  1. Adolescence: Might Just Be The Best Thing Since Sliced Bread@jhymi205d

There’s something about the right moment that isn’t talked about enough. Like, a particular dish coming out, or a particular song, and it becomes a trend, and you don’t try any of it, yet, but when you do, it feels like the most perfect time to have tried it.

Now, in this case, it’s a movie, and since about March, I heard about this movie, especially with all the claims that it’s a masterpiece. I have a long list of blockbusters that came out this year, which I haven’t seen, and promised to see, but I’ve not been able to get around to seeing any of them. Till Adolescence.

    Adolescence (2025)

This mini series written by Englishmen Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham, and directed by Philip Barintini, tells the story of 13 year old, Jamie Miller, a student who is arrested on charges of murder. The four episodes do not necessarily dwell on the detective side of things, since that isn’t the main aim of the story, but it analyzes the reasons and thought process behind the actions committed by teenagers in modern society.

    Thoughts and Rating

This series was jarring, from the first episode, all the way to the last. It began with a bang, and like none I’ve ever seen, sustained the intensity all the way till the end. I felt every emotion deeply, and for the life of me, I didn’t think I’d bawl this hard in any movie this year.

    1001793695.jpg

From the cinematic point of view, this series is a banger. It delivers from a one-shot perspective, which means that there are no cuts or edits, and each episode just runs from beginning to the end without interruption. I didn’t know how they managed that, but they did, and it was exceptional. It was particularly scintillating in the first episode with how it cut through the different casts and scenes in a way that showcased true cinematic mastery.

I guess I may not feel as much as a parent of teenagers watching this did, because this series is a punch to the gut by all means, and emotionally jarring, as well. But I did feel deeply about just how gruesome the effect of social media is on the impressionable minds of young teenagers. I never knew about the concept of ‘incel.’ I never knew so many things. But this movie opened doors to my mind, and I hope its teachings stay with me till I have kids of my own.

This may not be worthy of note, but I particular loved the accents. It crystallized the entire movie experience for me. I kept thinking to myself, surely they’re not always this polite, even with cussing. Surely an accent couldn’t be this beautiful that you feel each line this excruciatingly. I loved every moment.

I just realized that I didn’t talk about the acting. The cast that played Jamie Miller and Eddie Miller outdid themselves. Such finesse in role interpretation! Such beyond realistic delivery! It’s such a let down when you realize that you’re watching a movie because the actors are revealing that through subpar acting, but you see when actors embody their roles so superbly that you feel every emotion to your soul because of the depth of acting? It’s sublime. If I saw them—the cast, that is— I’d give a deep bow. They deserve their flowers. Every one of them.

This series is complex beyond words, and I realize now that there’s no way I can tell the way I felt with mere words. Each episode was a message. From the arrest to the school visit, to the episode with the psychologist, and finally, with Jamie’s family. I got the message loud and clear. I cried hard, but my goodness, I got the message. If the world were any fair, this series and its actors would get all the awards possible. For the life of me, this is the least of what they deserve for a movie like this.

I’m beyond humbled to have been a part of this movie by way of simply spectating, and I’m glad Netflix still has it in them to showcase true masterpiece. From the harrows and complexities of teenagehood to the saddening realization that a parent may not ever truly know their own child. If you’ve not seen Adolescence, please do. I can, with all boldness, say that it is the best thing since sliced bread. Maybe I would have liked to seen the true end with Jamie, but I wouldn’t change a thing, regardless. 10/10 across boards!

A great story told in only four chapters. I must confess that despite having seen some people talk about this series in this community I had not been attracted to it until my niece and some family members started talking about it at a party we attended, but after I started watching it and delving into its story I realized how truly valuable it is for the times we are living in now.

To put you in context I can only ask you to imagine the following scenario, no matter if you are a parent or not, just imagine that very early in the morning you receive the unpleasant intrusion of the police in your home, shouting orders and holding guns in hand, probably in the middle of the confusion you would think it is some kind of assault, but it is not, the police identify themselves as such and get straight to the point, they open the door to the room of one of your relatives and ask him to accompany them to the police station under arrest, as he is the only suspect of nothing more and nothing less than a heinous crime, the murder of a girl. How can this be possible? You can't believe that your relative has done such a thing, after all he lives in your house, he has grown up with you, you have never set a bad example but after all the police seem to have evidence or something.

There are many things to say about this series, but I'll start with one of the things that caught my attention from the beginning, and that is the format in which it was filmed, since they used the sequence shot, which means that each episode was filmed in a single take without cuts, this is a double-edged sword because although it can reduce costs and you don't need big budgets, it is extremely difficult because at the slightest mistake the whole take could be ruined and you would have to start from 0.

But the most relevant thing here is the story itself and the way it is told, when watching the series at the beginning you question what is happening and many questions arise in your mind. Was all that police paraphernalia really necessary to catch a thirteen-year-old boy who was sleeping peacefully in his bed? I mean, it is true that the police may have already had certain information that Jamie's parents (the protagonist) and we as the audience did not know, but I think they should have been more tactful, at least out of respect for the family. To top it all off, Jamie's reaction is tremendously shocking and manages to move us, it is what you would expect a young man his age to do when exposed to so much stress, cry, get scared, get confused, which leads me to recognize the great acting ability of Owen Cooper to interpret his character (Jamie)

    image.png

    Fuente

Another inevitable question also arises: Did Jamie really do it? But continuing within the framework of Owen Cooper's performance, it's surprising to see how he assumes a different attitude as he feels cornered. The character begins to change nuances in an astonishing way, becoming darker. It's as if, through the interrogations, we have dug into his personality until we discover his dark and sinister core. We see him scared, confused, sad, and later sarcastic, aggressive, and violent, but never repentant.

    image.png

But amidst all this, the most important questions of the entire series arise: Could his parents or those around him have prevented this? Why are adults, including the police, so unaware of what happens among young people? In fact, one of the police detectives literally had to get help from his teenage son for the investigation because he was unfamiliar with the terminology young people used, including the use of emojis. This leads me to think that the world is evolving tremendously quickly, and we must evolve with it as well. Parents should become more involved in their children's education and lives in general. It's not about invading their space or privacy, but rather imposing natural boundaries for people who don't have clear-cut criteria. Jamie's own parents comment on them at the end of the series: What was Jamie doing on the computer for so long? Who was he talking to? The internet is a double-edged sword where you can find both culture and valuable content as well as destruction, but you need to be fully involved and not assume your child will raise themselves. At the same time, schools are to blame for not monitoring their students, for not giving the issue of bullying the importance it deserves, and the police for not getting involved until it's too late.

In short, it's a series worthy of in-depth analysis. It's an invitation to reflect on a reality that's becoming increasingly apparent in our society, perhaps a wake-up call for us to begin living together more as a family instead of wasting so much time virtually on social media. Thank you very much for your attention; we'll see you next time, God willing.

How are you today? I am very well and very happy to be back in this community to tell you that I recently managed to watch a series that I really wanted to see and that had been recommended to me, which is really a miniseries that deals with a very peculiar crime that gives us the other side of the coin in certain aspects when there are these types of situations. Without further ado, I want to talk about the Netflix teen series, which has 4 episodes to date.

    Adolescencia: resumen

Jaime is a 13 year old teenager, who is going through a complicated stage of life, adolescence. From the beginning of the series we are given the context that this teenager, apparently for no reason, had done a horrific act, which was not to take someone's life. At the beginning we are not given many reasons or evidence, but little by little we are shown different images and videos where it is clear that this boy committed this atrocious crime against a classmate. Eddy and Manda Miller are the parents of this boy, who are very disconcerted by this situation and panic, without finding real reasons why their son did such an act.

As the series progresses, we meet other very relevant characters in the plot, such as Jaime's sister and school friends. Although it may not seem like it, these guys are more than expected and are key to find things like different evidence to prove Jaime's responsibility on this case and also the murder weapon. On the other hand, as the series progresses, Jaime starts to give quite concise and strange statements for his age, which makes us think, in some moments, that he is not really the murderer and that he is taking responsibility.

lThis fairly short series, which we do not know if it will be releasing more chapters, has given much to talk about thanks to different reasons, one of them is how we see that for the first time we have a case where the family is not really bad there was no abuse parents were loving, but just let us see how sometimes such situations are not entirely to blame for the environment where that person grows up. In the case of this series, they let us see how the overexposure this boy had to social networks and internet forums with people they did not know could easily lead him to end up doing this atrocious action.

Something that I liked a lot is that it is not the typical series to watch and hang out without thinking about it from the first moment immerses you in an oppressive atmosphere, where uncertainty, distrust permeate everything. Obviously, the accusation against Jaime, is the spark that causes everything and from here we see how the boy's environment develops, that is, the family and the community that from the beginning seems very normal until you start to crumble and blame each other. Something I liked is that from the beginning you get fully into everything that happens, is to tell you that they tell everything that has been seen and how it happened without giving many details for the duration of the series, go putting those little details that give you more context as to why things happen.

Something I loved is that the family dynamic in this series is very normal. You can tell that the parents are super loving and caring with their children, who they raised with the best values they could. They tried to give them everything and that is why they gave them free access to the internet without expecting the crude reality that exists on the internet for children. Here we see the desperation of a father who struggled to believe his son's innocence against all the doubts and the anguish of a mother trying to maintain the family unit while being shocked by the possibility, eating them up inside. All the interactions between the families are charged with attention and eloquent silences, conveying the fragility of a bond that was thought to be unbreakable. From the beginning they are a very normal family trying to raise their children as best they can and wonder why with Jaime and things happened this way while with his sister they were all very normal.

Talking a little more about Jaime's friends is another very strong point of the series, since here there were unbreakable bonds with friends of years that gradually fell apart because of everything that happened, obviously seeking to save themselves. It seemed that somehow small sides are being created and grudges, problems and a lot of uncertainty arise from the simple questions of whether there are allies or accomplices of this crime that resonates throughout the institute.

Another very important world is the whole police investigation that takes place where the aim is to find an objective truth in a bar of subjective perceptions and emotions to the surface, however, even the detective is greatly influenced by the atmosphere of distrust and by the secrets that gradually come to light. Each testimony and each new clue, instead of clarifying everything that happens here, seems to complicate things even more, showing us a rather elusive truth and how prejudices can cloud even the most impartial gaze.

One of the aspects that resonated most with this series is that there are no easy answers and there are no black and whites. We really know from everything that happened here that Jaime is the perpetrator of this crime, but we never really understand what it was that led him to this. An easy explanation we could give him is that the bad friends Jaime had, thanks to the internet, led him to this, but is that the whole reason? Isn't there more to it? What makes him different from other teenagers who also use the internet in the same way? For me, the answer is quite simple, Evidently this boy suffers from bullying in his school, which aggravated all his thoughts and made him create a very insecure personality where he believed to be the lowest link in the chain of the whole society. I am not saying that this is the main reason, but it is a very important reason to take into account to understand a little more about why things happened.

Also, they did a very good job here with the rather bleak photography, the haunting soundtrack and overall the amazing footage they managed to get. Thanks to the same manages to feel the attention in every scene in every look in every silence the series does not seek an easy effect, but takes its time to develop the characters explore the subtlety of their reactions which makes the story even more complacent and credible annexing a style of recording that helps you to enter more into it.

Something that was incredible for me and I found it a super important fact to know this guy who in the real way is called Connor which is the protagonist of this series was his first time acting in such an important role and made it really incredible his performance was unique and really made you believe as a viewer that at times was not guilty, with his gifts of manipulation so relentless. This series invites you to reflect on the fragility of innocence, the weight, the suspicion and the devastating consequences that can be unleashed when a trust is broken. Personally, I hope there will be more episodes of this incredible series so that we can learn a little more of everything that goes on behind the scenes of this story.

I watched the show almost as soon as it came out, without knowing anything at all about the plot. In its violent opening, the director makes sure to lay down the fundamental premise for the protagonist: a scared 13-year-old boy who wakes up in his childhood bedroom and wets himself. The forceful police presence stands in contrast to the obedient parents trying to protect the illusion of family peace. The mother cries and wails, but she’s also the calm one, making phone calls to ensure their home is okay. The father, on the other hand, shuffles around like a pitiful man trying to be tough—just as he’s expected to be.

When the police ask for blood samples, Jamie is afraid of needles, but the father encourages him by saying he’ll be watching. During the strip search, Jamie resists, saying “cause 2 guys will be looking at his bits.” It’s the first time the father almost hugs him—triggered by the fear that his son's masculinity might be compromised—while the child actually seems calm. The second time is when they watch the video of the crime; the father hugs him again, but probably only because he needs it.

At school, the kids are out of control. The teachers respond to teenage rebellion with more macho energy and yelling. You can almost feel that Jamie doesn’t really fit in there. The policeman’s son talks to him about incel culture and social media lingo, but Jamie doesn’t have the tools to understand—or care. He only goes along to gain his son’s superficial sympathy.

The third episode becomes the heart of the entire series. Jamie almost forgets where he is—he’s cheerful, flirty, mocking the psychologist with a fake “girly” voice. He opens up, lashes out, becomes violent—but he always, always tries to maintain control over her. For him, control translates to intimacy, and vice versa. The psychologist in front of him is a real girl—even though she’s much older—straight out of the Instagram posts he scrolls through daily. He examines her, consumes her, devours her energy voraciously—but he’s not interested in her, doesn’t ask her a single question. All that matters is what she does for him.

When he says he didn’t like Katie because she was flat-chested, he glances at the psychologist’s small chest and says “no offense”—as if criticism of the female body becomes another tool of control. He speaks easily about the women around him—his mom, his sister, Katie with her “funny girly” voice, the psychologist herself—but the dad is above critique, beyond consumption. He’s the one who holds power over Jamie, through indifference, shame, or violence. Men are simple and shallow “like the other bloke who doesn’t ask such weird questions.” Men get angry “normally,” and when they get really mad—“in a proper rager”—it’s funny and normal, not scary or strange. Men go to the pub, love football, and don’t hug each other—that’s weird. Men aren’t defined by what they do, but by the fact that they are not women. That’s why men don’t have female friends—only “mates.” Men consume women—as bodies, as images, as desire, as experience—online, in porn, at school, at work, in a simple conversation. But they don’t like women—only their validation, and what they do for them.

The hot chocolate with extra sprinkles that the psychologist offers—on one hand maternal, because she still believes in Jamie’s innocence, and on the other hand a hopeful Pavlovian experiment—gets twisted under toxic masculinity into another control element. Jamie asks for it again to reassure her of his “childlikeness” and to put her back in her place: the symbolic kitchen, the symbolic motherhood, under his control. But this time, she refuses.

The sandwich becomes the ultimate metaphor for his dynamic with Katie—and with women in general. He says he doesn’t like it, but he’ll keep it. He opens it, tears off part of the plastic wrapping, and sets it aside. When he remembers her rejection and gets angry—when things don’t go his way—he takes a bite, knowing he doesn’t like it, and tosses it aside again.

He insists he’s better than the other men who would have raped Katie if they had a knife—he’s the Nice Guy. He insists he wanted to do it, but didn’t. He insists he “did nothing wrong”—not that he didn’t do anything. He keeps desperately seeking the psychologist’s validation. She’s clearly sly and difficult too, just like the others—she tricked him into confessing what he did. She’s a bitch, like Katie, “a fucking queen,” who with one dismissive gesture reassures the guard that she’s not afraid of Jamie. And just like that, he loses control—the kind of control driven by fear.

He insists that he likes her—not like that, but as a person—even though he’s flirted with her and demands the same from her. The only question he ever asks the psychologist—the only thing that actually matters to him—is whether she likes him. He begs her to say he’s not ugly, because the only reason he opened up to her, the only reason he gave her his time, was to get something from her. When he doesn’t get it, he collapses under the weight of rejection and snaps.

In the empty room, the psychologist, out of habit or as a coping mechanism, mechanically goes to clean up the sandwich. She sees the bite, understands what it means, feels disgust—and instantly steps out of the robotic role she plays for society, for the men around her, for Jamie.

In the final scene—which, weirdly, moved so many parents—the father visits his son’s room. The teddy bear becomes the avatar of the missing child—the one who’s always been missing. Because the father was absent. Because he never accepted him. Because he was ashamed of him. It’s easy to cry over the teddy bear. Easy to cover it with a blanket. But no matter how much he cries or covers the replica, the real child will never come back. Because he was never hugged, never received love or acceptance from his father—no matter what lies the parents tell themselves. The boy found other symbolic father figures—in the manosphere, in social media, in the shouting teachers, in the rebellious classmates. All products of other violent or indifferent fathers and mothers.

As a man, woman, or parent, you don’t need a high IQ or deep cinematic knowledge to watch Adolescence—just a willingness for self-criticism and the courage to look yourself in the eye and ask: how do I contribute to this endless cesspool that poisons a 13-year-old with hatred and drives him to commit something he can barely even understand? What collective mistake did we make that someone like Tate—or anyone else who talks about women like they’re garbage—can become a joke or worse, a father figure, to boys, teens, and grown men?

  5. One-Shot, intense performances, and the hidden truth - My take on "Adolescence"@danielcarrerag456d

I've just finished the miniseries "Adolescence," and here are my thoughts. I don't usually review newly released series; since everyone's talking about them, I like to wait a few days. The hard part is avoiding spoilers. Plus, Netflix productions aren't usually great, but in the last two years, they've surprised me with their originals, and this time is no exception.

I think most people already know what the series is about: a boy kills a girl. He's 13, it's set in England, and I must say it's the most challenging English I've ever heard Man, did I struggle to understand it 😅! The series doesn't focus on proving the young boy's guilt, from the first episode, it's clear he did it, the real theme of the series is why he did it.

Everyone's talking about the impressive technical work the series demonstrates by being filmed in a single take. I admit it's very good; it's a challenge to film this way. Each episode isn't a series of chronological events; it's literally an hour of real-time within the events of the series. It's not that it's bad, but you have to watch moments that other productions wouldn't include, like driving from one place to another.

Other productions have used this one-shot technique successfully before; when implemented well, it can be spectacular. The ones I remember that seemed incredible to me are the film "1917," the "John Wick 4" fight in the three-story combat with multiple angle changes, and Matt Murdock's fight in the first season of "Daredevil" when he didn't have the suit yet. These last two are among my favorites because we know these kinds of shots can't have errors, and that's a real challenge in a fight.

The most notable one-shot in "Adolescence" is in the second episode when Detective Bascombe, after asking several questions at the high school, leaves with his son. Then we see Katie Jade's friend in a close-up, and then the shot changes to an aerial view with the help of a drone, which I learned from watching a behind-the-scenes feature, all the way to the place where Katie was killed. In the other episodes, the shots are simpler, like in the third, where 90% of it is the camera circling the interview room where the psychologist and Jamie talk.

As for the acting, I personally think only two stand out, perhaps because they're the two characters with the most screen time: Jamie Miller and psychologist Briony Ariston. Together, they star in a great scene that spans the entire third episode. I think young Owen Cooper did a wonderful job with the mood swings, going from being defensive to not letting the psychologist, just because she was a woman, control the conversation, and her staying calm and not showing fear of a 13-year-old's behavior.

As for the story, it's gaining a lot of relevance because it touches on a topic that has needed to be addressed for a long time and is overlooked in many places. The voices that have been rising for a while to talk about adolescent behavior, which is affected by the current world, are often not heard, don't go viral, and aren't given importance. What sells is tragedy and conflict, but prevention, good manners, and teaching principles aren't fun.

Stephen Graham, the co-creator of the series, who also plays Jamie's father, wrote this story after learning about two real-life cases where adolescents are killed for the same reasons the series exposes. The series isn't a police thriller to find a killer; rather, it's the discovery of why a young person is driven to kill. It addresses terms that are used in code in a digital world that seems hidden, which many don't know but need to know, to understand that young people are exposed to altered realities.

You might think that the terms and the digital world mentioned in the series' story don't reach your community, that it's more of an Anglo thing, but the truth is that every culture experiences similar problems. For example, the series mentions Andrew Tate, who became a male figure followed by many but who constantly made sexist, homophobic, and misogynistic comments, presenting an altered reality of what it means to be a man.

I wondered if something like this happens in my region, and I remembered that in a neighboring city, a young woman was killed by one of her classmates because of the envy she felt for her good grades. I also remembered that there are men who pretend to have conversations on social media denigrating others and how women despise men, as well as feminist groups pointing fingers where there are no guilty parties. Our adolescents are exposed to all this and more, and who knows what things they see and know that we don't.

In this aspect, I think the series is a success. It made me think about what the digital threats are in my region. It calls for reflection so that you start the conversation and begin to observe what the distortions of reality are that young people are exposed to, their "role models," and what perverse ideals they offer. The series also encourages closer relationships between parents and children to keep them away from these perverse things.

  6. Adolescence(2018) || A Heart-wrenching Coming Of Age Story@teknon465d

    IMG_3426.jpeg

It's traumatic to live in a home where your parents fight almost every day. I was feeling blue today, so I decided to let loose on TikTok. My For You Page (FYP) is literally all about movie recommendations, so when I came across a movie recommendation video, I decided to check the film out for myself. I was almost deterred from watching it because of its genre – drama/romance – but its low lighting and emotional tone drew me in from the start and boosted my interest.

    Synopsis

Adam (Mickey River) is a quiet, artistic teenager growing up in a dysfunctional home. His life takes a bad turn when he meets Alice (India Eisley), a pretty and free-spirited teenager who introduces him to a world of drugs, reckless living and toxic love. Adam, who had been waiting all his life to bag a pretty girl falls deeply in love with her and even deeper into her chaotic lifestyle. His new lifestyle of doing drugs crumbles his relationships with his family and best friend Keith (Romeo Miller).

Will he be able to rediscover himself and fix those relationships?

    Review and Rating

    IMG_3425.jpeg

One thing about this movie is that it is an emotionally charged film and it doesn’t shy away from depicting the harsh realities of addiction and toxic relationships although I found these depictions very disturbing. I didn’t like Mickey River’s character. I felt he was too timid and vulnerable but thinking about it deep enough it must have stemmed from the kind of home he grew up in. India Eisley, on the other hand, shines as Alice. I admired her from the first introduction of her character as really portrayed the character’s pain and self-destructive tendencies with intensity and depth.

    IMG_3424.jpeg

The film’s cinematography which got me glued from start, not my fault, I’m used to watching thrillers effectively mirrors Adam’s emotional state. It shifts from soft, warm tones in moments of hope to dark, gritty visuals as his world gets out of control. The soundtrack also complements the film’s tone. It just immerses you into Adam’s world.

How can I forget Keith(Romeo Miller). He plays the friendship role very well. His character had me wishing for a genuine friend like him.

    IMG_3445.jpeg

This film is somewhat didactic if looked beyond its surface. It does an excellent job of highlighting the dangers of addiction and codependency. It is a heart wrenching coming-of-age story that beautifully captures the highs and lows of first love and youthful recklessness. A very compelling watch.

I actually do recommend it. Not suitable for viewers under 16.

    Rating: 4/5
