After wrapping up Widows Bay, I wanted to dive back into a comedy series, but this time without any dark humor or horror elements. I noticed Margo's Got Money Troubles trending, starring Elle Fanning alongside Michelle Pfeiffer, and I was really curious to see how two actresses I mainly know for their dramatic roles would perform in a comedy.
Margo (Elle Fanning) is a young literature student in college who seems to have a real talent for writing—or at least that's what one of her professors leads her to believe. He seduces her, making her fall for him, which eventually leads to an unexpected pregnancy. With a wife and kids of his own—not to mention his job on the line—he has no intention of bringing a baby into the world and tries to persuade Margo to get an abortion. She refuses and decides to go through with the pregnancy. Once her baby arrives, she quickly discovers that while motherhood has its rewards, it is brutally tough and relentless, and she simply doesn't have the money to face it.
All of this happens just in the first episode. As you can tell, it's not a storyline we haven't seen before, so I had to keep watching to see where things were heading before deciding if I was fully hooked on the premise. The second episode sealed the deal for me. I really started empathizing with her situation; it brought back memories of how tough becoming a parent for the first time really is, and how, over time, we can look back and laugh at just how difficult those first few months with a baby actually are.
The comedy in this story stems directly from tragedy. Having a child is a blessing, and you'll undoubtedly love them, but the circumstances surrounding their arrival—especially when it happens out of nowhere, completely upending your plans and reality—can certainly feel tragic. The humor also springs from the family dynamics: how parents step in to support a single mother, and how Margo will tackle her financial struggles to cover her child's needs. From what I understand, her approach gets pretty original, but I'll save those details for my final review once I finish the show.
So far, I've really liked what I've seen. The chemistry between Michelle Pfeiffer and Elle Fanning is top-notch—they genuinely feel like a real mother and daughter. The story gets straight to the point; with episodes running just over 30 minutes, it doesn't waste any time on filler. It is a bit explicit, though, so viewer discretion is advised—it's definitely not family-friendly. That might be the only slight downside I've found so far, but I'll let you know in a future post just how good it turns out to be once I finish it.
