  1. The green knight: a good, immersive and strange adaptation (2021) Review [Eng - Esp]@stairway2heaven1592d

I remember very well that in the middle of last year, I saw a movie related to King Arthur called Excalibur (of which I made a post) and I really liked it a lot. I have said in previous posts and more when they are about this medieval theme, that I love Arthurian literature in many ways and how this is placed in the media, in this case in the recreational medium of film or movies and of course understanding the creative liberties taken by directors to change certain things according to the plot in question, taken on that specific literature, not to extend this matter too much, in that post about that movie the esteemed colleague @jcrodriguez suggested me to see the green knight movie, at the time I did not see it because I had other series and movies pending, but I wrote it down to my list of things to see for this year and just 2 days ago I saw the movie and the truth is that I liked it a lot.

There are many aspects in this film that certainly follow the poem, which was based and worth the redundancy is linked to the Arthurian literature, but this is something that I will talk with a little more detail to provide my opinion a little later, the film at first instance touches aspect where mainly the magic, illusion and especially the sense of honor and duty in this case of a knight of that era, will be tested by our protagonist on duty Sir Gawain, so ladies and gentlemen without further ado I bring you the green knight.

    Synopsis / Sinopsis

Our story focuses largely on the life of a young Gawain son of Morgause, which is the sister of King Arthur Pendraron, therefore Gawain would come to be his nephew, Arthur invites him to his castle along with his other knights of royalty at the round table, to decorate the young Gawain and invite him to be an official knight of the same, however from here the plot will change due to the presence of the green knight which will lead the young Gawain to undertake a journey to test his courage and honor as a knight as well as a man.

    Personal opinion / Opinión personal

Very well I would like to go part by part breaking down each aspect and theme linked to all this film as such, because if there were things that I really liked a lot and other very small trifles that not so much, but let's go part by part first let's start with the setting, personally I had no problems or discomfort from this specific section, as it reflects and represents what is lived at the time, we are talking about a medieval era in which in one way or another is present the magic and the participation of certain creatures, after all in the stories related to King Arthur and other characters, they have abilities or have contacts with other beings or places of this nature, so at the level of environment they represented it quite well in my opinion with all the aspects that characterize and represent it.

With respect to the plot, it could be said that it is represented as a classic version of a hero's journey, or an odyssey due to the long adventure through which our protagonist will have to go through, however, besides that it is strange, but not in a bad sense, it is just that at a narrative level many aspects such as magic and illusions are something that can really make it difficult for us to understand if what we perceive to some extent is real or not, but understanding and following the main focus of the journey of our protagonist Sir Gawain, these aspects can become somewhat confusing and I think that in this section it was very interesting how it was handled.

Regarding the characters, this film will take as main focus Sir Gawain the nephew of King Arthur eh son of his sister Morgause, which is received at the round table becoming one of the close knights of Arthur, however such a significant change will give the green knight that personally his design is great I liked a lot as well as what represents him in essence, Here and in other sections we can see the many facets of Gawain as a human being and also as a knight and we can see through his adventure and his personal life as he changes according to what happens in the adventure, as well as the weight of his adventure taking into account the great decision he made with his life and the burden it carries.

It is a film that has as I mentioned at the beginning of this post, slight changes and this is a very common factor when it is taken to develop or recreate either by film, series, or games characters or literary stories, will not always be the same and the modifications will be linked to the convenient indications of the director (in the case of film), which is not bad and is something that I enjoy seeing the vision of the same to such work and see that it transmits according to such changes, however here follows in essence what is represented in such poem of the knight to see and Sir Gawain, about some aspects that I did not like well perhaps it was that there was not so much participation or integration by other characters at the round table beyond and to some extent Arthur, but I understand that the focus in this case is if Gawain which I understand, it's just that I would have liked to see a little more of other characters.

Beyond all of the above, it is a movie that I highly recommend if you want to pass the time and give it patience because it has a duration of two hours is somewhat dense in certain aspects. So thank you for coming and reading this far I hope it has been a pleasant reading for you and without more to say until next time.

I haven't watched any medieval fantasy movie for quite a good while so it was a nice surprise for me to find out about this film and the intriguing epic story on which it is based, that of Sir Gawain.

I have always been interested in stories taking place in medieval settings. Maybe it was discovering the Age of Empires 2 videogame when I was just a kid or maybe it was the Lord of the Rings trilogy which I also watched when I was a kid, either way, stories with medieval kingdoms will usually have a good chance of being enjoyable for me. In fact, my favorite videogame of all time is Skyrim, which has medieval settings with a lot of fantasy.

Another one of the reasons why I decided to check this film out was its main actor, Dev Patel, who usually participates in great films especially if he plays the main role.

Main names associated with the film

The director and writer is David Lowery. This person has very extensive experience in the entertainment industry, and he usually writes the same productions where he works as a director. Some of the previous works where he worked as both writer and director are A Ghost Story, The Old Man & the Gun, Pete's Dragon, among many others.

As mentioned before, the main character is played by Dev Patel, who is a very popular actor and has worked in a lot of great films such as Lion, Slumdog Millionaire, and The Man Who Knew Infinity. In The Green Knight, he plays Sir Gawain, and the epic adventure he will have after the Green Knight visits them with a very strange game for Christmas.

Alicia Vikander will play a secondary character, Gawain's lover, but one that will appear in a lot of scenes throughout the movie. This actress also has a very successful career and has previously worked in Ex Machina, The Danish Girl, Tomb Raider, among several other films.

Another actor I was able to recognize and whose character will play a key role in Gawain's journey, is Joel Edgerton. He will play a lord and will be of great help during a period where Gawain is going through a lot of difficulties. I knew this actor for his role in The Great Gatsby, and he has also worked in The Gift, and Boy Erased.

The Man Who Knew Infinity.

    What was the movie about?

The movie is called the Green Knight, which is an important character, but the story is actually about Gawain. He is the nephew of the famous King Arthur, and so far he has only lived a very average life with little to no greatness.

King Arthur is fond of him so that's certainly a relief for Gawain but he realizes he should be doing something more with his life and should be striving to achieve greatness. That appears to be the main goal in his life.

Soon enough, while he is having a feast with the king and other important people from the kingdom, a strange being appears. It is like a human but his skin is more like a green trunk or rock. He doesn't have normal skin and is clearly some type of magical being.

He offers to anyone present a challenge that consists in landing a blow on him, winning his great huge ax for a year, and in the next year, they will have to visit him in the north in a green chapel to receive exactly the same blow they just gave him. While everyone was scared of accepting that challenge, Gawain sees this as an opportunity to finally do something great and he accepts the challenge.

He uses the sword from his uncle the king and makes a lethal blow to this strange being. After the blow, something surprising happens that confirms the magical nature of this being and makes it very clear that there will be no escape from this challenge. In 1 year, Gawain will have to receive exactly the same blow that he just landed on this being, with the main difference being that Gawain is just a human and doesn't have any magical nature.

The decision to accept this challenge increased his popularity in the kingdom but it didn't improve his mental health. He never stops worrying about what would happen the next year but he cannot back down because this would hurt his reputation.

My own screenshot | Mi propio pantallazo

One year after the visit of the Green Knight, Gawain begins his journey in search of the green chapel in the north and with the goal of finishing the challenge he accepted in the past. This journey is what the movie is really about. We will see him confronting his selfish nature in ways that he might not even realize. It will feel very surreal at times, and also very original.

He will find a ghost, a few dangerous bandits, and there was also a very beautiful scene with some mysterious giants. Despite the fact this film has a lot of fantasy elements, there wasn't really much action going on, and the main character never really participates in a single fight. He gets beaten up one time but there was really no fight whatsoever.

Most medieval fantasy films I can think of have a lot of fights but this one was different, it felt like a journey where Gawain was supposed to do some type of self-discovery or self-realization. Maybe that was what the Green Knight was looking to trigger but the film leaves a lot of things open to interpretation, even its ending will cause viewers to ask themselves a few questions.

The film had a lot of intriguing and original moments as Gawain was venturing in the woods looking for the green chapel, but it was also a very slow film. It could have had a faster pace and that would have made it an even cooler film.

How were the performance from the cast and the scenery?

The performances were all right, Dev Patel did a great job playing Gawain but I am not sure how faithful everything was to the original history because I never read it. The scenery was the best part of the film, we will see a lot of beautiful places as Gawain explores the woods to find the chapel. This film provided the coolest fantasy scenery I have seen in the past couple of years, and I even think there was wasted potential in some parts, such as the one with the giants which looked like very mysterious beings.

    Final thoughts

The Green Knight is a good fantasy film that's certainly worth the watch for fans of the genre. It has a slow pace and zero action scenes but it explores entertaining fantasy elements that result in a satisfactory story.

If you have watched the film, let me know what do you think about it.

    Thanks for reading!

  3. 'The Green Knight' by David Lowery Review: A tale on cowardice, adventure, and personal growth@namiks1724d

    the green knight.PNG

I saw snippets of David Lowery's 'The Green Knight' throughout its development, and while I typically try to avoid trailers and reading articles and reviews on films these days, I was compelled to know more by the beauty of the individual frames I was seeing. As the months went by, the film was finally released; a common sentiment I was seeing was that it was "too dark" or "slow and boring". While the first is a genuine criticism, I tend to void opinions that a film is too slow, and often consider it to be a filter.

Despite having no expectations of the film, and having forgotten about its release, I have been aware of David Lowery's skills as a director from his prior works of which I've rather enjoyed. He holds a very artistic style that is considerate and highly appealing visually; the slow, fragile approach to 'A Ghost Story', as well as the telling of a story of youth and embracing it into old age in 'The Old Man & the Gun' come to mind. His films, whether holding some elements of the supernatural, unrealistic, and now fantasy, speak of what it means to be human and the grounded, few emotions we have that force us forward.

    The Green Knight

In this film, adapted from a story from the late 14th century, Lowery takes on the emotion of cowardice, in which a knight takes upon the challenge of beheading the Green Knight who declares that the knight who accepts the offer and takes action, will also receive an equal blow one year later. The knight spends the year being hailed a hero, having established fame for being the one to behead the Green Knight, while having no consideration for the inevitable call to action he will face as the year draws to a close.

As the year does come to its end, the knight is reminded of his agreement with the Green Knight, a mystical being that now awaits him at the distant Green Chapel. For Gawain, our knight, his cowardice is finally displayed. Though he accepts that he must leave.

    A knight and his chivalry

    the green knight2.PNG

As is common of old tales, chivalry is a code to live by for knights. They're tested of their chivalry and only if they succeed during those tests are they considered to be a true knight. In Gawain's case, he may have the title of a knight, but has never been tested of his chivalry. His call to action to receive an equal blow from the Green Knight is precisely that test, however, Gawain is scared. A knight that has not seen a true challenge before, which becomes evident as he embarks on his travels to the Green Chapel.

The film displays this travel in a truly dreamlike stature. The cinematography is slow, it follows Gawain in long sequences of simplistic movements, and ones where we're fixed on his face, seeing his emotions and fears come to light as his travels result in smaller challenges he must overcome. In this supernatural world, it works excellently. The colours, the gentle music, and the ambience of it all look deeper into Gawain, showing just how out of his depth he really is.

Some of these smaller challenges as he travels being minor tests of chivalry: "Why would you ask me that? Why would you ever ask me that?" asks the ghost of a girl requesting that Gawain enter a pond to return her skull so that she may finally rest. Gawain asking moments before what she could possibly do for him in the event that he does retrieve her skull. We see similar moments throughout the film, where those who stumble into Gawain see the knight in his armour, but Gawain fails to uphold the reputation he receives.

    The growth of Gawain

    the green knight 4.PNG

As Gawain faces different challenges, we see him in a different way. The camera itself even reflects this with more appreciative angles of his character. We see his fear still, but an understanding of what he must do, and where he must go. There's growth in this adventure, he's finally discovering who he is, and what he is capable of. He is finally acting more as a knight should. The camera movements and the cuts have picked up in pace a bit more, he's know longer feeling the dread of what awaits ahead, but is actively searching for it.

The colours also begin to shift, as even his clothing is darkened and aged by his travels. A sign of maturity in his character. There's an advancement in the environment and its colours, too. The locations become more mystical, more beautiful but also seemingly more dangerous as he grows closer to his destination. This growth is excellently portrayed by actor Dev Patel, where he's fully capable of displaying these emotions and sense of mystery as his character searches for the discovery of the self.

Alongside David Lowery's truly beautiful imagery in this world he's created, the two have certainly created a very special film that is highly worth watching for the visuals alone, but fortunately, there's a narrative to go with it which is just perfected. Both respecting its source material from centuries prior and amplifying its tale of traditional values of chivalry and adventure.

088EACD0-B7BA-4BA5-B809-9FF8D2451D75.png zrodlo. Film można różnie interpretować, możemy się w nim doszukać odniesień do oszustw, do bycia prawym ( bądź starania się) do chęci zaistnienia. Każda scena wyprawy to mała aluzja do późniejszych wydarzeń.

5CF64AF2-2BDA-404A-A804-109B892B339F.jpeg zrodlo.

The Green Knight is a film full of references, but at the same time a film that creates a certain legend, it is a work that draws the viewer in not only with its unusually charming cinematography, but above all with the myth of fantasy combined with an interesting journey.

The movie has very nice cinematography, it's one of those movies where we can pause at a particular moment and it will look amazing as wallpaper in the screen.

The plot is a medieval myth about lying but chasing popularity. The Green Knight is an allegory of decay that spreads throughout the film, the work has a multitude of references, each scene is a reflection of something.

The protagonist, meeting certain obstacles on his way, does not even realize how much they bring into his life. The film is an extreme dream, where fantasy blends with myth, and scenes intermingle to create a veritable dance with death.

The film asks how much a person is willing to sacrifice to be famous, how much they are willing to do to get to the point of no return, and how much they are willing to teach to be remembered

The main character is Gawain, son of King Arthur's sister, always dreaming of being a knight, but when the day comes for him to sit at King Arthur's table and tell a story, he couldn't because nothing was happening in his life, until he meets the mysterious Green Knight, this one meeting will completely change his life, and the journey he will take will result in the most interesting story in history.

Gawain encounters all sorts of characters on his way, some positive, others very negative, his journey is strewn with constant bumps that only determine him to reach his destination.

Gawain is blindly fascinated by the expedition, despite several moments that clearly tell him to turn back, that this whole expedition will be bad. As far as the plot is concerned, we get a travel movie full of strange and even magical moments.

The finale, on the other hand, is a great culmination of the whole film, an intellectual summary that tells us directly what happened and what its outcome was. Gawain's journey takes him through hell with Dante's whip, he is constantly vigilant and constantly yearns to be a knight.

Hell is green here and not without reason because it is the color of decay as well as birth, which makes sense when you look at the whole production.

This is one of the best films of recent years and the best film about medieval times since of Macbeth. I recommend watching it and spending 2 hours for a feast for the eyes and mind. 9/10
