Hello

Hablar de mis pasiones es algo que me encanta porque en el transcurso de mi vida me han generado mucha felicidad y bienestar. Son muchas en realidad amo caminar al aire libre, me gusta cantar, cocinar, sembrar plantas de todo tipo y muchas más; pero hoy solo quiero referirme a la mas maravillosa de todas “las manualidades”.

I love talking about my passions because, throughout my life, they’ve brought me so much happiness and well-being. There are actually many of them—I love walking outdoors, I like singing, cooking, planting all kinds of plants, and so much more—but today I just want to talk about the most wonderful one of all: “crafts.”

Desde que era muy niña tengo recuerdos de como jugaba a crear cosas con desechos de basura, con recortes de tela, con madera, flores, entre otros. Tal vez mi madre se dio cuenta de aquel gusto que en unas vacaciones me envió a la casa de una señora que era costurera y allí di mis primeros pasos en el tejido, la costura y el patchwork.

Ever since I was a little girl, I have memories of playing at creating things with trash, fabric scraps, wood, flowers, and other materials. Perhaps my mother noticed this interest of mine, because one vacation she sent me to stay with a woman who was a seamstress, and there I took my first steps in knitting, sewing, and patchwork.

Luego de grande me di cuenta que mi padre también aportó lo suyo en mi ingenio porque recuerdo como hacia trabajos a gran escala con la madera y también con unas plantas que crecen en la laguna llamada “Enea”.

When I grew up, I realized that my father also played a part in shaping my ingenuity, because I remember how he would create large-scale projects out of wood and also using a plant that grows in the lagoon called “Enea”.

Con la madera hacia desde un trompo para jugar, hasta una silla o escaleras y con la enea creaba esteras para las camas. Siempre me gustaba verle trabajar, ver como pulía la madera, como tallaba y con sus propias manos creaba cosas para la casa, la cocina, la sala.

De mi madre aprendí más de jardinería, costura, cocina y decoración. Todos esos aprendizajes al final se juntaron y me ayudaron poco a poco en mi vida.

With wood, he’d make everything from a spinning top to play with, to a chair or a ladder, and with the cattail, he’d weave mats for the beds. I always loved watching him work—seeing how he sanded the wood, how he carved it, and how he used his own hands to create things for the house, the kitchen, and the living room.

From my mother, I learned more about gardening, sewing, cooking, and decorating. All those lessons eventually came together and helped me little by little throughout my life.

Luego fui creciendo y fui aprendiendo mas cosas, recuerdo mucho a mi prima Marlene quien me enseño el arte de tejer en crochet, mi prima Aiglen me enseñó costura y mi prima Lourdes me enseñó a dibujar.

Así que como pueden ver estuve rodeada de las personas correctas que aportaron su granito de arena para que día a día fuese feliz haciendo lo que me gustaba “crear con mis manos”.

As I grew up, I learned more and more things. I have fond memories of my cousin Marlene, who taught me the art of crocheting; my cousin Aiglen taught me how to sew; and my cousin Lourdes taught me how to draw.

So, as you can see, I was surrounded by the right people who each did their part to make sure that, day after day, I was happy doing what I loved: “creating with my hands.”

Fue gracias a esa infancia bonita, a ese estimulo de las personas que me querían, que hoy en día soy lo que soy. Así que cuando inesperadamente tuve que aceptar mi jubilación y quede en el limbo, rápidamente supe que el camino que debía tomar era el de poner mi ingenio a producir, así que puse mis manos a la obra y con el dinero de mi jubilación compre maquinas, agujas, hilos de tejer, telas, hice cursos para perfeccionar las técnicas y poco a poco mi pasatiempo favorito paso de ser un hobby a mi fuente ingresos.

It was thanks to that wonderful childhood and the encouragement of the people who loved me that I am who I am today. So when I unexpectedly had to accept my retirement and found myself in limbo, I quickly knew that the path I had to take was to put my creativity to work. So I got to work, and with my retirement money, I bought machines, needles, yarn, and fabric; I took courses to perfect my techniques; and little by little, my favorite pastime went from being a hobby to my source of income.

Durante mucho tiempo hice dinero para ayudar en los gastos de mi casa y además hice feliz a muchas personas con sus encargos. Quien te iba a decir que ese amor por las manualidades se iba a convertir en el futuro en mi trabajo.

For a long time, I earned money to help cover my household expenses, and I also made many people happy by fulfilling their orders. Who would have thought that my love for crafts would one day become my job?

Hoy en día lo sigo realizando y me enfoco mas por los bordados y el tejido de bebé. Ningún trabajo se parece a otro, por eso cada día soy muy feliz en hacerlo y doy gracias a Dios por haberme dado la inteligencia de aprender cada puntada.

Aun sigo cantando, sigo con mi jardinería, sigo aprendiendo nuevas recetas y espero nunca nunca cansarme de tejer, bordar y coser.

Today, I’m still doing it, and I focus more on embroidery and baby knits. No two projects are alike, which is why I’m so happy doing this every day, and I thank God for giving me the intelligence to learn every stitch.

I’m still singing, I’m still gardening, I’m still learning new recipes, and I hope I never, ever get tired of knitting, embroidering, and sewing.
