Desde hace unas semanas había tenido pendiente ver esta nueva producción de Arnold Schwarzenegger, una que representa la primera serie en toda su vasta carrera cinematográfica y el regreso al genero de acción, ese que nos ha dado tantos buenos ratos. No voy a negar que me pareció raro verlo en la pantalla pequeña pero supongo que cuando se llega a cierto momento de la carrera y de la vida en donde protagonizar una película no es tan viable pues hacer series es lo que queda. Y que además el parecido con Sylvester Stallone con Tulsa King es notable, ver a dos pesos pesados hacer series llena de disparos e inmersas en una comedia es algo que a nadie le gustaría perderse.

For a few weeks I had been waiting to see this new Arnold Schwarzenegger production, one that represents the first series in his vast film career and the return to the action genre, the one that has given us so many good times. I will not deny that I found it strange to see him on the small screen but I guess when you reach a certain point in your career and life where starring in a movie is not so viable, then making series is what's left. And also the resemblance with Sylvester Stallone and Tulsa King is remarkable, to see two heavyweights making series full of shooting and immersed in a comedy is something that no one would like to miss.

FUBAR, como ya lo dije, es acción pura llena de conspiraciones, agentes encubiertos, espías haciendo su trabajo pero también es una historia en donde se tocan problemas familiares causados por este trabajo extremo y exigente; todo adornado con una comedia que en lo personal me sacó un par de risas, pensé que no la iba a disfrutar pero si, al final esa formula cursi a veces funcionó en mi. Para que esto ayudara hay que decir que Arnold tiene una gracia innata, muy pocos actores la tienen, es un tipo que a punta de carisma y esa rudeza característica hace que sus papeles terminen siendo gustosos y dignos de ver. Así que sin más, vayamos y hablemos un poco más a fondo de esta particular historia de como ser espía y padre de familia a la vez.

FUBAR, as I said, is pure action full of conspiracies, undercover agents, spies doing their job but it is also a story where family problems caused by this extreme and demanding work are touched; all adorned with a comedy that personally got me a couple of laughs, I thought I was not going to enjoy it but yes, in the end that corny formula sometimes worked on me. For this to help it must be said that Arnold has an innate grace, very few actors have it, he is a guy who at the point of charisma and that characteristic rudeness makes his roles end up being enjoyable and worth seeing. So without further ado, let's go and talk a little more in depth about this particular story of how to be a spy and a family man at the same time.

Luke Brenner es el hombre al que le da vida Arnold, un espía que trabaja para la CIA desde hace más de cuarenta años siendo uno de los mejores agentes de la agencia. El tema es que Luke está a punto de retirarse para poder vivir esa vida que dejó a un lado debido al trabajo y a los secretos que conlleva ser parte de la CIA pero todo cambia, una nueva misión sale a flote y es requerido con carácter de urgencia. Hay que rescatar a otro activo encubierto de una misión que está a punto de fallar por lo que emprenden un viaje hasta Guyana para realizar la extracción. Cual es la sorpresa? - que esa agente la cual estaba peligro era nada más y nada menos que Emma, la hija de Luke.

Luke Brenner is the man Arnold brings to life, a spy who has been working for the CIA for more than forty years as one of the best agents of the agency. The thing is that Luke is about to retire to be able to live that life he left aside due to the work and the secrets that come with being part of the CIA but everything changes, a new mission comes up and he is urgently required. He has to rescue another undercover asset from a mission that is about to fail, so they take a trip to Guyana to perform the extraction. What is the surprise? - That the agent who was in danger was none other than Emma, Luke's daughter.

Evidentemente esto toma por sorpresa a los dos ya que como buenos agentes ninguno sabía de la existencia del otro dentro de las cuatro paredes de la agencia. Si a esto le sumamos la muy dañada relación entre padre/hija que hay entre ellos debido a las ausencias de Luke y todos los problemas de pareja que tuvo con su ex esposa el resultado es que veremos como tienen que pulir diferencias ahora que trabajan juntos dentro de un mismo equipo táctico. A partir de acá seremos testigos de como misión tras misión se va reconstruyendo esta relación al mismo tiempo que tienen que lidiar con una amenaza mundial en manos de un terrorista altamente peligroso.

Evidently this takes both of them by surprise since, as good agents, neither of them knew of the existence of the other within the four walls of the agency. If we add to this the very damaged father/daughter relationship between them due to Luke's absences and all the marital problems he had with his ex-wife, the result is that we will see how they have to polish differences now that they work together in the same tactical team. From here on we will witness how mission after mission this relationship is rebuilt as they have to deal with a global threat at the hands of a highly dangerous terrorist.

Como mencioné antes de las cosas más sobresalientes de esta serie es la comedia que hay en ella. Pero no es un humor negro lleno de acidez ni sarcasmo, es una comedia muy familiar y hasta cursi, de esas típicas películas domingueras, que muchas veces dan cringe pero en otras si funciona realmente. Algo que noté es que intercalan mucho esto en el sentido de que estamos en medio de escena de tensión o acción y de la nada sale un comentario o situación llena de jocosidad o de gracia y en lo personal eso es algo que me sacaba del mood en el que estaba, no digo que esté mal porque sinceramente par de cosas si me causaron risa pero siento que exageraron un poco en esta práctica. Y es que además como también dije, Arnold tiene cierta naturalidad para esto, películas como True Lies o Kindergarten Cop son una muestra de que se puede ser rudo pero sin perder la chispa carismática.

As I mentioned before, one of the most outstanding things about this series is the comedy in it. But it is not a black humor full of acidity or sarcasm, it is a very familiar and even cheesy comedy, one of those typical Sunday movies, which many times give cringe but in others it really works. Something I noticed is that they interject a lot of this in the sense that we are in the middle of a tense or action scene and out of nowhere comes a comment or situation full of humor and personally that is something that took me out of the mood I was in, I'm not saying it's bad because honestly a couple of things did make me laugh but I feel that they exaggerated a little in this practice. And as I also said, Arnold has a certain naturalness for this, movies like True Lies or Kindergarten Cop are a sample that you can be rude but without losing the charismatic spark.

Ahora vamos a las escenas de acción. Evidentemente estamos ante un actor de 75 años aproximadamente el cual se mantiene en una forma envidiable pero hay que ser claros, no es el mismo de Terminator o Conan. Y esto lo digo porque lo poco que se ve de él llevando a cabo una rutina movida en lo personal no lo vi mal, todo muy calculado y premeditado. Hay explosiones, hay persecuciones pero también hay un trabajo detectivesco que por momentos engancha pero que por otros se pierde entre la comedia de la que les hablé. Hay par de escenas cuestionables a nivel de efectos visuales pero nada que sea grave o que merezca ser catalogado como un desastre. En términos generales creo que cumple, con lo muy justo, todo lo relacionado con este tema.

Now let's go to the action scenes. Evidently we are dealing with an actor of about 75 years old who is still in an enviable shape but we must be clear, he is not the same of Terminator or Conan. And I say this because the little we see of him carrying out a moving routine I personally did not see it badly, all very calculated and premeditated. There are explosions, there are chases but there is also a detective work that at times engages but at others gets lost in the comedy of which I spoke. There are a couple of questionable scenes in terms of visual effects but nothing that is serious or deserves to be labeled as a disaster. In general terms, I think it fulfills, with the very fair, everything related to this theme.

Y lo tercero que quisiera decir es el trasfondo paralelo de la serie que abarca el tema familiar. Luke es un padre y esposo ausente debido a la inclemencia del trabajo, esto hizo que en esa familia se crearan heridas que son complicadas de sanar y curar. Esto no quita que él sea un padre atento y cariñoso y un esposo abnegado pero le tocará demostrarlo ante su familia que no sabe nada de su pasado ni su presente. A Emma también la veremos pasar por una situación similar y es que ser espía no es fácil, toca sacrificar tiempo de calidad con las familiar y seres queridos. Este apartado es vital en la trama, al punto que en medio de una crisis de seguridad nacional siempre van a salir discusiones de esta índole ante cualquier diferencia. Al final veremos tanto a Luke como a Emma tratar de recuperar a los suyos sin dejar a un lado sus responsabilidades; este camino es el que suaviza y da un poco de gracia a la historia.

And the third thing I would like to say is the parallel background of the series that covers the family theme. Luke is an absent father and husband due to the inclemency of work, this caused wounds to be created in that family that are complicated to heal and cure. This does not mean that he is not an attentive and loving father and a devoted husband, but he will have to prove it to his family, who knows nothing about his past or present. We will also see Emma going through a similar situation and being a spy is not easy, she has to sacrifice quality time with her family and loved ones. This section is vital in the plot, to the point that in the midst of a national security crisis there will always be discussions of this nature in the face of any difference. In the end we will see both Luke and Emma try to recover their loved ones without leaving aside their responsibilities; this path is the one that softens and gives a little grace to the story.

Los personajes. Como ya han leído Luke es el tipo rudo pero siempre noble, sobreprotector con los suyos e increíblemente terco y testarudo. Creo que Arnold hace un trabajo decente, la critica es muy exigente con él y no toman en cuenta que no es el mismo de hace 30 años. Emma (Mónica Barbaro) es de lo que más me gustó de la serie, mucha carisma, se desenvuelve bien en todo lo que tiene que ver con escenas de pelea, acción, es un personaje con conflictos internos que también la veremos batallar con muchos de esos demonios que no la dejan avanzar en su vida. Los personajes secundarios, que los hay y son de cierto modo importantes, para mi fueron rellenos para potenciar a los dos protagonistas, creo que sin ellos esta serie no hubiese sido la misma.

The characters. As you have already read Luke is the tough guy but always noble, overprotective of his own and incredibly stubborn and stubborn. I think Arnold does a decent job, the critics are very demanding with him and don't take into account that he is not the same as he was 30 years ago. Emma (Monica Barbaro) is what I liked most of the series, a lot of charisma, she does well in everything that has to do with fight scenes, action, she is a character with internal conflicts that we will also see her battle with many of those demons that do not let her move forward in her life. The secondary characters, which there are and are somewhat important, for me were fillers to enhance the two protagonists, I think that without them this series would not have been the same.

Les voy a hacer sincero, yo disfruté esta serie a diferencia del común denominador que he leído. Si que es verdad que tiene sus cosas flojas y fuera de lugar pero en general la vi sin problemas. 7/10 porque agradezco que Arnold se preste para seguir viéndolo en proyectos como estos, hay de todo un poco y creo que es una buena opción para cuando no hay mucho que ver. No tiene el mejor guion pero repito, es una serie muy fresca y divertida. Son ocho capítulos de menos de una hora y está en Netflix. Les dejo el tráiler por acá.

I'll be honest, I enjoyed this series unlike the common denominator I've read. Yes it's true that it has its weak and out of place things but overall I watched it without problems. 7/10 because I appreciate that Arnold lends himself to continue seeing him in projects like these, there's a little bit of everything and I think it's a good option for when there's not much to watch. It doesn't have the best script but I repeat, it's a very fresh and fun series. There are eight chapters of less than an hour and it's on Netflix. I leave you the trailer here.
