Seguimos en la onda del terror y en esta oportunidad le tocó el turno a Evil Dead Rise. Veo este film después de haber visto el exorcista del Papa, una producción que me llamó la atención pero gracias a detalles en su cierre no me terminó de convencer. Con este film pasaría algo similar y es que en este tipo de películas para mi hay dos grandes características: todo empieza gracias a malas decisiones tomadas por sus protagonistas y que dichos cierres casi siempre tienden a ser escandalosos, pomposos y hasta exagerados. Lo primero lo puedo medio aceptar pero lo segundo no se si me gusta tanto, honestamente me perdieron con lo que hicieron acá, no es que esté mal pero creo que no es para mi.

We continue with the horror wave and this time it was the turn of Evil Dead Rise. I see this film after having seen The Pope's Exorcist, a production that caught my attention but thanks to details in its closing I was not convinced. With this film something similar would happen and is that in this type of films for me there are two main characteristics: everything starts thanks to bad decisions made by its protagonists and that such closings almost always tend to be scandalous, pompous and even exaggerated. The first I can half accept but the second I don't know if I like it so much, honestly they lost me with what they did here, it's not that it's bad but I think it's not for me.

No me gusta dármelas del duro pero es que para que una película de terror genere en mi el famoso "jump scare" es porque la verdad tiene que ser algo increíblemente inesperado y que además esté muy bien hecho. No pasó en este film, nunca me sentí amenazado por el demonio que habita el cuerpo de esta pobre mujer pero si estoy claro de que si eres una persona sensible a este tipo de producciones la vas a pasar mal, muy mal. Y es que tanto el aspecto, la sonrisa macabra, los ojos lleno de una maldad vacía y las cantidades industriales de sangre que se ven puede que mueva algo en tu interior que genere cierta aversión y hasta incomodidad. Habiendo dicho esto, vayamos entonces y hablemos de lo que es lo nuevo del genero del terror y del slasher.

I don't like to be a tough guy, but for a horror film to generate in me the famous "jump scare" is because the truth has to be something incredibly unexpected and also very well done. It did not happen in this film, I never felt threatened by the demon that inhabits the body of this poor woman but I am clear that if you are a sensitive person to this type of productions you are going to have a bad time, very bad. And is that both the appearance, the macabre smile, the eyes full of empty evil and the industrial quantities of blood that you see may move something inside you that generates some aversion and even discomfort. Having said that, let's go ahead and talk about what's new in the horror and slasher genre.

Esta macabra historia da inicio con Beth (Lily Sullivan) quien es una técnico de guitarras que se la pasaba viajando por el mundo hasta que llega a Los Ángeles y se da cuenta que está embarazada. Debido a esto toma la decisión de poner una pausa en su vida y decide visitar a su hermana Ellie (Alyssa Sutherland) quien vive acompañada de sus tres hijos en un viejo edificio que está a punto de ser demolido. Aparentemente todo va en orden, es la típica madre soltera a la que le toca lidiar con sus hijos adolescentes los cuales están en sus etapas rebeldes. Hasta ahora nada fuera de lo normal, pero es que hasta lo menos impensado puede desatar la peores pesadillas para esta familia y algunos vecinos de aquel viejo edificio.

This macabre story begins with Beth (Lily Sullivan) who is a guitar technician who was traveling around the world until she arrives in Los Angeles and realizes she is pregnant. Because of this she decides to put a pause in her life and decides to visit her sister Ellie (Alyssa Sutherland) who lives with her three children in an old building that is about to be demolished. Apparently everything is in order, she is a typical single mother who has to deal with her teenage children who are in their rebellious stages. So far nothing out of the ordinary, but even the least unthinkable can unleash the worst nightmares for this family and some of the neighbors of that old building.

Esa misma noche ocurre un terremoto, uno bastante fuerte y terrorífico hay que decir el cual genera varios daños pero sobre todo grietas dejando ver que aquel lugar no es lo que se puede esperar. Gracias a eso estos jóvenes, en la curiosidad típica de la edad, descubren ciertas cosas religiosas que no tienen la mejor pinta pero como se creen invencibles aún así deciden llevarse todo eso sin saber el error fatal que están cometiendo. Estas son las decisiones sin sentido que se toman en este tipo de films pero que uno las acepta porque sino no existiera trama creíble. La cosa es que a partir de acá la vida de estas personas se convierten en una pesadilla ya que algo maligno y demoniaco "despierta" y está listo para inundar todo de terror y sangre, muy literalmente.

That same night an earthquake occurs, a rather strong and terrifying one it must be said which generates several damages but above all cracks showing that that place is not what can be expected. Thanks to that, these young people, in the typical curiosity of their age, discover certain religious things that do not look the best but as they think they are invincible, they decide to take all that without knowing the fatal mistake they are making. These are the senseless decisions that are made in this kind of films but one accepts them because otherwise there would be no credible plot. The thing is that from here the lives of these people become a nightmare because something evil and demonic "wakes up" and is ready to flood everything with terror and blood, quite literally.

Evil Dead Rise es una película bastante grotesca y que es capaz de impresionar a cualquiera, incluso a mi. Siento que al genero del terror, ese al que tanto daño le han hecho usándolo en films que de terror no tienen ni el nombre, en esta producción si le hicieron una muy buena representación y es que este film puedo decir que es de los más impactantes y crudo que he visto últimamente. Y esto pasa por la combinación de lo paranormal, que siempre será un factor determinante y un as bajo de la manga, con todo lo slasher que se puedan imaginar. Creo que la película más sangrienta que recuerden se va a quedar corta con lo que verán acá. Y esto lo digo porque hay reportes de que en algunas salas de cine se han visto casos de personas mareadas y hasta vomitando tras ver ciertas escenas. Por eso repito lo dicho, si eres una persona sensible, piénsalo dos veces.

Evil Dead Rise is a pretty grotesque film that is capable of impressing anyone, even me. I feel that the horror genre, the one that has been damaged so much by using it in films that don't even have the name of horror, in this production they did a very good representation and I can say that this film is one of the most shocking and raw I've seen lately. And this happens because of the combination of the paranormal, which will always be a determining factor and an ace up the sleeve, with all the slasher you can imagine. I think the bloodiest movie you can remember is going to fall short of what you'll see here. And I say this because there are reports that in some movie theaters there have been cases of people getting dizzy and even vomiting after watching certain scenes. So I repeat what I said, if you are a sensitive person, think twice.

En cuanto a la trama en si, a su fondo, me pareció de lo más simple que se podía hacer, no hay mucho contexto ni historia detrás de lo que sucede, solo el necesario para que entiendas de donde viene todo. Realmente esto hace falta? - yo diría que si pero solo para darle un poco más de profundidad a la historia ya que al final muy probablemente eso deje de importar y es que en este tipo de films lo que realmente vale es el impacto visual y psicológico que ciertas escenas son capaces de transmitir. A pesar de lo vacía y plana de la trama es indudable el nivel de enganche que genera, por más que sepas que va a pasar o por lo menos que lo intuyas es complicado que dejes de ver la pantalla a menos que sea por motivos cardiacos o estomacales, que es sabido que puede suceder.

As for the plot itself, the background, I found it to be as simple as it could be, there is not much context or history behind what happens, just enough to make you understand where everything comes from. Is this really necessary? - I would say yes, but only to give a little more depth to the story, because in the end it probably won't matter, and in this kind of films what really matters is the visual and psychological impact that certain scenes are able to transmit. Despite the empty and flat plot is undoubtedly the level of engagement that generates, even if you know what is going to happen or at least that you intuit it is difficult to stop watching the screen unless it is for heart or stomach reasons, which is known to happen.

Y por último quisiera hablar de par de cosas. Las películas slasher no son de mis favoritas, no me generan nada verlas más allá del morbo de ver cantidades absurdas de sangre salir de alguna extremidad de una persona. Acá hay mucho de eso, demasiado diría yo, decapitaciones, mutilaciones, desmembramientos de cuerpos, disparos, personas incendiadas, una extensa variedad de daños posibles a cuerpo humano. Esto sin dudas llama la atención, este tipo de cine siempre ha sido así y tiene una gran cantidad de fanáticos en el mundo. Hay una escena, casi al final, en donde están en un ascensor la cual para mi es super clásica de este genero, pues en lo personal fue la escena que me perdió por completo porque dentro del sinsentido de la misma película ESA parte en especifico la vi incensaría por más icónica que sea. A veces menos es más pero entiendo que esa frase en este contexto no aplica.

And finally I would like to talk about a couple of things. Slasher movies are not one of my favorites, I don't get anything out of watching them beyond the morbidity of seeing absurd amounts of blood coming out of a person's limbs. Here there is a lot of that, too much I would say, decapitations, mutilations, dismemberment of bodies, gunshots, people on fire, a wide variety of possible damage to the human body. This undoubtedly attracts attention, this type of cinema has always been like this and has a large number of fans in the world. There is a scene, almost at the end, where they are in an elevator which for me is super classic of this genre, because personally it was the scene that lost me completely because within the meaninglessness of the same film THAT part in particular I saw it incensed as iconic as it is. Sometimes less is more but I understand that phrase doesn't apply in this context.

Los personajes. Alyssa Sutherland para mi estuvo espectacular, hacer este tipo de papeles no es fácil ya que demandan mucho esfuerzo físico y sobre todo mental, que lo diga Linda Blair. Todo el maquillaje y el aspecto que le hicieron a esta mujer de verdad es de diez porque muy sinceramente si hay pasajes de la película en donde genera cierto miedo y respeto incluso solo mirarla. Y es que acá aplica también los gestos y muecas en la cara, creo que es un paquete completo que hizo que Alyssa fuera la imagen tan poderosa que terminó siendo en esta película. Los personajes secundarios bueno, no hablo mucho porque no hay nada que sobresalga, como siempre pasa en este tipo de films la mayoría de ellos son simples rellenos o victimas para hacer más grande la masacre, el miedo o la angustia.

The characters. Alyssa Sutherland for me was spectacular, doing this kind of roles is not easy because they demand a lot of physical effort and especially mental, Linda Blair. All the makeup and the look that they did to this woman is really ten because very sincerely if there are passages of the film where it generates some fear and respect even just looking at her. And here also applies the gestures and facial expressions, I think it's a complete package that made Alyssa the powerful image that she ended up being in this film. The secondary characters, well, I don't talk much because there is nothing that stands out, as always happens in this kind of films most of them are simple fillers or victims to make the massacre, fear or anguish bigger.

Un 7.5/10. Creo que es una película muy completa que tiene todos los aspectos relevantes de un terror decente. Te puede dar más o menos miedo o la trama te puede parecer muy simplista pero lo que no puedes negar es que que esa cara genera incomodidad y que la sangre en exceso pueda llegar a producir repulsión. Si son atrevidos véanla porque si, vale la pena. Dura hora y media. Les dejo el tráiler por acá abajo.

A 7.5/10. I think it is a very complete film that has all the relevant aspects of a decent horror. It may scare you more or less or the plot may seem very simplistic but what you can't deny is that that face generates discomfort and that the excessive blood can produce repulsion.
