Cuando Will Smith se levantó de su asiento para dirigirse directamente a donde estaba Chris Rock y darle aquel golpe que le dio la vuelta al mundo en la última gala de los premios Oscar muchas personas pensamos, y me incluyo, que no volveríamos a verlo en algún proyecto en un futuro cercano porque de hecho muchas puertas que en principio tenía abiertas se les cerraron inmediatamente. La cosa es que tal parece que aquel percance no lo detuvo y continuó haciendo lo que terminó siendo otro film en donde podemos ver su capacidad de actuación al 100%, quizás de las mejores de los últimos tiempos estando un poco a la par con su papel en "King Richard".

When Will Smith got up from his seat to go directly to where Chris Rock was and give him that punch that went around the world at the last Oscar gala many people thought, and I include myself, that we would not see him again in any project in the near future because in fact many doors that in principle he had open were closed immediately. The thing is that it seems that that mishap did not stop him and he continued doing what ended up being another film where we can see his acting ability at 100%, perhaps one of the best in recent times being a little on par with his role in "King Richard".

Esta película es cruda, es incomoda de ver, es dolorosa y te indigna al máximo y esto pasa porque fue real, porque es basada en hechos que sucedieron en los Estados Unidos en donde la esclavitud era la norma y en donde las personas negras no tenían ningún tipo voz ni esperanza. Pero eso cambia gracias a la historia de Peter, un esclavo que logra llenarse de coraje y esperanza para cambiar la situación de muchos y que eso lo llevó a que una fotografía de él diera la vuelta al mundo para que todos entendieran la verdadera cara de lo que era ser un esclavo. Hablemos un poco entonces de lo que es este nuevo proyecto de Smith.

This film is raw, it is uncomfortable to watch, it is painful and outrages you to the maximum and this happens because it was real, because it is based on events that happened in the United States where slavery was the norm and where black people had no voice or hope. But that changes thanks to the story of Peter, a slave who manages to fill himself with courage and hope to change the situation of many and that led to a photograph of him going around the world so that everyone would understand the true face of what it was to be a slave. La historia es muy simple pero poderosa. Peter (Will Smith) es un esclavo que vive junto a su familia en las tierras de un capitán hasta que un buen día es llevado a otra plantación para que realice unos trabajos forzados en donde las condiciones y el trato es más que inhumano. Pero él no es un esclavo cualquiera, es uno que tiene una fe inquebrantable y que gracias a ella es capaz de lograr muchas cosas que probablemente un esclavo promedio no hubiera podido, además del amor por su familia y por la libertad de los suyos. Estando en aquella plantación se da cuenta que bajo esas condiciones no se puede seguir viviendo y ayudado de un ingenio e inteligencia de la que también es poseedor logra burlar a sus aprehensores y escapar lo más lejos posible.

The story is very simple but powerful. Peter (Will Smith) is a slave who lives with his family on a captain's land until one day he is taken to another plantation to perform forced labor where the conditions and treatment is more than inhumane. But he is not just any slave, he is one who has an unshakable faith and thanks to it is able to achieve many things that probably an average slave would not have been able to, in addition to the love for his family and for the freedom of his own. Being in that plantation he realizes that under those conditions it is not possible to continue living and with the help of his wit and intelligence he manages to outwit his captors and escape as far as possible.

Un poco de contexto, estamos en el año en el que Abraham Lincoln abolió la esclavitud, es decir 1863, pero esa decisión tardó en llegar a todos los territorios porque muchos de ellos estaban bajo el mando de los confederados, personas cuya mentalidad era más que retrograda e insistían en mantener la esclavitud el mayor tiempo posible. Peter y unos cuantos más lograron enterarse de esa decisión y sabiendo eso sus ganas de buscar al bando amigo eran más grande. Y es en este momento cuando la trama da inicio, estos esclavos se sumergen en los pantanos de Luisiana buscando escaparse de unos cazadores que lo único que quieren es darles captura y algo más.

A little context, we are in the year in which Abraham Lincoln abolished slavery, i.e. 1863, but that decision took time to reach all the territories because many of them were under the command of the Confederates, people whose mentality was more than retrograde and insisted on maintaining slavery as long as possible. Peter and a few others managed to learn of that decision and knowing that their desire to seek the friendly side was greater. And it is at this moment when the plot begins, these slaves are immersed in the swamps of Louisiana seeking to escape from hunters who only want to give them capture and something else.

Lo primero que quiero decir es que esta película es un placer visual en el sentido de la forma en como fue grabada. Todo el film está en una especie de clave baja o low key, esto significa que lo que predomina son las sombras y tonos grises, no es blanco y negro sino que toda la saturación está al minimo y eso amigos es un detalle que le da mucho más carácter a la historia porque convierte todo en algo mucho más dramático. Los paisajes, las tomas, las escenas, la fotografía en general es de los aspectos que más cuidaron y la verdad todo es un 10/10, impecable. Como dije antes es una película muy difícil de ver porque nos pone en unas situaciones muy complejas y delicadas que nadie nunca quisiera vivir y eso es otra de las cosas que me impactaron, la crudeza con la que Antoine Fuqua quiso plasmar esta historia, un director que ya tiene cierto nombre.

The first thing I want to say is that this film is a visual pleasure in the sense of the way it was shot. The whole film is in a kind of low key, this means that what predominates are the shadows and gray tones, it is not black and white but all the saturation is at a minimum and that friends is a detail that gives much more character to the story because it makes everything much more dramatic. The landscapes, the shots, the scenes, the photography in general is one of the aspects they took the most care of and the truth is everything is a 10/10, impeccable. As I said before it is a very difficult film to watch because it puts us in very complex and delicate situations that no one would ever want to live and that's another thing that struck me, the rawness with which Antoine Fuqua wanted to capture this story, a director who already has a certain name.

Ver esta película es saber que te vas a indignar y te vas a sentir mal porque la carga emocional es grande pero no es solo eso ya que dentro de todo este drama también existe una parte importante llena de acción, persecución y hasta sus detalles del cine bélico, partes de esta guerra entre la Unión y los confederados que la verdad estuvo muy buena, esas escenas dentro del capo de batalla estuvieron a la altura y es algo que se disfruta bastante, yo que soy fanático de este tipo de cine puedo decir que lo poco mostrado estuvo muy bien logrado.

Watching this movie is to know that you are going to be indignant and feel bad because the emotional charge is great but it is not only that because within all this drama there is also an important part full of action, persecution and even details of war cinema, parts of this war between the Union and the Confederates that the truth was very good, those scenes inside the battlefield were at the height and is something that is quite enjoyable, I am a fan of this type of film I can say that the little shown was very well done.

A parte de la indignación y como no solo es un drama también existe una montaña rusa de emociones que nos van acompañando a lo largo del film. Hay mucha tensión producto de esa persecución inclemente que se da en los pantanos, esa sensación de que algo va a pasar, de que todo se va a terminar más rápido de lo que pensamos y que al final lo que hace es que estemos siempre pendiente de lo que pase, no hay tiempo para distraerte ni para aburrirte, el ritmo no te lo permite aunque no lo parezca. Hay felicidad, hay tristeza, impotencia, venganza, valentía, honor y coraje, mucho coraje en esta historia.

In addition to the indignation and as it is not only a drama, there is also a roller coaster of emotions that accompany us throughout the film. There is a lot of tension resulting from the relentless pursuit that takes place in the swamps, the feeling that something is going to happen, that everything is going to end faster than we think and that in the end what makes us is that we are always waiting for what happens, there is no time to get distracted or bored, the pace does not allow it even if it does not seem so. There is happiness, sadness, impotence, revenge, bravery, honor and courage, a lot of courage in this story.

Como ya les adelanté la actuación de Will Smith es impresionante desde la interpretación como en el cambio físico, porque entiendo que hubo unos ajustes que tuvo que hacer para que el papel calase mejor. Es un personaje con una fuerza de voluntad inmensa quien es movido por el amor de su familia y por el deseo de la libertad, motores más que suficientes para nunca abandonar la lucha aún cuando estuvo en las peores situaciones en las que una persona pudiera estar. El tema con Will es que realmente te crees sus personajes, él se mete tanto en ellos que parece que los hace suyos como si fueran personales y eso no lo hace cualquiera, de ahí el éxito de todos sus trabajos. Les diría que solo por ver esta actuacion deberían de ver este film, vale cada minuto.

As I already told you, Will Smith's performance is impressive from the interpretation to the physical change, because I understand that there were some adjustments he had to make to make the role fit better. It is a character with immense willpower who is driven by the love of his family and the desire for freedom, more than enough engines to never give up the fight even when he was in the worst situations in which a person could be. The thing about Will is that you really believe his characters, he gets so into them that he seems to make them his own as if they were personal and not just anyone can do that, hence the success of all his work. I would say that just to see this performance alone you should see this film, it is worth every minute.

Una película que en lo personal me sorprendió porque no pensaba que fuera a gustar o por lo menos llamar la atención. Buena cinematografía, buenas actuaciones, una historia ruda pero que cautiva con unas cargas decentes de acción que uno a veces no se espera. Es un film todo en uno y por todo eso le doy un 8/10. La pueden encontrar en Apple Tv y tiene una duración de un poco más de dos horas. Les dejo el tráiler para que le echen un ojo.

A film that personally surprised me because I didn't think it would be liked or at least attract attention. Good cinematography, good performances, a rough but captivating story with some decent loads of action that one sometimes doesn't expect. It's an all-in-one film and for all that I give it an 8/10.
