Hola amigos, buenas vibras para todos.
**Hello friends, good vibes to all.
Do you consider yourselves impressionable people, those who see a drop of blood and faint or get dizzy, or those who are sensitive to scenes of high gore and explicit content? - Well friends, if the answer is yes, this is the perfect movie for you to overcome that fear or phobia and sit down with a big bowl of popcorn to enjoy it. There had already been several reviews that I had read around here about the work of the son of the master of the genre David Cronenberg and it seems that Brandon wants to emulate the steps of his father with a pretty decent and impressive film where horror is the main flag.
I can compare this film in terms of style with the last film I saw by Cronenberg Sr., Crime of the Future, starring Viggo Mortensen and Léa Seydoux (if you haven't seen it, go) and the truth is that yes, the influence is very noticeable in many passages of this film. Infinity Pool is a super intelligent film because it is a very clear criticism of the upper social classes, the "untouchable" elites through some pretty dark, weird and peculiar impulses. And all this under a psychedelic atmosphere full of hallucinations and depravity. I can't be more direct but that's how Cronemberg's films are and that's brutal. But well, let's keep talking about this new piece of absurdity that is revolutionizing everything.
This macabre story begins with the marriage of James and Em Foster (Alexander Skarsgård and Cleopatra Coleman) who decide to go on vacation to clear their minds to a resort on an island called La Tolqa. He is a writer and seems to need to find some inspiration, hence the reason for the trip. Inside this resort everything is wonderful and perfect, the thing changes if you decide to leave it. It is important to mention that on this vacation they meet a couple, Gabi and Alban (Mia Goth and Jalil Lespert) with whom they become fast friends but as the saying goes, not all that glitters is gold. Soon they will discover things that will make them live without any doubt an unforgettable experience.
When this plot kicks off? - It does so thanks to a fatal accident, one that will be the door to the discovery of a culture and a form of tourism by the island that is the darkest, most sinister and perverse that can be imagined. This will also push all the protagonists to release all their repressed fears and frustrations so that, thanks to the power of money, they can do whatever they want, it is a kind of disguised impunity. It is difficult to explain with words this film because it is one that is excessively graphic and visual, in fact it is the best it has and what is most enjoyable so it is very possible that everything I say falls short before such an explosion of murky and colorful scenes.
Let's talk about the latter, about what you will see in a little less than two hours of film. I thought that knowing who the director was, it was very easy to get an idea of what everything would be like, but the truth is that it wasn't. There are uncomfortable and complicated scenes to digest. There are uncomfortable and complicated scenes to digest, personally this is not something that affects me but I'm sure many do, there is an excess of blood, both physical and psychological violence, there is a lot of sexual content, full of drugs and alcohol and even a nod to the scatological and everything. It could be described as an x-ray of the most hedonistic and sadistic side of the human being, the search for pleasure and freedom in the most mundane and forbidden things in life. Hence everything is a bit complex to assimilate. The detail is that everything has a reason for being, there is nothing subject to chance or just because, there is an important psychological burden behind it.
And that is the second thing to comment on. As I already said, this film is a strong criticism of those people who work under the power of money, who believe they are untouchable thanks to it. But behind these strange and out of the ordinary behaviors there is a series of insecurities and frustrations that they seek to suppress in this island where it seems that there are no consequences as long as you have enough money. Basically it is having free reign to do and undo without any consequences. In real life there are many people who do not need to go to a little known island to do that and there is the point of it all, that the protagonists lead a normal and routine life but with some depraved desires very hidden in the shell of a normal life. I don't know, this movie showed me how human can become if pushed to extreme situations and the example of that is James. Survival, rediscovery of his true self, call it what you will.
As for the characters, I'm left with two. The first one and the one that for me is the star of this film is Mia Goth, you can see her shooting. Her last film was last year's Pearl, a good slasher that I also recommend. This woman is made for these characters, the level of madness and wildness she can play in a matter of seconds is incredible. Here we can see her playing the madness, the lust but also the role of an understanding, kind and sweet person. The reality is that Gabi is either a very damaged person or she is one who knows where and how to act and has found a way to hide who she really is. 10/10 her performance, I think it's the best you're going to see in the movie. And secondly, good old Alexander. He is another one who got a very dense role, complicated and with an abysmal psychological burden. It is one that as the plot progresses is realizing who he really is, that is very noticeable and indeed those changes are more than noticeable.
If you like this genre without any discussion this film is for you and if you don't I invite you to take a look at it because very sincerely it is a jewel of this type of cinema. Brandon I don't think he has reached his father David yet but he will and this film is the proof. I give it an 8/10. There is violence, gore, perversion, sadism, sexuality, crime, drugs and major emotional abuse. It's a ride for all the senses. From my point of view, not to be missed. It lasts less than two hours and I leave the trailer for you to see a small part of this horror universe.
