Looking through my list of anime I've seen—because I have a list of anime I still want to watch—I remembered I've never talked about Tsubasa Chronicle. It's an anime I both liked and disliked at the same time. I don't know, I mean, the story is interesting, but it confused me. I'm not sure if I understood the ending and everything that was happening correctly, or if I just made up the plot myself. Anyway, this story is like a mix of several characters from its creators, CLAMP, especially from Cardcaptor Sakura, so if you liked that anime, you might be interested in this one.
Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle (ツバサ - レザボア クロニクル)…

Personal opinion
Personally, I ended up watching this story because, well, I thought it was like a continuation of Cardcaptor Sakura, and well, big mistake, because the story is completely different. Even though it has the same characters, it clearly works and develops in a totally different way, ending with a feeling of emptiness towards the end, because it's not really a sad or happy ending, I wouldn't know how to put it, it's more about doubts and confusion. I feel like it's a project, or was a rather ambitious project, that sought the scale of a Greek tragedy mixed with a modern multiverse, and the result is an experience that changes drastically and that, yes, tends to be confusing, like you understand it and at the same time you don't.
That said, it can't be denied that it's deceptive, as the plot isn't simple, and perhaps that complexity is what you'll really enjoy. Furthermore, the concept of the price you have to pay for the witch to do something works very well and is truly painful; it's not just about magic, it's about real loss. Something I should mention, in case you want to watch it, is that it is slow at the beginning, and I think they add filler, if I remember correctly. But specifically in the OVAs, the action picks up, and the secrets and all the entanglements that existed silently from the beginning begin to gain momentum. It becomes a labyrinth of time paradoxes and moral dilemmas that force you to pay very close attention; it's not a series to watch in the background, it's a story that demands you question the identity of the protagonists.
Now, regarding the animation, it does decline a bit. The fact that the characters look stretched and that it's not very fluid shows that the budget was limited, although I must admit that it improved a lot in the OVAs. And what I loved most was the music. I still remember the opening and ending themes for everything (the series and OVAs), and those tracks were truly remarkable. Furthermore, the music didn't just become background music; it dictated the feeling of the series.
Positive points…
- The music, for me, is the strongest point of this anime. Everything fits the story perfectly, and you connect with the characters and their scenes thanks to the soundtrack. (I also appreciate the Spanish versions of the opening and ending themes.)
- Worldbuilding: The creativity in designing worlds with their own rules is truly fascinating and intriguing.
- Character Evolution: The development of Syaoran, from a kind boy to a hardened warrior, and others, shows that its characters are not one-dimensional.
- The Multiverse Concept: Long before the multiverse became common in film, this series already handled it with astonishing internal consistency, organically connecting various works (like xxxHOLiC).
- The OVAs: They are a masterpiece of animation and storytelling. If you manage to watch them, the reward is one of the darkest and most exciting plots in the genre.
Negative points…
- Pacing and Filler: The beginning and the parts not found in the manga diminish the impact of the mysterious ending.
- Inconsistent Animation: While the OVAs are visually stunning, the two TV seasons have fairly standard animation.
- Confusing and Excessive Complexity: A lot happens, and if you understand the time paradox and all that, I think you'll better grasp the whole mess the characters are caught up in.
- Inconclusive Ending in the Anime: The TV anime never finishes the main story. It ends abruptly, and to understand the ending, you have to read the manga or watch the OVAs (which, in any case, have time jumps that can be confusing).

Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle is a melancholic work. It's a love letter to CLAMP fans, but also a cruel story about growing up and what we're willing to leave behind to save someone. It's not perfect, and I think its biggest flaw was its conclusion and the lengths it went to to reveal who and what each character was, because the depth of its themes and the beauty of its music make it an unforgettable experience if you can get past its slow start.

Revisando la lista de animes que he visto, porque en la misma tengo animes para ver, recordé que nunca hablé de Tsubasa Chronicle, siendo un anime que me gustó y me disgustó al mismo tiempo, no sé, ósea es interesante la historia, pero me enredaba, no sé si entendí bien el final y todo lo que estaba pasando o yo misma me inventé lo que era la trama en sí. En fin, esta historia es como una mezcla de varios personajes de su creadoras, CLAMP, especialmente de Sakura Card Captor, por lo que, si te gustó este anime, puede que te llame la atención este otro.

Opinión personal
En lo personal, termine viendo esta historia porque bueno, pensé que era como una continuación de Sakura Card Captor y pues, grave error, porque la historia es totalmente distinta, aunque tenga a los personajes de la misma, claramente funciona y se desarrolla totalmente diferente, terminando con un vacío hacia ese final, porque realmente no es un final triste ni feliz, no sabría como decirlo, es más de dudas y confusiones. Siento que, es un proyecto, o era un proyecto bastante ambicioso, que buscaba la escala de una tragedia griega mezclada con un multiverso moderno, y el resultado es una experiencia que cambia drásticamente y que, si, tienden a confundir, como entiendes y a la vez no.
Eso sí, no se puede negar que engaña, pues trama sencilla no es y, quizás, esa complejidad les gusté mucho, aunado que, el concepto del precio que deben pagar para que la bruja haga algo, funciona muy bien y realmente es doloroso, no se trata solo de magia, se trata de pérdida real; algo que debo acotar, por si desean verlo, es que, al inicio si es lento y creo que meten relleno, si mal no recuerdo, pero, específicamente en los OVAS, es que la acción toma lugar y los secretos y todo los enrollo que existían desde el inicio silenciosamente, empiezan a tomar fuerza, se convierte en un laberinto de paradojas temporales y dilemas morales que te obligan a prestar muchísima atención; no es una serie para ver de fondo, es una historia que te exige cuestionar la identidad de los protagonistas.
Ahora bien, en referencia con la animación, pues si decae un poco, el hecho de que los personajes se vean estirados y que no tenga tanta fluidez, se nota que el presupuesto era limitado, aunque debo admitir que en los OVAS mejoraron mucho. Y lo que más me encanto, la música, aun recuerdo su opening y ending de todo (la serie y ovas), y realmente eran destacables esos temas, además que, la música no solo se convirtió en el acompañamiento; es la que dicta el sentimiento de la serie.
Puntos positivos…
- La música, para mi es el punto fuerte de este anime, todo concuerda con la historia y llegas a conectar con los personajes y sus escenas gracias a la banda sonora. (Agradezco también su versión en español de los temas de entrada y salida)
- Construcción de Mundo (Worldbuilding): La creatividad para diseñar mundos con reglas propias, realmente es fascinante e intrigante.
- Evolución de Personajes: El desarrollo de Syaoran, de un chico amable a un guerrero endurecido y otros más, detalla que sus personajes no son planos.
- El Concepto del Multiverso: Mucho antes de que el multiverso fuera común en el cine, esta serie ya lo manejaba con una coherencia interna asombrosa, conectando varias obras (como xxxHOLiC) de manera orgánica.
- Las OVAs: Son una obra maestra de la animación y la narrativa. Si logras llegar a ellas, la recompensa es una de las tramas más oscuras y emocionantes del género.
Puntos negativos…
- Ritmo y Relleno: El inicio y las partes donde no aparecen en el manga, le quitan peso a ese misterioso que el desenlace aguarda.
- Animación Inconsistente: Mientras que las OVAs son visualmente increíbles, las dos temporadas de TV tienen una animación bastante estándar.
- Confusión y complejidad excesiva: realmente pasan muchas cosas y, si entiendes sobre la paradoja del tiempo y todo ello, creo que comprenderás más todo el rollo en el que se ven envueltos los personajes.
- Final Inconcluso en Anime: El anime de televisión nunca termina la historia real. Se queda en un punto muerto y, para entender el final, es obligatorio leer el manga o ver las OVAs (que de todos modos dejan saltos temporales que pueden confundir).

Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle es una obra melancólica. Es una carta de amor a los fans de CLAMP, pero también una historia cruel sobre el crecimiento y lo que estamos dispuestos a dejar atrás para salvar a alguien. No es perfecta y creo que en lo mas falló fue su conclusión y a lo que llegaron a tanto para saber quien y que era cada personaje, porque la profundidad de sus temas y la belleza de su música la hacen una experiencia inolvidable si logras superar su inicio lento.
