Hello, dear Ladies of Hive! I hope you're all doing very well. For this community contest, we have questions from @priyanarc on topics related to the role of women in society.

Do you think society expects women to be strong all the time, even when they need support?

I don't know if society thinks women are supposed to be strong all the time, because I think the image they have of us is that we're more emotional and tend to be overwhelmed by these issues. So it's not something they expect, but I do feel that we're expected to handle everything and more, as if we had to carry the weight of the world on our shoulders. More has always been expected of us than of anyone else, and that's a reality.

It’s no longer just expected that we fulfill our roles in the home—caring for our families and doing household chores—but we’re also expected to excel at our jobs and to be great leaders and mentors to the younger generations. So I feel that instead of our burden getting lighter, it’s actually become more all-encompassing. Of course, I’m happy about the rights we’ve won and the ground we’re gaining—elbow-to-elbow and kick-for-kick—through sheer willpower and by making our voices heard, but at the same time, I feel that now we’re all being measured against this new standard. So we’re expected to handle everything and more—never less—and that, too, can be exhausting.

I don’t want to have to be strong all the time; I want to be able to fall apart and feel that the world doesn’t stop because of it. To be honest, there are tasks and solutions that—if they didn’t come from me, if tomorrow I got tired and said I didn’t want to do them—I don’t know who would do them. Probably no one, and that’s what makes me think that, yes, we’re expected to be strong all the time—to fall apart, but then to get back up and start over. And you know what? We’re really good at this.

Support is always necessary and welcome; just because we can handle everything doesn’t mean we have to do it alone—it’s essential to have a strong support network. In fact, we shouldn’t even have to ask for support—it should come naturally when we’re overwhelmed and at our limit. There’s nothing like feeling seen and valued by our peers.

Can a woman be happy with her life even if it doesn't look the way she once imagined?

I’m convinced that’s true. We build happiness day by day, and what we wanted a year ago is probably not the same as what we want now. My life is nothing like I imagined it would be as I was growing up, but that doesn’t make me any less happy. I love everything I’m building and learning about myself and the world around me. I may not have everything I want, but I can see what I do have and be proud of who I am so far. I’m also certain that the journey continues, and I’ll eventually reach that moment when I look back and see everything I’ve been through with immense satisfaction.

I have reasons for joy and happiness in my life, and that is answer enough. Yes, I believe that despite the sorrows and pains, despite the burdens we carry—including many that aren’t even ours to bear, but that’s just how we are—we can still be happy.
