How pleasant it is to select a film with only its title as a reference and find in it a whole world of references that have belonged to your experiences, events that marked your childhood and that make you look at the past with a certain nostalgia while reliving it with a unique joy because there are unforgettable moments with your family and the elements that identify your generation.

Richard Linklater, worthy son of the 60's, brings us Apollo 10 ½. A Space Childhood, which he wrote and directed. Even though it is a film with many autobiographical elements, it still has a touch of fantasy, of science fiction, but, let's be honest, what boy or girl of that time who saw on July 20, 1969, through the TV screens, the arrival of man on the moon did not dream, imagine and fantasize about being an astronaut.

I remember very clearly an image similar to the one presented by Linklater. My mom, my aunt and the five children sitting in front of the screen full of excitement waiting for that man to get out of the ship and step on the moon, at that time we lived in Caracas and an aunt who lived in Maracay immediately after the great step of humanity called to say that this was a lie, possibly she did not use the word "montage" but it was what she suggested, she found it literally incredible that this had happened, hahahaha, I, fascinated, until well into adolescence, did not stop dreaming of being the first woman to step on the lunar soil.

Back to the movie, Apollo 10 ½. A Space Childhood is a cartoon movie, where the characters are not caricatured and I loved that, it gives the feature film an important seriousness in terms of content and the message it shows, I feel it fills it with reality and truth, matters of perception.

On the other hand, let's say that there are two parallel plots, one that contextualizes the moment with a lot of details about what was happening in the world and the other is the imaginary story of the boy who goes to the moon. But, do not imagine a documentary, or at least not a conventional documentary, because if someone is interested in knowing the life of the 60's, Apollo 10 ½, is perfect for it, with a dynamic and witty narration in the voice of the charismatic, Jack Black, in the role of adult Stan who is the one who narrates the story.

Let's talk about Stan

Stan (Milo Coy, child voice) is 10 years old, lives in Texas near NASA, his father like most of the neighbors worked in this institution. He is the youngest of 6 children, he studies at the local school, he has many friends and he is very tough, so he is often punished at school and gets his good spanking because at that time the rights of the child were not yet in force.

One day two officials show up at school with the idea of recruiting a child for a top secret mission: to send him to the moon before the final mission of Apollo 11 that put man on the satellite of the earth, hence the name of the film. Stan accepts the mission which is so secret that even his parents can't know about it. While his training takes place, he tells us about the social experience.

The hippies and the fear they aroused in adults, the Vietnam War and its incongruities, the social struggles for the rights of blacks (so called at the time, today Afro-descendants), the birth control pill and its repercussions, the Cold War, conspiracy theories, the environmental problem, extraterrestrial life. Everything named or suggested, it does not stop at any point, but only serves as a frame of reference for world events.

To do so, he also makes use of music, a repertoire of the time with which it is inevitable to make a connection, since it was the music we listened to on the radio stations. Themes such as Aquarius, Down in the corner or Sugar Sugar Sugar by The Archies, with this song I was delighted because that was the first album and like one of Stan's sisters, I listened to it over and over again, hahahaha.

The common and infallible places: the drive-in movie theater, bowling, ice cream parlors, trips to the beach with the family and, on the other hand, that crowd of people in a single vehicle.

Of course, it also shows us the artifacts that dominated the family scene: the slide projectors, I remember that in my house there was one, from time to time my mother assembled it, mounted on the carousel the slides of some trip and projected them on a wall, a beautiful memory.

The radio as a privileged instrument that put you in contact with the music that was produced in the world and the black and white television with its antenna of whiskers that you moved them carefully to find the signal and the exciting arrival of color to the TV. And here, Stan adult, stands out making a list of those series that became famous and endure over time, see if any resonates with you: Batman (the Comic), Bewitched, My Beautiful Genie, Mission Impossible, Bonanza, The Time Tunnel and the incomparable in star travel, Star Trek.

Apolo 2.jpg

Whatever I tell you about Apollo 10½. A Childhood in Space, falls short because it is a look into the past, where time, as they say: works miracles and we keep what gives us a good taste, plus reality and fantasy are perfectly meshed making it a great adventure that grabs you.

The film is excellent. If you are from the 60's or close to this era you will find in every detail a moment of reunion with your past that may give you a little nostalgia but also joy and you will enjoy it greatly. If you don't know the elements that defined that historical moment it gives you the opportunity to take a look at everything it meant and if you want the story of an adventure you will also find it, so don't miss it.
