Velvet Blush

My daughter had a dance concert at the weekend, and since my wife and in-laws were sick, she disappointedly was only accompanied by me - who was also in charge of getting her ready for the show, including making sure she had the right outfit. One thing I can do well,

Is shop for women.

I find it strange that many men don't seem to know their partner's sizes and would have no idea what size to get if buying a lingerie set for their wife or girlfriend. Shouldn't this be a "bare minimum" amount of attention paid? Most of my female friends (most of my friends are women) have often commented when we have been put browsing and I am looking at things for my wife, that their partners have occasionally tried to buy them some item of clothing - and they haven't come close. It also seems that men underestimate the size usually, which means that what they get is awkwardly too small. That is just coming from my friends though - perhaps it is because they are mostly dating Finnish men and they can't even buy clothes that fit themselves well.

When I shop for my wife, I usually buy what I think she will look good in, not what she usually wears. It is not that she doesn't look good in what she wears, but I think that all of us get "stuck" into a kind of style that might not be the best for us, but we feel comfortable in it. Clothing is a low-bar area to experiment a bit, and get accustomed to being a little uncomfortable and trying new things. I also will buy her things she is comfortable in too but try to,

Mix it up a bit.

I don't care about fashion.

There is a big difference between being fashionable, and being stylish and I think that when young, a lot of people end up confusing the two. They wear what is in fashion, even if it doesn't fit their body or personality, likely to feel more part of the group. However, as we age, we not only change body type, we also change "who we are" in so many ways, as while we are always "us", we can be quite different to the person we were earlier.

I am more casual now than I was before.

At least most of the time. However, I like to dress up a bit occasionally also, but I don't feel I have any nice clothes to wear. Nothing really "fits" me anymore and especially since the stroke, my body isn't comfortable in anything, or anywhere - I feel awkward in my own skin. I am no longer stylish.

The flow is gone.

At another time in history, I wonder how people "felt" about themselves and I wonder whether they were better off than us, because they hadn't been conditioned to emphasise their feelings and look inward constantly. Instead, they could just focus on survival, their next meal, their family - and while life might have been hard and painful, I wonder if they reflected upon it, and stressed themselves about how they feel. I suspect there was far more focus put on,

What they did.

We bought a flower on the way to the show for Smallsteps to give to the dance teacher, to go along with the card she had made to say thank you for the season. In the florist, Smallsteps chose which kind of flower she wanted and what colour and then I took two and asked to have them wrapped separately. Smallsteps said, "we only need one for the teacher" and I replied, I think someone else deserves one also, and she realised it was for her.

She rarely blushes.

Big points for Dad :) My wife is not big into all the clothing shopping things, she has her high end clothing, but rarely uses it. These days she like to buy comfortable clothing that is soft and light and orders a lot of it from Amazon. She hates shopping, when she goes to any store she is done shopping faster than me, she goes takes what she wants and doesn't even look around.

We also kind of agreed that I buy creams, jewelry and experiences for her, not the clothing as a $10 piece of clothing from Amazon is totally not exiting. Though I do know her sizes: US 5.5 in shoes and x-small in tops and 0 in pants :) Quite simple actually, except when some 0 or x-small is from a brand that doesn't really follow it and she would drown in x-small top :)

I also have different habits when it comes to clothing. First, when I go shopping, I buy something to wear. Then I wear things that I look good in. Things that are meant to be worn stay at home and wear out. I need to change that. I need to buy things that I look good in.

I usually buy what I think she will look good in, not what she usually wears.

And that ends up choosing the best because there is a feeling attached. Do you select faster than the lady ? I always help my family choose the right one out of few that cut my eyes and they feel my choice is best amongst all of us. More ever, we pick much faster than ladies, it's like moving eyes all around and then best ones comes out distinguished.

    Aww she's sooooooo cuuuuuuuuuuuute XD

J is pretty good at guessing my size but unfortunately I don't like wearing the stuff he would like to see me in XD

I told him I was writing this comment and he made a massive show of a massive pout XD

Middle is also pretty good at sizing, she has bought clothes as presents blind and never had a problem (which understandable when looking but somehow she manages online as well).

there was an amusing situation recently where we were wearing our team colours for work and middle said I could borrow one of her shirts which was the correct colour for one of my groups and I said that it would be too tight and she said no we're the same size you just like wearing big shirts. Dubiously I tried her shirt on and lo and behold we're the same size I just like wearing big shirts (her shirt fit me perfectly and because of the tactile issues my skin has most of the time this is fine but other times it's "too tight" even when it's not even tight)

Indeed, ypung people wear in fashion even if it doesn't go well with all of them. I think that we should wear what fits us the best, and the more I get aged the more Inwear causal :)

That's a beautiful ending to the story.

I do know my gf's size, or I knew - she recently complained about not being S anymore in the Top, but M. She's been doing a lot of work-out, so I'm pretty sure that's part of the reason, although she only sees fat everywhere. We had a great talk about clothing and styles and self-esteem and upbringing and loving oneself this weekend, initiated by me talking about my conclusions about what Lily should wear and what not. Since she has a 14 year old daughter, it was very interesting to discuss that with her, and see her points on the topic. Thanks to having gone over this topic with you and others, I was able to explain myself to her in a way that she could comprehend my stance about it, the values behind it, and my thoughts. That was really cool.

    I love these photos.

Very thoughtful and touching to get a flower for Smallsteps as well. I'm sure she worked hard all season and it is a fitting end.

I don't think I would be able to buy clothes for my wife. I do my share of the laundry, so knowing the size wouldn't be a big deal and I know she likes black, but I don't think I would be able to guess her style. I don't wear ties nearly as often as I used to and I haven't owned a suit in probably two decades.
