Film Review: The Titan (2018)@drax290d
We live in interesting times when certain words are disappearing from the dictionary. One example might be the phrase “direct-to-video,” which seems likely to fall completely out of use in perhaps just a few years. The reason is not so much that video stores, VHS tapes, and DVDs—the mediums through which these films were distributed—have vanished, but rather that the stigma of inferiority once attached to films never intended for cinema screens is slowly fading. One factor behind this shift is Netflix, a corporation that has begun to seriously challenge the most fundamental aspects of the global film industry, primarily due to its willingness to bypass traditional distribution risks that would make any conventional studio hesitate. The result is a string of productions that, thanks to their budgets or star power, appear more than worthy of the big screen, yet still end up exclusively on the small one. Occasionally, some of these Netflix films slip through the cracks in global distribution and become accessible to cinema audiences in certain countries. In Croatia’s case, one such example is the sci-fi film The Titan, the debut of German director Lennart Ruff.
The film is set in 2048, a world in dramatically worse shape than today. A population explosion that dwindling resources can no longer sustain, alongside ecological and other disasters, threatens to render Earth uninhabitable. Humanity’s only hope for survival lies in space colonisation, with Saturn’s moon Titan deemed the most viable location within the solar system. However, Titan presents extreme cold, weak sunlight, and an unbreathable atmosphere. Professor Collingwood (Tom Wilkinson) concludes that building artificial habitats is impractical and terraforming impossible, but proposes a far simpler—though radically unconventional—alternative: instead of adapting Titan to humans, he develops an experimental gene therapy to modify human bodies to Titan’s conditions. Lieutenant Rick Janssen (Sam Worthington), a pilot who survived three days without water in the Syrian desert, appears the ideal candidate for the NATO-backed programme. Along with his wife Abigail (Taylor Schilling) and son Lucas (Noah Jupe), he arrives at a base where, alongside other selected volunteers, they live in luxurious villas while undergoing medical examinations and therapy. Though initially idyllic, the treatment proves far from safe—for both the future “Titans” and their loved ones. As the process advances, Rick and his comrades begin losing recognisable human features, morphing into grotesque creatures, raising questions about whether they still consider themselves human or feel any connection to their families.
Like many sci-fi films, The Titan initially adheres to the parameters of “hard” science fiction—that is, its definition as a “genre of ideas.” Max Hurwitz’s screenplay offers a reasonably intriguing departure from clichés common in space colonisation narratives, providing potential for plot twists and intelligent exploration of what defines human existence and identity. It also smuggles in commentary on current events, particularly the Syrian conflict, which the film suggests will persist for decades. However, the well-constructed setup and relatively solid direction by debutant Ruff fail to save the film from significant flaws. The casting is notably poor, chiefly due to the notoriously bland and forgettable Sam Worthington in the lead role—a part easily outshone by Schilling, a far superior actor known for Orange Is the New Black, who emerges as the true protagonist. Even more tragic is supermodel Agyness Heyn’s portrayal of Collingwood’s assistant, exacerbated by a screenplay that never explains or even hints at her motivations by the climax. Sadder still, the script becomes bogged down in the author’s dilemma: whether to pursue a “serious” sci-fi film or succumb to clichés and shock audiences with bug-eyed monsters. This is resolved in the worst possible way—a pathetic hybrid of horror and quasi-political thriller—capped by a thoroughly unconvincing deus ex machina involving once much talked about, now largely inactive American federal agency. The result is a colossal disappointment: a film that not only would have landed straight on the direct-to-video shelf in the old days but thoroughly deserved to.

Science fiction is a genre that lends itself to futuristic thinking; about what human life would be like in 10, 20 or even 50 years. There are films that have managed to show us chaotic visions of the future and science, but some tend to commercialize it so much that they lose their direction of leaving a work of art. The Titan is one of those films that create a story out of a global issue, and having this powerful tool in their hands, they were not able to create a much more compelling plot, capable of dispelling any questions that come their way. I think they went a bit overboard and I feel that the result was not what was expected.

La ciencia ficción es un género que se presta para el pensamiento futurista; sobre como sería la vida humana dentro de 10, 20 o hasta 50 años. Hay películas que han logrado mostrarnos visiones caóticas sobre el futuro y la ciencia, pero algunas tienden a comercializarlo tanto que pierden su dirección de dejar una obra de arte. The Titan es de esas películas que crean una historia a partir de una problemática global, y teniendo esta poderosa herramienta en sus manos, no fueron capaces de crear una trama mucho más convincente, capaz de disipar cualquier pregunta que se le presente. Creo que se les ha ido un poco la cabeza y siento que el resultado no era lo que se esperaba.

In the near future, planet Earth begins its most catastrophic decline. Resources are becoming scarce and humanity struggles to gain more territory. A world war is looming and world leaders must gamble on a new hope to prevent the extinction of the human race. Rick Janssen is a military aviator who was selected along with other soldiers to participate in "Project Titan", a strange experiment funded by NATO to modify human genetics and accelerate the process of evolution, so that humans can inhabit Titan, one of the moons of Saturn, which has a deadly atmosphere for human life. In sequence, we will see the whole procedure of genetic modification and the side effects of this strange experiment.

En un futuro cercano, el planeta Tierra empieza su declive más catastrófico. Los recursos comienzan a escasear y la humanidad lucha por obtener más territorios. Una guerra mundial se avecina y los líderes mundiales deben apostar por una nueva esperanza para evitar la extinción de la raza humana. Rick Janssen, es un aviador militar que fue seleccionado junto a otros soldados para participar en ”El Proyecto Titán”, un extraño experimento financiado por la OTAN para modificar la genética humana y acelerar el proceso de evolución, esto con el fin de que los humanos podamos habitar Titán; una de las lunas de Saturno, la cual posee una atmosfera mortal para la vida humana. En secuencia, veremos todo el procedimiento de modificación genética y los efectos secundarios de este extraño experimento.
When I first saw the poster I thought it was one of those spaceship-themed sci-fi movies, but after watching the trailer, I realized it wasn't so much that. Then I played it and all my expectations went down the drain, as I watched it I fell deeper and deeper into disappointment, as it was not what I expected.
Seeing Sam Worthington, again in a sci-fi movie, got me a little excited, as although Avatar is not one of my favorites, I think he is a good actor, but the role he was given seemed more of a self-destructive guy than a hero. Then we have the performance of Taylor Schilling, our famed Orange is the New Black actress, who I see as the real heroine in this movie with a spectacular performance.
After a slow and boring first half, the movie only shows us the process of genetic modification of the participants in the experiment, which I already imagined since the trailer reveals more than half of the plot. And not to mention those meaningless dialogues that even the actors themselves expressed in a lazy way, something I could notice in Tom Wilkinson already in the last third of the film. The film is not original at all, as it mixes other science fiction plots, I even felt several airs of literature from works like The Island of Doctor Moreau by H. G. Wells and Frankenstein: The Modern Prometheus by Mary Shelley, but with a more crude and lazy sequence.
The film leaves you with obvious questions that it doesn't answer within its story: Why the moon Titan and not the planet Mars? Was all this procedure necessary to inhabit an uninhabitable world? It is a great failure of the script not to answer these questions, I would have preferred a spaceship movie where the evolutionary process is done in space, or a brief explanation of why Mars is not a candidate to continue human life.
The last final scenes were the most absurd and null I've seen, it seems that they were made with laziness, it was as if the production at the last minute stopped betting on this project, something we can see in the actors who were eager to end this bad movie. It's a shame that they didn't know how to get more out of a story that could have been excellent.

Cuando vi el póster por primera vez pensé que se trataba de una de esas películas de ciencia ficción con temática de naves espaciales, pero luego de ver el tráiler, me di cuenta que no era tanto eso. Después la reproduje y todas mis expectativas se fueron a la basura, pues a medida que la veía iba cayendo cada vez más en una profunda decepción, ya que no era lo que esperaba.
Al ver a Sam Worthington, nuevamente en una película de ciencia ficción, me emocionó un poco, ya que aunque Avatar no es de mis favoritas, pienso que él es un buen actor, pero el papel que le dieron parecía más de un sujeto autodestructivo que de un héroe. Luego tenemos la interpretación de Taylor Schilling, nuestra afamada actriz de Orange is the New Black, a la cual la veo como la verdadera heroína en esta película con una actuación espectacular.
Después de una primera mitad lenta y aburrida, la película solo nos muestra el proceso de modificación genética de los participantes en el experimento, cosa que ya me imaginaba ya que el tráiler revela más de la mitad de la trama. Y ni hablar de esos diálogos sin sentido que hasta sus propios actores expresaban de manera floja, cosa que podía notar en Tom Wilkinson ya en el último tercio de la obra. La película no es nada original, pues mezcla otras tramas de ciencia ficción, incluso sentí varios aires de la literatura de obras como La isla del doctor Moreau de H. G. Wells y Frankenstein: el moderno Prometeo de Mary Shelley, pero con una secuencia más burda y perezosa.
La película te deja preguntas obvias que no te responde dentro de su historia: ¿Por qué la luna Titán y no el planeta Marte? ¿Era necesario todo este procedimiento para lograr habitar un mundo inhabitable? Es una gran falla del guion no responder a estas dudas, hubiera preferido una película de naves espaciales donde el proceso evolutivo se hace en el espacio, o una breve explicación de por qué Marte no es candidato para continuar la vida humana.
Las últimas escenas finales fueron lo más absurdo y nulo que he visto, parece que las hubieran hecho con flojera, era como si la producción al último minuto dejó de apostar en este proyecto, cosa que podemos ver en los actores que ansiaban terminar con esta película tan mala. Es una lástima que no hayan sabido sacarle más el jugo a una historia que pudo haber sido excelente.
The Titan, is a movie as absurd and boring as all the ones created by Netflix to fill its catalog. They could have made it better, but I think the forces of wills were exhausted. I was expecting something much more surprising, as the trailer seemed to promise much more action, however, the movie hasn't even given us that and instead grants us an unacceptable drama that wasn't taken advantage of as it should. I had some expectations, but in the end, we will always have the certainty that nothing is what it seems. I definitely don't recommend it, but if you want to check it out, it's still current on Netflix.

The Titan, es una película tan absurda y aburrida como todas las creadas por Netflix para rellenar su catálogo. Pudieron haberla hecho mejor, pero creo que las fuerzas de voluntades se agotaron. Esperaba algo mucho más sorprendente, pues el tráiler parecía prometer mucho más acción, sin embargo, la película no nos ha dado ni eso y, en vez de ello, nos otorga un drama inadmisible que no se aprovechó como debería. Tenía algo de expectativas, pero en fin, siempre tendremos la certeza de que nada es lo que parece. Definitivamente no la recomiendo, pero si quieres echarle un vistazo, aún se encuentra vigente en Netflix.
