I have always liked medieval movies no matter what their culture and environment, so when I saw the ad on Netflix about this production called "The Great Wall" instantly caught my attention, it is a film that was produced 7 years ago but I had not seen it until today, perhaps because I am not very fond of movies where Matt Damon appears, but this time despite the low criticism that surrounds it I was not disappointed.
The film has as the center of its story the mythical and at the same time beautiful great wall of China, a structure that no matter where you look at it is impressive, there is based most of the combat but how it all starts, in the north of that place is Matt Damon who plays the role of Williams, a mercenary who along with his friends is dedicated to "trade" to survive, however he has not forgotten the use of weapons and thanks to that survives an attack in the middle of the night.
His friend Tovar is also unharmed and together they leave the place because of their pursuers, I must confess that until this point I almost stopped watching it, it is not a film that hooks immediately, surely that was one of its negative points when the film was released, but from that moment the development of the production begins to change favorably.
Once inside the walls they find themselves in a complicated situation because they brought a part of the body of the strange creature that attacked them, it turns out that this creature belongs to a mythical race known as the Tao Tei, now what are the Tao Tei? They are beasts that - as explained later in the plot - appear every 60 years to remind mankind how greedy they can be. These creatures are brutally ruthless but have a pattern of military behavior, they obey a chain of command where the queen of their species is the one who rules them, that makes her the target to destroy to end the invasion.
Siempre me han gustado las películas medievales sin importar cuál sea su cultura y entorno, así que cuando vi el aviso en Netflix acerca de esta producción llamada “La gran muralla” instantáneamente llamo mi atención, es una película que fue producida hace 7 años pero no la había visto hasta el día de hoy, quizás porque no soy muy amante de las películas donde aparece Matt Damon, pero en esta ocasión a pesar de la baja critica que la rodea no me decepciono.
La película tiene como centro de su historia la mítica y a su vez hermosa gran muralla china, una estructura que la mires por donde la mires no deja de ser impresionante, allí se basa la mayor parte del combate pero ¿Cómo empieza todo?, En el norte de dicho lugar se encuentra Matt Damon quien hace el papel de Williams, un mercenario que juntamente con sus amigos se dedica a “comerciar” para sobrevivir, sin embargo no ha olvidado el uso de las armas y gracias a eso sobrevive a un ataque en medio de la noche.
Su amigo Tovar también sale ileso y juntos se van del lugar a causa de sus perseguidores, debo confesar que hasta este punto casi dejo de verla, no es una película que enganche inmediatamente, seguramente ese fue uno de sus puntos negativos cuando se estrenó el film, pero a partir de ese momento el desarrollo de la producción comienza a cambiar favorablemente.
Una vez dentro de las murallas se encuentran en una situación complicada debido a que se trajeron una parte del cuerpo de la criatura extraña que los ataco, resulta que esa criatura pertenece a una raza mítica conocida como los Tao Tei, ahora bien ¿Qué son los Tao Tei? Son unas bestias que -más adelante se explica en la trama- aparecen cada 60 años para recordarle a la humanidad lo codiciosas que pueden ser. Estas criaturas son brutalmente despiadadas pero tienen un patrón de comportamiento militar, obedecen a una cadena de mando donde la reina de su especie es quien los gobierna, eso la convierte en el objetivo a destruir para acabar con la invasión.
The generals of the wall have a shogunate type armor, of those that the samurai wore at that time, and the whole Chinese environment obeys to that type of clothing, Williams and his friend totally incompatible in the place are retained and unfortunately for them they are with a situation of life or death, the first wave of the tao Tei tries to destroy the wall but they are stopped by the weaponry that there is which makes them return and change their plans.
After participating in the combat to protect their own lives, they are praised and received at the headquarters, where they establish a relationship with the generals but do not deviate from their own purpose, which is to get gunpowder and get out of there to sell it. As the plot develops Williams meets a Commander named Li, she talks to him on different occasions and shows him that they are very different people, but this is key in the film because it makes Williams begins to meditate on his own life, as he has killed, stolen and has never been loyal to anyone, typical of all mercenaries.
With that in mind his actions begin to change, but those of his friend Tovar do not, so they act totally opposite, only in the battlefield they are one due to the experience and journey they have together. Tovar plans to leave with another captive and the gunpowder while Williams wishes to stay and protect the wall and humanity in general.
The Tao Tei show signs of intelligence while humanity continues in their own greed, that makes the creatures stop attacking the wall and head towards the capital, so when they realize their plans they decide to pursue them in a suicide mission and it is there where they manage to defeat thanks to the actions of Williams and General Lin, thus being "heroes" and one of the few survivors of the attack.
Los generales de la muralla poseen una armadura tipo shogunato, de esas que vestían los samuráis en esa época, y todo el entorno chino obedece a ese tipo de vestiduras, Williams y su amigo totalmente incompatibles en el lugar son retenidos y desafortunadamente para ellos se encuentran con una situación de vida o muerte, la primera ola de los tao Tei intenta destruir la muralla pero son detenidos por el armamento que allí se tiene lo cual los hace regresar y cambiar sus planes.
Luego de participar en el combate para proteger su propia vida, son elogiados y recibidos en los cuarteles generales, allí entablan una relación con los generales pero no se apartan de su propio propósito, el cual es conseguir pólvora y largarse de allí para venderla. A medida que se desarrolla la trama Williams conoce a una Comandante de nombre Li, esta habla con él en diferentes ocasiones y le muestra que son personas muy diferentes, pero esto es clave en la película porque eso hace que Williams comience a meditar sobre su propia vida, como ha matado, robado y jamás ha sido leal a nadie, típico de todo mercenario.
Con eso en mente sus acciones comienzan a cambiar, pero las de su amigo Tovar no, por lo que actúan totalmente opuestos, solo en el campo de batalla son uno debido a la experiencia y recorrido que tienen juntos. Tovar planea irse con otro cautivo y la pólvora mientras que Williams desea quedarse a proteger la muralla y la humanidad en general.
Los Tao Tei muestran señales de inteligencia mientras que la humanidad sigue en su propia codicia, eso hace que las criaturas dejen de atacar la muralla y se dirijan hacia la capital, así que cuando se dan cuenta de sus planes deciden perseguirlos en una misión suicida y es allí donde logran vencer gracias a las acciones de Williams y la general Lin, siendo así “héroes” y uno de los pocos sobrevivientes al ataque.
**My final impressions / Mis impresiones finales**
The story as such is not bad it just lacks depth, I had to find out a bit about Chinese culture to know who those animals were and then I found out that they represent an "evil gluttonous being" that devours everything and is not satiated, hence their destructive behavior towards humans, but in the plot there is not much allusion to this, however it is an important point to understand the story.
Speaking a little about it, I like how the author metaphorically alludes to a judgment of humanity with these attacks, making us see that greed is really bad for the human heart, that's the most positive thing I could notice. One aspect that I loved apart from the costumes and the environment were the special effects and the choreography, it really shows a lot of how oriental people behave in contrast to western people, besides that the preparations and the order for each A1 class battle, even the Tao Tei army behaved in an exceptional way.
Finally and to conclude we have Matt Damon who is definitely not the best for action movies, his unorthodox movements are not at all showy and leaves much to be desired in the combat scenes, although he is "the most valuable" so to speak I would prefer to see someone else doing the fighting, the only thing I can highlight is the seriousness he gave to the character, this being one of his strongest points as an actor served to give balance to Williams, one of the heroes who saved humanity.
La historia como tal no es mala solo que carece de profundidad, tuve que averiguar un poco acerca de la cultura china para saber quiénes eran esos animales y entonces descubrí que representan un “ser maligno glotón” que devora todo y no se sacia, de allí su comportamiento destructivo hacia los humanos, pero en la trama no se hace mucha alusión a esto, sin embargo es un punto importante para entender la historia.
Hablando un poco de ella me gusta como el autor metafóricamente alude un juicio a la humanidad con estos ataques haciéndonos ver que la codicia es realmente mala para el corazón humano, eso es lo más positivo que pude notar. Un aspecto que me encanto aparte de las vestiduras y el entorno fueron los efectos especiales y la coreografía, de verdad que muestra mucho de cómo se comportan las personas orientales en contraste a los occidentales, además de eso las preparaciones y el orden para cada batalla de clase A1, incluso el ejército de los Tao Tei se comportaba de una forma excepcional.
Por último y para concluir tenemos a Matt Damon quien definitivamente no es el mejor para películas de acción, sus movimientos poco ortodoxos no son para nada vistosos y deja mucho que desear en las escenas de combate, aunque es “el más valioso” por decirlo de alguna manera preferiría ver a otro haciendo los combates, lo único que puedo resaltar es la seriedad que dio al personaje, siendo este uno de sus puntos más fuertes como actor sirvió para dar equilibrio a Williams, uno de los héroes que salvo a la humanidad.
