Trust is the foundation of personal, relationship and collective stability; it is what gives us the peace of mind to move forward and to be ourselves without needing to copy anyone else. But this foundation, which at first glance appears strong and secure, often harbours almost imperceptible fissures – cracks hidden beneath the surface which, whilst not immediately disturbing our peace of mind, ultimately bring about an abrupt collapse, leaving us with no room to defend ourselves. These cracks, known as mistrust, exist everywhere, however selfless we may feel.

When the blunder emerges—whatever it may be—pain embraces us alongside resentment (because a single emotion never dwells here alone). It feels as though a furious gale is raging inside us whilst, at the very centre of the storm, ‘revenge’ is coldly plotted.

We tend to attribute mistrust mainly to relationships, where nowadays anyone who feels jealous is immediately labelled ‘toxic’, when perhaps — and only perhaps — this is nothing more than a direct reflection of a traumatic event that occurred at some point in their past.

That is why, when infidelity comes to light and the person is caught red-handed, the first instinct is to apologise: a word devoid of any real meaning when, behind the act itself, there lies only the cowardice of failing to admit in time that the love had ended.

As Dr Emilio Ríos said in his post, a couple was heavily criticised for getting back together after an affair. The fact is that, in such cases, society seems to turn into a court of law by its very nature: a courtroom where everyone dresses as a judge, with no defence lawyers in sight, all lined up to attack the guilty parties.

In the classic narrative of infidelity, there are always two clear roles: the guilty party and the victim. However, when forgiveness comes into play, the narrative shifts cruelly in the eyes of others: the guilty party now walks alongside the ‘masochist’ – the person whom those around them immediately label as someone with no self-respect, devoid of worth for choosing to stay close to the one who betrayed them.

But behind that forgiveness, the stories are never identical.

In addition to trust and mistrust, we must also factor in love and hate. Whilst trust reigns in the home, love flourishes; but when mistrust arrives with its baggage, hate emerges, creating rifts that not only hurt the one who was cheated on, but—no matter how hard one tries to avoid it—ultimately affect the most innocent: the children.

Cecilia lives near my home; she has been married for over forty years, during which time she has endured her husband’s repeated infidelities. This has made her the target of the neighbourhood’s mockery; cruelly nicknamed for her ‘horns’, she walks with her eyes downcast past neighbours who feel entitled to judge and dictate what she ought to do, even though they have never walked in her shoes. Only she knows the truth behind her forgiveness: whether it is sincere, feigned, or born of sheer fear. After all, none of those who point the finger at her will provide her with her daily bread if she decides to separate.

1000039896.png

At the end of the day, we all cook our own beans at home: some of us like them nice and soft, others al dente, and others don’t even like them at all. Therefore, every decision made within those four walls must be respected, because who are we to meddle where we’re not wanted?

Let’s remember that no one is spared from taxes or infidelity, since infidelity also involves having secret conversations, looking at photos without anyone seeing, and dreaming of a family that isn’t part of the same household.

On this occasion, I’ve focused solely on the topic of ‘couples’, but on another occasion I’ll delve deeper into mistrust within families, friendships and the workplace, because mistrust is a little bug that hops from one place to another, laying its eggs deep within us without us even realising when it happened.
