  1. League of Movies (Fourth Edition | Week 04): Mujer Maravilla/ Wonder Woman (2017)@miguelpeliculas2156d

For this week we have to find a film that will reflect the feminine power, find a performance of a strong, dangerous, sexy woman and all the positive adjectives that you can think of, and what better film it is, because Wonder Woman is the super heroine most famous and powerful in history.

The DC comics live-action movies haven't been the best lately, even both male characters from the most famous trinity of superheroes tried it, leaving much to be done, and this is where Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) comes in, to show us how they do things.

"Diana, daughter of the gods and princess of the Amazons, has never left her island. One day, in the context of the First World War, an American pilot crashes on his island and Diana saves her life; The pilot explains that a great war is unfolding that can devastate the world, and Diana sets off for battle."

The main virtue of the film is that they know who Wonder Woman is and what she means. Paty Jenkins, the director of the film, knows very well where the development of this fearsome warrior is going, but she also has a very tender and innocent part, without ever deviating from her beliefs or looking for shortcuts, which also makes her a character inspiring.

Gal Gadot as a wonder woman makes a very good interpretation of her character, covering all facets of it very well. Both its most tender and naive scenes in a new world, which is totally unknown, as its combat scenes, which are very good too. Also, you have to tell her, She is very beautiful!

Chris Pine as Steve Trevor is another strong point in the film, it is a rock for Diana to grow and be the superhero we all know. They also have good chemistry on the big screen and they give us very good scenes together.

The special effects of the film were good, there are moments where they are a bit loose and the CGI is exaggerated, although at other times, especially in slow motion, we see all the power of Wonder Woman.

As for the villains, they are not the best in the world but they comply, their motivations are very flat, since they have a goal to dominate everything, both General Ludendorff and Ares, the god of war. Also worth mentioning is Dra Maru or Dra Poison, who is a very intelligent and dangerous scientist, recruited to make biological weapons for the German army.

And finally, I'm not going to lie to you that it's a masterpiece, or the best movie ever, but it's really very good and more for me, I'm a DC fan, hahaha. In a few months the second installment is coming and I look forward to it.

  2. Insomniac Movie Marathon: Wonder Woman@rvgenaille2444d

    image -via IMDb.com

I have a new favourite superhero movie.

Took me a while to finally see Wonder Woman, lots of reasons behind the delay, I did want to see it on opening weekend but life got in the way. Anyway, I've seen it now and I am in awe. I knew it was good but not how good it was.

Wonder Woman almost redeems the last three DC films, its tone is different, the feel is different, Gal Gadot is awesome as Diana, Chris Pine is good as Steve Trevor, the support cast is strong and the story, while an origin story, is thoughtful, emotional and briskly paced. The action scenes were realistic, in the sense that they didn't feel like they were inserted just to appease some belief that there needs to be an action scene here.

I have a minor complaint with a couple of fight sequences that were noticeably computer-generated but it was a minor complaint and did not take anything away from the film.

If you haven't seen it, go see it!

  3. Wonder Woman (film): A great "origin" story@gooddream2808d

I have a love/hate relationship with super-hero movies in the past 5 years or so. For one thing, I believe they make entirely too may of them but I can understand why they do so. I mean, if you could get a 400% R.O.I. on a tried-and-true formula, even if said formula is overused, wouldn't you continue to do so?

    wonder_woman_poster_3.jpg

Now, just like the Black Panther story, the origin of the Amazon women is completely impractical but since this is a super-hero movie that isn't meant to be based in reality - I"m ok with it. An island hidden from the rest of the planet that once you leave (if you are an inhabitant) you can never return to and while i am sure someone out there can explain why it is that some WW1 people end up stumbling upon the island, i don't really understand how it is that they passed through to the Amazon Island dimension but i guess they needed to in order for Wonder Woman to feel compelled to leave (who is actually named Diana and unless i wasn't paying attention, is never actually referred to as "WW" in the movie at all.

    Wonder-Woman-12-e1496540957535-1024x579.jpg

I'll be honest and say that I never knew much about her, so if this movie stays honest to the comic book lore then I can honestly say that I learned a lot and so will you if you are into these kind of films. I found it to be significantly more interesting than say "Thor" which was a bit too convoluted for my liking.

The cinematography was very well done and one thing I really appreciated about DIana is that fact that even though she is a "super-hero" she isn't impractically omnipotent. She experiences difficulties getting past machine gun fire, snipers, and grenades and what not and I thought this was a nice touch that she on occasion needs some help.

    104495214-wonder-woman.530x298.jpg

I suppose the love story was a bit unnecessary but it was always going to happen. Another thing that I didn't like was the fact that all of the people that accompany her can see that she is otherworldly and extremely powerful but yet they continually tell her that what she wants to do is not possible.

    ww-01748c-h_2017-625x352.jpg

This results in her going off on her own and getting it done anyway.

Overall, i really liked this film and thought it was not just a lot of fun, but also very informative for any comic book nerds out there. Perhaps that is just for me because I never much cared for wonder woman in a comic book sense and therefore never bothered to learn about her. The action comes at a steady pace and the story is very rarely boring. Of course a bunch of critics tried to turn this into some sort of social justice something or other but i'm pretty much GTFOH about all that action. I recommend that you see this movie if you are one of the few people on the planet that haven't done so yet. Spoiler alert - Diana is immortal :P

  4. Wonder Woman Continues to Break Records@readingdanvers3065d

    Wonder Woman2.jpg

It's been a while since I commented on how successful Wonder Woman is. People's love for the movie didn't end when it cinematic life ended. Perhaps because the movie was snubbed by the Oscars, some of the official DVD and Blu-Ray says sales information has been published. When it was first released after a flashy event the DVD sales for the movies went to number 1. But Wonder Woman is not a movie that plays the short turn game, it plays the long run game. According to the-numbers.com Wonder Woman in now number 37 in the All-Time Best-Selling Blu-ray's list. She's passed a few notable movies like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 and The Avengers: Age of Ultron. When Patty Jenkins published an article about this, the article stated that Wonder Woman is number 40, but I guess it's been a while since they checked the site which they refereed to. Theses numbers are only limited to the United States. In the DVD corner the movie ended up as number 8 in the most sold DVD's of 2019 in the United States. The Oscars may have snubbed Wonder Woman, but the ancillary markets did not.

Also such great numbers at the ancillary markets imply that Wonder Woman 2 will open a lot higher than the $103 million dollars that the first movie opened with.

  6. How Wonder Woman Movie is Connected to Justice League@readingdanvers3179d

    Justice League 3.jpg

I know, at first glance, Wonder Woman is a standalone movie that is not connected in anyway to the larger DCEU. It’s even setup during in World War I. But, a closer look at the movie and the Justice League trailers will reveal that not all is as simple as we thought.

Spoiler warning: Spoilers for Wonder Woman, Justice League trailers and the Justice League movie itself.

Bruce Wayne tries to win over Diana Prince.jpg

Wonder Woman opens with Diana Prince receiving an old photograph from Bruce Wayne of herself and her old friends when they were fighting in World War I. At the end of Batman vs Superman Wonder Woman wasn’t too thrilled about going back into man’s world and helping them. I guessed Bruce decided to remind her of the times when she did fight alongside men. It is also looks like it worked as in all of the Justice League trailers she appears to be his second in command.

In Wonder Woman we all learned that Hippolyta is not the best mom and also, she’s a liar. Considering that the Amazons are living on a hidden island, and the fact that they already have mother box in two of the trailers. It appears that humans under Ares’ control are not the only fight that the Amazons have fought against.

In fact, it seems more likely that the entire island was built not to keep the Amazons hidden from men, but to keep the mother box safe.

    steppenwolf lands on Themaskira.jpg

In the first trailer for Justice League we see what appears to be Steppenwolf landing in Themaskira, right next to a mother box. A weapon which Hippolyta didn’t show Diana in their arsenal.

    amazonian warriors fighting parademons.jpg

This shoot from the first full trailer shows us Amazonian warriors fighting parademons. I am not sure when, but it could be in the distant past, or in the movie’s current time. Either way, I don’t think a lot of the Amazons will survive this movie, or any. We see shoots of the Amazons fighting parademons in the new Heroes trailer as well. They will be a part of the movie. Also, don’t expect a reunion between Diana and her mother, this is not that kind of movie.

Since the Amazons have a mother box, and Steppenwolf lands on their lands, I think that all of Themaskira will be destroyed. It appears that the land that Steppenwolf touches turns into fire, and that’s what will happen to paradise island as well.

  8. Wonder Woman--Finally a Superhero that wants to be a Superhero@mctiller3305d

My wife and I traveled to Cinebistro, our favorite movie theater, and we got to see Wonder Woman on opening night. And we thoroughly enjoyed it.

After Superman and Ben Affleck--Batman D.C finally gets super heroes right with Wonder Woman.

You don't always need scowling, angry-at-the-world superheros.

Seriously, boys, give it a rest...

The movie begins when Bruce Wayne sends Diana a photographic plate from hundred years earlier in 1918, and asking for her story.  This is the same photograph we saw in Batman versus Superman.

With Man of Steel and Dawn of Justice it seems like Superman doesn't want to be Superman, Batman doesn't want to be Batman.  It's a huge burden to be a superhero that no one understands.

But people want to be a superhero, that's why we read them in the comic books, why we watch them on TV, and why we pay money to go see them at the movies.

Wonder Woman--She wants to be Wonder Woman.  And that is refreshing.

Right from the get-go of her early childhood Princess Diana, on the island of Themyscira, wants to be a warrior.

But her mother the queen, played by Connie Nielsen, does not want her be a warrior and regularly reminds her that she is a princess.  But as she grows up the queen must contend with General Antiope, played by Robin Wright, who secretly begins training her.  General Antiope knows Diana's godly background, and knows that her ability will be needed someday on the battlefield.

The first 30 minutes of the movie is getting Diana ready to be Wonder Woman. This is an eager and naive Diana.  This isn't a world weary superhero.  This is a superhero who is looking for adventure.

Diana's desire for adventure happens when Steve Trevor accidentally discovers the Island of Themyscira, and consequently so does a battalion of German soldiers who are chasing Steve across the ocean.

During the battle Diana hids at first, but as her people are attacked and killed she joins in for her taste of actual battle.  In the battle General Antiope is killed.  In her naivety Diana believes that she can off and fight war, that she believes is really being run by Ares, the Greek God of War.  Convinced that all she needs is her sword to kill Ares, and therefore end the war, she leaves with Steve Trevor.  Much to the sadness of Queen Hippolyta.

The movie transitions from the Island of the Amazons to 1918 Europe, and Princess Diana is expectedly out of place.  I found Gadot's acting to be very charming here.  Obviously she is very beautiful and athletic, but she also displays a good sense of comedic timing and vulnerability throughout these scenes.

As the movie transitions to World War I we are introduced to Erich Ludendroff an angry German General who is upset that Germany is eager to sign an armistice.

He is sure that his partner Isabel Maru, aka Doctor Poison, is on the verge of developing a chemical bomb so deadly it would turn the war not only back to Germany's favor, but give them certain victory.

Except for the fact that Steve Trevor has stolen the notes for this ultimate poison.

Diana follows Trevor to his leaders, and she is upset to find that they won't believe him.  She is even more upset with Steve with he decides it maybe too difficult to go against his superiors wishes.

This is what makes Wonder Woman interesting.  This isn't a superhero that goes and does everything for humankind, but pushes humans to do the right thing.  Superman and Batman would have just gone and solved the problem themselves, while everyone else stood to the side and let them do it.

As the story moves along and Trevor is forced to go rogue, we are introduced to his merry band of men--Charlie, Sameer, and Chief

And this theme is very evident when Diana makes her first appearance as Wonder Woman.

She fights her way across No-Man's-Land.  Instead taking out a machine gun nest on her own, Trevor sees an opening and FOLLOWS WONDER WOMAN INTO BATTLE AND HELPS HER.

And this theme continues as the scenes stretch into a village later, Trevor and his band of merry men realize that Wonder Woman is special, but they don't get out of the way and let her do all the work.  They help her in battle.  This makes Wonder Woman refreshing.

Now eventually there is the inevitable battle with Ares, and I am not going to spoil how we get to there, and that battle is for Wonder Woman alone.

Hopefully D.C. has learned with this.

Superheros are enjoyable when they want to be Superheros.

And Wonder Woman is quite enjoyable.
