This year I'm having the opportunity to watch several Christmas movies and although some like The Holdovers or The Night Before have seemed quite good to me, I must also admit that sometimes it seems that films of terrible quality about the holidays are in the majority.

The point is that although it seems like a low blow to me to attack a film like "The Princess Switch", at the same time I feel that it is perfect for identifying the difference between the former and the latter.
Starring the beautiful Vanessa Hudgens, "The Princess Switch" is one of those typical "lost twins" movies, where two people who live in totally different realities discover that there is someone identical to them and decide to swap temporarily to see what the advantages and disadvantages of their own lives are.
Although this premise is extremely generic and usually has a predictable conclusion, it must be recognized that put in the right hands it can be very entertaining, and over the years films such as The Parent Trap or even Lizzie Maguire's feature films have demonstrated that.
In this case we have Stacy de Novo and Lady Margaret, both played by Hudgens.
Stacy, on one hand, is an excellent baker who lives in Chicago, she is extremely obsessive with her routine and is going through a breakup that is affecting her a lot... On the other hand we have Margaret, a young woman who is about to become princess but wants to have a little bit of normality before marrying the prince.
Coincidentally, Stacy will travel to the nation of Belgavria in order to take part in a baking contest, where she will learn of Margaret's existence and they will decide to take the reins of each other's lives temporarily.
To be honest, I feel that all the narrative pillars for a "good story" are here, despite how extremely random the set-up is and how little effort the script makes in following its own logic. Let's remember that this is a Netflix original movie that is intended to be simple and fun, so it is fair to evaluate it as such.
Personally, from the beginning I had problems connecting with any of its characters, and trying to feel entertained by their presence on screen. This is not necessarily the fault of its cast, and, including Hudgens, we could say that most of its actors do a good job, what does not work in their favor is the foolish need to bombard the viewer with unnecessary data, as well as force gags and jokes without letting the performances have time to breathe.
From the irrelevant mentions of Stacy's romantic past, to the forced inclusion of an antagonist who ends up playing no crucial role in the climax, The Princess Switch seems to be an inorganic hodgepodge of similar films without questioning why they made all their most iconic creative decisions.

Not everything is negative, it knows how to efficiently capture the warmth that we expect from a Christmas film, and at least it has the sense of not taking things to an unnecessarily dramatic level. It has a predictable but satisfying climax.

La cuestión es que aunque me parece un golpe bajo atacar una película como "The Princess Switch", al mismo tiempo siento que resulta perfecta para identificar cuál es la diferencia entre los primeros y los segundos.
Protagonizada por la hermosísima Vanessa Hudgens "The Princess Switch" es una de esas típicas películas de "gemelos perdidos", en dónde dos personas que viven en realidades totalmente distintas descubren que hay alguien idéntico a ellos y deciden intercambiar temporalmente para ver cuáles son las ventajas y desventajas de sus propias vidas.
Si bien está premisa resulta extremadamente generica y suele tener una conclusión predecible, hay que reconocer que puesta en las manos adecuadas puede llegar a ser muy entretenida, y a lo largo de los años filmes como the parent trap o incluso el largometrajes de Lizzie Maguire lo han demostrado.
En este caso tenemos a Stacy de Novo y Lady Margaret, ambas interpretadas por Hudgens.
Stacy, por un lado, es una excelente repostera que vive en Chicago, es extremadamente obsesiva con su rutina y está pasando por una ruptura amorosa que le está afectando bastante... Por otro lado tenemos a Margaret, una joven que está apunto de convertirse en princesa pero quiere tener un poco de normalidad antes de casarse con el príncipe.
Casualmente, Stacy viajará a la nación se Belgavria con la finalidad de formar parte de un concurso de repostería, en dónde sabrá de la existencia de Margaret y decidirán tomar las riendas de la vida de la otra temporalmente.
Siendo honesto siento que todos los pilares narrativos para una "buena historia" están aquí, a pesar de lo extremadamente random que resulta el set up y el poco empeño que presta el guión en seguir su propia lógica. Recordemos que está es una película original de Netflix que pretende ser simple y divertida, así que es justo evaluarla como tal.
Personalmente desde el principio tuve problemas conectando con cualquiera de sus personajes, o en su defecto, tratando de sentirme entretenido por su presencia en pantalla. Esto no necesariamente es culpa de su cast, e, incluyendo a Hudgens podríamos decir que la mayoría de sus actores hace un buen trabajo, lo que no juega a su favor es la necia necesidad de bombardear al espectador con datos innecesarios, así como forzar gags y chistes sin dejar que los performances tengan tiempo para respirar.
Desde las menciones irrelevantes del pasado amoroso de Stacy, hasta la forzosa inclusión de un antagonista que no termina jugando ningún rol crucial en el desenlace, The Princess Switch pareciera ser una mescolanza inorgánica de películas similares sin cuestionar por qué las mismas tomaron todas sus decisiones creativas más icónicas.

No todo es negativo, sabe capturar con eficiencia la calidez que esperamos de un film navideño, y al menos tiene la decencia de no llevar las cosas a un plano innecesariamente dramático. Tiene un climax predecible pero satisfactorios.
