Although I had no idea of its existence until a couple of days ago, becoming familiar with the premise of "Sleepers" was enough to make me feel an absurd amount of curiosity about it.
The reason? Beyond a cast full of stars such as Dustin Hoffman, Robert De Niro or Brad Pitt, many viewers agreed (despite such divided criticism) that it is one of the crudest portraits of the loss of innocence that have been created within the confines of the seventh art.
In Sleepers we follow a group of rebellious boys who grew up hanging around the streets of New York during the 60s, they are idle, vulgar, but deep down they have a good heart, something very respectable if we take into account the shady environment that characterizes each one of their homes, where domestic violence and misogyny used to be the pretty standard.
The lives of these boys change when in the middle of a dirty joke they play to a hot dog vendor on the street, they end up seriously injuring an innocent pedestrian, as a consequence, they are sentenced to spend around two years in a juvenile prison.
From a substantial point of view, "Sleepers" has two very clear objectives: firs, it seeks to show us the horrible experiences that those kids had to live in this place as a product of a group of abusive guards... And on the other hand, it seeks to represent the effects that said physical, psychological and sexual abuse had in the long term as we are watching their adult lives unfold.
Despite the murky nature of its premise, Sleepers is characterized by a rather peculiar optimism, where revenge is represented with an unusual perspective, where it is inevitable to empathize with its protagonists regardless of the legal or moral wrongness of their actions. it doesn't bother to fall into absurd romanticisms and knows how to demonstrate genuine friendship all too skillfully.

It is a hard film to watch and in the end its messages can fall into the contradictory when we analyze their themes, but I greatly appreciate the way in which its own tragedy was handled, its script is great and although it may falter in a couple of sections, in general terms it is a very decent film.

Aunque no tenía la mínima idea de su existencia hasta hace un par de días, familiarizarme con la premisa de "Sleepers" bastó para crearme una cantidad absurda de curiosidad por ella.
¿La razón? Más allá de un cast plagado de estrellas como Dustin Hoffman, Robert De Niro o Brad Pitt, muchos espectadores coincidían (A pesar de las críticas tan divididas) en que es uno de los retratos más crudos sobre la perdida de la inocencia que se han creado dentro de los confines del séptimo arte.
En Sleepers seguimos a un grupo de chicos rebeldes que se criaron rondando en las calles de Nueva York durante los años 60s, son ociosos, vulgares, pero en el fondo tienen buen corazón, algo muy respetable si tomamos en cuenta el turbio ambiente que caracteriza cada uno de sus hogares, en dónde la violencia doméstica y el machismo solían ser el pan de cada día.
La vida de estos chicos cambia cuando en medio de una sucia broma que juegan a un vendedor de hot dogs en la calle, terminan hiriendo gravemente a un peatón inocente, como consecuencia, son condenados a pasar alrededor de dos años en una cárcel de menores de edad.
Desde un punto de vista sustancial "Sleepers" cuenta con dos objetivos muy claros, en primer lugar busca demostrarnos las horribles experiencias que tuvieron que vivir los jóvenes en este lugar como producto de un grupo de guardias abusadores... Y por otro lado busca representar los efectos que dicho maltrato físico, psicológico y sexual tuvo a largo plazo en la vida adulta de estos muchachos.
A pesar de lo turbio de su premisa Sleepers se caracteriza por un optimismo bastante peculiar, en dónde la venganza se representa con una óptica poco ordinaria en dónde es inevitable empatizar con sus protagonistas independientemente de lo legal o moralmente incorrecto de sus acciones. No se toma la molestia de caer en romanticismos absurdos y sabe demostrar una amistad genuina con demasiada habilidad.

Es una película muy dura de ver y al final sus mensajes pueden caer en lo contradictorio, pero valoro muchísimo la forma en la que se manejó su propia tragedia, su guión es estupendo y aunque puede flaquear en un par de secciones en general se trata de un film muy decente.
