an appearance, but James Bond does not.
    • The butler did it.
If the above list didn't answer any of your questions, good! It means that you're interested enough to actually watch the show, which you should because it's amazing.

I must say that I was intrigued by the way this series ended, as the final challenge faced by Sherlock and Watson was a much more personal, much more intimate mystery than the show has yielded so far. The showrunners took a big risk with this choice, and, in my opinion, it paid off many times over, with dividends.

    My Judgment

Look, it's Sherlock. It's not going to disappoint, even during those middle episodes of each series. If you haven't watch any of it, then Netflix is the ideal place to get started. They have all four series and every episode, including the seasonless special, "The Abominable Bride."

Watch it, and thank me later. You don't want to miss everything that series 4 has to offer.

    A Look to the Future

The show's future is uncertain right now. All the people who worked on it want it to continue, in some form or another, sometime down the road. But there are obligations to be met. Benedict Cumberbatch is now a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The writers and actors are in high demand in many venues. And the BBC has not renewed Sherlock for a 5th season.

Nevertheless, there are forces at work trying to make things happen. Could Sherlock become a Netflix-exclusive series? Could the show continue on the big screen? There are a lot of different theories flying around right now. Just be sure you watch all the episodes before doing your own research. I would hate for you to get spoiled.
