The Jackal

Hello #hivers friends of this beloved film community.

This weekend I want to bring to your memory and share with you all a film that is already a number of years old but that has lost none of its charm as a detective, thriller and suspense film.

I am referring to The Jackal, known in Spain simply as Chacal, with the stellar performances of Bruce Willis, who at the time was mainly dedicated to action films, before his career took a quieter pace, Richard Gere and Sidney Poitier.

Este fin de semana quiere traerles a la memoria y compartir con todos una película que tiene ya un cierto número de años pero que no ha perdido para nada su encanto como película policial, de intriga y de suspenso.

Me refiero a El Chacal, conocida en España simplemente con el nombre de Chacal, con las interpretaciones estelares de un Bruce Willis que en ese entonces se dedicaba preferentemente a las películas de acción, antes de que su carrera tomara ritmos más tranquilos, Richard Gere y Sidney Poitier.

In a way the film can be seen as a remake of The Day of the Jackal from 1973 directed by Fred Zinnemann and based on the celebrated book by Frederick Forsyth.

Although the plot overlaps in many respects between the two films, the protagonists (not the actors) are different. In The Day of the Jackal, the objective is to eliminate French President Charles de Gaulle.

In The Jackal, on the other hand, the objective, which is discovered in the final part of the film, is to kill the first lady of the American government, i.e. the wife of the President of the United States, and not the president as everyone thought.

En un cierto modo la película puede considerarse un remake de El Día del Chacal de 1973 dirigida por Fred Zinnemann y basada en el celebrado libro de Frederick Forsyth.

Aunque la trama coincide en muchos aspectos entre ambas películas los protagonistas (no los actores) son distintos. En El Dia del Chacal el objetivo es eliminar al presidente de Francia Charles de Gaulle.

En el Chacal en cambio el objetivo, que se descubre en la parte final del film, es matar a la primera dama del gobierno americano, es decir a la esposa del Presidente de los EE.UU y no al presidente como todos creían.

The plot begins far from the place of the final denouement, and enters into the meanderings of the Russian mafia.

In a joint action, FBI and Russian Interior Ministry forces raid the Russian mafia, with international links, and in the process the brother of the mafia boss is killed, and when he tries to shoot one of the American special agents, Carter Preston (played by Sidney Poitier), he is eliminated by the joint forces.

The boss of the mafia organisation, on learning of his brother's death, tries to take revenge at all costs and to do so he instructs his hitmen to find the best killer in the world.

After an intense search, the chosen one is El Chacal (played by Bruce Willis), a mysterious and infallible professional killer with a remarkable chameleon-like quality that allows him to change his identity often and go completely unnoticed.

The assignment is to kill two people - who are not shown to the viewer - and this is where the suspense begins: who are the intended victims?

Due to the importance of the assignment and the political relevance of the people to be killed, El Chacal asks for an exhorbitant sum of money: 70 million dollars because after fulfilling the contract he will have to disappear from circulation forever, they will be in many to hunt him down.

To identify the murderer and follow his tracks, the police begin to investigate his alleged collaborators in the past and find Isabella Zanconia, a Basque separatist who disappeared years ago, who has disappeared from circulation and with a false identity has formed a family.

The only way to try to locate her is her ex-boyfriend, a former IRA terrorist Declan Joseph Mulqueen (played by Ricard Gere) who is now locked up in prison.

Declan agrees to cooperate on the condition that Isabella is left out of the action. She agrees to reveal her identity so that the FBI can contact her only once and then leave her alone.

In reality, Declan and The Jackal know each other well and are not so different. The Jackal had once been hired to kill them both and had shot Isabella in the womb killing her unborn baby. Both have killed people and have been hired to do so. The difference is that El Chacal kills civilian targets, military, women or children, he has no scruples or conscience, while Declan does. His only targets have been military targets that threatened the organisation to which he belonged (IRA).

To be able to stop and eliminate the Jackal is also for Declan a kind of revenge.

And so it begins. Declan and the FBI track and follow in the Jackal's footsteps, which always end in failure; it is almost impossible to follow a kind of ghost that disappears at the last minute due to his tremendous capacity to mimic any character.

In the meantime, the Jackal kills a gunsmith who had procured him a super rifle to kill at a distance, a gay man who had been harbouring him with the intention of having sex with him and two agents who were looking for him, Valentina Koslova (played by Diane Venora) the Russian agent who was collaborating with the American forces and who had killed the brother of the mafia boss by saving the life of agent Carter Preston in the Moscow raid, and an FBI agent.

As the Jackal realises that Declan is following in his footsteps, he leaves him a video, giving him some clues as to who his future victim might be. It is then that the former IRA terrorist realises that the real target is not the President but his wife.

After having eliminated a police officer, dressed in his clothes and placed himself in a strategic position to shoot the First Lady (and this is where the viewer truly discovers who the killer's main target is) she is saved at the last minute by Preston and FBI agents who manage to discover a flash on the assassin's gun. They pounce on the First Lady, knock her down and the diapros are lost in the void.

The Jackal retreats when he is discovered, descends into the basement of the Met, takes a girl hostage and neutralises Declan.

However, Isabella, who had been following the events, arrives on the scene and manages to shoot the Jackal, saving the life of her ex-partner, who immediately saves her by shooting the undead mercenary several times.

A few days later, during the burial ceremony of the Jackal's remains in an anonymous grave, Preston and Declan meet, who, despite his help in the case, has not been granted a pardon.

Realising that there is only one chance to thank him for his involvement in the case, agent Preston leaves him alone for thirty minutes so that he can disappear. Only then will he declare him missing and the police will start looking for him.

La trama inicia lejos del lugar del desenlace final y se interna en los meandros de la mafia rusa.

En una acción conjunta fuerzas del FBI y del Ministerio del Interior ruso tienden una redada a la mafia de aquel país, con vínculos internacionales, y en la acción muere el hermano del boss mafioso que al intentar disparar contra uno de los agentes especiales americanos Carter Preston (interpretado por Sidney Poitier) es eliminado por las fuerzas conjuntas.

El jefe de la organización mafiosa al enterarse de la muerte de su hermano trata de vengarse a toda costa y para ello encarga a sus sicarios de buscar el mejor killer del mundo.

Luego de intensas búsquedas el elegido es El Chacal (interpretado por Bruce Willis), un misterioso e infalible asesino profesional con una notable cualidad camaleontistica que le permite cambiar identidad a menudo y pasar totalmente desapercibido.

El encargo es matar a dos personas -que no se muestran al espectador- y es aquí donde inicia el suspenso: quienes son las presuntas víctimas?

Debido a la importancia del encargo y a la relevancia política de las personas que debe asesinar El Chacal pide una suma exhorbitante de dinero: 70 millones de dólares porque luego de cumplir el contrato deberá desaparecer de la circulación porsiempre, serán en muchos a darle la caza.

Para identificar al asesino y seguir sus huellas la policía comienza a investigar sobre sus presuntos colaboradores en el pasado y encuentra a Isabella Zanconia una separatista vasca desaparecida hace años que ha desaparecido de la circulación y con una falsa identidad ha formado una familia.

La única via para tratar de ubicarla es su ex-novio un antiguo terrorista del IRA Declan Joseph Mulqueen (interpretado por Ricard Gere) que ahora está encerrado en la cárcel.

Declan acepta de colaborar con la condición de que Isabella sea dejada al margen de la acción. Acepta revelar su identidad para que el FBI la contacte una sola vez y luego la deje tranquila.

En realidad Declan y El Chacal se conocen bien y no son tan distintos. En una oportunidad El Chacal había sido contratado para asesinar a ambos y le había disparado en el vientre a Isabella matando al bebé que estaba por nacer. Ambos han asesinado personas y han sido contratados para ello. Con la diferencia que El Chacal asesina objetivos civiles, militares, mujeres o niños, no tiene escrúpulos ni conciencia, mientras que Declan si. Los suyos han solo objetivos militares que amenzaban la organización a la que pertenecía (IRA).

Poder detener y eliminar al Chacal es también para Declan una especie de venganza.

Y comienzan así. Declan y el FBI a rastrear y seguir los pasos del Chacal que siempre concluyen en un fracaso, es casi imposible seguir una especie de fantasma que desaperece a último momento por su tremenda capacidad de mimetizarse en cualquier personaje.

En el interin el Chacal asesina a un armero que le había procurado un super fusil para matar a distancia, a un gay que lo estaba alojamiento con la intención de tener relaciones con él y a dos agentes que lo estaban buscando, Valentina Koslova (interpretada por Diane Venora) el agente ruso que estaba colaborando con las fuerzas americanas y que matado al hermano del boss mafioso salvando la vida del agente Carter Preston en la redada de Moscú, y un agente del FBI.

Como el Chacal se da cuenta que quien sigue sus pasos es Declan le deja un video dejando algunas señales sobre quien puede ser la futura víctima. Ahí es donde el ex-terrorista de IRA se da cuenta que el verdadero objetivo no es el Presidente sino su esposa.

Luego de haber eliminado un agente de policía, haberse vestido con su ropa y ubicado en una posición estratégica para disparar a la primera dama (y aquí es verdaderamente donde el espectador descubre quien es el objetivo principal del killer) ésta es salvado a último momento por Preston y agentes del FBI que logran descubrir un destello en el arma del asesino. Se lanzan sobre la primera dama, la derriban y los diapros se pierden en el vacío.

El Chacal emprende la retirado al verse descubierto, baja al subsuelo de la metropolitana, toma como rehén a una chica y neutraliza a Declan.

Sin embargo Isabella, que había seguido las incidencias de lo acontecido llega al lugar y consigue disparar al Chacal, salvando la vida de su ex compañero, que inmediatamente la salva disparando varias veces al mercenario aún no muerto.

Días después durante la ceremonia de inhumación de los resto del Chacal en una tumba anónima se encuentran Preston y Declan a quien, no obstante su ayuda en el caso no le ha estado concedido el indulto.

Dándose cuenta que existe una sola posibilidad de agredecerle su participación en el caso el agente Preston lo deja solo durante treinta minutos para que pueda desaparecer. Solo entonces declarará su desaparición y la policía comenzará a buscarlo.

It is inevitable to compare this film with Jackal Days in which Edward Fox played the killer.

In this new version we find good action scenes (for example when Declan -Richard Gere- risks being crushed by two trains with good digital effects for that time, today they would be totally outdated with the steps made by technology), a bit of fun in the middle of the drama (for example the cameo of Larry King interviewing a fake First Lady), and the gags of the fat man hired by the assassin -played by Jack Black- known actor, musician and American comedian, and the gags of the fat man hired by the assassin - played by Jack Black, a well-known American actor, musician and comedian - to prepare the gun for him), and a Jackal - Bruce Willis - who, with his innate self-critical smile, never quite convinces as a fearsome, cold and implacable ice killer and merely changes his toupee every ten minutes.

In my humble opinion, a stellar cast like this one should have been better used and not confined to archetypes and rigid schemes that weigh them down and from which none of the actors wanted to break away.

Es inevitable comparar este film con los Días del Chacal en los que Edward Fox interpretaba al asesino.

En esta nueva versión encontramos buenas escenas de acción (por ejemplo cuando Declan -Richard Gere- se arriesga a ser aplastado por dos trenes con buenos efectos digitales para esa época, hoy serían totalmente anticuados con los pasos que hace la tecnología), un poco de diversión en medio del drama (por ejemplo el cameo de Larry King entrevistando a una falsa Primera Dama, y los gags del gordo contratado por el asesino -interpretado por Jack Black conocido actor, músico y cómico norteamericano, para prepararle el fusil), y un Chacal -Bruce Willis- que, con su innata sonrisa autocrítica, nunca convence del todo como temible asesino de hielo frío e implacable y se limita a cambiar de peluquín cada diez minutos.

En mi modesta opinión un reparto estelar como éste debería haber sido mejor aprovechado y n olimitarse a arquetipos y esquemas rígidos que pesan y de los cuáles ninguno de los actores se ha querido salir.
