Uruguay - A low-cost day in Punta del Este, one of the most elegant and expensive beaches in Uruguay. / Un día de bajo costo en Punta del Este, una de las playas más elegantes y costosas de Uruguay. 😃❤️

When you think of Punta del Este in Uruguay, the first thing that comes to mind is “expensive and exclusive” (or at least that’s what we were led to believe in Argentina). Whenever television shows talked about the summer vacations of major celebrities, they always mentioned this coastal city in our neighboring country. What I didn’t know back then was that one day I would be able to enjoy these very same beaches without having anywhere near the amount of money those famous people have. Getting to Punta del Este was an added bonus to our getaway in Uruguay, and it was the relaxing day I needed to fully recharge my energy 😃.

Cuando uno piensa en Punta del Este en Uruguay, lo primero que se le viene a la cabeza es "costoso y exclusivo" (o al menos eso es lo que nos hicieron creer en Argentina). Cuando en la televisión hablaban de las vacaciones de verano de las grandes celebridades, siempre mencionaban esta ciudad costera en el país vecino. Lo que yo no sabía en ese momento es que en algún momento de mi vida podría disfrutar de estas mismas playas, sin llegar a tener todo el dinero que tienen esas personas famosas. Llegar hasta Punta del Este fue un plus en nuestra escapada por Uruguay, y fue el día relajante que necesitaba para terminar de recargar mis energías 😃.

After starting our day very early by leaving Piriápolis, my cousin drove his truck another 40 km to reach Punta del Este. The change in atmosphere between these cities was very noticeable, as the closer we got, the more we could see the luxurious buildings and the much more elegant surroundings. Like all tourists, our first stop was at La Mano, the iconic finger sculpture on this beach. This is the kind of postcard you have to post on your social media if you want your friends to know you were in Punta del Este, but of course, afterward we wanted to enjoy the beach.

Después de iniciar nuestro día muy temprano saliendo de Piriápolis, mi primo manejó su camioneta por 40 km más para llegar hasta Punta del Este. El cambio de aires entre estas ciudades fue muy evidente, ya que a medida que nos acercábamos, se iban notando los edificios lujosos y el ambiente mucho más elegante. Como todos los turistas, nuestra primera parada fue en la mano, la típica escultura de dedos de esta playa. Esta es la típica postal que tenes que postear en tus redes sociales si quieres que tus amigos sepan que estuviste en Punta del Este, pero por supuesto que después queríamos disfrutar de la playa.

The day we visited Punta del Este turned out to be a perfect beach day. It was February, the middle of summer, and the temperature was more than pleasant for spending time in the water. Because of the large number of tourists during the long weekend, it took us a while to find a good place to park the car, but as soon as we did, we hurried to set up our picnic on the sand. Since this trip was planned as a low-cost getaway, there were no lunches out or many extra expenses: all we had to do was stop by a local grocery store to buy some bread, cold cuts, and a little ice for all the drinks we had bought at home before crossing the border.

El día que nos tocó para visitar Punta del Este fue un día de playa perfecto. Era febrero, el pleno verano, y la temperatura era más que agradable para pasar el rato en el agua. Debido a la gran cantidad de turistas por el fin de semana largo, nos costó un poco encontrar un buen lugar para estacionar el auto, pero ni bien lo hicimos, corrimos a armar nuestro picnic en el arena. Como este viaje estaba pensado low cost, no hubo nada de salidas a almorzar ni hicimos muchos gastos: solo bastó con ir a un almacen a comprar pan, fiambre y un poco de hielo para todas las bebidas que habíamos comprado en casa antes de cruzar la frontera.

I spent the afternoon enjoying the water, which was much warmer and clearer than what we’re used to on the Buenos Aires coast. Between the water temperature, the light-colored sand, and the view of the elegant city, I understood why wealthy people choose to vacation there. However, unlike our coastline, this beach seemed a little narrower to me, although I’m sure that is more than made up for by its many kilometers of coastline. We spent almost the entire afternoon in the water until we headed back to Piriápolis, because we still wanted to go on an excursion to another hill. After all, my cousin has much more energy for doing things than I thought he did.

Aproveché la tarde para pasar el rato en el agua, que estaba mucho más cálida y cristalina que la que nosotros acostumbramos en la costa bonaerense. Entre esa temperatura del agua, el arena clara y la vista a la ciudad elegante, entendí por qué la gente con dinero elige vacacionar ahí. Sin embargo, a diferencia de nuestra costa, esta me pareció un poco más angosta, aunque seguro se compensa con la cantidad de kilómetros que tiene. Pasamos casi toda la tarde en el agua, hasta que emprendimos el regreso a Piriápolis porque todavía queríamos hacer una excursión a otro cerro: al final, mi primo tiene mucha más energía para hacer cosas que la que yo creía.

What I liked about this city was that it was clearly well-maintained, and it was obvious that people who choose to stay at those luxurious hotels need to have enough money to afford them. Just taking a quick look online, these luxurious hotels start at around $150 per night and can cost more than $1,000 for the most high-end options. However, staying at a $10-per-night campsite, we were able to visit the same beach and swim in the same water as all those people, so I was happy with my Instagram-worthy beach day.

Lo que me gustó de esta ciudad es que se notaba que estaba bien mantenida y que efectivamente la gente que elige hospedarse en esos lujosos hoteles, tiene que tener el dinero suficiente para hacerlo. Solo echando un vistazo rápido en internet, estos lujosos hoteles arrancan en $150 la noche, llegando a costar más de $1000 para las versiones más tope de gama. Sin embargo, nosotros hospedados en un camping de $10 la noche pudimos visitar la misma playa y meternos en la misma agua que toda esa gente, así que estuve contenta por mi día de playa instagrameable.

I really think we were blessed to have a few days of pure summer weather during our getaway to Uruguay. This weather allowed us to do all kinds of things in our neighboring country and get the most out of our quick, somewhat budget-friendly trip. It’s true that, with the current state of the Argentine economy, traveling around Uruguay can be expensive, but with a little ingenuity, you can always find a way to do it on the cheap. I thought the beaches in Punta del Este were truly beautiful, and I would love to come back with more time: eating a cold-cut sandwich with those views made every kilometer we traveled worth it ❤️.

Pienso que realmente fuimos bendecidos al tener unos días de puro verano en nuestra escapada a Uruguay. Este clima nos permitió hacer de todo en el país vecino, y obtener lo mejor del viaje express y de un poco bajo presupuesto. Es cierto que para nuestra economía argentina, viajar por Uruguay puede resultar caro, pero con un poco de ingenio, siempre se puede encontrar la manera de hacerlo barato. Estas playas en Punta del Este me parecieron realmente hermosas y me encantaría volver con más tiempo: comer un sandwich de fiambre con esas vistas hizo que todos los kilómetros recorridos valieran la pena ❤️.
