  1. #REVIEW: “THE NIGHT CLERK” (EMPLEADO NOCTURNO) | CRÍTICA | OPINIÓN | [ENG-ESP]@bigcarrillo1924d

Drama and suspense always go hand in hand, but this time I don't know if they didn't know it or they let it go.

A few days ago I took a look at the movie THE NIGHT CLERK that caught my attention for its synopsis, but when I saw it it showed me something totally different from what I expected and without a doubt I think they lost a great opposition to doing something good that it could have caught the attention of many moviegoers.

When you watch a movie that promises suspense and drama in the same sentence beforehand, you can already imagine how intense it can get if it develops correctly, then what happens when things don't go as expected.

This movie has an interesting concept to begin with that encourages us to patiently follow the plot, waiting for a linear development that introduces us the first time and that we do not lose sight of its main characters. Which is perfect, since you can connect a little more and that way keep up no matter how slow or fast it may be at the beginning.

But with this film things start very well and then the main idea of the plot is completely lost, where they introduce situations that do not make sense and that only make the film somewhat slower than expected and in some cases it falls apart. By itself.

    WHAT IS THE MOVIE ABOUT?

We will meet a very intelligent young man named Bart Bromley played by (Tye Sheridan) in this opportunity he will play an autistic character, who works at night in a hotel.

Everything unfolds in a normal way, where we can see how this young man is doing basic things such as receiving guests, being on the lookout for security cameras, simple activities. But from the beginning of the film they show us that this boy hides something very big and that makes him the focus of attention.

We see how secretly and practically illegally, he hides cameras inside one of the hotel rooms where he spies on guests. This is disturbing at the beginning, we will also see a situation that gets out of control when a woman arrives at the hotel one night and is murdered.

This creates a confusing situation between Bart Bromley and the police who will try to solve this particular case. In the development of the film we will see the participation of the actress (Ana de Armas) who will give life to Andrea a woman who seems to hide a secret.

Andrea is a young woman who makes a connection with Bart, with whom she tries to create a one-night stand, but inadvertently emerges in a situation where either of them can get hurt .

I will leave it up to here so as not to delve too deeply into the plot and thus give those who have not yet seen it a chance to take a look at it, but I want to warn that from now on I will mark important points of what the film seemed to me in a deeper and more critical way with Spoilers.

    SPOILER ALERT…

    NOTHING NEW TO TELL

In the last 3 years I have noticed a lot how the films produced in Hollywood, continue to use the same formula and the same script that for more than 30 years It continues to be like a bible for the creation of films.

It is remarkable that within this film we continue to see the same formula of good and bad that apparently at first seems to paint well, but falls like a sack of potatoes. Unfortunately we see the same as in other movies, but told from another angle which can make it interesting, but it does not follow the expected rhythm and they go the safe way.

A common story, characters that are easy to forget, an expected ending, the only thing I can highlight about this film is the main idea where the protagonist at the beginning seemed to be the villain.

NOT EVERYTHING THAT SHINES IS NOT GOLD

When I read the synopsis and was able to observe the first 15 minutes of the film I felt that I would see something new with a background that would leave me hooked and wanting to see it again, of course having an autistic boy who hides video cameras inside the hotel rooms is something that can draw your attraction and look forward to what is going to happen in this unusual situation.

But when you realize that in the middle of the movie they give it a totally unnecessary twist that practically ruins what could be a movie with different ideas, it ends up being one more of the bunch who played it safe and still lives with it. magical dream that the good will always be the protagonist.

Maybe we are used to watching movies where good always wins and that's great, but this movie had the potential to do things differently and blow your mind off at the end. If you have not seen it yet, it may be difficult for you to understand what I am saying, but if you have already seen it you will understand my point.

LET'S TALK ABOUT THE GOOD AND THE BAD

Movies where drama and suspense are key to its development are usually very fast or slow depending on which direction you want to take, The Night Clerk has a slow pace that makes it easy to understand, but does not end to convince the most detailed or intense viewer when we refer to getting a plot that has contrast with what is shown at the beginning.

    Screenshot_20210322-132719.jpg

Highlight two points that seemed good to me in the film and two bad points that from my point of view made the film lose its charm and label it as just another movie of the lot.

    THE BAD

    • It lacks sense in its plot line, that is, in a few scenes we can see several situations that go in the same direction, but that do not leave anything to the main plot, making it predictable.

    • They did not take advantage of the main character Bart Bromley (Sheridan) who had the potential for the film to have more impact on the viewer, just showing it in one direction was not a good idea, since they could have played with the character and give it to the viewer that feeling of insecurity and doubts about whether Bart was the good or bad one and from the first minutes they reveal the direction that the film will take.

    Screenshot_20210322-133635.jpg

    Screenshot_20210322-133620.jpg

    THE GOOD

    • The interpretation of the actor Tye Sheridan is the best that we can see in the film and the way he interprets it makes you think if he was comfortable, since it is the first time I see him playing this type of role , but he did very well from my point of view.

    • It may be repetitive, but the use of a character with autism is something that attracts a lot of attention, since it will always create the attention of the viewer by knowing how the character will develop and what path he will take. This is a point in favor of the film that despite its poor development can entertain you with the participation of the main character.

    MY RATING

As a lover of good cinema I have to be very objective, I could see it until the end, but it was not to my total liking, since it has many bad points and based on that I have rated it with a 6.5/10 perhaps it is the lowest rating that I personally have done to a movie.

    FINAL THOUGHT

Current films are lacking originality and depth in their main plots, which makes it less appealing to see a certain movie and this is very repetitive in films shot under the radar or the shadow of Hollywood, where it is not yet they detach themselves from that simple formula and do not risk doing something different.

The opposite occurs with foreign productions where the work they do has a different flavor and they have more space to risk big and in many cases we see very good films.

    TRAILER

European or Asian movies are going strong and promise to be a space for the viewer to go and enjoy movies that could blow your head off. I have seen very good films and that has kept me somewhat away from films under the Hollywood radar that is still a great one, but that little by little loses ground.

Well, MOVIEGOERS I hope you liked my little review and I do not hope to read your comments, we are reading.

  2. The Night Clerk (2020) review@unbiasedwriter2210d

The Night Clerk is a quite new movie that I discovered during my research for my article and video-clip on the newly added movies and TV shows to Netflix last week. You can check the article and clip right here. As I looked around, I discovered this movie which can be streamed on Netflix in the USA, and I decided to actually check it out. So, here I am, ready to share my thoughts on The Night Clerk.

    the night clerk1.jpg

The story of The Night Clerk

The Night Clerk tells us the story of a boy with Aspergers. He is struggling but continuously learning more about how to interact with people. One of his methods for learning is by spying on people visiting the hotel through cameras he has placed in the rooms.

One evening a woman checks into the hotel, and after checking in, she goes to her room. Our night clerk spies on her to find out what's going on, only to discover that a man comes to the room and soon, goes about to kill the woman.

What's happening after this? A police investigation is opened, and our boy with Aspergers is turning into one of the main suspects in the case.

Who is playing in The Night Clerk?

Tye Sheridan plays the role of the night clerk with Aspergers. You might recognize him from his roles in several X-Men movies (including the most recent named Dark Phoenix), and also from Ready Player One. I have got to say, he is doing a very good role in acting like a person with Aspergers, so big credit to him for the role.

Helen Hunt plays the role of his mother. We don't see her very often in the movie, and I didn't care much about her role.

John Leguizamo plays the role of the lead investigator on the case. He is doing a nice role, and this is a person with a long history, and you might recognize his voice from several Ice Age movies, and from movies dating back to as old as 1990 (Die Hard 2).

Ana de Armas is the mysterious lady who for some reason looks beautiful and catches an interest for the night clerk. She had a relative with Aspergers, and this seems to bring the two of them together. You might know her and recognize her from the recent blockbuster movie named Knives Out.

Is The Night Clerk worth watching?

I didn't have big expectations for the movie, but I did look forward to watching The Night Clerk. As the movie came to an end, I sat with a feeling that it could have been way better, but it could also have been much worse.

I had hoped that Bart Bromley (the night clerk) would have been smarter, more intelligent etc... Of course, he has Aspergers, but often, these are super smart in many areas. Of course, he is, considering the camera equipment and more, but somehow, he could have been even more impressing (in a Sherlock Holmes kind of way).

The rest of the actors were fairly average.

My score for The Night Clerk

    5/10

That seems to be a quite average score for this movie. It currently has a 5.2/10 score on IMDb, and it has a 34% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Have you seen the movie? I would love to hear your thoughts!
