Korean dramas have been gaining significant ground for quite some time now. Personally, I'm not a huge fan, as this is only the third one I've seen. K-dramas are the most prevalent, but there are several titles that fall outside that genre and are truly excellent and impressive, and one example is what I'm here to talk about today. Released about 10 days ago on Netflix, this is a pure horror story with touches of dark fantasy, mystery, and above all, a strong folklore element. This is a major draw for me because it's a country I don't know much about; it's not like Japan, which I could talk about much more. But by incorporating cultural elements from the era of the kings in Korea, it definitely gives it a much cooler and even mystical feel, I would say.
Desde hace un buen tiempo las series coreanas tienen un terreno ganado bastante amplio, personalmente no soy muy fan ya que esta apenas sería la tercera que veo. Los K-dramas son los que más se imponen pero por ahí hay varios títulos que se salen de ese concepto que son realmente buenos e impresionantes y un ejemplo de eso es lo que vengo a hablar hoy. Estrenada hace unos 10 días en Netflix llega una historia de terror puro con tintes de fantasía oscura, misterio y sobretodo con mucho folclore. Esto para mi es un gancho muy grande porque es un país del que conozco poco, no es como Japón del que si pudiese hablar más, pero al introducir cosas culturales netamente de la época de los reyes en Corea sin dudas le da un tinte mucho más cool y hasta místico diría yo.
The plot is quite simple, but along the way, hundreds of things happen that constantly increase the suspense. We have Gu-cheon, a man with two powers or abilities: the ability to see demons in the real world and the ability to cross over into their realm. He is summoned by the king to investigate a curse within the walls of the royal palace that threatens to wipe out the entire royal lineage. Meanwhile, Saeng-gang, the king's daughter, also arrives, possessing a unique power: the ability to hear spirits. It's important to note that this is more of a torment than a blessing for her, as it has caused her many problems with her family, especially with the king, her father.
La trama es bastante simple solo que en el camino pasan cientos de cosas que hacen que el suspenso aumente constantemente. Tenemos a Gu-cheon, un tipo que tiene dos poderes o habilidades, el ser capaz de ver a los demonios en el mundo real y la capacidad de poder cruzar al mundo de dichos demonios. Él es convocado por el rey para que investigue a una maldición que hay entre las paredes del palacio real que está amenazando con eliminar por completo todo el linaje de la realeza. En paralelo también llega Saeng-gang, la hija de este rey que también posee cierto poder: escuchar a los espíritus. Hay que aclarar que esto más que una virtud es un tormento para ella porque le ha traído muchos problemas con su familia, sobretodo con el rey, su padre.
Once they're both at the palace, they agree to hunt down whatever is causing all these deaths and strange phenomena. The deaths in question are linked to the king, hence the urgency of the matter. In the eight episodes of this series, or season—I'm not yet sure if there will be a second season—what predominates is a masterclass in all things related to Korean folklore and legends, especially those that touch on themes like death, the afterlife, and souls and spirits trapped in different worlds. It's truly fascinating to watch, and in my case, a novel experience. It's a very traditional and cultural series that manages to blend that very well with supernatural and fantasy elements. Speaking of the latter, yes, it's a horror story because, while it doesn't quite reach the point of being scary, I think the intention is to introduce darkness and the dark side of these spirits, which, in effect, is what they are: demons filled with resentment.
Una vez ambos están en el palacio se ponen de acuerdo para dar caza a lo que sea que esté ocasionando todas estas muertes y fenómenos extraños. Las muertes en cuestión están ligadas al rey de ahí la urgencia del asunto. En los 8 capítulos que tiene esta serie o temporada, aún no se si habrá segunda temporada, lo que predomina ampliamente es una clase magistral de todo lo que tiene que ver con el folclore y leyendas que rondan en la vida de los coreanos, sobretodo aquellas que tocan temas como la muerte, el paso al más allá, las almas y espíritus que quedan atrapadas en diversos mundos; la verdad es algo muy interesante de ver y en mi caso, novedoso. Es una serie muy tradicional y cultural que logra mezclar muy bien eso con los elementos sobrenaturales y de fantasía. Hablando un poco sobre esto último, si, es una historia de terror porque si bien es cierto no llega a asustar creo que la intención es aportar oscuridad y el lado oscuro de estos espíritus, que en efectos es lo que son, demonios llenos de rencor.
The visual aspect is incredible; the quality of these Korean productions surprises me. The use of CGI here is truly impressive, and the more supernatural scenes where the spiritual and real worlds blend are top-notch. At times, it can be quite graphic because blood is a constant presence. The setting, the costumes—everything is meticulously crafted and well-executed, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the story and making it feel incredibly authentic. This is what I enjoyed most; when a series has so much detail, it's a real pleasure to sit down and watch. I can tell you that getting bored is impossible. Just when you think they've reached the bottom of things, there's a plot twist that completely changes the story, and it's like starting all over again, but without tiring the viewer; everything has a purpose.
La parte que tiene que ver con lo visual es increíble, me sorprende la calidad de estas producciones coreanas. Acá hay un uso del CGI bien impresionante la verdad, las escenas más sobrenaturales en donde se mezcla el mundo espiritual con el real son muy top, por momentos puede ser muy grafica porque la sangre forma parte de todo; ambientación, vestuario, todo está muy cuidado y bien logrado para que seamos capaces de adentrarnos bien en la historia y que todo se vea muy autentico. Esto es de lo que más disfruté, cuando una serie tiene tantos detalles realmente da mucho gusto sentarse a verla. Ya te digo que aburrirte no es posible, cuando crees que llegaron al fondo de todo hay un plot twist que le da la vuelta a la historia y es como volver a comenzar pero ojo, sin cansar al espectador; todo tiene un sentido.
As for the acting, I have to say that the vast majority of the actors are very good, with a high level of performance. The three main characters—the spirit hunter, the princess, and the king—are excellent. We could also mention the queen mother, who is quite a character, and let me tell you, she's much scarier than the spirits we see here. The bottom line is that they are great actors, and the fact that they do K-dramas helps. In short, a spectacular series, very well made, and definitely worth watching. It has great effects, a good story, and you learn more about this culture at the same time. Highly recommended to everyone. For me, it's a solid 9.5/10. I'll leave the trailer here.
En cuanto a las actuaciones decir que la gran mayoría de actores son muy buenos, tienen un nivel interpretativo alto. Los tres principales, el cazador de espíritus, la princesa y el rey actúan muy bien. Por ahí pudiéramos mencionar a la reina madre que es una señora y que amigos, ella da bastante más miedo que los propios espíritus que vemos acá. La conclusión es que son grandes actores, que hagan K-dramas ayuda. En fin, una serie espectacular, muy bien hecha y que merece ser vista. Tiene grandes efectos, buena historia al mismo tiempo que aprendes más de esta cultura. Super recomendada a todos. Para mi es un 9.5/10 absoluto. Les dejo el tráiler por acá.
