I would say that Tremors (1990), is the most fun cult film that I have ever seen, especially if we consider that it is part of the monster film genre which is a genre that is not supposed to be that much fun, yeah the original Godzilla movies were fun, but it was not a comedy film in nature, even the American remakes were not comedy, so how Tremors managed to be so different to the rest?
Tremors not only was different from any other monster movies from the 90s, but it also influenced the world of comedy-horror in ways never seen before, and they made this happen by spawning endless numbers of sequels and spin-off series that plague our grounds to the modern day, so let's join the small town of Perfection and increase their population from their original fourteen, while we dive into the undergrounds of tremors, my favorite cult film about monsters.
If I were to summarize Tremors as a film, I would do it with the following line simple in every term, and that is what makes it work, Tremors as a film is grounded on the idea of show, don't tell that films in modern days seem to have forgotten. Tremors dint have a scientist that knew all of how to fix the problem before it even happened, and it also dint made the monsters easy to kill, in other words, it does not serve the story on a silver platter, we have to learn it slowly and that is a simplicity that has been forgotten in modern times.
In the modern day, monster films usually do a major info dump on the universe we are seeing, we even see it in reboots of classics like Godzilla, we just can't escape those 15 minutes of mandatory info dump and even in the lamest of all cases like in the film "A quiet place" we still get a lot of random "I don't know" answers to the loopholes of the plot, making the whole exposition unnecessary if you look it close enough.
This info dump is always in the guise of so wise person and a lot of random pseudosciences to back up whatever fiction we are seeing, this sometimes goes beyond logic and if it is a Marvel film we might end up with more than 25 mins of plain talking or some MacGuffin like "because vibranium" a clear example of that is Godzilla and the nuclear evolution explanation of the 90s reboot.
With this context we see all of these info dumps in the 90s to be logical, Jurassic Park had the cloning explanation, Mimic the whole virus thingy that made no sense, Species and its "aliens" MacGuffin, you can see the pattern, Tremors did none of that, and that is why it shined the brightest in my eyes.
The lack of a MacGuffin explanation in the universe for the Graboids got a lot more important if we count other elements of the film, the actors and their performances, you see, even the name of the beast is a simple one, and was proposed by a simple character, Walter Chang, based on the behavior of the beast that "grabs people" so Grab-oids or "those that grab".
These characters are one of the main reasons for this saga remained alive and had so many films and spin-offs, yeah most of them died horrible deaths as Chang did, but all of them were great scenes, and they were simple people that slowly grew on the viewer.
The main character duo of Valentine McKee (Kevin Bacon) and Earl Bassett (Fred Ward) who were the ultimate Buddy bromance in a 90s film, sold the whole idea of a small half-dead town that was kept alive with some duct tape and hard work, something a lot of people can relate to, especially common everyday folks.
It Is Valentine's reactions, emotional outbursts, and constant laughs, that made this film as funny as it was, these constant "Kevin Bacon" moments were part of Tremor's soul, but there was another part that is why there are a bunch of sequels, the beloved trigger-happy Burt Gummer (Michael Gross).
Burt would be the main character of about 80% of the sequels, slowly growing and becoming more and more relatable, yet this film was an incredible representation of the guns fanatics of the USA in the 90s, he was both sober and prepared, someone to be respected yet not feared, a gentle soul with a massive Graboid killing shotgun, Burt was the other half on the film soul.
If Kevin and Michael were each half of the film's soul, the body of this film would be the Graboids, simple yet overly complicated monsters, they are simple in design, just worms that somehow feel the ground, they lack eyes, and that tongue that bite, yeah, their tongues have teeth and it bites.
Visually they are a mix of the old Dune worms, with a ton of tongues and a weird kind of octopus peak that is somehow divided in four instead of three, making them a lot weirder, but the details of how they move with those little appendages and how they make seismological noise before arrival that makes them unique.
They move the ground, create empty pockets of air, and small explosions of air and dirt on the surface, they break the bases of the town buildings, they make things shake up and burrow them down and when they break the ground it's a guarantee of death to any character, Graboids are simply a bunch of fearful monsters.
Oh, the bro-mance, this film has the best buddy relationship that any other 90s film I have ever seen, these honest and kind relations are rarely present in monster films at all, in these films, everything goes around the monster to the point that creators usually forgot to make good characters, but Valentine and Earl, those two are the real deal.
These simple yet loveable characters are the backbone of this film, their celebrations when they kill a Graboid feel like ours, and their smiles and constant child-like plays feel like we have known them forever, in other words, they feel alive as characters and relatable to us the audience.
There are a lot more reasons why Tremors became a huge success on VHS and TV but failed on the big screen, in my eyes this film was made for an audience that dint existed for cinema of its time, it was made for those that nominated Coda for the Oscars, for the people that go to the cinema waiting for a "good and fun film" instead of a big triple-A blockbuster full of FX or drama driven artistic film that is supposed to win the Oscars.
Tremors as a film were made for the people that like simple things, like a random worm coming out of the floor and eating people, no explanation, no info dump, just random, after all, life is a bit random like that at times, a person might get eaten by a worm or struck by lightning there is no difference, that is how much weird life can be, yeah, in real live there are no Graboids, but sure we have a lot of animals that could kill us, right?.
I have always loved films that have good and believable characters, most monster films always have those hardcore science guys that always know all that there is to know of the monster, and almost always die foolishly, I find those as utter nonsense as I studied a science career myself and I constantly feel like I know nothing of the world around me. Yo diría que Tremors (1990), es la película de culto más divertida que he visto nunca, sobre todo si tenemos en cuenta que es parte del género de películas de monstruos el cual es un género que no se supone que sea muy divertido, sí las películas originales de Godzilla eran divertidas, pero no era una película de comedia en naturaleza, incluso los remakes americanos no eran comedia, así que ¿Cómo Tremors logró ser tan diferente al resto?
Temblores no sólo fue diferente a cualquier otra película de monstruos de los 90, sino que también influyó en el mundo de la comedia-horror de una manera nunca antes vista, y lo hicieron posible engendrando un sinfín de secuelas y series "spin-off" que plagan los terrenos subterraneos hasta nuestros días, así que vamos a ingresar en la pequeña ciudad de Perfección y aumentar su población de sus catorce miembros originales, mientras nos sumergimos en los subterráneos Temblores, mi película de culto favorita sobre monstruos.
Si tuviera que resumir Tremors como película, lo haría con la siguiente línea "simple en todos los términos, y eso es lo que hace que funcione", Tremors como película se basa en la idea de "mostrar, no contar" que las películas de hoy en día parecen haber olvidado. Tremors no tiene un científico que sabe cómo solucionar el problema antes de que ocurra, y tampoco hace que los monstruos sean fáciles de matar, en otras palabras, no nos sirve la historia en bandeja de plata, tenemos que aprenderla poco a poco y esa es una simplicidad que se ha olvidado en los tiempos modernos.
En la actualidad, las películas de monstruos suelen hacer un gran volcado de información sobre el universo que estamos viendo, incluso lo vemos en los reboots de clásicos como Godzilla, simplemente no podemos escapar esos 15 minutos de dialogo e información obligatoria, incluso en el más patético de todos los casos como en la película "Un lugar tranquilo" todavía tenemos un montón de respuestas aleatorias diciendo "no sé" a las lagunas de la trama, haciendo que toda la exposición sea innecesaria si se mira lo suficientemente cerca.
Este volcado de información es siempre en forma de persona sabia y un montón de pseudociencias al azar para respaldar cualquier ficción que estamos viendo, esto a veces va más allá de la lógica y si se trata de una película de Marvel podríamos terminar con más de 25 minutos de simple charla o algún MacGuffin como "pues es vibranium" un claro ejemplo de ello es Godzilla y la explicación de la evolución nuclear del reseteo de los 90s.
Con este contexto vemos que todos estos volcados de información en los 90 eran lógicos, Jurassic Park tenía la explicación de la clonación, Mimic todo el rollo del virus que no tenía sentido, Species y su MacGuffin de los "aliens", podéis ver el patrón, Tremors no hizo nada de eso, y por eso brilló más a mis ojos.
La falta de una explicación MacGuffin en el universo para los Graboides se hizo mucho más importante si contamos otros elementos de la película, los actores y sus interpretaciones tomaron un rol mas pesado, incluso el nombre de la bestia es simple, y fue propuesto por un personaje simple, Walter Chang, basado en el comportamiento de la bestia que "agarra a la gente" así Grab-oids o "los que agarran" en Ingles.
Estos personajes son una de las principales razones para que esta saga se mantuviera viva y tuviera tantas películas e incluso una serie spin-off, si, la mayoría de ellos tuvieron muertes horribles como la de Chang, pero todas fueron grandes escenas, y eran personas sencillas que poco a poco calaban en el espectador.
El dúo protagonista formado por Valentine McKee (Kevin Bacon) y Earl Bassett (Fred Ward), es el mejor romance entre amigos en una película de los 90, vende la idea de un pequeño pueblo medio muerto que se mantiene vivo con cinta adhesiva y trabajo duro, algo con lo que mucha gente puede identificarse, especialmente la gente corriente.
Las reacciones de Valentine, sus arrebatos emocionales y sus constantes carcajadas hicieron que esta película fuera tan divertida como era. Estos constantes momentos del estilo "Kevin Bacon" formaban parte del alma de Tremor, pero había otra parte por la que hay un montón de secuelas: el querido gatillo facil de la saga, Burt Gummer (Michael Gross).
Burt sería el personaje principal de alrededor del 80% de las secuelas, creciendo lentamente y haciéndose cada vez más entrañable, sin embargo, esta película fue una increíble representación de los fanáticos de las armas de los EE.UU. en los años 90, era un sujeto sobrio y preparado, alguien a quien respetar pero no temer, un alma gentil con una enorme escopeta mata Graboides, Burt era la otra mitad del alma de la película.
Si Kevin y Michael fueran cada uno la mitad del alma de la película, el cuerpo de esta película serían los Graboides, monstruos simples y complicados en simultaneo, son simples en diseño, sólo gusanos que de alguna manera sienten el suelo, carecen de ojos, y tienen una lengua que muerde, sí, su lengua tiene dientes y muerde.
Visualmente son una mezcla de los viejos gusanos de Dune, con una tonelada de lenguas y una extraña especie de pico de pulpo que de alguna manera se divide en cuatro en lugar de tres, lo que los hace mucho más raros, pero es detalles cómo el movimiento de esos pequeños apéndices y cómo hacen ruido sismológico antes de llegar lo que los hace únicos.
Mueven el suelo, crean bolsas vacías de aire y pequeñas explosiones de aire y tierra en la superficie, rompen las bases de los edificios de la ciudad, hacen que las cosas se agiten y las entierran, y cuando rompen el suelo es garantía de muerte para cualquier personaje, los Graboides son simplemente unos monstruos temibles.
Vaya el bromance, esta película tiene la mejor relación de amigos que cualquier otra película de los 90 que haya visto, estas relaciones honestas y amables rara vez están presentes en las películas de monstruos, en estas películas, todo gira en torno al monstruo hasta el punto de que los creadores por lo general se olvidan de hacer buenos personajes, pero Valentine y Earl, esos dos son el verdadero paquete.
Estos sencillos pero adorables personajes son la columna vertebral de esta película, sus celebraciones cuando matan a un Graboide se sienten como las nuestras, y sus sonrisas y constantes juegos infantiles se sienten como si los conociéramos de toda la vida, en otras palabras, se sienten vivos como personajes y relacionables con nosotros el público.
Hay muchas más razones por las que Temblores se convirtió en un gran éxito en VHS y TV, pero fracasó en la gran pantalla, en mis ojos esta película fue hecha para un público que no existía para el cine de su momento, fue hecha para aquellos que nominaron a Coda para los Oscar, para la gente que va al cine esperando una "película buena y divertida" en lugar de una gran superproducción triple A llena de efectos especiales o un drama artístico que se supone debe ganar los Oscars.
Temblores como película se hizo para la gente que le gustan las cosas simples, como un gusano al azar que sale del suelo y se come a la gente, sin explicación, sin volcado de información, sólo al azar, después de todo, la vida es asi aveces, al azar, una persona puede ser comida por un gusano o golpeado por un rayo, no hay diferencia, eso es lo extraña que puede ser la vida, sí en la vida real no hay Graboides, pero seguro que tenemos un montón de animales que podrían matarnos, ¿No?
Siempre me han gustado las películas que tienen personajes buenos y creíbles, la mayoría de las películas de monstruos siempre tienen a esos científicos empedernidos que siempre saben todo lo que hay que saber del monstruo, y casi siempre mueren absurdamente, a mí me parecen una absoluta tontería ya que yo mismo estudié una carrera de ciencias y constantemente siento que no sé nada del mundo que me rodea. ¿Has pensado alguna vez en ese tipo de personajes? ¿Qué opinas de ellos?
