Why do people look at their phones whilst they’re waiting?

1000047661.jpg

Have you ever asked yourself this question? And perhaps as you read these lines, you’ve smiled slightly, as you’ve surely done this more times than you can remember. But behind this simple, everyday act lies a deeper meaning, which I’m going to share with you.

Perhaps the logical answer would be ‘boredom’, as waiting does that to all of us, especially when we’re waiting on our own; but NO, it’s not just that – there’s something beyond simple boredom.

And this raises a second question: in order to understand this behaviour, we need to unravel it all. So, why are we afraid of boredom? And I’m sure you’ve tilted your head to one side at this point as a sign of internal reflection – am I right?

Surely the response to the fear of boredom would be: ‘I don’t know, I hadn’t realised’ or a strong denial along the lines of ‘I’m not afraid of being bored’. But are you one hundred per cent sure of that?

But you needn’t worry, as it happens to all of us. The thing is, when boredom sets in, it’s because silence has taken hold, and with the absence of noise we all start to listen to ourselves – that inner voice that begins as a murmur before turning into an annoying echo.

So, what happens when we’re alone with our thoughts? And if your answer is that we think too much – that is, we overthink every little thing, sound, action, scent – that’s when the stress sets in: the fear that we haven’t acted in the right way or at the right moment.

In this, we find something curious and absurd: we spend half our lives striving for silence, and the other half striving to flee from that very silence.

1000047662.jpg

The thing is, silence in itself doesn’t give us answers; it only presents us with questions, one after another, each one harder than the last, cutting straight to the bone; questions that often have no answer and generate even more doubts and fears. So we flee from silence because we don’t like the answers that — surprise, surprise! — come from within ourselves, as if, in some way, a very deep part of our being had turned into a kind of enemy.

So we focus on filling our silence with noise, and although we often say we like to enjoy solitude, it’s not the same as saying we enjoy silence, because we’re always trying to drown it out with music – have you noticed that?

1000047660.jpg

And now that I’ve told you all this, tell me: what would you do? Would you ignore the silence or would you listen to it? After all, those inner questions just keep shouting louder and louder until they’re heard.

This isn’t a challenge, but I cordially invite you to take five minutes to reflect on how well you can tolerate silence, or whether you drown it out so as not to hear your own inner questions.

  • Hola, saludos.
