This film by Sean Baker was also well received. It did well at the New York Critics Circle, winning two awards, directing and supporting actor. It received a nomination in different awards in that category of supporting actor for the great William Dafoe, where he played Bobby, the manager of a Motel located in Florida, especially in the vicinity of the Disney Amusement Park.
Sean Baker offers us another story with marginalized characters. Another chronicle of the average American that we don't see in the blockbusters. He also focuses his story on the side not seen by tourists who visit these amazing attractions with their families and stay in hotels where there are more amenities and beautiful views.
On the outskirts of that place, there are the motels where all kinds of people stay, especially those who don't have money for something better. Some spend the summer, living from day to day, others with jobs, also those who make a living with what comes out, because the crisis affects everyone and the famous American dream is not within everyone's reach.
The filmmaker composes a cast at the service of the story, with child protagonists that can be a little unbearable at the beginning, which causes us to get into the film to give them a slap on the wrist for their antics that are becoming more and more, but at the same time maintain their innocence. At times they are oblivious to the external dangers that may lie in wait for them, absorbed in their games and pranks, in the midst of the shit that has befallen them.

Sean Baker nos ofrece otra historia con personajes marginados. Otra crónica del americano medio que no vemos en las superproducciones. También centra su historia en el lado que no ven los turistas que visitan estas increíbles atracciones con sus familias y se alojan en hoteles donde hay más comodidades y hermosas vistas.
En las afueras de ese lugar, están los moteles donde se aloja todo tipo de gente, sobre todo los que no tienen dinero para algo mejor. Unos pasan el verano, viviendo al día, otros con trabajos, también los que se ganan la vida con lo que sale, porque la crisis afecta a todos y el famoso sueño americano no está al alcance de todos.
El cineasta compone un reparto al servicio de la historia, con protagonistas infantiles que pueden resultar un poco insoportables al inicio, lo que provoca meternos en el film para darles un tirón de orejas por sus payasadas que cada vez van a más, pero a la vez mantienen su inocencia. A veces son ajenos a los peligros externos que les pueden acechar, absortos en sus juegos y travesuras, en medio de la mierda que les ha tocado vivir.
The plot can give the impression of not having a defined path. It is a succession of things, of daily events, of the daily life of the children, of their families, of Bobby. A whole world apart, but that coexists with the world of the great fantasies that dazzle all those who visit it, because while tourists are enraptured by the incredible parks that are part of the illusion of thousands of families, those who live around them can only deal with simpler things.
The more the minutes passed, the more I was spellbound by his images. Baker has a talent for making an ugly place convey beauty. He also gets very natural performances, making his characters seem very human. When we have already been offered funny moments and situations, the final part arrives, where the ice cream we have been enjoying, as children do when they share ice cream, melts, confronting us with reality and with a final sequence that will make us cry.
The performance of Brooklynn Prince, who plays the child Moonee, is fantastic, especially in the final sequence. Bria Vinaite also makes a solid portrayal of a woman to whom life does not seem to have smiled, Halley is her character and that summer she manages to sell trinkets to tourists at the doors of hotels, as long as she is not discovered, but everything will be complicated and selling her body will be the only quick option to continue subsisting. Here again Baker enters the subject of sex workers.
Willeam Defoe, as always, stands out as Bobby, a good person who must deal with the problems of the Motel on a daily basis and although he cares about Moonee, Halley and the other children, he knows that there are things that are out of his reach and that life is extremely unfair.

La trama puede dar la impresión de no tener un camino definido. Es una sucesión de cosas, de acontecimientos cotidianos, de la vida diaria de los niños, de sus familias, de Bobby. Todo un mundo aparte, pero que convive con el mundo de las grandes fantasías que deslumbran a todos los que lo visitan, porque mientras los turistas se quedan embelesados con los increíbles parques que forman parte de la ilusión de miles de familias, los que viven a su alrededor, sólo pueden enfrentarse a cosas más sencillas.
Cuanto más pasaban los minutos, más me hechizaban sus imágenes. Baker tiene talento para hacer que un lugar feo transmita belleza. También consigue interpretaciones muy naturales, haciendo que sus personajes parezcan muy humanos. Cuando ya nos han ofrecido momentos y situaciones divertidas, llega la parte final, donde el helado que hemos estado disfrutando, como hacen los niños cuando comparten helado, se derrite, enfrentándonos a la realidad y con una secuencia final que nos hará llorar.
La actuación de Brooklynn Prince, que interpreta a la niña Moonee, es fantástica, especialmente en la secuencia final. Bria Vinaite también hace un sólido retrato de una mujer a la que la vida no parece haberle sonreído, Halley es su personaje y ese verano se las ingenia para vender baratijas a los turistas a las puertas de los hoteles, con tal de no ser descubierta, pero todo se complicará y vender su cuerpo será la única opción rápida para seguir subsistiendo. Aquí de nuevo Baker entra en el tema de las trabajadoras del sexo.
Willeam Dafoe, como siempre, destaca como Bobby, una buena persona que debe lidiar a diario con los problemas del Motel y que aunque se preocupa por Moonee, Halley y los demás niños, sabe que hay cosas que están fuera de su alcance y que la vida es sumamente injusta.
