Ustedes se consideran unas personas impresionables?, de esas que ven una gota de sangre y se desmayan o marean o de las que son sensibles a escenas de alto contenido gore y explicito? - pues amigos, si la respuesta es afirmativa les digo que esta es la película perfecta para que superen ese miedo o fobia y se sienten con un gran bowl de cotufas a disfrutarla. Ya habían sido varias las reseñas que había leído por acá acerca del trabajo del hijo del maestro del genero David Cronenberg y es que tal parece que Brandon quiere emular los pasos de su padre con un film bastante decente e impresionante en donde el horror es la bandera principal.

There had already been several reviews that I had read around here about the work of the son of the master of the genre David Cronenberg and it seems that Brandon wants to emulate the steps of his father with a pretty decent and impressive film where horror is the main flag.

Puedo comparar esta película en cuanto a estilo con la última que vi de Cronenberg padre, Crime of the Future, protagonizada por Viggo Mortensen y Léa Seydoux (si no la han visto, vayan) y la verdad es que si, la influencia se nota mucho en muchos pasajes de este film. Infinity Pool es una película super inteligente porque es una muy clara critica a las clases sociales altas, a las elites "intocables" a través de unos impulsos bastante oscuros, raros y peculiares. Y todo esto bajo un ambiente psicodélico lleno de alucinaciones y depravación. Más directo no puedo ser pero es que así son las películas de los Cronemberg y eso está brutal. Pero bueno, sigamos hablando un poco acerca de esta nueva pieza de lo absurdo que está revolucionando todo.

I can compare this film in terms of style with the last film I saw by Cronenberg Sr., Crime of the Future, starring Viggo Mortensen and Léa Seydoux (if you haven't seen it, go) and the truth is that yes, the influence is very noticeable in many passages of this film. Infinity Pool is a super intelligent film because it is a very clear criticism of the upper social classes, the "untouchable" elites through some pretty dark, weird and peculiar impulses. And all this under a psychedelic atmosphere full of hallucinations and depravity. I can't be more direct but that's how Cronemberg's films are and that's brutal. Esta macabra historia da inicio con el matrimonio de James y Em Foster (Alexander Skarsgård y Cleopatra Coleman) quienes deciden irse de vacaciones a despejar un poco la mente a un resort en una isla llamada La Tolqa. Él es escritor y parece que necesita buscar un poco de inspiración de ahí también el motivo del viaje. Dentro de este complejo todo es una maravilla y perfecto, la cosa cambia si decides salir de el. Es importante mencionar que en estas vacaciones conocen a una pareja, Gabi y Alban (Mia Goth y Jalil Lespert) de los cuales se hacen rápidamente amigos pero como bien dice el dicho, no todo lo que brilla es oro. Pronto descubrirán cosas que los harán vivir sin ninguna duda una experiencia inolvidable.

This macabre story begins with the marriage of James and Em Foster (Alexander Skarsgård and Cleopatra Coleman) who decide to go on vacation to clear their minds to a resort on an island called La Tolqa. He is a writer and seems to need to find some inspiration, hence the reason for the trip. Inside this resort everything is wonderful and perfect, the thing changes if you decide to leave it. It is important to mention that on this vacation they meet a couple, Gabi and Alban (Mia Goth and Jalil Lespert) with whom they become fast friends but as the saying goes, not all that glitters is gold. Soon they will discover things that will make them live without any doubt an unforgettable experience.

Cuando esta trama arranca? - lo hace gracias a un accidente fatal, uno que será la puerta al descubrimiento de una cultura y una forma de turismo por parte de dicha isla que es de lo más oscuro, siniestro y perverso que se pueda imaginar. Esto también impulsará a que todos los protagonistas liberen todos los miedos y frustraciones que tengan reprimidos para así, gracias al poder del dinero, puedan hacer lo que les venga en gana, es una especie de impunidad disfrazada. Es complicado explicar con palabras este film porque es uno que es en exceso gráfico y visual, de hecho es lo mejor que tiene y lo que más se disfruta por lo que es muy posible que todo lo que diga se quede corto ante semejante explosión de escenas turbias y llenas de colores.

Hablemos de esto último, de eso que verán en un poco menos de dos horas de película. Pensé que al saber quien era su director era muy fácil hacerse una idea de lo que sería todo pero la verdad es que no fue así. Hay escenas incomodas y complicadas de digerir, en lo personal no es algo que me afecte esto pero estoy seguro de que muchos si, hay un exceso de sangre, de violencia tanto física como psicológica, hay mucho contenido sexual, lleno de drogas y alcohol y es que hasta un guiño a lo escatológico y todo. Se los podría describir como una radiografía del lado más hedonista y sádico del ser humano, es la busqueda del placer y de la libertad en las cosas más mundanas y prohibidas de la vida. De allí a que todo sea un poco complejo de asimilar. El detalle es que todo tiene una razón de ser, no hay nada sujeto al azar ni está porque si, hay detrás una carga psicológica importante.

Hence everything is a bit complex to assimilate. The detail is that everything has a reason for being, there is nothing subject to chance or just because, there is an important psychological burden behind it.

Y eso es lo segundo de lo que hay que comentar. Como ya lo dije este film es una fuerte critica a esas personas que obran bajo el poder del dinero, se creen intocables gracias a él. Pero detrás de esos comportamientos extraños y fuera de lo normal hay una serie de inseguridades y frustraciones que buscan suprimir en esta isla en donde tal parece que no hay consecuencias siempre y cuando tengas el dinero suficiente. Basicamente es tener carta libre para hacer y deshacer sin consecuencias algunas. En la vida real hay muchas personas que no necesitan irse a una isla poco conocida para hacer eso y allí está el sentido de todo, que los protagonistas llevan una vida normal y rutinaria pero con unos deseos depravados muy escondidos en la coraza de una vida normal. No se, esta película me demostró como puede llegar a ser el humano si se le empuja a situaciones extremas y el ejemplo de eso es James. Supervivencia, redescubrimiento de su verdadero yo, llámenlo como quieran.

But behind these strange and out of the ordinary behaviors there is a series of insecurities and frustrations that they seek to suppress in this island where it seems that there are no consequences as long as you have enough money. Basically it is having free reign to do and undo without any consequences. In real life there are many people who do not need to go to a little known island to do that and there is the point of it all, that the protagonists lead a normal and routine life but with some depraved desires very hidden in the shell of a normal life. I don't know, this movie showed me how human can become if pushed to extreme situations and the example of that is James. Survival, rediscovery of his true self, call it what you will.

En cuanto a los personajes me quedo con dos. La primera y la que para mi es la estrella de este film es Mia Goth, arriban la ven disparando. Lo último de ella fue Pearl del año pasado, un buen slasher que también se los recomiendo. Esta mujer está hecha para estos personajes, el nivel de locura y desenfreno que puede llegar a interpretar en cosas de segundos es increíble. Acá la podemos ver interpretando la locura, la lujuria pero también el papel de una persona comprensiva, amable y dulce. La realidad es que es Gabi o es una persona sumamente dañada o es una que sabe donde y cómo actuar y que descubrió la manera de esconder quien es ella realmente. 10/10 su actuación, creo que es lo mejor que vas a ver en la película. Y de segundo pues al buen de Alexander. Es otro que le tocó un papel bastante denso, complicado y con una carga psicológica abismal. Es uno que a medida que va avanzando la trama va dándose cuenta quien es el verdaderamente, eso se nota mucho y en efecto esos cambios son más que notorios.

This woman is made for these characters, the level of madness and wildness she can play in a matter of seconds is incredible. Here we can see her playing the madness, the lust but also the role of an understanding, kind and sweet person. The reality is that Gabi is either a very damaged person or she is one who knows where and how to act and has found a way to hide who she really is. 10/10 her performance, I think it's the best you're going to see in the movie. And secondly, good old Alexander. He is another one who got a very dense role, complicated and with an abysmal psychological burden. It is one that as the plot progresses is realizing who he really is, that is very noticeable and indeed those changes are more than noticeable.

Si te gusta este género sin ninguna discusión este film es para ti y si no pues te invito a que le eches un ojo porque muy sinceramente es una joya de este tipo de cine. Brandon creo que aún no le llega a su padre David pero lo hará y esta película es la prueba. Le doy un 8/10. Hay violencia, gore, perversión, sadismo, sexualidad, crímenes, drogas y un maltrato emocional importante. Es un paseo por todos los sentidos. Desde mi punto de vista, imperdible. Dura menos de dos horas y les dejo el tráiler para que vean una pequeña parte de ese universo de horror.

If you like this genre without any discussion this film is for you and if you don't I invite you to take a look at it because very sincerely it is a jewel of this type of cinema. Brandon I don't think he has reached his father David yet but he will and this film is the proof. I give it an 8/10. There is violence, gore, perversion, sadism, sexuality, crime, drugs and major emotional abuse. It's a ride for all the senses. From my point of view, not to be missed.
