In this tale of espionage and suspense, we follow Dominika Egorova, a Russian ballet dancer who is forced to join a training school for “red sparrows,” secret agents trained in the art of seduction and espionage.

When Dominika is recruited by the Russian intelligence agency to carry out covert missions, she enters a world of deception, betrayal and deadly danger.

In “Red Sparrow,” the plot unfolds with a mix of intrigue, manipulation and suspense, as Dominika finds herself caught in a web of international conspiracies and power plays where every move can be a matter of life and death.

Through tense dialogue, masterful espionage scenes and moments of intrigue and betrayal, the film plunges us into a murky, dark world where loyalty and cunning are indispensable weapons in the fight for survival.

With Jennifer Lawrence's captivating performance as Dominika, impeccable direction by Francis Lawrence and a cold and sophisticated setting, “Red Sparrow” transports us to a universe of secrets, lies and manipulations where truth is a precious commodity and trust is a luxury few can afford.

Through scenes of suspense, violence and redemption, the film invites us to reflect on the nature of power, loyalty and betrayal in a world where appearances are deceptive and alliances change in the blink of an eye.

    [Image](https://www.filmaffinity.com/ve/filmimages.php?movie_id=650565)

With an enveloping soundtrack, elegant cinematography and a script full of unexpected twists and surprises, “Red Sparrow” immerses us in a game of deception and double-dealing where each character hides their true motivations behind a mask of appearances.

Through moments of tension, manipulation and redemption, the film challenges us to question our own convictions and unravel the secrets hidden in the shadows.

Commercially, the film performed respectably, grossing over $151 million worldwide on a budget of $69 million.

  2. Insomniac Movie Marathon: Red Sparrow@rvgenaille2409d

Red Sparrow is a spy thriller and it is terrifying. Set in the post Cold War Russia, Jennifer Lawrence is Dominika Egorova, a ballerina who is ruined by an injury and forced into working for the Russian Intelligence service as a Sparrow, a seductress and secret agent.

She is sent after an American agent to uncover a mole. Lots of intrigue ensue and a lot of nastiness. image This is a fascinating film, not the least because Lawrence is fairly fearless in her performance as is Joel Edgerton as the American agent, Nate Nash.

I was completely hooked on the film. There were flaws (not the least a technical one with the lighting in certain scenes that I couldn’t be sure if it was a problem with my screen or in the movie) but overall I quite enjoyed the film and am thinking of seeking out the novel it is based on.

    worth the watch.

  6. Review Film: Red Sparrow (2018)@film-trail3028d

I feel obliged to stress first that the film is almost without action scenes for 138 minutes duration because I'm sure some viewers would think Red Sparrow is a spicy espionage action kind of Salt or Atomic Blonde. Just three times the main character involved a fistfight, where the latter involves many incisions of knives and blood splashes. Sometimes also (maybe 30 minutes), present scenes of torture or brutal killings are enough to give the shock. So if the absence of action is replaced by the game of mind is not a problem, Red Sparrow is the film for you, Jennifer Lawrence portrays Dominika Egorova, a Russian ballet dancer who was forced to spy as the condition of his uncle, Ivan Dimitrevich Egorov (Matthias Schoenaerts), before he is willing to help bear the economic needs of Dominica, including the cost of treatment of the mother's feet. Egorov is one of the top Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), although seeing the resemblance of his face, I would not be surprised if one-day Schoenaerts would "rise to the rank" portray Vladimir Putin.

"Red Sparrow". Once he and his colleagues are called. Secret agents who are good at manipulating the target mind based on an understanding of each individual's fundamental desires. Lawrence, despite his accent inconsistent performance, had a convincing, intimidating gaze and aura of intimidation, even when he was in the middle of a sensual moment. Likewise, Charlotte Rampling, head of the school where sparrows are trained that can easily make the guts around him shrink instantly, Dominican's main target is, Nate Nash (Joel Edgerton), a CIA agent who at the same time is also trying to infiltrate SVR. Then the battle of the minds of both parties dominates. Justin Haythe who wrote the script based on a novel titled the same masterpiece Jason Matthews good highlight the intrigue. The audience knows that both Dominica and Nate know each other's identities, and eventually they both reveal their true identity. Both seem to always speak the truth, but we know the fact is not the case. Who is lying? Who is deceived? Each interaction becomes a binding psychic battle.

Red Sparrow is the first film director Francis Lawrence after completing the Hunger Games franchise three years ago. Here, Lawrence carefully composed a sensuality that enabled the audience to hold his breath. Not cheap, because we can feel behind Dominica's courage to undress until it grips his pubic genitalia, there is a dark side, there is cruelty hidden. Every sensuality is always followed by death, blood, or hidden intentions, wrapped up in a timid game of patience from Lawrence.

The farther from the impression of cheap sensuality when the cinematography of Jo Willems's work is always to inject beautiful images for the film. Willems is able to "exploit" a row of property-settings and costumes that are often dominated by a glowing red colour. Whether representing nuances of sexy, brave, or Russian, surely these striking colours refresh the eyes when the ears are sometimes disturbed when hearing the Russian intelligence chiefs speak English using Jeremy Irons accent in particular. Surprisingly, Russian itself often used its character on several occasions. Well, you know Hollywood.

  7. Red Sparrow - Movie Review@coldsteem3031d

I have to admit, Red Sparrow looked appealing to me from the first trailer I saw. I was disappointed to see the film sitting below 7/10 on IMDb. I generally don't allow ratings to deter me from seeing a film that looks appealing unless the ratings are extremely low (as in Wrinkle in Time). I used my Moviepass to see Red Sparrow today at the matinee. I was left with mixed feelings about this film.

Dominika Egorova (Jennifer Lawrence) is an aspiring ballerina. Her uncle, Vanya (Matthias Schoenaerts) is a high ranking official with Russian intelligence. When Dominka's ballet career is cut short by injury, her uncle recruits her for a dangerous mission. When she witnesses a murder, she is marked for death. Her uncle intervenes, enrolling her in the elite Sparrow program that trains attractive young agents to use their allure to compromise officials and agents from other nations. It is a high stakes program that demands success. The alternative is death.

Dominika has a grudge, but she is also calculating. When she is assigned to extract the identity of a Russian mole from his CIA handler, Nate Nash (Joel Edgerton), Dominika hatches a plan of her own. She carefully orchestrates a series of sleight of hand to keep everyone guessing regarding her loyalties. Her mission appears compromised, but she manages to salvage the mission as part of her own broader plot. She plays her opponents with precision, executing a flawless strategy that protects the good guys while extracting revenge on a couple of bad ones.

Attempting to reduce a novel into a movie-length feature requires precision cutting. Justin Haythe created this screenplay from the Jason Matthews novel of the same name. I have not read the novel. But it is apparent that reducing this convoluted plot required some sacrifices. Even so, the film managed to run long at two hours and twenty minutes. A bit of extra cutting might have kept the pacing a bit more steady while reducing the marathon length a bit. The film suffered from having to create the back story before moving into a somewhat complicated series of events that really all needed to be included for the story to make sense. A sequel was commissioned, which should benefit from not having to provide the extensive foundation this one required. The plot was good, although a bit contrived. It had a nice plot twist that made the film worthwhile, but the ending dragged out a bit too long as well.

I like Jennifer Lawrence. She has been in some of my favorite films dating all the way back to Winter's Bone. She was excellent, providing the perfect complement of sexual intensity, intellect and confidence to infuse her character with credibility. Her accent seemed a bit off at times, but other than that, she was perfect for this role. Edgerton had good chemistry with Lawrence, but then, who wouldn't? But like Edgerton, he was solid. Cirian Hinds had a bit role. I didn't care for him in the role, as a high ranking Russian spy. Luckily it was a bit role. Schoenaerts was excellent as well. Just mildly creepy, but credible. Overall, the casting was decent, but could have been better. The accents were distracting at times.

As mentioned, Red Sparrow runs long at two hours, twenty minutes. It felt long, as well. The film received an R rating from the MPAA. It is well deserved. There is a rape scene early in the film that doesn't have much nudity. It is part of the overall story and did not feel gratuitous. But other nudity in the film did. And there was a decent amount. But worse than the nudity was some of the graphic violence that was brutal. There were some cringe-worthy moments that reached Saw violence levels. Torture, alcohol consumption, rape, language, graphic nudity, gore...I think they pretty much checked all the boxes with this one. It felt like it was sometimes meant for shock effect. It felt a bit overdone.

Red Sparrow is a decent film. It was long, with sluggish pacing, which I hope will be fixed in the sequel. I will probably see the sequel at the theater, in hopes that it will be leaner. This one ran a bit long, could have been cast a bit better and was gratuitous at times. But the plot was excellent with a nice twist at the end. The primary actors were excellent. Overall, this film didn't deliver what I expected, but was also not a disappointment. I found myself leaving the theater with mixed feeling and a bladder that was about to burst. This past year seems to have been the year of epic length films. I hope this is a trend that Hollywood soon abandons. 7/10.

  8. A Geeky Guy's Movie Guide to Red Sparrow (2018)@hanshotfirst3039d

Red Sparrow is terrible. Terrible. Terrible. Terrible.

*They took the "deceive" part very seriously. They deceived anyone in the audience who foolishly thought this might be worth their time.*

Please do not waste your time on this movie. I saw this movie on Thursday night and it was the biggest waste of my time since that one time I walked into the wrong theater and stared at a blank screen for two hours. Sitting through an in-service on the magical powers of practice for a second time would have been a better use of my time than watching this ridiculous piece of hot, smelly garbage. I am not even angry that I wasted my money seeing this in a "premium" theater. I can make more money. I can't make more time. That is gone forever.

By the way, I have never read any of the books. They may be awesome. If so, then the author should be furious about what has been done to his work.

I have three regrets concerning this movie:

    1. I went to see it.
    2. After approximately 30 minutes, I considered walking out... but I stayed.
    3. I didn't write this review sooner. (I will feel terrible if I could have prevented anyone from wasting their time on this raging dumpster fire.)

I don't even know where to begin with how much I hated this movie. Let's start with the title.

The movie is called Red Sparrow. However, it should have been called:

Watch Unpleasant Things Happen to Jennifer Lawrence for 139 Minutes.

This movie would be great if you hate despise Jennifer Lawrence. I don't mean just dislike her or you are annoyed by her, you must loathe the very sight of her. In order to provide some perspective, I can't stand Gwyneth Paltrow. My favorite scene involving her is when her head is in the box at the end of Seven. (I truly think it was her finest work.) That being said, I wouldn't even want to see Gwyneth suffer through what Jennifer Lawrence's character endured.

*I actually like Jennifer Lawrence. I don't want to watch horrible things happen to her. Except her "science oven" catching on fire. That was hilarious.*

That is basically what this movie is: unpleasant things happening to characters. It is a spy movie with no real mystery to solve. There is no suspense. There is no intrigue. Although they do try to slap on a twist at the end, it was so obvious that it had absolutely no impact on me or anyone else in the half empty theater. I think every member of the audience figured out the "twist' twenty minutes into the movie.

Instead of entertaining the audience with an interesting spy story or even cool action sequences, the creators of the film relied on graphic violence and sex. Both of which were incredibly unpleasant to watch. I do have to give the writers and directors a little credit for pulling off what I always thought would be impossible... they made me want to look away from a naked Jennifer Lawrence. Aside from one attempt at a "romantic" scene, the majority of the time, characters are either hurting or attempting to hurt Lawrence's character.

There is actually one scene that got my heart pounding for a moment. Jennifer Lawrence must hurry to open a drawer but it won't open. I'm not kidding. The one and only exciting scene in the entire movie involves the elite ballerina/spy's inability to open a drawer. (I won't spoil it by letting you know if the drawer opens or not.)

What is especially odd is that I believe the movie may have been attempting to be a love story. I wonder who exactly the creative team behind this turd thought would be the audience. I don't think there is a very large demographic of people who like unpleasant graphic violence mixed with romance. I'm pretty sure that market is already cornered by Fifty Shades of Grey.

Jennifer Lawrence's character isn't the only person that I feel bad for. You know who else I feel bad for? Real spies.

Red Sparrow is an insult to every real spy who has ever lived!

I don't know who is in charge of the International Spy Union (of course I don't, they are spies they aren't going to allow that information to go public) but whoever it is needs to organize a boycott of this insult to covert operatives... and anyone with a brain.

The entire premise of this movie is so absurd (and insulting to real spies) that it made it impossible to take seriously. Jennifer Lawrence plays an elite Russian ballerina named Dominika Egorova. Dominika lives with her mother who is suffering from some unexplained ailment that requires round-the-clock care. As the sole bread winner (who appears to be paid by the government rather than the theater), the ballerina needs to support herself and her mother while paying for the expensive medical care.

One night while performing, she very graphically suffers a horribly broken leg. She will never dance again. (Can we have a moment of silence for her dancing career?... Thank you very much). Because the Russian government is a horrible monster (more on this later) Dominika is in danger of losing her apartment and her mother's medical care. So of course, her only choice is to become an elite spy and assassin.

She is obviously very smart, young, gorgeous, and famous... yet she can find no other way to earn money? Ok I get that the Russians are monsters who would never allow her to get a job using her obviously brilliant brain (more on this later) but don't they have waitresses in Russia? How about housekeepers? Or even strippers? You don't think some rich guy would pay for a gorgeous, famous ballerina to be seen having dinner with him?

    I guess not.

But spies? Oh yeah! By far the most accessible career path for an ex-ballerina is elite spy.

Here is where the horrible insult comes. She seems to become an elite spy in about two weeks.

Apparently the training to become a ballerina perfectly translates to spying. Even though everyone else in her program has gone through extensive military training, Dominika "graduates" early and is placed into the field to solve the Russian government's biggest problem (aside from being monsters... more on this later).

*Even Boris and Natasha should be furious at these writers.*

I am pretty sure that was the moment when every real spy in the audience did a spit take and stormed out of the theater. Of course I can't be sure because they are spies and no one could see them. However, I'm pretty sure the 30 spies in the theater used their ballerina training to sneak out of the theater completely undetected.

Perhaps there is someone out there who can look past the ludicrous idea that a ballerina could become an elite operative in less than a month, but its not me... or anyone else in the theater. On the way out, several people were all laughing at that huge flaw.

As soon as she was sent into the field, I should have followed the spies' lead and left the theater. Sadly, I couldn't see them so I remained there... like an idiot.

I have heard through the grapevine that the Spy Union is actually picketing theaters (and rightfully so). If you see someone outside the theater in a trench-coat, or a very sexy woman who is way overdressed for a movie theater, or a guy/lady with an earpiece, or someone disguised as a mailbox, these are all spies who are protesting. Please wink at them and say "John has a long mustache" in support of their cause. Then go see anything else.

*This scene infuriated me... in 1984. Keep your commy hands off my meat like product!*

Now on to those Russian monsters. Every Russian person should join the spies (good luck finding them) in boycotting this movie. I have not seen a more laughably over-the-top portrayal of Russians as evil since the 1980s. I seriously would not have been surprised if they showed Ivan Drago and his corrupt management team as the leaders of the government. At one point I thought there might be an intermission during which the theater would show us a Duck and Cover film from the 1950s warning us of the impending attack by the evil Communist aggressors. Either this movie was purposely intended to be anti-Russian propaganda or the writers and director were freaking morons. Actually, I suspect it is both.

Perhaps I would have enjoyed this movie if it were released in 1984. First, the Cold War was still in full swing so the ridiculous, cartoonish, evil Russians would have made sense. Second, I would have been 13 years old so I would have been thrilled to see Jennifer Lawrence naked. Third, I would have been a teenager and teenagers are stupid (except for @hotrod). Fourth the use of a 3.5 inch floppy disk to store vital intelligence would have made sense.

As if wasting two and a half hours on this movie wasn't bad enough, when I returned home, I had to look up in what year the movie was set. Although the characters used smart phones, the "climax" of the movie centers around stolen intelligence stored on 3.5 inch floppy disks.

*Since most people reading this have never seen these relics, these are "floppy disks". You should not store top secret information on these.*

To my horror, the movie is supposed to be set in 2013 at the very earliest.

So I just watched a movie set in 2013 in which elite covert operatives store their most sensitive and valuable data on 3.5 inch floppy disks.

And you just read a review of a movie set in 2013 in which elite covert operatives store their most sensitive and valuable data on 3.5 inch floppy disks.

    I'm sorry.

  9. Movie Review: 'Red Sparrow' (2018)@showflix3040d

    source

Red Sparrow makes Jennifer Lawrence a spy and lethal Russian spy agency. I mean, the sex is lethal, not like Lorraine Broughton and Evelyn Salt who turn it off sexy. You will see many (or maybe no - thanks LSF) Lawrence body parts: back, chest, buttocks, etc., because the hot body does become his weapon. Through this film, I learned that there is another spectral world of spies other than those presented by James Bond and John le Carre movies; the universe contains the sour things that will make us wince.

Some say that people have 3 basic needs. However, spies have one more need, namely information. A spy will manipulate in order to obtain information by utilizing the needs of others against these 3 basic things. Lawrence's character in Red Sparrow takes advantage of the need for sex. In this case, the position of women is more profitable. It is easier for men to be tempted by women than to women seduced by men. Women become more effective spies than everyone in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy .

But before they had to be trained first in special schools. "Whore school" is the name given by Dominica (Lawrence) to the school. Please translate your own meaning. In this school, Dominica must forget his identity and self-esteem. The counselor ( Charlotte Rampling ) asserts that their bodies are state property. One of the curriculum requires students to engage in sexual interactions. Hold your horse, a flirty reader; this is not as fascinating as your fantasy. This activity is paraded in front of the class, often in an embarrassing context, to then be the subject of analysis.

So how does Dominica CAN go to school there? It turned out that the one who sent him was a high-ranking SVR spy agency, Vanya ( Matthias Schoenaerts ) who also deserved the Uncle Diteji's all-time charter. Which uncle tried to send his own nephew into "whore school"? From the beginning, he seemed to affirm that even to his family members he was being uncompromising. Or maybe he has another "motive"? Hmm.

How Dominica Wants to join is told through a brilliant opening chapter that successfully pumps our interest; narrative peak that can not be passed by the next film stage. While an American spy, Nate Nash ( Joel Edgerton ) does a spy (ya iyalaah) job, we see Dominican dancing ballet in a magnificent theater before ending a tragedy that breaks the foot. This accident kills his career and threatens his financial life. Uncle Vanya came and I would just say that the help given was not what Dominica had expected.

After graduation, Dominica was assigned to find out the identity of a betrayer who became an informant for Nate who is now drawn to Budapest because of an incident in Russia. For that, Dominica had to leave for Budapest and try to get close to Nate. Sounds cliche; we think we can guess that Nate will fall in love with Dominica or maybe vice versa. However, Nate is smarter than we think. He knows that Dominica is a spy and also not easily manipulated by sex. Very likely both of them cheat on each other.

The film is adapted from a novel titled the same work of Jason Matthews . No doubt his knowledge of the world of spies, because in the real world he is a former CIA agent. Maybe this is the real spy world. No big explosions or sophisticated equipment or acrobatic action sequences, but just an information game. For the shortest I remember, the only scene that required Lawrence to do a sequence that approached the action was when he danced ballet at the beginning of the movie.

Everyone seems to play a separate agenda unknown to others around them. Likewise with Dominica, which is difficult to predict the contents of his head because his expression that looks always numb. He danced with his position; the American agencies felt they could invite Dominica to their side to become double agents, while the Russian agency thought that everything Dominica did, including some odd things, was done in the interest of the mission. It was only at the last moment that we knew who Dominica was in favor, and this was not what I expected.

The film became the next collaboration between Jennifer Lawrence with director Francis Lawrence after the last 3 volumes of The Hunger Games . Here they do not hold back. If you missed the "21+" rating, I need to remind you that this movie is very mature. There are many scenes of abusive torture and sex. Lawrence the director seems to want his film taken seriously, but I get it every time Lawrence the actress throws a dialogue in a Russian-Russian accent, as if just learning English from Hotel Transylvania . Not to mention the fact that most of the Russian top brass is played by familiar British actors, such as Jeremy Irons and Ciaran Hinds .

This makes Red Sparrow too odd to take seriously but is too heavy to be considered an absurd movie. The film is like walking in an awkward line between wanting to be a realistic spy movie or a more mainstream dish. I can also imagine some spectators who would be saturated with the game of "whichever side" of the frequency. Characteristics of this film provoke us to always anticipate, but if the duration reaches 130 minutes, certainly feels boring. Nevertheless, I am quite enjoying the new approach of the spy world. I even swallowed the most absurd part of it.

  14. The Red Sparrow Trailer Has Arrived and it’s No What We’ve Been Waiting For@readingdanvers3209d

Yes, we’ve been promised a Black Widow origin story knockoff. This is the synopsis from IMDB: "Ballerina Dominika Egorova (Jennifer Lawrence) is recruited to 'Sparrow School' a Russian intelligence service where she is forced to use her body as a weapon. But her first mission, targeting a CIA agent (Joel Edgerton), threatens to unravel the security of both nations."

So they might as well be called Natasha Romanoff and Clint Barton.

But then the trailer came out today. Here is a link so you can watch it:

Let me tell you Scarlett Johansson can sleep peacefully at night, knowing that she is not part of this disaster. This is all murderous femme fatale and zero cool kicking ass. The ballerina dancing sequence is similar to that of Natasha Romanoff’s in Avengers: Age of Ultron, that’s the only similarity I found. Egorova doesn’t even look confident. I’m surprised Jennifer Lawrence even agreed to take this role. This may be directed by The Hunger Games director, Francis Lawrence, but Dominika Egorova is no Katniss Everdeen. We can find nothing inspiring about her, unlike most of the previous women Jennifer Lawrence choose to portray. The characters to me feels like a movie cliché from 10 years ago. Maybe the trailer is misleading (I didn’t read the book this is based on) and there is an interesting story in this movie and great characters. For now, it seems like I can guess what everyone will say and do in this movie.

The movie will come out in the U.S on March 2, 2018

Can I get my real Black Widow movie now please?
