El fin de semana pasado ha llegado a su final una de las mejores series que se estrenaron este año y es que el reencuentro de Pennywise con la televisión resultó ser un éxito rotundo. Para que no quedara dudas de la calidad de la serie la misma terminó con sus dos últimos episodios siendo los mejores valorados de los 8 que conforman esta primera temporada, 9.4 y 9.5 respectivamente, según IMDb. Recuerdo que el primer capítulo fue también una muy potente introducción de la que ya se podían esperar cosas y así fue. Estamos ante la mejor serie de terror hecha en cierto tiempo y miren que este género es complicado de lograr pero llegaron los hermanos Muschietti y Jason Fuchs a entregarnos esta verdadera joya.

Last weekend saw the conclusion of one of the best series to premiere this year, and Pennywise's return to television proved to be a resounding success. To leave no doubt about the series' quality, its final two episodes received the highest ratings of the eight that make up this first season, scoring 9.4 and 9.5 respectively, according to IMDb. I recall that the first episode was also a very powerful introduction, one that hinted at what was to come, and it certainly delivered. We are witnessing the best horror series made in a long time, and this genre is notoriously difficult to pull off, but the Muschietti brothers and Jason Fuchs have delivered this true gem.

Nos ubicamos en 1962 para descubrir los inicios u orígenes del famoso payaso en dicha década. Obviamente esto es una precuela ya que ocurre antes de todo lo vivido en las películas. Siempre se ha sabido que Pennywise vive en las alcantarillas de Derry pero su origen no era del todo claro; pues la serie llega para profundizar en ese tema. Resulta que en dicho año comienzan a ocurrir hechos realmente perturbadores, todos relacionados a esta criatura que llegó a la tierra hace miles de años y que desde entonces ha atormentado a todos aquellos que viven en el pequeño pueblo de Derry. Acá veremos cómo un grupo de niños, básicamente porque son a ellos a los que Pennywise ataca, tendrán que hacer frente a esta entidad oscura.

We travel back to 1962 to discover the beginnings or origins of the famous clown in that decade. Obviously, this is a prequel, as it takes place before everything that happens in the films. It has always been known that Pennywise lives in the sewers of Derry, but his origin wasn't entirely clear; this series arrives to delve deeper into that subject. It turns out that in that year, truly disturbing events begin to occur, all related to this creature that arrived on Earth thousands of years ago and has since tormented all those who live in the small town of Derry. Here we will see how a group of children—basically because they are the ones Pennywise attacks—will have to confront this dark entity.

Se sabe que esta criatura se alimenta del miedo, razón por la cual los niños terminan siendo los más vulnerables. Al ser ellos los más afectados son ellos los que inician la investigación para entender que es lo que realmente está pasando. Todo esto dentro de un ambiente en donde el terror sobrenatural está bien presente y en donde la problemática racial de aquellos años también estaba haciendo estragos en la sociedad norteamericana. La trama a mi parecer es espectacular, todo lo que sucede en estos 8 episodios es bien interesante: el origen del payaso, la forma en como lo tienen "encerrado" en el pueblo, hacen mención a los nativos americanos y a la cultura apache como epicentro de protección, la presencia del ejército que no puede faltar y bueno, toda la violencia y horror que genera Pennywise.

This creature is known to feed on fear, which is why children end up being the most vulnerable. Since they are the most affected, they are the ones who begin the investigation to understand what is really happening. All of this takes place within an environment where supernatural terror is ever-present and where the racial tensions of those years were also wreaking havoc on American society. The plot, in my opinion, is spectacular; everything that happens in these eight episodes is very interesting: the origin of the clown, the way they have him "locked up" in the town, the mention of Native Americans and Apache culture as a central source of protection, the inevitable presence of the army, and, of course, all the violence and horror that Pennywise generates.

No hay manera de aburrirse viendo esto porque lo tiene todo. Suspenso, horror, mucho gore y sangre producto de la naturaleza despiadada de "It", el terror sobrenatural es muy bueno, creo que mejora con el pasar de los capítulos pero también nos saca risas y tristezas porque si, pasan cosas que con algunos personajes que son bien emotivas. La serie es muy completa. Pero por si fuera poco también tenemos el componente racial que influye mucho en algunas cosas que terminan afectando la trama. Todo esto se mezcla para dar cabida a una historia que cierra de manera espectacular y que da lugar a futuras cosas que se hagan con la franquicia; por ejemplo ya se sabe que vendrán dos temporada más ambientadas en dos épocas distintas cada una pero mirando al pasado.

There's no way you'll get bored watching this because it has everything. Suspense, horror, plenty of gore and blood—a product of "It's" ruthless nature—the supernatural terror is excellent, and I think it gets better with each episode. It also makes us laugh and cry because, yes, some very emotional things happen with certain characters. The series is very well-rounded. But if that weren't enough, there's also the racial element, which greatly influences certain plot points. All of this blends together to create a story that concludes spectacularly and sets the stage for future projects with the franchise; for example, it's already known that there will be two more seasons, each set in a different era but looking back to the past.

Otra de las cosas que la verdad destacan mucho es todo lo que tiene que ver con lo visual tanto en ambientación como a nivel de efectos o CGI. Las escenas de miedo y de gore no tienen nada que envidiar a las de una película, se disfruta mucho ver lo logrado cinematográficamente hablando. Como hay miedo/terror hay violencia así que a los que son sensibles en este departamento ya les digo que vayan con cuidado porque una decapitación es lo menos que verán. Los personajes y sus actores son otro gran acierto. Los niños interpretaron a la altura, todos y sin excepción, para mi ellos fueron el valor agregado que le dio la personalidad tan cool que tiene la serie. Y bueno, lo de Bill Skarsgård como Pennywise es increíble, el nivel de mimetización con el payaso es total; realmente perturbador y siniestro.

Another thing that really stands out is the visual aspect, both in terms of atmosphere and the effects or CGI. The scary and gory scenes are on par with those in a movie; it's a real treat to see what's been achieved cinematically. Since there's fear/terror, there's violence, so those who are sensitive in this regard should proceed with caution because a decapitation is the least of what you'll see. The characters and their actors are another great success. The children's performances were outstanding, all of them without exception; for me, they were the added value that gave the series its cool personality. And well, Bill Skarsgård's portrayal of Pennywise is incredible; his level of immersion in the clown is total; truly disturbing and sinister.

Una serie que es un 9/10 para mi, quizás de lo mejor del año junto con Pluribus que ya hablaremos de ella. Super recomendada porque lo tiene todo. Les dejo el tráiler por si alguno no lo ha visto aún.

This series is a 9/10 for me, perhaps one of the best of the year along with Pluribus, which we'll talk about later. Highly recommended because it has everything. I'll leave the trailer here in case anyone hasn't seen it yet.
