A visit to the iconic Plaza de la Resistencia Indígena.

Warm greetings to all my dear travelling friends from all over the world; it’s a pleasure to say hello to you all this Monday, at the start of the week.

I paid a visit to the famous square known to all Maravinos as the ‘Plaza de los Cachos’, but its real name is the “Plaza de la Resistencia Indígena”. It has recently been restored, with each of its areas refurbished to include better planters, paintings and illustrations, and it is now in excellent condition. Situated right on Padilla’s main avenue, it has, in a way, a humorous name, but it was created to pay tribute to the indigenous people.

It is important to know a little about the history of this place, which was founded in 1973 to pay tribute to Andrés Eloy Blanco’s ode to Hispanic heritage. Due to the highly controversial name this square had – ‘Plaza de los Cachos’ – it was recently decided, at its reopening, to give it a different name: ‘Plaza de la Resistencia Indígena’, but we already know that it was created to honour the indigenous peoples and Hispanic heritage of our country, as, as we know, our country is rich in diverse ethnic and cultural roots.

What struck me most about this square is just how picturesque it is, as it has been filled with so many colours, but the most curious thing is that there is a large tree in the middle of it, which has a strangely human-like shape. It is quite impressive how nature can express its wonder; even though it has no flowers or leaves, it still stands tall. The square features various landmarks, such as a house, benches and some colourful letters spelling out ‘Maracaibo’ in very striking colours.

Just as there is a sculpture in the centre of the square commemorating the Indigenous Resistance – painted in a very vibrant, intense orange colour, which gives it a spectacular look – there are also numerous flowerbeds with different types of plants, including ‘beautiful at eleven’ flowers and wild plants, as well as larger plants. There is also a park, which serves as an outdoor gym where people can exercise.

Finally, it’s a space that also features information boards; I absolutely loved every single area this square has to offer – if I lived nearby, I’d definitely visit it. Thank you very much, fellow travellers, for reading my post.

that tree with the human-like shape sounds really fascinating to see in the middle of a city square. it is nice that they restored the place while still keeping its interesting history in mind

  • A very lovely and picturesque square that pays tribute to one of the most significant dates on our continent. Best regards, @noelyss
