Hello, friends of this wonderful Womentribe community! I hope you’re all doing great. In another inspiring post by @syllem, we come across one of the exercises she invites us to do after reading a book. This time, the topic is forgiveness.

It’s a topic that brings me some relief to read about because I feel like there are situations I try to forgive, but I realize I still harbor some resentment over them, and that might make me feel guilty. But when I think about it, it’s not something that stops me from moving on with my life, nor do I dwell on the pain—they’re just wounds that haven’t fully healed, though I’m sure they will someday. This gives me the strength to keep trying to put things behind me.

It’s also true that it depends on the offense we’ve experienced; I feel that there are situations that don’t deserve our forgiveness, and much of this has to do with the person who hurt us. It was their mistake, not ours; it’s not up to us to free them from that burden if we don’t feel that way. I realize that I can move on, be happy, and live a fulfilling life, even if the memory comes flooding back every now and then. When that happens, I acknowledge it and keep moving forward.

A few months ago, someone apologized to me for behaving badly, and I told them I accepted the apology but that I couldn’t continue the relationship. It’s a situation that keeps coming back to my mind over and over again. The truth is that, despite what I told them, I don’t think I’ve been able to let go of it completely—and the reason is that, even though I’ve forgiven them, I can’t forget what they did to me. In any case, I’m at peace with myself because I had nothing to do with this—I wasn’t the one at fault.

Then there are other wounds inflicted by people who are very dear to me, like my parents, which I don’t understand and don’t agree with. There are actions that don’t deserve to be forgiven because there’s nothing to justify them. This doesn’t mean I hate my parents or am angry with them—on the contrary, I love them. But they hurt me in some way, and it’s not something that will heal easily. However, we have a good relationship, and I recognize that they are human beings like everyone else, and that they can make mistakes because they aren’t perfect. So I choose to move forward even though there are still issues to resolve. I love them, and I’m always there for them.

I feel like I could forgive easily—at least in words. I believe that true forgiveness runs deeper and requires a higher state of consciousness. Still, I’m at peace because I don’t dwell on bitterness and I go about my life as usual; I have moments of great happiness and peace, and other more turbulent periods, but not because I’m harboring any resentment. When it comes to forgiveness, I feel that the greatest guilt lies with the person who committed the offense; that guilt is something that could end up hurting me much more than being the one who was hurt. But the important thing is to be able to ask for forgiveness, acknowledge the guilt, and act accordingly.
