The history and evolution of humanity have been marked by increasingly astonishing achievements. Especially in recent centuries, man has sought to conquer every corner of the planet, wanting to go further, travel faster, fly higher, dive into the ocean depths and embrace nature in all its spaces.
La historia y la evolución de la humanidad han estado marcadas por logros cada vez más asombrosos. Sobre todo en los últimos siglos el hombre ha buscado conquistar cada rincón del planeta, queriendo ir más lejos, viajar más rápido, volar más alto, sumergirse en las profundidades oceánicas y abrazar la naturaleza en todos sus espacios.
In addition to that, since time immemorial humanity has also been fascinated by bodies of water (rivers, lakes, seas) and by mountains. In many cultures, ancient and modern, high mountains represent more than just huge rocks, what about the highest mountain on the surface of the earth? With its 8,848.86 meters, Mount Everest is the highest point on the planet and for almost a century some four thousand people have reached its summit, thousands more have been left halfway and some two hundred people have died in the attempt; and it is that a challenge like that is not for everyone. Le Sommet des Dieux is a French film directed by Patrick Imbert, based on the Japanese manga by Jiro Taniguchi which in turn is based on a novel by Baku Yumemakura and the story follows Fukamachi, a daring photographer who has worked photographing climbers for different magazines and that in the midst of a job disappointment (the group he was following failed to reach the top of Everest and that makes his photos and his article not interesting), he discovers a curious story in a bar in Kathmandu, Nepal.
Además de eso, desde tiempos inmemoriales la humanidad también ha sentido fascinación por las masas de agua (ríos, lagos, mares) y por las montañas. En muchas culturas, antiguas y modernas, las montañas altas representan más que sólo rocas inmensas, ¿qué decir de la montaña más elevada sobre la superficie de la tierra? Con sus 8.848,86 metros el Monte Everest es el punto más elevado sobre el planeta y desde hace casi un siglo unas cuatro mil personas han coronado su cumbre, miles más han quedado a medio camino y unas doscientas personas han muerto en el intento; y es que un desafío como ese no es para cualquiera. Le Sommet des Dieux es una película francesa dirigida por Patrick Imbert, basada en el manga japonés de Jiro Taniguchi que a su vez está basado en una novela de Baku Yumemakura y la historia sigue a Fukamachi, un atrevido fotógrafo que ha trabajado fotografiando alpinistas para diferentes revistas y que en medio de una decepción laboral (el grupo al que seguía no consiguió llegar a la cima del Everest y eso hace que sus fotos y su artículo no sean interesantes), descubre una curiosa historia en un bar en en Katmandú, Nepal.
At the bar and then in an alleyway, the photographer hears about a camera rumored to have belonged to George Mallory, a mountaineer who disappeared trying to climb Mount Everest and was perhaps the first man to do so.
En el bar y luego en un callejón, el fotógrafo escucha sobre una cámara fotográfica que se rumora perteneció a George Mallory, un montañista que desapareció intentando coronar el Everest y que quizás fue el primer hombre en lograrlo.
Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary are recognized in history as the first to reach the summit of Mount Everest, they achieved it in 1953, but if the camera is indeed Mallory's, it could contain a photo that proves that he reached the highest point of the earth almost thirty years before, in 1924. As a mystery and as a story to discover it's very interesting. Even if you are not a fan of mountaineering, this simple fact immerses you in the plot and to this is added the wonderful landscapes that the film gives us and how imposing the mountain is. We are not talking about trekking where there is a marked path, but about climbing walls of ice, creating routes facing the changing climate of the mountain, strong winds, snowfalls, avalanches, each time at a higher altitude until the point where breathing begins to be difficult. The human body is not designed to live at an altitude of 8,000 meters, so somehow conquering Everest is defying nature, risking your life.
Tenzing Norgay y Edmund Hillary son reconocidos en la historia como los primeros en alcanzar la cumbre del monte Everest, lo lograron en 1953, pero si la cámara es en efecto de Mallory, podría contener alguna foto que pruebe que él alcanzó el punto más alto de la tierra casi treinta años antes, en 1924. Como misterio y como historia a descubrir resulta muy interesante. Aunque no sea fanático del alpinismo, este simple hecho lo sumerge a uno en la trama y a ello se suman los maravillosos paisajes que nos regala la película y lo imponente que resulta la montaña. No estamos hablando de hacer trekking en donde hay un sendero marcado, sino de escalar muros de hielo, crear rutas enfrentándose al cambiante clima de la montaña, a los fuertes vientos, nevadas, avalanchas, cada vez a una altitud mayor hasta el punto en que respirar comienza a ser difícil. El cuerpo humano no está diseñado para vivir a 8.000 metros de altura por lo que de alguna manera conquistar el Everest es desafiar la naturaleza arriesgando la vida.
Following the trail of Mallory's camera, Fukamachi stumbles upon Habu Joji, a renowned mountaineer who mysteriously disappeared from the radar a few years earlier, but who had accomplished incredible things in his youth. Fukamachi suspects that Habu wants to climb Everest solo and he wants the scoop, but that means finding Hobu, convincing him and then climbing the mountain with him, will the photographer be up to the challenge?
Siguiendo la pista de la cámara de Mallory, Fukamachi da con la pista de Habu Joji, un renombrado alpinista que desapareció misteriosamente del radar unos años antes, pero que en su juventud había logrado cosas increíbles. Fukamachi sospecha que Habu quiere subir solo al Everest y él quiere tener la exclusiva, pero eso significa encontrar a Hobu, convencerlo y luego subir con él a la montaña, ¿estará el fotógrafo a la altura del desafío?
The film has a good script, beautiful photography, it shows us a world many times ignored by us who, in the midst of our daily lives, don't think about these adventurers who seek to achieve the impossible. If you like courageous stories, Japanese manga (although the original audio of the film is in French), nature, thrillers, motivational and self-improvement stories, Le Sommet des Dieux is a movie that you can enjoy and if you are also into mountaineering stories, you can add to your list the live action version of the same story Evyeresuto: Kamigami no Itadaki (released in Japan in 2016) and the Netflix documentary 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible about the Nepalese climber Nimsdai Purja who crowned the 14 peaks in the world that exceed 8,000 meters in just seven months, setting a new record, how many of you like climbing stories? La película tiene un buen guión, una fotografía hermosa, nos muestra un mundo muchas veces ignorado por nosotros que en medio de nuestra cotidianidad no pensamos en estos aventureros que buscan lograr lo imposible. Si te gustan las historias con coraje, los mangas japoneses (aunque el audio orginal de la película está en francés), la naturaleza, los thrillers, las historias de motivación y superación, Le Sommet des Dieux es una película que puedes disfrutar y si específicamente también te van las historias de alpinismo puedes agregar a tu lista la versión live action de la misma historia Evyeresuto: Kamigami no Itadaki (estrenada en Japón en 2016) y el documental de Netflix 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible sobre el escalador nepalí Nimsdai Purja quien coronó los 14 picos del mundo que superan los 8.000 metros en apenas siete meses, estableciendo un nuevo récord, ¿a cuántos de ustedes les gustan las historias de escaladas? ¿alguno ha visto The Summit of the Gods?
