Watching a film with such a cast and not having any expectations set it apart is truly difficult. Russell Crowe, whom I recently saw in Nuremberg, is joined by Aaron Paul, Luke Evans, Nina Dobrev, and Teresa Palmer in a film where action, extortion, shady deals, and above all, bad decisions can lead anyone to an undesirable end. Often, we look for these kinds of films simply to disconnect from the daily grind; we know they won't be critically acclaimed or anything like that, but they'll serve as pure entertainment.
Ver una película con semejante elenco y que no te cree expectativas es algo realmente difícil. Russell Crowe, a quien lo vi recientemente en Nuremberg, está acompañado por Aaron Paul, Luke Evans, Nina Dobrev y Teresa Palmer en un film en donde la acción, la extorsión, los malos negocios y sobretodo las malas decisiones pueden llevar a cualquiera a un final no deseado. Muchas veces uno busca estos films para simplemente desconectar del día a día, uno sabe que no serán películas aclamadas ni nada por el estilo pero si que servirán para mero entretenimiento.
The plot is simple because the characters are simple and predictable. Manco Kapak (Crowe) is an Albanian who owns a nightclub. At first, you think he's involved with the Albanian mafia, but no, he's actually a "quiet" guy who only launders money for a cartel. Low profile, or at least that's what he thought. One unfortunate night, a sum of money destined for the cartel is stolen, but who steals it? A poor man (Paul) who is being extorted by a police officer who, in turn, has his eye on Manco. It all ends up being a series of unfortunate events—the robbery and health issues—which ultimately lead our Albanian man to decide to sell his club.
La trama es simple porque tenemos personajes simples y predecibles. Manco Kapak (Crowe) es un albano quien es dueño de un local nocturno. Al principio crees que está en los malos pasos por aquello de la mafia albanesa pero no, realmente es tipo "tranquilo" que lo poco que hace es lavar dinero para un cartel. Bajo perfil o por lo menos eso creía él. Una noche desafortunada le roban una suma de dinero destinada para dicho cartel, pero quien lo roba? - un pobre hombre (Paul) quien está siendo extorsionado por un policía que a su vez tiene los ojos puestos en Manco. Todo termina siendo una serie de eventos desafortunados, el robo y cosas de su salud, lo que al final lleva a que nuestro hombre de Albania decida vender su local.
Meanwhile, Joe Carver (Luke Evans) appears, a potential buyer for the store. He also has another role, but we won't spoil it. Nina Dobrev plays Paul's partner in crime, a very cool character who ends up being more important than expected. The truth is, this is a kind of action-packed police thriller where the business dealings, chases, and the constant pressure of having a "boot on your neck" telling you what to do make the plot dynamic, with a touch of comedy—because there really is some—and a desire to demonstrate that anything can be achieved through extortion and the hope that nothing goes wrong.
A todas estas por ahí aparece Joe Carver (Luke Evans) quien es un posible comprador del local. También tiene otro rol pero no vamos a caer en spoiler. El papel de Nina Dobrev es el de la acompañante de Paul en los robos, un personaje muy cool y que al final termina teniendo una importancia más grande de lo esperado. La realidad es que esto es una especie de thriller de acción y policiaco en donde los negocios, persecuciones y el estar constantemente presionado por una "bota en el cuello" diciéndote que hacer hace que la trama sea dinámica, con una ligera comedia porque la verdad es que si la hay y un afán de demostrar que todo se puede lograr mediante la bendita extorsión y pretender que nada salga mal.
The story is very linear, sometimes even predictable, but it does have a couple of interesting plot twists. I don't think they're the best, but at least they help keep the film from being too flat and give it some depth. An expected ending? Maybe, or at least it's typical when it comes to fights against cartels and people of interest. There are some good action scenes, decent at best; characters who make bad decisions, either due to the script or because their personalities are so unique, and in the end, it's a very common story, one seen in other films, but it always achieves its goal: to entertain.
La historia es super lineal, a veces peca de predecible pero también es cierto que tiene un par de plot twist interesantes, no creo que sean los mejores pero por lo menos ayudan a que la película no termine siendo tan plana y tenga algo de profundidad. Un final esperado? - puede ser o por lo menos es el típico en lo que a luchas contra los carteles y personas de interés se refiere. Hay buenas escenas de acción, decentes como mucho; personajes que toman malas decisiones ya sea por un tema de guion o porque sus personalidades son muy particulares y al final es una historia muy común y vista por todos en otros films pero que siempre logran su objetivo: entretener.
In conclusion, we have a film that's perfect for a night when there's absolutely nothing else on. It's entertaining if you pay attention to what might happen or the plot twists, but that's about it—nothing too sophisticated or extraordinary. Good acting, good atmosphere, but the plot isn't great; it's very basic. I give it a 6/10. I think the cast alone makes it worth watching. It's under two hours long. I've included the trailer below.
En conclusión tenemos un film que es el elegido para ver una noche en donde no haya NADA más para ver. Si entretiene y estás atento a lo que pueda pasar o a las vueltas que vaya a dar la trama pero hasta ahí, nada muy sofisticado ni extraordinario. Buenas actuaciones, buen ambiente, la trama no tanto, muy básica. Le doy un 6/10. Creo que por elenco merece ser vista. No llega a las dos horas. Les dejo el tráiler por acá abajo.
