Our long-weekend getaway to Uruguay had much more to offer than we could have ever asked for. During the five days we spent traveling, we were able to do so many things, in addition to visiting Piriápolis Beach, which had been our main goal. After making it all the way to Punta del Este, the farthest point we reached, we slowly began our journey back home. But even on the way back, we still had things left to see, such as the summit of Cerro El Toro, from where we would have a great view of the Piriápolis coastline 😃.

Nuestra escapada de fin de semana largo a Uruguay tuvo mucho más de lo que le podíamos haber pedido. En los cinco días que estuvimos de viaje, pudimos hacer un montón de cosas, además de visitar la playa de Piriápolis, que era nuestra idea principal. Después de haber llegado hasta Punta del Este, lo más lejos que fuimos, lentamente emprendimos el regreso a casa. Pero incluso en la vuelta todavía nos quedaban cosas para ver, como la Cima del Cerro El Toro, desde donde tendríamos una muy buena vista de la costa de Piria 😃.

Finding some elevation in Uruguay’s coastal area was a pleasant surprise for me. I thought this trip would be a relaxing beach getaway, but it even included a bit of hiking. After returning from Punta del Este, my cousin took my aunt and me to El Toro Municipal Park so we could have a little more adventure near the end of our trip. The problem was that my aunt hadn’t brought sneakers, only sandals, so I gave her mine and set off on the hike wearing flip-flops.

Haber encontrado algo de elevaciones en la zona costera de Uruguay fue algo que me sorprendió gratamente. Pensé que este paseo se trataría de uno relajado de playa, pero hasta incluyó un poco de trekking. Después de haber vuelto de Punta del Este, mi primo nos llevó a mi tía y a mí al Parque Municipal El Toro, para que tengamos un poco más de aventura casi al final de nuestro viaje. El problema fue que mi tía no había llevado zapatillas, solo sandalias, así que le cedí las mías y yo emprendí la caminata en ojotas.

This hill was actually quite small, standing at a little over 250 meters high, so I assumed we would reach the top fairly quickly. However, at the beginning of the trail, we came across a rather steep staircase, which left my aunt quite tired after a day that had started very early. She decided she wouldn’t be able to keep up with us, so she stayed behind to rest on a bench next to a large bull-shaped sculpture, while my cousin and I continued up the trail.

Este cerro era realmente pequeño, su altura era un poco más de 250 metros, así que supuse que lo haríamos bastante rápido. Sin embargo, al inicio del sendero te encontrabas con una escalera bastante empinada, la cual cansó bastante a mi tía después de un día que había empezado muy temprano. Ella decidió que no iba a poder seguirnos el ritmo, así que se quedó descansando en un asiento al lado de una gran escultura con forma de toro, y mi primo y yo continuamos camino arriba.

At that point, I should have been a little smarter and asked her to give me my sneakers back, but I was so excited to keep climbing that I continued on my way in flip-flops without even thinking about it. Luckily, the trail was short, although steep and full of roots, but it was almost effortless because everything was dry. There were two summits on the hill, but we only visited one because we didn’t want to leave my aunt alone for too long. Of course, we chose to go to the higher one.

En ese punto yo tendría que haber sido un poco más inteligente y pedir que me devolviera mis zapatillas, pero estaba tan emocionada por seguir subiendo que continué mi camino en ojotas sin darme cuenta. Por suerte, el camino fue corto, aunque empinado y lleno de raíces, pero casi sin dificultad porque estaba todo seco. Habían dos cimas el en cerro, pero solo visitamos una porque no queríamos dejar tanto tiempo sola a mi tía. Por supuesto, elegimos ir a la más alta.

The summit of Cerro El Toro offered some great views of Piriápolis, although by the time we arrived, the sun was already setting and created a blinding reflection over the Río de la Plata. Since the sun sets over the water from this part of the map, that was a bit of a “downside,” but we still had 360-degree views of the surrounding area. When we reached the summit, my cousin surprised me by revealing that he had brought some beers, so we toasted to our trip. Of course, we later toasted with my aunt as well, but that was our reward for the express hike.

La Cima del Cerro Toro regalaba unas buenas vistas de Piriápolis, aunque para el momento de nuestra llegada, el sol ya estaba bajando y producía un gran reflejo enceguecedor sobre el Río de la Plata. Como en esta parte del mapa, el sol cae sobre el agua, esto fue un punto "negativo", pero igualmente teníamos vista 360 hacia los demás lugares. Cuando llegamos a la cima, mi primo me sorprendió con que había llevado unas cervezas, así que brindamos por este paseo. Obviamente más tarde también brindamos con mi tía, pero esa fue nuestra recompensa por el trekking express.

We ended that day by trying to dance rock along the Piriápolis waterfront until night fell and it was time to have dinner and go to sleep. The next day, we packed up our campsite early and spent almost the entire day in the car, driving back to the city of Gualeguaychú, in Entre Ríos, Argentina. We spent the night there in a small apartment, prepared dinner, and got up early the following day to finish the journey home. It was already a workday, so we arrived before noon to make it to work that afternoon. I think we made the most of our time because we managed to do so many things, many more than I had expected. That’s what I love most about traveling: there’s always an element of pleasant surprise that never fails to make the experience better ❤️.

Ese día lo terminamos intentando bailar rock en la costanera de Piriápolis hasta que se hizo de noche y fue hora de cenar y dormir. Al día siguiente, levantamos temprano nuestro campamento y pasamos casi todo el día en el auto manejando de regreso hasta la ciudad de Gualeguaychú, ya en Entre Ríos, Argentina. Ahí pasamos la noche en un pequeño departamento, preparamos la cena y al otro día nos levantamos temprano para terminar el camino a casa. Ya era día laboral, así que llegamos antes del mediodía para cumplir con nuestros trabajos a la tarde. Pienso que aprovechamos el tiempo más que bien porque pudimos hacer muchísimas cosas, muchas más de la que yo pensaba: eso es lo que más me gusta de viajar, que siempre hay una cuota de sorpresa para bien que nunca falla ❤️.
