Recently, due to a lack of new shows, we started watching Superman & Lois. I usually avoid cheap, licensed shows. If something looks cheap to me, I lose interest pretty quickly. However, I've heard positive reviews about it from both friends I talk to about DC Comics and YouTube content creators. It was even recommended to me twice on Hive. Besides, my partner and I have loved the DC universe since we were kids. We're not as familiar with the universe as my nerdy friends, but we've seen various animations, TV series, and movies our whole lives, so we recognize most of the themes explored in the show. I know Clark and Lois have children, but I'm not sure if the TV version is similar to the comic book versions. These and other things I haven't mentioned make for a truly solid and compelling show.
Everyone knows Superman. A Kryptonian, by definition, he's the most powerful being on Earth and one of the most powerful in the universe. His strength depends on the comic book you choose (which also depends on the authors, year of publication, and historical context, such as the AIDS epidemic, the World Trade Center attack, the war in Afghanistan, etc.), but if you consider Superman 1 to be the weakest version and Superman 10 to be the strongest, then Superman number 5 or 6 will definitely destroy Son Goku (another globally popular strongman). Furthermore, he's unkillable. He also has freezing breath, laser eyes, super stats, equally enhanced senses, and a few other skills. And if someone pushes him to the limit, he bathes in sunlight, achieving the form of Superman Prime One Million. Sounds like a recipe for a super warrior who enslaves Earth? This kind of thing only happens in Injustice or other Elseworlds (stories that use established characters and their universes to tell a story without the balance of canon). As Karol, my proofreader, likes to say, Superman is only believable as a character when he's a good boy scout. You can portray him differently, but then he loses an essential part of his character.
Before the film's premiere, I only knew Lois from stories. But hearing something and seeing something are often two completely different things. Lois is a badass, much like Bulma in Dragon Ball. She's not like many "strong and independent" female character archetypes. Sure, Lois, like any other person, can display a mischievous streak, but her strength stems from composure and strength of character. She's not afraid to ask tough questions, thus putting the other side to the wall. She doesn't possess superpowers except for her feminine senses—she can see through any man, inside and out, vertically and horizontally. Another aspect of her strength is her control over her daddy issues. General Lane wasn't a very good father. Quite often, such women end up more or less wounded (just like boys with similar problems), and only a few can "transform" this pain into strength that will propel them onto the path to a better life. We (my partner and I) really appreciate that husband and wife are equals. They form a community, and thus share joys and sorrows. While this isn't always an easy task, the creators managed to give both parents roughly equal time.
They also shared their children, Jonathan and Jordan. One has powers and is naturally drawn to his father, the other to his mother. He's calmer, can manage stress in any situation (Superman doesn't find this as easily as Lois), and has better communication skills. As is often the case in life, those with better social skills are favored by those around them. This is further fueled by social anxiety. This is one of the reasons Jordan feels inferior—he's less popular among his peers, and his parents treat him as weaker. All of this changes when his powers awaken one day. Jordan becomes braver, more vocal about his needs, and isn't as afraid as before. Jonathan, on the other hand, remains the same, cool-headed older brother. I like that the writers present both sides of the coin. I rarely see shows show both sides of an argument, or that one character's gain means another's loss. What's more, the creators consistently pursue this theme in subsequent seasons.
While watching Season 1, we often praised the cast of this series. It's supposedly a cheap comic book adaptation, so you might expect a less-than-impressive casting. Yes, I've seen better actors in these roles (Henry Cavill, Lois from the latest film), but these two have no reason to feel insecure. They're perfectly cast, and the chemistry between them is palpable. Not as strong as in 1923 or Gilded Age, but the mere fact that I'm even comparing the Kents to them is a credit to them. As in the aforementioned series, I don't see actors just doing their job, but a real, functioning family. Even General Lane, Lois's father, has his place in the story as a grandfather and father figure. Fortunately, he's not as often portrayed in the comics (as a military egghead, or in other words, a military concrete). He's principled and can be ruthless, but over time, these traits diminish to a healthy level. There were a few occasions when he was the only one who kept his composure. My partner, Asia, thought he was exaggerating a bit, and I said to her, "He's holding a large part of the Earth on his shoulders, and he's not Superman. Lane has to be like that, just like Superman has to be a polite boy scout who rarely gives way to aggression. A few times it was even funnier, when there was a multi-layered argument and Clark, Lane, and Lois were telling some truth, some wrong, and some lying. Ultimately, Lane ended up being a wonderfully likable grandfather, while still maintaining his presence of mind.
As for the plot, as you might imagine, we have the simple prose of life. The young people growing up, their first life experiences, their parents trying to cope with their not-always-wise decisions, etc. If it weren't for the fact that we're talking about a universe with metahumans, the series would probably be boring, after all, so many of them have been created. However, all it takes is a twist to change everything. Then even the most formulaic storylines become much more interesting. Robert Kirkman did the same in Invincible. Sure, I won't pretend, I only "listened" to some parts while looking at my phone, but there weren't many. A lot.
In contrast to these good scenes, I was often genuinely surprised by the script. It's evident in every character and relationship. They're complex, nuanced, sometimes internally conflicted, sometimes overly conservative, liberal... As is human nature. I don't usually talk about it, but in many shows, the dialogue and script are so... "Characterless." They blend into a big, shapeless mass. If they can maintain at least a decent level, I ignore it. This happens with revisions, and it happens in books too—if we over-correct imperfections, we can reach a point where an interesting script loses its character. Superman & Lois reminded me that you don't have to be a brilliant screenwriter like Taylor Sheridan to add color to a script. The conversations between mother and father are rich. We see multifaceted conflicts (between mom and dad, parents and children, Lane and Lois, etc.) that aren't fully resolved within the season; they just continue. I'm not just talking about the children, but also the adults. Especially Lois. I liked her; she's cut from a similar cloth as Beth from Yellowstone. They have a lot of similarities, and the only difference is their approach to various matters (which isn't a fundamental difference, as both women don't like to interfere in each other's lives, and aside from personal disagreements—Beth is more liberal, Lois more conservative—they wouldn't have many reasons to argue). Unless they started looking for something a little too hard.
Besides that, besides the slice-of-life atmosphere, we also have standard comic book storylines: Kryptonians, Lex Luthor and his armor, Superman's Fortress, multiverses, etc. Generally, it's standard; I recognize all these tropes from animation, listening to podcasts, talking to Ania, Karol, or other DC Comics fans. The plot of Season 1 is easy to summarize because it was written in the style of a typical comic book series. If you're unfamiliar with them, it's no big deal – structurally, they're similar to many sci-fi, fantasy, and anime series with similar themes. Superman lives, works, and copes with everyday life with his family. He meets Luthor in his armor, who tells him he'll betray people. With each subsequent episode, we learn new threads that come together, and we learn Luthor's secret.
I was often recommended to watch DC series, but I always declined. Expanding on what I said in the introduction, as a young teenager, I saw several cheap adaptations based on titles I liked. They disappointed me, but not just because of the effects, the small scale, or the little-known actors. I didn't believe it was possible to write an interesting story that would make me ignore the visuals. If only because studios like to limit the possibilities of spin-offs, which has happened several times with DC shows – for example, Suicide Squad was canceled on Arrow because the movie was a failure. In other words, I've oversimplified – the show's creator had to modify a storyline from one season because a movie was being made. As a result, we got a ruined season (and apparently the SS storyline was promising) and a bad movie. I was wrong, because the effects aren't that bad. Hell! Sometimes I was surprised by the creators' creativity. Some things might be cheap, but they don't look bad! In fact, aside from a few short scenes, most of the effects look a bit better than "well enough." That's perfectly sufficient, because our imagination fills in the rest. And yes, we feel like Superman has a real mess. Although the elements of the environment are made of plastic, the strength of the strongest man looks exceptionally believable.
Is it just me or does the soundtrack seem inspired by Man of Steel? Or at least a few tracks, because most of them completely stray from Snyder's "dark" universe. They emphasize the positivity emanating from the series. I listen to it with immense pleasure both on and off the show. I rarely encounter such a good soundtrack, even in more expensive series. We often hear songs from familiar artists from our world, while the original songs are often, in my opinion, worse written and performed than what I heard here. Even a big-budget film would be proud of these tracks. Dan Romer did a very good job.
I don't know any other shows from the DC TV universe. Can you recommend anything? I'd appreciate shows that are roughly on this level, not worse. As for S&L, I give it an 8/10. We wanted something to occupy our free time while waiting for the next episodes of Gilded Age, but we got so involved that we forgot about it. So far, we've started Season 3 (we finished Episode 3 or 4 two days ago) and haven't complained once. There's always something happening, if not with Clark, then with Lois or their children.

Jak coś wygląda dla mnie tanio, to tego dość szybko tracę zainteresowanie. Słyszałem jednak pozytywne opinie na jego temat zarówno od znajomych, z którymi rozmawiam o komiksach DC, jak i twórców contentu na YT. Nawet na Hive polecano mi ten serial dwukrotnie. Poza tym ja i moja partnerka lubimy świat DC od dziecka. Nie jesteśmy tak dobrze zaznajomieni z tym uniwersum, jak moi nerdowscy znajomi, ale przez całe życie widzieliśmy różne animacje, seriale, filmy, więc kojarzymy większość motywów poruszanych w serialu. Wiem, że Clark i Lois mają dzieci, ale nie wiem, czy serialowa wersja przypomina odpowiedniki z komiksów. Te i inne, niewymienione przeze mnie punkty, składają się na naprawdę solidny i atrakcyjny serial.
Supermana zna chyba każdy z Was. Kryptończyk, który z definicji jest najpotężniejszą istotą na Ziemi i jedną z najpotężniejszych we wszechświecie. Jego siła zależy od komiksu, jaki wybierzemy (na co dodatkowo składają się: autorzy, rok wydania, kontekst historyczny, jak np. epidemia AIDS, zamach na WTC, wojna w Afganistanie etc.), ale jeśli przyjąć 1 za najsłabszą wersję Supermana, a 10 za najsilniejszą, to Superman o numerze 5, a 6 to już na pewno, zniszczy Son Goku (inny siłacz o globalnej popularności). Dodatkowo nie da się go zabić. Ma też mrożący oddech, laser w oczach, super-statystyki, tak samo wzmocnione zmysły i jeszcze kilka innych skilli. A jak ktoś doprowadzi go do ostateczności, to idzie się wykąpać w Słońcu, dzięki czemu osiąga formę Superman Prime One Million. Brzmi jak przepis na super-wojownika, który zniewala Ziemię? Takie rzeczy to tylko w Injustice lub innych Elseworldach (historie wykorzystujące znane postacie i ich uniwersa, by przedstawić opowieść bez balansu w postaci kanonu). Jak lubi powtarzać Karol, mój korektor, Superman jest wiarygodny jako postać tylko wtedy, gdy jest grzecznym harcerzykiem. Można go przedstawić inaczej, ale wtedy traci swoją esencjonalną część charakteru.
Przed premierą filmu, znałem Lois tylko z opowiadań. Ale usłyszeć coś, a zobaczyć, to często dwa zupełnie inne tematy. Lois jest babą z jajami, podobnie jak Bulma w Dragon Ball. Nie jest taka, jak wiele "silnych i niezależnych" damskich archetypów postaci. Jasne, Lois jak każdy człowiek, potrafi pokazać złośliwy charakterek, ale jej moc wynika z opanowania i siły charakteru. Nie boi się zadawać trudnych pytań, stawiając tym samym drugą stronę pod ścianą. Nie posiada super mocy z wyjątkiem kobiecych zmysłów - potrafi prześwietlić każdego mężczyznę na wskroś, w poprzek, pionowo i poziomo. Inny aspekt pokazujący jej siłę, to zapanowanie nad swoimi daddy issues. Generał Lane nie był zbyt dobrym ojcem. Dość często takie kobiety kończą mniej lub bardziej poranione (tak jak chłopcy z podobnymi problemami) i tylko nieliczne potrafią "przerobić" ten ból na siłę, która pchnie je na ścieżkę ku lepszemu życiu. Bardzo podoba nam się to (mi i mojej partnerce), że mąż i żona są względem siebie równorzędni. Stanowią wspólnotę, a co za tym idzie, dzielą się radością, jak i smutkiem. Choć nie zawsze jest to łatwe zadanie, twórcom udało się dać mniej więcej tyle samo czasu obu rodzicom.
Podzielili się też dziećmi, Jonathanem i Jordanem. Jeden ma moce i naturalnie ciągnie go do ojca, drugi wdał się w matkę. Jest spokojniejszy, potrafi zapanować nad stresem w każdej sytuacji (Supermanowi nie przychodzi to tak łatwo, jak Lois) oraz ma lepsze umiejętności komunikacji. Jak to bywa w życiu, człowiek mający lepsze skille socjalne, jest faworyzowany przez otoczenie. Dodatkowo nakręca to fobia społeczna. M.in. dlatego Jordan czuje się gorszy - cieszy się mniejszą popularnością wśród rówieśniczek, rodzice traktują go jak słabszego. Wszystko to się zmienia, gdy pewnego dnia budzą się w nim moce. Jordan staje się odważniejszy, głośniej artykułuje swoje potrzeby oraz nie boi się tak jak wcześniej. Jonathan natomiast pozostał tym samym, starszym bratem z chłodną głową. Podoba mi się to, że scenarzyści przedstawiają obie strony medalu. Rzadko kiedy widzę, by seriale pokazywały obie strony sporu lub to, że zysk jednej postaci, oznacza stratę dla drugiej. Co więcej, twórcy konsekwentnie ciągną ten temat dalej w kolejnych sezonach.
W trakcie oglądania 1 sezonu, nie raz chwaliliśmy obsadę tego serialu. To niby tania adaptacja komiksu, więc można było się spodziewać niezbyt imponującego castingu. Tak, widziałem lepszych aktorów w tych rolach (Henry Cavill, Lois z najnowszego filmu), ale ci nie mają żadnego powodu do kompleksów. Zostali świetnie dobrani i czuć między nimi chemię. Nie tak mocną, jak w 1923 lub Gilded Age, ale sam fakt, że w ogóle porównuję parę Kentów do nich, stanowi nobilitację. Podobnie jak w w/w serialach, nie widzę aktorów, którzy przyszli zrobić swoją robotę, tylko prawdziwą, poprawnie funkcjonującą rodzinę. Nawet generał Lane, ojciec Lois, ma swoje miejsce w tej historii jako dziadek i ojciec. Na szczęście nie jest taki, jak go często pokazują w komiksach (jako jajogłowy wojskowy lub innymi słowy - beton wojskowy). Jest zasadniczy, bywa też bezwzględny, ale z czasem te cechy słabną do zdrowego poziomu. Parę razy było tak, że on jako jedyny zachowywał zimną krew. Moja partnerka, Asia, uznała że trochę przesadza, a ja mówię do niej: "On trzyma na barkach dużą część Ziemi, a nie jest Supermanem. Lane musi być taki być, tak jak Superman musi być grzecznym harcerzykiem, który bardzo rzadko daje upust agresji." Kilka razy było jeszcze zabawniej, gdy była wielowątkowa kłótnia i Clark, Lane i Lois mówili częściowo prawdę, częściowo mylili się, a częściowo kłamali. Ostatecznie Lane skończył jako przezajebiście sympatyczny dziadek, jednocześnie zachowując trzeźwość umysłu.
Jeśli chodzi o fabułę, to jak łatwo jest się domyślić, mamy tu po prostu prozę życia. Dorastanie młodych, ich pierwsze doświadczenia życiowe, rodzice którzy próbują sobie poradzić z ich nie zawsze mądrymi decyzjami etc. Gdyby nie fakt, że mówimy o uniwersum z meta ludźmi, serial pewnie byłby nudny, wszakże powstało ich tak wiele. Wystarczy jednak dodać do tego dodać jakiś aspekt, który zmieni wszystko. Wtedy nawet najbardziej schematyczne wątki stają się znacznie ciekawsze. To samo zrobił Robert Kirkman w swoim Invincible. Jasne, nie będę udawał, niektóre fragmenty jedynie "przesłuchałem" patrząc w telefon, ale nie było ich zbyt dużo.
W przeciwieństwie do tych dobrych scen, niejednokrotnie byłem autentycznie zaskoczony scenariuszem. Widać to po każdej postaci i relacji. Są rozbudowane, pełne niuansów, czasem wewnętrznie skonfliktowane, czasem zbyt konserwatywne, liberalne... Jak to u ludzi. Zwykle o tym nie mówię, ale w wielu serialach dialogi i scenariusz są takie... "Bez charakteru". Zlewają mi się w wielką, bezkształtną masę. Jeśli są w stanie utrzymać przynajmniej niezły poziom, ignoruję to. Tak się dzieje przy poprawkach i zdarza się to również w książkach - jeśli za bardzo poprawimy niedoskonałości, to możemy przekroczyć punkt, w którym ciekawy scenariusz traci swój charakter. Superman i Lois przypomniał mi, że nie trzeba być wybitnym scenarzystą, jak Taylor Sheridan, by nadać kolorytu scenariuszowi. Rozmowy między matką i ojcem są treściwe. Widzimy wielowymiarowe konflikty (na linii mama - tato, rodzice - dzieci, Lane - Lois etc.), które nie zostają w pełni rozwiązane w ramach tego sezonu, tylko są kontynuowane. Nie mówię tylko o dzieciach, ale też dorosłych. Zwłaszcza Lois. Polubiłem ją, jest ulepiona z podobnej gliny, co Beth z Yellowstone. Mają mnóstwo podobieństw, a różni je tylko podejście do różnych spraw (co nie jest zasadniczą różnicą, bo obie kobiety nie lubią wtrącać się w życia innych i pominąwszy personalną niezgodę, Beth jest bardziej liberalna, Lois konserwatywna, nie miałyby wielu powodów do kłótni). No chyba, że zaczęłyby szukać trochę na siłę.
Poza tym, oprócz klimatów slice of life, mamy też standardowe wątki rodem z komiksów. Kryptończycy, Lex Luthor i jego zbroja, Forteca Supermana, wieloświaty itd. Generalnie standard, kojarzę wszystkie te tropy z animacji, słuchania podcastów, rozmów z Anią, Karolem lub innymi miłośnikami komiksów DC. Fabuła 1 sezonu jest łatwa do streszczenia, bo została napisana w stylu zwykłej serii komiksowej. Jeśli ich nie znacie, to nic wielkiego - strukturalnie są podobne do wielu serii sci-fi, fantasy, anime o podobnej tematyce. Superman żyje, pracuje, radzi sobie z codziennością wraz z rodziną. Spotyka Luthora w swojej zbroi, który wmawia mu, że zdradzi ludzi. Z każdym kolejnym odcinkiem, poznajemy inne wątki, które łączą się w całość, a my poznajemy tajemnicę Luthora.
Często polecano mi obejrzeć seriale DC, ale za każdym razem odmawiałem. Rozwijając to co powiedziałem we wstępie, jako młody nastolatek zobaczyłem kilka tanich adaptacji, bazujących na lubianych przeze mnie tytułach. Rozczarowały mnie, ale nie tylko z uwagi na efekty, niewielką skalę, czy mało znanych aktorów. Nie wierzyłem, że można napisać ciekawą fabułę, która sprawi, że nie będę zwracał uwagi na aspekty wizualne. Choćby dlatego, że studia lubią ograniczać możliwości spin-offom, co zdarzyło się kilka w serialach DC - np. w Arrow usunięto Suicide Squad, bo wyszedł film, który był porażką. Inaczej, za bardzo streściłem - twórca serialu musiał zmodyfikować wątek z któregoś sezonu, gdyż zaczął powstawać film. W efekcie dostaliśmy popsuty sezon (a podobno wątek SS zapowiadał się naprawdę dobrze) oraz kiepski film. Pomyliłem się, bo efekty nie są takie złe. Ba! Czasami byłem zaskoczony kreatywnością twórców. Niby niektóre rzeczy są tanie, ale nie wyglądają źle! Prawdę powiedziawszy, pomijając kilka niedługich scen, większość efektów prezentuje się nieco lepiej niż "well enough". To w zupełności wystarcza, bo resztę dopowiada za nas wyobraźnia. I tak, czujemy, że Superman ma pierdolnięcie w łapie. Co prawda elementy otoczenia są wykonane z plastiku, ale mimo to siła najsilniejszego człowieka wypada wyjątkowo wiarygodnie.
Czy tylko mi się wydaje, że soundtrack był inspirowany filmem Man of Steel? A przynajmniej kilka utworów, bo większość totalnie odbiega klimatem od "mrocznego" uniwersum Snydera. Podkreślają pozytywność emanującą z tego serialu. Słucham go z olbrzymią przyjemnością zarówno w serialu, jak i poza nim. Rzadko kiedy spotykam się z tak dobrą ścieżką dźwiękową, nawet w tych droższych serialach. Często słyszymy w nich utwory znanego z naszego świata, podczas gdy autorskie utwory są często, wg mnie, gorzej napisane i zagrane niż to, co usłyszałem tutaj. Nawet wysokobudżetowy film nie powstydziłby się tych utworów. Dan Romer wykonał bardzo dobrą robotę.
Nie znam innych seriali z telewizyjnego uniwersum DC. Możecie mi coś polecić? Proszę o seriale na mniej więcej tym poziomie, nie słabsze. Jeśli chodzi o ocenę S&L, wystawiam mu 8/10. Chcieliśmy sobie czymś zapchać wolny czas w oczekiwaniu na kolejne odcinki Gilded Age, a zaangażowaliśmy się w niego tak bardzo, że zapomnieliśmy o nim. Na ten moment, zaczęliśmy S3 (2 dni temu skończyliśmy 3 lub 4 epizod) i ani razu nie narzekaliśmy. Ciągle coś się dzieje, jak nie z Clarkiem, to z Lois albo z ich dziećmi.
