Hello friends who love the seventh art, today I want to talk a little about a movie that made me feel like a real nerd, since it touched on a subject that I am passionate about and that I studied at university. This is the 2016 film Arrival, a pure science fiction film directed by Denis Villeneuve that portrays the arrival, hence its title of alien ships, positioned at various important points around the world. It is not the typical action movie with aliens, where there are colored rays, futuristic ships and heroes that save the day, here we have an imaginary exercise as it would be to have contact with another civilization very different from the human race, but beyond that, how that would change our way of seeing things, especially the conception of time, which is the central approach of the film.
Hola amigos amantes del séptimo arte, hoy quiero hablar un poco acerca de una película que me hizo sentir como un auténtico nerd, ya que tocó un tema el cual me apasiona y estudié en la universidad. Se trata de la película Arrival del año 2016, una cinta de ciencia ficción pura dirigida por Denis Villeneuve que retrata la llegada, de ahí su título de unas naves extraterrestres, posicionadas en varios puntos importantes alrededor del mundo. No es la típica película de acción con extraterrestres, donde hay rayos de colores, naves futuristas y héroes que salvan el día, aquí tenemos un ejercicio imaginario como sería tener contacto con otra civilización muy diferente a la raza humana, pero más allá de eso, como eso cambiaría nuestra forma de ver las cosas, especialmente la concepción del tiempo, que es el planteamiento central de la película.
The plot revolves around the linguist Dr. Louis Banks (Amy Adams) who is contacted by the United States Army to help establish communication with the aliens who have landed their ships in some places on planet earth. As the doctor tries to understand the alien language, she will gradually feel her perception of reality and time will change without apparent explanation. Also, teaming up with her is the mathematician Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner) who helps with the search for answers when it comes to facing a totally unknown new language, without bases or references. The plot moves a bit slowly, but we should not confuse slowness with boring, the narrative is like that because the content that is presented is somewhat dense and I like it, it made me feel like I was in one of my university classes, it has interesting metaphors to make us understand the concepts that are handled and in this way the viewer can understand the meaning and the task that scientists have to solve. They both make a great team, especially Amy Adams, the way in which she shows us with her reactions how everything that is happening is affected in her mind and body is really credible.
La trama gira en torno a la linguista Dra. Louis Banks (Amy Adams) quien es contactada por el ejército de los Estados Unidos para que ayude a poder establecer comunicación con los alienígenas que han aterrizado sus navez en algunos lugares del planeta tierra. A medida que la doctora trata de entender el lenguaje alienígena sentirá como poco a poco su percepción acerca de la realidad y el tiempo irá cambiando sin aparente explicación. También, haciendo equipo con ella se encuentra el matemático Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner) quién ayuda con la búsqueda de respuestas en lo que se refiere enfrentarse a una nueva lengua totalmente desconocida, sin bases, ni referencias. La trama avanza un poco lento, pero no debemos confundir lentitud con aburrido, la narrativa es así porque el contenido que se presenta es algo denso y me gusta, me hizo sentir en una de mis clases de universidad, tiene interesantes metáforas para darnos a entender los conceptos que se manejan y de esa forma el espectador puede comprender el significado y la tarea que tienen los científicos por resolver. Ambos hacen un gran equipo, especialmente Amy Adams, es realmente creíble la forma en que nos muestra con sus reacciones como la esta afectado en su mente y cuerpo todo lo que va sucediendo.
The concept of the language handled in the film is very deep and dense, but it is very well illustrated that it is easy to digest, I like it because they take their time so that we can learn in the same way that the aliens do and also the scientists, It is a very interesting exchange process between two cultures that do not know each other. Humans try to teach aliens words, using sounds as well as movement, so that they can create meaning. But when the aliens communicate with each other, the problem to understand grows even more, since they have a writing system based on circular symbols, shortly after they discover that the symbols contain meanings and not words like human language. This part was the one I liked the most, because I am a language and literature teacher and many of the concepts handled in the tape I studied in depth in my university years, I really felt very identified, and as the protagonist, I was also changing my perception of things as I understood what was happening.
El concepto del lenguaje manejado en la película es muy profundo y denso, pero está muy bien ilustrado que es fácil de digerir, me gusta porque se toman su tiempo para que podamos aprender de la misma forma que lo hacen los aliens y también los científicos, es un proceso de intercambio muy interesante entre dos culturas que no se conocen. Los humanos tratan de enseñar a los aliens palabras, utilizando sonidos y también movimientos, para que de esa forma puedan crear un significado. Pero cuando los aliens se comunican el problema por entender crece aún más, pues tiene un sistema de escritura basado en símbolos circulares, poco después descubren que los símbolos encierran significados y no palabras como el lenguaje humano. Esta parte fue la que más me gustó, porque soy profesor de lengua y literatura y muchos de los conceptos manejados en la cinta yo los estudie a profundidad en mis años de universidad, realmente me sentí muy identificado, y como la protagonista, yo también fui cambiando mi percepción de las cosas a medida que entendía lo que iba sucediendo.
The film alludes to the Sphir-Whorf hypothesis that language determines our thinking and perception, through this premise is what the doctor discovers when she has strange visions, which are nothing more than memories of the future . The doctor understands that having enough linguistic tools to communicate with the aliens has changed her perception of time, understanding it as a cycle rather than a linear trend. Although it is impossible in reality, somehow the language we speak does determine our way of understanding the world, hence each people develops a different culture from another. Human beings use language to communicate, but we also express many things, let's think for a moment about poetry, it is the oldest art created with words, first orally and then with writing, metaphors make up our understanding of the world, and thanks to cognitive linguistics we no longer only know that they are not simple rhetorical resources, but that it is a form of communication to enclose meanings. This is handled in the film but on such a fantastic level that it's beautiful to understand.
En la película se hace alusión a la hipótesis de Sphir -Whorf que plantea que el lenguaje determina nuestro pensamiento y la percepción, a través de esta premisa es lo que la doctora va descubriendo cuando tiene extrañas visiones, que no son más que recuerdos del futuro. La doctora entiende que al tener suficientes herramientas lingüísticas para comunicarse con los aliens ha cambiado su percepción del tiempo, entendiendo a este como un ciclo más que una tendencia líneal. Si bien es imposible en la realidad, de alguna forma el idioma que hablamos si determina nuestra forma de entender el mundo, de ahí que cada pueblo desarrolla una cultura diferente a otra. Los seres humanos utilizamos el lenguaje para comunicarnos, pero también expresamos muchas cosas, pensemos por un momento en la poesía, es el arte más antiguo creado con palabras, primero de forma oral y luego con la escritura, las metaforas componen nuestro entendimiento del mundo, y gracias a la lingüística cognitica ya no solo sabemos que no son simles recursos retóricos, sino que es una forma de comunicación para encerrar significados. Esto se maneja en la película pero a un nivel tan fantástico que resulta hermoso de comprender.
Now, the understanding of a new language has changed her perception of time, Dr. Banks can see the future that she will have to live as if she were remembering it and she can see that she will have a daughter but that she will die of a strange disease, this new reality torments her until she has no energy to continue. And she asks herself the question of whether it would be worth making the decision to become a mother even knowing the consequences. Ahora, la comprensión de un nuevo lenguaje ha cambiado su percepción del tiempo, la doctora Banks puede ver el futuro que le tocará vivir como si lo estuviera recordando y puede ver que tendrá una hija pero que morirá de una extraña enfermedad, esta nueva realidad la atormenta hasta dejarla sin energías para continuar. Y ella se hace la pregunta de si valdría la pena tomar la decisión de ser madre aun conociendo las consecuencias, creo que este punto se parece mucho a la filosofía del Eterno Retorno de Nietzsche, si bien el hablaba de la valentía de decidir por la la misma vida aunque se repetirera infinidades de veces, aquí solo se plantea que hacer con tu vida si conoces cual será tu destino. Esto no dista mucho de la vida real, ya que todos sabemos que moriremos algún día y es inevitable, pero podemos elegir como psar nuestros días hasta que se terminen, pero sin conocer el contenido de cada uno de ellos en el futuro. Es una hermosa metáfora la que nos plantea la película, pienso que debemos vivir plenamente nuestra vida sin ningún remordimiento, aceptando todas las consecuencias de lo que decidimos por nosotros mismos, ese es el libre albedrío.
