Últimamente me estoy dando cuenta de que hay muchas películas por ahí a las que hay que echar un ojo, creo que estamos pasando por una sobreexposición de films brutal y cada vez siento que tengo menos tiempo para ponerme al día. Películas que decidí no ver en el cine como Flash, Transformers y otras que si quisiera disfrutarlas en una sala como Oppenheimer o Barbie. La cosa es que dentro de este grupo de producciones siento que de las que menos se está hablando o menos mediática está siendo es esta precisamente, Asteroid City, un film neta y puramente al mejor estilo de este director estadounidense y con un cast que es de los mejores que he visto en mucho tiempo en una película.

Lately I'm realizing that there are a lot of movies out there to keep an eye on, I think we are going through a brutal overexposure of films and I feel like I have less and less time to catch up. Films that I decided not to see in the theater like Flash, Transformers and others that I would like to enjoy in a theater like Oppenheimer or Barbie. The thing is that within this group of productions I feel that the least talked about or less media coverage is precisely this one, Asteroid City, a film in the best style of this American director and with a cast that is one of the best I've seen in a long time in a movie.

Como mi usuario por acá lo asoma, soy fotógrafo, algo que me "vincula" un poco a la historia de este film (ya sabrán porque), y como tal no puedo explicar el placer visual que para mi representó disfrutar de todas y cada una de las escenas que podemos ver en esta película. Siento también que este film no es para todo el mundo ya que con Wes Anderson pasa algo, lo odias o lo quieres, pero tintes medios no existen y lo digo porque conozco personas que no pudieron con esta, no fueron capaces de ver más de 10 minutos de esta historia y está bien, como dije los gustos son muy variados en el cine. No se si me gustó más que "El gran hotel Budapest", creo que no, pero aún así tampoco me decepcionó por completo. Así que sin más hablemos un poco de lo que es esta nueva obra de Anderson.

As my user here, I am a photographer, something that "links" me a little to the story of this film (you will know why), and as such I can not explain the visual pleasure that for me represented to enjoy each and every one of the scenes that we can see in this film. I also feel that this film is not for everyone because with Wes Anderson something happens, you hate him or you love him, but there are no medium tints and I say this because I know people who could not with this one, they were not able to see more than 10 minutes of this story and that's fine, as I said tastes are very varied in cinema. I don't know if I liked it more than "The Grand Budapest Hotel", I don't think so, but even so I wasn't completely disappointed either. So without further ado let's talk a little bit about what this new work of Anderson is.

Esta historia se desarrolla en un pueblo totalmente ficticio en el medio del desierto en Estados Unidos llamado Asteroid City, se llama así porque aparentemente cayó un meteorito hace miles de años y como buenos americanos hay que sacarle provecho a absolutamente todo. A dicho lugar de repente comienzan a llegar varias familias ya que se está realizando una convención de astronomía en donde jóvenes y adolescentes super dotados exponen sus diferentes proyectos. En ese transcurrir conoceremos a varios personajes, bastante particulares y excéntricos, que nos involucrarán en sus vidas exponiendo diferentes situaciones, pensamientos y maneras de ver el mundo, todo bajo un lente lleno de comedia, drama y diálogos bastantes ingeniosos.

This story takes place in a totally fictitious town in the middle of the desert in the United States called Asteroid City, so called because apparently a meteorite fell thousands of years ago and as good Americans you have to take advantage of absolutely everything. Suddenly, several families start to arrive to this place because an astronomy convention is being held in which gifted young people and teenagers present their different projects. During this event we will meet several characters, quite particular and eccentric, who will involve us in their lives exposing different situations, thoughts and ways of seeing the world, all under a lens full of comedy, drama and quite witty dialogues.

Entre los personajes relevantes tenemos a Augie Steenbeck (Jason Schwartzman) quien es un fotógrafo de guerra quien está teniendo una crisis de paternidad importante, a Midge Campbell (Scarlett Johansson) una actriz que lo único que quiere en el mundo es ser famosa, incluso más que a su propia hija, Stanley Zak (Tom Hanks), el suegro de Augie, un jubilado con dinero al que nunca le gustó su yerno y un largo etcétera. La cosa es que la vida que estamos presenciando de todos estos personajes se verá interrumpida por un hecho en concreto que eventualmente cambiará, más o menos, el mundo como se conoce. A partir de acá se seguirá ahondando en lo que son las personalidades de todos pero esta vez con el tema de conversación de este hecho en la mente de cada uno.

Among the relevant characters we have Augie Steenbeck (Jason Schwartzman) who is a war photographer who is having a major paternity crisis, Midge Campbell (Scarlett Johansson) an actress who all she wants in the world is to be famous, even more than her own daughter, Stanley Zak (Tom Hanks), Augie's father-in-law, a retired man with money who never liked his son-in-law and a long etcetera. The thing is that the life we are witnessing of all these characters will be interrupted by a specific event that will eventually change, more or less, the world as it is known. From here on we will continue to delve into the personalities of everyone but this time with the topic of conversation of this event in the mind of each one.

Dentro de esta película hay dos cosas que quisiera tocar: la forma en como se abordan temas como la paternidad, la sociedad, la libre prensa, el como los gobiernos controlan la información, la soledad, el como ser feliz y estar a gusto con uno mismo; todo tópicos en principio profundos pero que acá de una manera muy peculiar y hasta satírica son expuestos para que uno como espectador los busque entender de la forma más extravagante posible. Detrás de cada personaje hay ciertas cargas que los hacen super interesantes y es lo que le da profundidad a la historia; es muy probable que cuando vean la película se sientan aburridos y estén tentados a quitarla pero es aquí cuando les digo que no lo hagan, es verdad que puede ser un poco lenta y pesada, pero hay que entender que esto no es cine comercial, por lo menos así lo entiendo.

Within this film there are two things I would like to touch on: the way in which topics such as parenthood, society, free press, how governments control information, loneliness, how to be happy and be at ease with oneself are approached; all topics that are deep in principle but here in a very peculiar and even satirical way are exposed so that one as a viewer seeks to understand them in the most extravagant way possible. Behind each character there are certain charges that make them super interesting and is what gives depth to the story; it is very likely that when you see the film you feel bored and are tempted to remove it but this is when I tell you not to do it, it is true that it can be a little slow and heavy, but you have to understand that this is not commercial cinema, at least that's how I understand it.

El film dura un poco menos de dos horas, tiempo en el que en lo personal nunca me aburrí, me pareció fascinante la interacción de los personajes, los diálogos, la forma en como perciben el mundo, las tormentas que se crean en sus propias mentes sin ser verdaderos problemas y es que detrás de todo hay una leve comedia, muy sutil, que me sacó un par de risas y eso lo agradezco. Otras de las etiquetas de este film es que es de ciencia ficción, si nos ponemos técnicos habría que decir que si lo es, para mi no entra mucho en ese genero, el hecho que mencioné anteriormente que cambia todo es SciFi puro y duro pero algo de solo minutos no se si es suficiente para definir toda una película, capaz me estoy equivocando.

The film lasts a little less than two hours, time in which I personally never got bored, I found fascinating the interaction of the characters, the dialogues, the way they perceive the world, the storms that are created in their own minds without being real problems and behind everything there is a slight comedy, very subtle, that made me laugh a couple of times and I appreciate that. Another of the labels of this film is that it is science fiction, if we get technical we would have to say that if it is, for me it does not fall much into that genre, the fact that I mentioned earlier that changes everything is pure SciFi but something just minutes is not enough to define an entire film, maybe I'm wrong.

Por último quiero hablar de toda la estética, diseño, cinematografía, fotografía y todo lo que tenga que ver con lo visual. El manejo de las secuencias en lateral, de un lado a otro y de arriba a abajo, los encuadres en las tomas y que en un mismo plano ocurran hasta dos acciones a la vez para mi es lo mejor logrado de esta película. No le veo ni un error a la visión que Anderson y lo que quiso mostrar, repito, para mi como fotógrafo es espectacular todo lo que vi. La saturación, los colores pasteles, la extravagancia y el contraste que a veces vemos entre el entorno y la vestimenta es otra de las cosas muy bien logradas. Así que si, si son amantes de todo lo que tenga que ver con estos aspectos audiovisuales sin dudas no dejen de ver este film, es una verdadera joya en ese sentido.

Finally I want to talk about all the aesthetics, design, cinematography, photography and everything that has to do with visuals. The handling of the sequences laterally, from one side to the other and from top to bottom, the framing of the shots and the fact that in the same shot there are two actions happening at the same time, for me, is the best thing achieved in this film. I don't see a single mistake in Anderson's vision and what he wanted to show, I repeat, for me as a photographer everything I saw was spectacular. The saturation, the pastel colors, the extravagance and the contrast that sometimes we see between the environment and the clothing is another of the things very well achieved. So yes, if you are lovers of everything that has to do with these audiovisual aspects, don't miss this film, it's a real gem in that sense.

Los personajes, como ya he dicho, son muy particulares y excéntricos. Se me olvidado mencionar a actores como Steve Carell, Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Adrien Brody, Margot Robbie, Tilda Swinton, Hope Davis, Maya Hawke, la verdad es que el casting de este film es una autentica locura y hablar de cada uno sería algo eterno. Lo que puedo decir es que cada uno, en esencia, tiene su encanto y personalidad que lo hace único. No hay actuaciones malas, por lo menos así lo percibí, cada una vale mucho la pena de apreciar. Un detalle extra que les puedo decir a manera de spoiler sano es que para mi la mejor escena de la película es la protagonizada por Margot Robbie, como era de esperarse. Y ojo a las tres hijas de Augie, se roban el show en más de una ocasión.

The characters, as I said, are very particular and eccentric. I forgot to mention actors like Steve Carell, Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Adrien Brody, Margot Robbie, Tilda Swinton, Hope Davis, Maya Hawke, the truth is that the casting of this film is really crazy and talking about each one would take forever. What I can say is that each one, in essence, has their charm and personality that makes them unique. There are no bad performances, at least that's how I perceived them, each one is worth appreciating. An extra detail that I can tell you as a healthy spoiler is that for me the best scene of the film is the one starring Margot Robbie, as expected. And watch out for Augie's three daughters, they steal the show on more than one occasion.

Un film muy particular que en lo personal disfruté bastante. Le doy un 7/10 porque no me gustó tanto como esperaba a pesar de ser muy fanático de Wes Anderson. A pesar de todo tiene los elementos característicos de él como director y esos al ser como su firma hacen que el film tenga cierto valor. Tiene una duración de una hora 45 minutos que transcurren como si fuera una montaña rusa. Les dejo el tráiler por acá abajo y así le echan un vistazo.

A very particular film that I personally enjoyed quite a lot. I give it a 7/10 because I didn't like it as much as I expected despite being a Wes Anderson fan. Despite everything it has the characteristic elements of him as a director and those being like his signature make the film have some value.
