Hace un par de días tuve la oportunidad de ver "Air", la película dirigida y coprotagonizada por Ben Affleck en la que muy sinceramente el trabajo como actor lo hace bien pero el de director mejor. En vista de aquello y buscando que ver me encontré con este film reciente en donde el protagonista principal es nuestro amigo Ben a lo que me dije: "será que Affleck está en buena racha y esta película es igual de buena que la que vi hace unos días?" - para saber la respuesta no tuve más remedio que sentarme a verla. La historia tiene una premisa que de por si me baja un poco el hype pero es porque soy muy cínico con esas cosas, hablo de la capacidad que dicen tener algunas personas para controlar la mente.

A couple of days ago I had the opportunity to see "Air", the film directed and co-starred by Ben Affleck in which very sincerely the work as an actor does well but as a director does better. In view of that and looking for what to see I came across this recent film where the main protagonist is our friend Ben to which I said to myself: "will it be that Affleck is on a good streak and this film is just as good as the one I saw a few days ago?" - to know the answer I had no choice but to sit down and watch it. The story has a premise that in itself lowers my hype a bit but that's because I'm very cynical about those things, I'm talking about the ability that some people claim to have to control the mind.

Es sabido que existen terapias de hipnosis que ayudan a afrontar problemas diversos pero también es verdad que en programas de televisión he visto a psíquicos que con solo dar una orden a una persona esta puede actuar y hacer lo que sea. Miren que soy un poco mente abierta pero no se si al punto de asimilar si eso es posible. La cosa es que este film va más o menos de eso, de lo poderosa que puede ser la mente para tener el control absoluto no solo de una persona sino de una sociedad entera. La trama es confusa, ya la llegas a entender pero tienes que nadar en un mar en donde cada ola es un plot twist, es decir, lo que pensabas que era hace cinco minutos después ya no lo es y así vas yendo. Pero bueno, tratemos de hablar un poco de este nuevo titulo de ciencia ficción.

It is known that there are hypnosis therapies that help to face diverse problems but it is also true that in television programs I have seen psychics that with only giving an order to a person this one can act and do whatever. Look that I am a little open minded but I don't know if I can assimilate if that is possible. The thing is that this film is more or less about that, about how powerful the mind can be to have absolute control not only of a person but of an entire society. The plot is confusing, you get to understand it but you have to swim in a sea where every wave is a plot twist, that is, what you thought it was five minutes ago is no longer so and so you go. But well, let's try to talk a little bit about this new science fiction title.

Esta trama de pura ciencia ficción tiene como cabeza principal a Daniel Rourke (Ben Affleck), un detective de policía que está atormentado por la desaparición de su hija. Todo el secuestro de la niña en cuestión es un misterio ya que en un momento estaba en el parque pero al instante no, había desaparecido sin dejar rastros. Pero como la vida tiene que continuar sigue con sus labores de detective e inicia una investigación sobre una serie de robos a ciertos bancos sin saber que uno de ellos extrañamente lo llevaría a estar medio paso más cerca de su objetivo. El detalle es que esos robos son raros, hay algo que no cuadra del todo y es que se dan bajo unas circunstancias bastante extrañas.

This pure science fiction plot has as its main head Daniel Rourke (Ben Affleck), a police detective who is tormented by the disappearance of his daughter. The whole abduction of the girl in question is a mystery as one moment she was in the park but instantly she wasn't, she had disappeared without a trace. But as life has to go on, he continues with his detective work and begins an investigation into a series of robberies of certain banks without knowing that one of them would strangely lead him to be half a step closer to his goal. The detail is that these robberies are strange, there is something that does not quite fit and is that they occur under rather strange circumstances.

A partir de ese momento da comienzo una persecución que se centra en un personaje enigmático, Dellrayne (William Fichtner) quien tiene todos los números de saber las respuestas que Rourke está buscando. Y para todo esto llegará a su vida Diana Cruz (Alice Braga) una psíquica que le hablará de que es muy posible de que todo lo que lo rodea, todo lo que ve y siente sea una ilusión o un mero producto de su imaginación. Deberá entonces ir con cuidado dudando de todo con lo que se cruce ya que no se sabe que es real o no. La verdad y si me preguntan una opinión honesta yo diría que es un concepto que mezcla Matrix con Doctor Strange pero con presupuesto bastante más bajo, por razones obvias. No es es que se parecen, de hecho no se asemejan en nada pero puede que tangan pinceladas que nos haga recordar esos films.

And for all this will come into his life Diana Cruz (Alice Braga) a psychic who will tell him that it is very possible that everything around him, everything he sees and feels is an illusion or a mere figment of his imagination. You will then have to be careful to doubt everything you come across because you don't know what is real or not. The truth and if you ask me an honest opinion I would say that it is a concept that mixes Matrix with Doctor Strange but with a much lower budget, for obvious reasons. It's not that they look alike, in fact they don't resemble anything but they may have touches that remind us of those films.

Como les comentaba esta historia es un tanto confusa, al principio me costó agarrarle el hilo porque la película te invita a que la intriga sea parte de la experiencia cosa que en ese sentido lo hace bien. Pero cuando ya medio estás agarrando el ritmo de entender las cosas y que las piezas comiencen a encajar de la nada aparecen los plot twist para derrumbar todo y comenzar de nuevo; tenía tiempo que en un film no veía tanto de este recurso. Si bien es verdad que muchas veces he dicho que estos giros son necesarios para darle cierta chispa a las historia abusar de ellos puede ser hasta cansino al punto que te predispone a estar siempre alerta y no creer mucho en lo que estás viendo porque de la nada todo se puede caer nuevamente.

As I was saying, this story is a bit confusing, at the beginning it was hard for me to grasp the thread because the film invites you to make the intrigue part of the experience, which in that sense it does well. But when you are halfway through the rhythm of understanding things and that the pieces begin to fit out of nowhere, the plot twists appear to collapse everything and start all over again; it had been a long time since I had seen so much of this resource in a film. While it is true that many times I have said that these twists are necessary to give a certain spark to the story, abusing them can be tiring to the point that it predisposes you to be always alert and not to believe much in what you are seeing because out of nowhere everything can fall again.

Dentro de la trama a estas personas que logran controlar la mente de los demás los llaman "hipnóticos", son una especie de individuos que con solo hablar ya logran obtener la voluntad absoluta de la otra persona. Cuando vi que la película se iba por esas ramas les confieso que mi interés bajó notablemente por el tema de mi cinismo. Esto lógicamente es un problema solo mío y a lo mejor la película es muy top pero sinceramente no me atrapó como me hubiese gustado. Esto no quiere decir que sea una película aburrida porque no lo es, se puede ver sin problemas, de hecho hay partes en donde uno se puede poner un poco tenso gracias a la misma dinámica del film: ir paso a paso buscando descubrir la verdad prácticamente a ciegas.

Within the plot these people who manage to control the minds of others are called "hypnotics", they are a kind of individuals that just by talking they manage to obtain the absolute will of the other person. When I saw that the film was going down these lines, I confess that my interest dropped considerably due to my cynicism. Logically this is only my problem and maybe the movie is very top notch but honestly it didn't grab me as I would have liked it to. This does not mean that it is a boring film because it is not, you can watch it without problems, in fact there are parts where you can get a little tense thanks to the same dynamic of the film: go step by step looking to discover the truth almost blindly.

El guion es un poco flojo, hay escenas donde siento que se les pudo haber sacado más provecho, se ven baratas, los pasajes en donde vemos estas "alteraciones" de la realidad están un poco más aceptables pero aún así también percibo que se quedan un tanto cortas. Algo que volvemos a ver que por lo menos a mi me cansa bastante es que una parte de esta trama se lleva a cabo a México por lo que repentinamente todo se torna sepia, todo lo vemos bajo el filtro eterno y super cliché de que para Hollywood las calles de México y Latinoamérica en general se ven de un tono amarillento. Creo que también puede influir el hecho de que el director es Robert Rodríguez y es que si ven todo su trabajo se darán cuenta que más o menos mantiene la misma tónica siempre.

The script is a little weak, there are scenes where I feel that they could have been taken more advantage of, they look cheap, the passages where we see these "alterations" of reality are a little more acceptable but even so I also perceive that they fall a little short. Something that we see again that at least to me is quite tiring is that part of this plot takes place in Mexico so suddenly everything becomes sepia, we see everything under the eternal and super cliché filter that for Hollywood the streets of Mexico and Latin America in general are seen in a yellowish tone. I think it may also influence the fact that the director is Robert Rodriguez and if you see all his work you will realize that more or less always keeps the same tone.

Ben Affleck acá es un tipo malhumorado, con mucha razón, ya que lo único que quiere es encontrar a su hija. Cosa que tiene mucho sentido porque es complicado ver a Ben sonriendo en un film, los debe de haber pero son pocos. Su actuación es sencilla, no destaca ni da de que hablar, es un personaje más del montón. Lo mismo digo con los otros dos personajes, hacen lo mínimo para darle credibilidad a la trama pero hasta ahí; no existe algo relevante o que sea digno de alabar. Y es que repito, es una película muy promedio, pensé que sería así pero al final el argumento de la historia me bajó del tren.

Ben Affleck here is a grumpy guy, with good reason, since the only thing he wants is to find his daughter. Something that makes sense because it is difficult to see Ben smiling in a film, there must be, but they are few. His performance is simple, he doesn't stand out and doesn't give anything to talk about, he's just another character in the pile. The same goes for the other two characters, they do the minimum to give credibility to the plot but up to there; there is nothing relevant or praiseworthy. And I repeat, it is a very average movie, I thought it would be like that but in the end the plot of the story got me off the train.

A este film le doy un 6/10 porque a pesar de que lo terminé y es uno que se puede ver fue uno que no me convenció mucho. Control mental, alteraciones de la realidad y el gobierno de Estados Unidos son cosas que ya hemos visto en el pasado pero creo que no al nivel de lo que se ve en esta película. Dura hora y media aproximadamente, un punto favor. La recomiendo? - pues si te quieres sorprender un poco y dejar que tu imaginación despegue un rato, si, creo que para pasar el tiempo está bien. I give this film a 6/10 because even though I finished it and it is one that is watchable it was one that didn't convince me much. Mind control, reality alterations and the US government are things we have seen in the past but I think not to the level of what is seen in this film. It lasts about an hour and a half, a plus. Do I recommend it? - Well, if you want to be surprised and let your imagination take off for a while, yes, I think it's fine to pass the time. I leave the trailer below.
